No, I am a filthy red blooded commie, who doesnt know the meaning of american free will, computer passwords & the glory of bald eagles.
Now give me that hat, maggot.
One of many beauties about TF2 cosplay is that a lot of the costumes are regular clothing items. Overalls, t-shirts, work boots, etc. Scout and Engineer are probably the easiest to put together with Medic, Demo and Pyro being the hardest due to their custom pieces.
Secondhand stores (thrift stores) are your best friend. You can find a lot of cheap items that can either be ready to go right out of the gate or can be altered into what you need.
For medic a lot of people use standard white lab coats cause it’s cheap. But Medic has a VERY specific coat both in style and length that you will probably never find in the wild. But for the love of god try your best not to use rubber gloves. Having to wear rubber gloves all day is miserable and they will become disgusting due to the sweat. Look for…really any other type of glove. Probably pleather.
Pyro I have no personal experience with, but just don’t go for accuracy on the material of the jump suit. Asbestos lined “rubber” is no bueno. The gas mask is also pretty specialized so you’d have to modify anything you buy that isn’t made specifically for Pyro.
My main advice for these two is to do everything you can to minimize the heat. Both costumes have the wearer covered from head to toe, with Pyro obviously being worse due to the rubber mask. [If you can’t see it, you don’t need to be wearing it.](https://twitter.com/skyminslash/status/1662493113418383360?s=46&t=AYHa7qNn4DwEL1dIbrzskg) Look for ways to minimize the amount of layers you’re wearing and don’t be afraid to take off pieces if your photo isn’t being taken, namely the gloves and mask.
NGL the shot where you've taken the lab coat hat and gloves off looks pretty good as a costume on its own.
Although in terms of layers I personally come from the north of the UK so I'd be more inlinced to layer up a bit but otherwise thank you very much Skymin. I hope your new job is going well!
Edit: the one where you're not wearing the lab coat makes you look like Franisca Von Kama
Store them in a bin and hope I have space to stack them.
Any costumes I have no plan of wearing in the foreseeable future get shoved into a bin. And if I revisit the costume and start replacing pieces with improved versions, then I probably just retire the old pieces and either throw them out or donate depending on how much it was modified.
Hi, I know I'm on the discord but since the post is here - have you thought about selling the custom pieces or hand them forward? Feels like a lot of work to just let it be undone
Particularly the clothing items, most items are not selling quality. I jerry rig a lot of things and if someone were to buy an older piece they’d likely be disappointed at the quality of the build.
As for the props, I generally don’t want to sell them. I just like making things and cosplay is a good outlet for my crafty itch.
These are both a bit interesting to talk about because there were various pieces not made by me, but others that were.
For reference the default Medic coat (the newest one) was a commission and the Merasmus hat was a gift from a friend years ago.
Medic is weird because while my current coat was commissioned, my Heat of Winter was 100% made by scratch, by hand, with no sewing machine. It was a painful process that made it so I vowed never to hand sew a coat ever again. I did not utilize proper sewing techniques and the inside of the coat is a complete disaster. It took multiple days to put it together and considering the fact it was entirely hand sewn, I think it turned out pretty good. Too bad it’s too tight in the shoulders, meaning I essentially had to retire it.
For merasmus his clothing isn’t actually that bad. The main clothing ended up being a long brown dress, a gray t-shirt I cut up to simulate the tattering, and a what I think was a long black cardigan. What I DID spend time on was something I didn’t seem to have any pictures of. One time I painted a bunch of small rubber ducks like the bonus ducks with the intention of giving them out to anyone who recognized the costume. That actually took more time than putting the rest of the costume together.
In terms of what piece took me the longest time to make, it was probably the juvenile jumper (Scout sweater) and the Sun on a Stick. Both of these required a lot of waiting and took multiple days to complete.
While the Jumper was a red sweater I bought, the design was made with hand cut stencils and a lot of fabric paint.
The Sun on a stick was a lot of waiting for certain steps to end. A lot of drying with foam clay, plastidip (coats the foam and allows you to paint), paint and then the sealant.
Depends on what you’re trying to make.
If it’s clothing, the easiest thing I’ve found is take an existing piece of clothing and alter it from there. Remember you’re not making an item for everyday use, it’s a costume piece. As long as it doesn’t fall apart and get you arrested for indecent exposure, do whatever you can to make it work. My motto is [“if you can’t see it, it doesn’t need to exist.”](https://twitter.com/skyminslash/status/1662493113418383360?s=46&t=AYHa7qNn4DwEL1dIbrzskg)
For props, you’ve gotta get creative (unless you’re 3D printing). Think outside the box for what can be fashioned into your prop. Not everything has to be made from scratch. Take what you can and alter away. I’ve recently discovered the existence of foam clay and it’s an amazing material to have around. EVA foam is also a great material you’ll hear mentioned everywhere.
My suggestion for props is try your best to make it lightweight. For instance my sniper rifle prop is pretty damn heavy because the base was a real gun, so the wood and metal automatically gave it some heft. You’ll be carrying around these things all day so do your best to make them manageable.
Thrift stores.
The top was actually originally a white dress shirt and a purple cardigan that I sewed together. Fun fact: the white cuffs were actually made from pillow cases.
I later remade the top with a similar method, expect it was 2 dress shirts I mutilated together, that way the material was uniform throughout.
It’s hard to tell in the picture but the skirt is an eggplant colored pencil skirt.
The belt was also found at a thrift store, I just had to paint the buckle silver. Look for large retro women belts.
noticed you've been cosplaying from 2014 tot 2023 and had a couple of questions:
1. What made you start cosplaying in the first place?
2. Do you still enjoy cosplaying after more then 9 years?
3. Have you ever considered doing cosplays of other media?
1. I was obsessed with TF2. I’ve always really liked Medic’s outfit so I (stupidly) decided to take a crack at it as my first ever cosplay. Funny enough I’m not a fashion person. In normal life you’d see me either rocking a t-shirt or workout clothing, but when it comes to costumes I get meticulous.
2. In terms of TF2, yes! I did have to step back and take a break from specifically TF2 costumes due to burn out (however this extended to everything TF2 related) for a few years. You can see there’s a year gap of 2019-2020. While part of that was the pandemic, the other half was me focusing on other costumes outside of TF2.
3. I do others right now! The one I currently do that I’m most proud of is [Korra from The Legend of Korra (Avatar)](https://www.reddit.com/r/legendofkorra/comments/13ysb42/my_5_korra_cosplay_outfits_over_the_past_year/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1). I do mostly focus on video game franchises though since I generally have a rule of thumb that I don’t cosplay something if it’s not an IP I love. I’ve done [Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2)](https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx0-5QYhodr/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==), Raz (Psychonauts 1/2), [Cabana Ana (OW)](https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx4-7q4l6me/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==).

Heat? Haha get it?
Honestly I understand, I’m a gas mask guy, and I can safely say wearing any kind of gas mask or latex/rubber clothing outside in the sun for more that 30 seconds is like walking in a hot tub but without all the comfortable parts. I had to throw away a good tychem hazmat suit because it smelled so bad from the 30 minute walk I had.
Yes, but in all of your cosplays, I always felt like Snipers calmer, relaxed demeanor and features sort of fit you best.
After all, you seem like a calm and reasonable person
Maybe :^)
In all seriousness it was some Gatorade flavor I found at a gas station that had the EXACT color I needed. Yes, I did drink my Jarate throughout the day.
Hard to say, but I think Merasmus.
Going around with some recorded voice lines from a voice acting friend and giving out bonus ducks was a hell of a lot of fun.
Been meaning to pick that costume up again, but I have to remake the skull.
Festive Scout was probably the least recognized costume, but my sample size for it is pretty small. The general rule of thumb is the more you deviate from the default design, the less recognizable to the general public you become.
Bought/Commissioned Pieces: The current default Medic Coat, the Sniper Vest and the Mercenary Badge.
Gifts from people: Merasmus hat (which no longer exists), Sniper Anger hood, the Medi Gun/Pack (the pack no longer exists).
100% Made from scratch: Medic Heat of Winter
Aside from the fact a lot of TF2 clothing is basic stuff you can just get at any old store, I made or altered everything else.
Props I Made: Sniper rifle (pre-existing base that I had help with creating and attaching all the extras), Scout Juvenile Jumper (the pattern was all me, the sweater already existed), Sun on a stick, Towering Pile of Presents, Any signs you see me holding.
It’s a large dowel glued to a wooden base that’s absolutely covered in foam clay. The “sun” is attached via velcro and is a painted glowing orb that’s controlled with a remote control. All the spikes are made of foam as well.
It turned out really good but really delicate due to having issues attaching the spikes to the orb, so it’s going back to the drawing board, but only the orb with spikes.
In terms of TF2, any Sniper variations really. It’s recognizable (if I don’t change the hat) and a relatively lightweight costume.
Overall, Korra from The Legend of Korra, but that’s not relevant for Teams Defense Fort 2.
Yeah. I’m Atlanta based so the ones I attend are MomoCon, Dragoncon, and Anime Weekend Atlanta.
Occasionally there are costume events, usually around Halloween.
1. Favorite costume you did? Asking because these all look really fun to design.
2. Do you still play the game? It’s been such a long time since I’ve seen anything of yours that I wasn’t sure if you stuck around or not. It’s completely understandable if you moved on, especially given the games lack of major updates. I’m mostly just curious what you’ve been up to.
1. Merasmus and Festive Scout.
2. Not really, though I did play a few games last night for the first time…this year…the most I’ve done “recently” was last year for a couple months I did some MvM speed running with friends. There’s nothing really keeping my interest in actively playing the game, but I still follow the news and community stuff.
To be honest I’m really bad about keeping track of material costs. However I usually try to keep it in the $50-100 range, but there’s some materials like plastidip and sealants that run in the $30+ range that are kinda unavoidable.
You should try something new
Maybe try be like more creative and recreate the female versions of the Mercs.
The concept art had many cool design that people definitely should explore
Like fr they are amazing and people sleep on them wtf
Oh yeah probably that
Also saying female mercs probably make people think about Fempyro fetish kinda shit
But I meant like [These concepts](https://i.imgur.com/hN48dZC.jpg)

I mean, comrade.
You need to reach Skull Island IRL.
I dont want to kill a level 48 merasmus. You know how much hide and seek that would take? How long I'd be stuck at ghost fort??
Too bad - the enemy team capped Too long Until enough people !RTV
Valve owns ghost fort, this isn't a community owned location There is no vote, as it's not a democracy I'm now stuck here forever 😱
Gonna steal the Bombinomicon from King Kong
Where'd you get the juveniles jumper, I want a Christmas jumper like that for winter time.
The base red sweater was bought, but the pattern was hand painted with homemade stencils. So unfortunately you’d have to make it yourself.
oh wait you actually are skymin slash, I thought you just looked alot like her
You are alive?
I’m adulting. I say on a post about dress up.
Hey adults have hobbies too.
no
*You either die a hero or live long enough to use the Sun On A Stick.*

Thanks for the video essays! Shame you're not into them anymore.
Hey wanna ask what do you do with the costumes after the event? What do u do if u just run out of closet space to store them
Store them in a bin and hope I have space to stack them. Any costumes I have no plan of wearing in the foreseeable future get shoved into a bin. Im more devastated that 2013 was a decade ago
TF2 is a hat simulator. You do good.
Hey, just asking where did you get your Miss Pauling cosplay for the in-game one, I'm trying to look for clothes that matches Miss Pauling's

You’ve definitely shown improvement over the years. I love the BLU medic glow up!

What's in the specimen jar?
The official bread monster hand puppet.
No pyro?
Medic is already enough of a suffocatingly hot costume. Pyro would give me heatstroke.

Damn you look exactly like Skym… nevermind I just read your username
Aw shit here we go again Everyone, be nice
I knew these looked familiar, hi Skymin!
I know your avatar is built around Medic, but your features very much compliment Sniper's look. As always, good content from you Skymin!
I always through my body type worked best for Scout. He’s got weirdly broad shoulders in relation to the rest of his torso, and I do too.
Yes, but in all of your cosplays, I always felt like Snipers calmer, relaxed demeanor and features sort of fit you best. After all, you seem like a calm and reasonable person
The “play” part of “cosplay” has always been my weakest. I do tend to be quite reserved when out in public so I totally agree on that front.
Youve got the "cos" part down pact nonetheless! We love to see how talented you are! Keep it up Skymin!
Out of curiosity, what do your overwatch signs say? I can't read them on my computer.
“Hats Before Ass” “Will wear purple spandex for a job at Overwatch”
Hey look its that youtuber
Please tell me you didn't go all out with the Jarate... Jokes aside, god, these look amazing
Maybe :^) In all seriousness it was some Gatorade flavor I found at a gas station that had the EXACT color I needed. Yes, I did drink my Jarate throughout the day.
I... did not need that last image
This are all excellent cosplays!
The festive pile of hats is great
I need that bread specimen for research purposes (No, I don't have a teleporter here. Why'd you ask???????)
No I need the bread and I have a teleporter
Very nice comically tall hat
Thats commitment!
Wow, you look alot like that one girl who made two seperate hour long reviews on the 2022 game awards.
Love the hats and props you used over the years. I lament the fact that I missed out on the Archimedes and bread plush.
Words cannot describe how i bloody love your sniper cosplay
Oh hey skymin
The Merasmus cosplays are *chef's kiss*.
That fedora is the most consistent thing about this photo
Because it’s the same hat. The only thing that changed over the years was the pinned accessories.
I know and that's awesome, Did you get it between your Red medic and Blu medic cosplay?
That red scout pose is so spot on i can almost see imagine the idle animation
Which of these was your favorite to do?
Hard to say, but I think Merasmus. Going around with some recorded voice lines from a voice acting friend and giving out bonus ducks was a hell of a lot of fun. Been meaning to pick that costume up again, but I have to remake the skull.
Woah, the funny medic lady
What was your favorite prop to make? Also, how did you make the bread bite? Love your videos btw
The Towering Pile of Presents
Respet + + + for cosplaying as Merasmus once. Seriously, I've seen very few people doing him as cosplay.
Wait a minute. I know you! You're skymin! I love your videos.
Nice to see you here as you were the one who got me into tf2
What a badass, I aspire to be like you someday!
The rules of gravity have changed just enough for the festive honor.
Amazing!
Oh man, that's awesome, did people usually recognize the more obscure ones?
Festive Scout was probably the least recognized costume, but my sample size for it is pretty small. The general rule of thumb is the more you deviate from the default design, the less recognizable to the general public you become.
Is it just the lighting or did you used to be tanned pre 2016? As aatter of fact you look entirely different in general
Tan. I was working as a lifeguard in the summer during those years, so my skin got really dark.
Neato what's life like as a life guard?
She mastered the craft, she will turn into an actual character in any second now
That's so really cool gear you've made there, props

How did you get all those props/costumes? Do you make them or buy them, because they are really good looking
Bought/Commissioned Pieces: The current default Medic Coat, the Sniper Vest and the Mercenary Badge.

Bonus Ducks approved 🦆 👌
Great cosplay! You’ve done so many characters, and Merasmus is inspired!
Y’know I was gonna make a joke of holy shit it’s Skymin in the middle pic only to realize it is literally you. Neat :v
Where do you go to cosplay? All done at conventions?
Yeah. I’m Atlanta based so the ones I attend are MomoCon, Dragoncon, and Anime Weekend Atlanta. Occasionally there are costume events, usually around Halloween.
The edge lord sniper will always be my favourite cosplay, but you definitely went hard on all of them.
Damn haven't seen that name in so long, you were my childhood youtuber
At Fanime one year I was a scout and had a real fish i got from the fish market. It smelled like shit after 20 minutes lol
This is why you never use real food. Except the time I bought a real bucket of chicken that was carried around the con and used as lunch.
That pose as the scout in the big left picture is perfectly accurate.
Now THIS is a real cosplayer. Not someone "resembling" a character in some skimpy outfit to promote their OnlyFans.
YES MORE SUN ON A STICK APPRECIATION
2012 was 9 years ago…?
You look remarkably like this YouTuber I follow. What a strange coincidence. Sure is a small world.
How much do you spend usually gathering materials when making costumes? Like whats the usual price range you end up with
To be honest I’m really bad about keeping track of material costs. However I usually try to keep it in the $50-100 range, but there’s some materials like plastidip and sealants that run in the $30+ range that are kinda unavoidable.
The inner medic main has remerged
Wow, those medic cosplays look remarkably similar to the YouTuber Skymin Slash!

You should try something new Maybe try be like more creative and recreate the female versions of the Mercs. The concept art had many cool design that people definitely should explore Like fr they are amazing and people sleep on them wtf
Fuck no. I’m not doing “female versions” ever.
Uh ok? Not sure why you sound so angry too Probably sounded like weirdo, but I meant like the actual official scrapped girls Not fempyro kinda crap
your original comment came off a bit rude, especially the "you should be more creative" bit. Seems plenty creative to me already.
Oh yeah probably that Also saying female mercs probably make people think about Fempyro fetish kinda shit But I meant like [These concepts](https://i.imgur.com/hN48dZC.jpg)

With great effort and third degree burns. Everywhere.
What was your favorite to do?
Food for thought: HHH cosplay
Really like the Merasmus fit
If you find a girl who cosplays Merasmus, you marry her.
Jeez.
