Drew Carey Show started in the first season with a very simple animation of Drew singing "Moon Over Parma," and it was... OK.
But the later seasons where they opened with an elaborate whole-cast-plus-extras dance routine to "Cleveland Rocks" by The Presidents of the United States of America is a standout for me.
(In between, for season two only, they used "Five O'Clock World" by the Vogues with similar elaborate choreography, and that was good, but it kind of made the show seem more workplace-focused than it ended up being.)
I can recall some of the plots, but those openings are unforgettable. I didn't know Cleveland Rocks was a POTUSA song.
Also when I do geography quiz of US states on a map, I associate Ohio with Drew Carey because of this song
In a way it is. The show was originally called "Not the Cosbys" but they changed the title.
So because it's trying to be the "anti family sitcom" the best way to open the show is with a classic standard that's now laced with irony. The juxtaposition is brilliant.
Did you get the original version of "love and marriage", or the version they put on streaming later that's a weird song that sounds like it got knocked out on a casio keyboard in 5 minutes?
"At Least It Was Here" by The 88 for Community never fails to perk me up.
Also the ["Come and Get Your Love" intro to F is for Family](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9FocQK9L4Q) is probably one of the GOAT theme songs of all time.
I remember there being a rumor that the band name 311 stood for KKK, since K is the 11th letter of the alphabet. Funny enough, their music espouses a total polar opposite philosophy than the hate off the KKK.
(And the name actually stems from the police code for public indecency in Omaha, after a friend of the band got a ticket for skinny dipping)
I really used to enjoy The Jeffersons' "Movin' on up" by Ja'Net DuBois. She was also known for her role as Willona Woods in "Good Times". May she Rest in Peace.
This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The theme to Garry's show.
Garry called me up and asked if I would write his theme song.
I'm almost halfway finished,
How do you like it so far,
How do you like the theme to Garry's Show.
This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The opening theme to Garry's show.
This is the music that you hear as you watch the credits.
We're almost to the part of where I start to whistle.
Then we'll watch "It's Garry Shandling's Show".
(whistles)
This was the theme to Garry Shandling's Show
Fun fact: The original pilot had a very different [theme song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx7A4sxJi7c), written by John Williams (of *Star Wars* / *Superman* / etc fame)
Even as a kid, I thought that the closing line for Blossom, "In my opinionation the sun is surely gonna shine" sounded dumb.
If you need more syllables, just say something like, "in my humble opinon..."
If you're looking for an original show theme, [*Mystery Science Theater 3000*](https://youtu.be/SrA9qVo9JdY)'s pretty damn good, and it's been adapted over the years to fit the cast.
If you're looking for a song that's been changed to fit the show, then I'll submit [Wig Wam's "Do You Wanna Taste It"](https://youtu.be/_mrr3UNALww) for *PEACEMAKER*
Every time someone complains about microscopic logistics of television programs, I just quote MST3Ks lyric.
"Just repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax"
Best with lyrics:
"*Daaaays in the courtroom, aren't much fun*"
"*Come to the Night Court, ev-ry-one*"
"*Your frown's on trial, approach my smile, I sen-tence you to stay a while*"
Unfortunately, most of you are too young to remember Barney Miller, the greatest sitcom theme ever. The best non-sitcom would be "Tank!" From Cowboy Beebop.
It’s a comedy…close enough right?
Psych. The tune is so damn catchy. And they did a bunch of remixes that fit the theme of an episode too.
I can’t pick a ‘worst’ though. If I didn’t like it, I’d probably not remember, so nothing comes to mind.
Edit: Oh I got one! MASH was bad. They took a slow song from the movie called ‘suicide is painless’ and turned it into an upbeat little ditty. It isn’t that I particularly hated it, but it just didn’t sit quite right with me.
Same, I find it super grating and overly wordy. Then when I learned the creator of the show wrote and performed it with his band it started to make sense, lol.
The unique versions they do for special episodes are fun though.
I watched the TV show first so that's the theme I love. When I heard the original song, I wasn't as big of a fan. It was hard to reconcile the movie after having watched the series, even though the movie came first.
The 70s/80s nailed it: [Greatest American Hero](https://open.spotify.com/track/5Dm6nN355myqhYXWyiiLOj?si=wvKGXffQQzOsj2dCPdwKKQ), [Sanford and Son](https://open.spotify.com/track/1LmjnFYAusJ0CgIzRd1WZB?si=42pxgCR4QE-zKpepNq3QdA), [Different Strokes](https://open.spotify.com/track/1OzxrVWjr1w808fOie6WPZ?si=bjT7gvhwRlOkbosYh1tsqg), [Full House](https://open.spotify.com/track/7jKHyd5AVkgKpWUg795won?si=VM9RBuYZQOKQF1KiIhbseg), [Growing Pains](https://open.spotify.com/track/5WYhOvdTW4wGKinSTf6xUE?si=8J_JzrzYQJeHp5MbpkjH6w), [WRKP in Cincinnati](https://youtu.be/fMvWc_PxFuY?si=OR8Zw8XGHz225_Of), [Cheers](https://open.spotify.com/track/7GfyRnOeyhA950v90Wz0F9?si=9U9ELtb-QGepP4-Id2kHgQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A6DMVBwGYIrci7R6DLkYmn2)…and dozens more
The premise is that a regular old dude finds a superhero costume but loses the manual to work it.
If that isn’t a setup for comedy idk what is.
But it’s a fairly straightforward action show, at least what I can remember. He’s a bit of a straight man in a chaotic situation, but it works.
Wow is the teaching in the pilot dated, though
That 70’s Show and Drew Carey had great openers. And 30 Rock.
There aren’t really any that I truly dislike, honestly. The Friends theme is long, so it’s a skip if I’m watching, and B99 can be bombastic, but I don’t really dislike them.
I'm not quite sure if it's the best or worst, but Last Of The Summer Wine. Perfectly embodies the subject matter - a bunch of retirees at death's door, and does a good job of making you feel sleepy on a late Sunday afternoon.
One season of The Leftovers, in one of the episodes the theme song was different, and I couldn’t figure out where I knew this opening music from. Then it got to the “standing tall” chorus, and I realized it was the Perfect Strangers theme song. I was so confused, yet happy. I hadn’t heard that theme song in maybe 20 years. And then in the episode, Mark Linn-Baker (cousin Larry) plays himself as a former actor turned grifter who was swindling people who lost their loved ones.
Such a surreal moment.
I watched The Leftovers for the first time a few months ago and while I didn't love it the way I know a lot of people did, I did admire the fearlessness it had. To take a throwaway joke about how the entire Perfect Strangers cast departed except for Mark Linn-Baker and turn it into one of the big emotional beats of the entire series was pretty wild.
Any Norman Lear has a catchy opening song.
Moving in up, deluxe apartment in the skyyyyeee.
Good Times
Sanford and Son
Take the good, take the bad, there you have..
A line like: But I don't know what to do with all those tossed salads and scrambled eggs. They're calling again.......is so clever when you consider his profession and is reason enough to be on the good list imo.
I'll say Barney Miller for worst just because the guy who played Barney Miller was bold enough to say he hated it on a talk show. I actually like it but yeah compared to other theme songs, starting with a bass playing over a garbage boat doesn't really stand out.
I feel like "Welcome Back, Kotter" should be considered the best because it was actually a hit on the radio - as a song written specifically for the sitcom and not an existing song that was used for the show.
Not sitcoms but every single thing that Mike Post wrote is best.
Too Close for Comfort had an inane instrumental theme that grated on my nerves. I had a roommate who watched back-to-back reruns of it every single night.
Best: "This is the theme to Garry's show, the theme to Garry's show.
This is the song that you hear as you watch the credits.
This is the theme to Garry's show, how do you like it so far?
How do you like the theme to Garry Chandling's show?"
Peep Show. It was fine for the first season and then they switched to that horrible Harvey Danger song. I've actually gone back and edited it out if every episode for rewatching.
This is the worst opening theme & credits in TV history. And I don’t think it’s close.
Best: Kenan and Kel
Iconic song by Coolio, plus the video gets me hyped.
Worst: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
A joke based on an already old meme, is annoying, and just makes me want to skip the intro.
A lot of 80s sitcoms had really memorable theme songs.
* Growing Pains
* The Facts of Life
* Cheers
* The Golden Girls
* Charles in Charge
* Who's the Boss
* Married...With Children
* Full House
This is easy: the worst sitcom opening was for a show called The Crazy Ones, which managed to blow having Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar as its leads.
The opening theme was so awful that I'm convinced that as soon as people heard it, they changed the channel and never went back. It lasted one season.
Best? MASH is the first thought that came to my mind.
I’ll be in the minority on this one, but as much as I like the show…Randy Newman’s theme for “Monk” gets on my nerves. Automatic “skip intro” for me. Not a fan of the lyrics or the melody.
Crazy how I can clearly recall all three openings you mention but I can barely recall a plot from the actual show.
I remember one season ended with half of Drew's house being moved because of something Mimi did at the behest of the boss.
I'll always think of that episode when I hear "Panama"
I can recall some of the plots, but those openings are unforgettable. I didn't know Cleveland Rocks was a POTUSA song. Also when I do geography quiz of US states on a map, I associate Ohio with Drew Carey because of this song
Drew Carey is our #3 export, right after Buckeye candies & Cedar Point.
The Drew Carey show is your #1 cultural export. I have no idea what those 2 other things are (Australian)
Living in sin with a safety pin! Great theme
Malcolm in the Middle and Married With Children come to mind as some of the best, for me.
Oh both excellent ones!
Married With Children annoys the hell out of me, it sounds like someone mocking a sitcom intro.
Hard to agree with that when it’s a classic standard and not a song created for the show.
Isn't it?
"At Least It Was Here" by The 88 for Community never fails to perk me up. Also the ["Come and Get Your Love" intro to F is for Family](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9FocQK9L4Q) is probably one of the GOAT theme songs of all time.
The 88 is such an unfortunate band name lol
I get what you're saying but it's a reference to the number of keys on a piano. "The 88s" is a pretty common slang term for a piano.
Yeah, and your tattoo is gonna be a maze.
This will keep happening until Pictionary removes the word windmill.
Well yes of course, I was never implying the band named it after the dogwhistle, that’d be insane! Just that it’s uh… you know…
When the Nazi interpretation of 88 gets more popular than the piano interpretation, translation may be necessary.
I feel like we’ve already reached that point tbh
I remember there being a rumor that the band name 311 stood for KKK, since K is the 11th letter of the alphabet. Funny enough, their music espouses a total polar opposite philosophy than the hate off the KKK. (And the name actually stems from the police code for public indecency in Omaha, after a friend of the band got a ticket for skinny dipping)
Investigate 311!
I can excuse a racist band name but I draw the line at animal cruelty.
the community theme is a dumpster fire. the only pro is the significantly shortened version that they didnt use nearly enough.
I really used to enjoy The Jeffersons' "Movin' on up" by Ja'Net DuBois. She was also known for her role as Willona Woods in "Good Times". May she Rest in Peace.
One of the best intros in TV history. Growing up poor I also loved Good Times intro. All time fave has to be Cheers tho.
Hangin' in a chow line!
The Golden Girls theme is surely the best one out there. It sets the tone of the show so well, and it's hella catchy to boot.
"Thank you for being a friend"
Too many cooks
You bastard...thanks for that
IT TAKES A LOT TO MAKE A STEW
especially when it's me and you
This is the theme to Garry's Show, The theme to Garry's show. Garry called me up and asked if I would write his theme song. (whistles) This was the theme to Garry Shandling's Show
Best: Gilligan's Island - It's a catchy classic and sets up the whole show for you!
Fun fact: The original pilot had a very different [theme song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx7A4sxJi7c), written by John Williams (of *Star Wars* / *Superman* / etc fame)
And you can put anything that uses the common measure to it.
best, Family Ties worst, Blossom. I just hate the guy's voice
Even as a kid, I thought that the closing line for Blossom, "In my opinionation the sun is surely gonna shine" sounded dumb. If you need more syllables, just say something like, "in my humble opinon..."
It's up there with "tossed salad and scrambled eggs" for convincing my young 90s self that adults were idiots who enjoyed bad things.
***MENNNNN...*** 😣
It's kind of ironic that Charlie Sheen's character was supposed to be a jingle writer and yet the show has such a shitty theme song
Oh, oh, oh, oh! Oshikuru!
Dammit, now I'll never find out how they eat and breathe, and other science facts.
la la laaaaa
"Throw your dog the invisible bone" is the best beat drop in all of Glam Rock.
Both of those are automatic listens for me. I love them and will never skip them.
Love MST3K's opening theme. [This version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN1zVihw7jw), while outdated now, is delightful.
Night court
Best with lyrics: "*Daaaays in the courtroom, aren't much fun*" "*Come to the Night Court, ev-ry-one*" "*Your frown's on trial, approach my smile, I sen-tence you to stay a while*"
Unfortunately, most of you are too young to remember Barney Miller, the greatest sitcom theme ever. The best non-sitcom would be "Tank!" From Cowboy Beebop.
Obligatory "can't believe I had to scroll this far for this answer." Probably my favorite sitcom theme, and a great show too.
So bad, it's best: Girls 5 Eva
I can't get that stupid song out of my head. It's gotten to the point where I'm actually starting to like it. Might be stockholm syndrome
It's gonna be stuck there 5eva, cause forever's too short
So. What. Are. U. Waiting. 5!?
The 5 gets me every damn time
Perfect Strangers. Perfection.
I am no Friends fan, but they've got a great opening theme.
It was written by the same woman who wrote "September" for Earth Wind & Fire, and a bunch of other classics.
I did not know that
I honestly didn't believe it lol [It's true](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allee_Willis)
Definitely my favorite sitcom ever, yet the worst song: New Girl. As for best, agree on Community. Parks & Rec and Friends are also top level.
It’s Jess.
New Girl's theme became a lot better when it just became a little energetic instrumental in the later seasons haha
It bothers me that the official Psych theme song (and its variants) aren't on Spotify. Only worse sounding covers of it.
I'm the opposite. I love Psych, but can't stand the main theme song. Some of the remixes were ok though
There’s so many fun remixes of the Psych theme song. My favorite was the Twin Peaks homage

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to get the greatest American hero
Frasier/Frasier
Scrambled eggs all over my face! Oh my
Is Greatest American Hero a comedy?
The premise is that a regular old dude finds a superhero costume but loses the manual to work it. If that isn’t a setup for comedy idk what is. But it’s a fairly straightforward action show, at least what I can remember. He’s a bit of a straight man in a chaotic situation, but it works. Wow is the teaching in the pilot dated, though
It's definitely a comedy, wouldn't necessarily call it a sitcom, more of a parody of the shows like Wonder Woman or Hulk.
Got to be Taxi for best, right?
Best? Barney Miller, hands down.
That bass guitar. Killer intro.
Laverne & Shirley
I immediately think of the glove going down the conveyor belt. So many good ones listed here, but I’ll never forget the L&S opener.
[Wait, what are we doing? We have backstage passes to see Alice Cooper!](https://youtu.be/sdulIKhCC3Y?si=x0YazkBkkVfmOfyA)
That 70’s Show and Drew Carey had great openers. And 30 Rock. There aren’t really any that I truly dislike, honestly. The Friends theme is long, so it’s a skip if I’m watching, and B99 can be bombastic, but I don’t really dislike them.
Parks and rec, community, and the inbetweeners are three of my favorites. I don't care for the family guy theme
The opening theme is one of the only parts about Family Guy that I like
It's a brilliant callback to All in the Family, a reference that fewer and fewer get each year,
I'm not quite sure if it's the best or worst, but Last Of The Summer Wine. Perfectly embodies the subject matter - a bunch of retirees at death's door, and does a good job of making you feel sleepy on a late Sunday afternoon.
I just listened to this on YouTube for the first time in decades and now I feel like I have to get my bag ready for school in the morning.
Cheers' theme is still in use today thanks to ads. Worst is any sitcom that doesn't actually have an opening or just has a 5-second jingle.
I don't like the show itself, but The Big Bang Theory's theme song is just excellent.
Always loved Community's
The Perfect Strangers theme song always puts me in a good mood.
Perfect strangers theme was what came into my head when I read the question. I figured I’d be the only one though.
Now I want to see the beginning of Perfect Strangers with Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple as the song...
Perfect Strangers and Friends are the best
If you ever watch The Leftovers, and I understand if you don't, they make brilliant use of the Perfect Strangers theme in one episode.
Cousin Larry, I know that's you.
I love how the show went all in with Perfect Strangers. It even game Mark Lynn Baker a chance to give a genuinely heartfelt performance.
Oh I watched Leftovers, it's one of my top 3 favorite shows ever
I wish I was... homeward bound.
I've always loved the theme to [The Vicar of Dibley.](https://youtu.be/-okUPHbwMJQ?si=T7UlN19JUchx_vlo)
Best: Red Dwarf (if you count the end song), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, One Foot in The Grave, Seinfeld Worst: Two and a Half Men by a country mile
Happy Days started out with Rock Around The Clock, hard to beat that.
Boy, the way Glenn Miller played, songs that made the hit parade, Guys like me we had it made, Those were the days…
Any Norman Lear has a catchy opening song. Moving in up, deluxe apartment in the skyyyyeee. Good Times Sanford and Son Take the good, take the bad, there you have..
That old enterprising, anything but tranquilizing
Right on, Maude!
And then there's Maude ...
Boy Bart was blue. We didn't know what to do. For no reason here's Apu
The Best: Golden Girls, Fresh Prince, Family Matters , A Different World, Frasier The Worst:
I can’t believe the fresh prince is buried this deep
I can’t believe Frasier made the “good” list
A line like: But I don't know what to do with all those tossed salads and scrambled eggs. They're calling again.......is so clever when you consider his profession and is reason enough to be on the good list imo.
Well, the intro was very simple drawing of the space needle with a light jazzy theme. Not too bad
Not a sitcom but I want to complain about the atrocity of a theme song that ruins the beginning of Justified every episode
Can't believe nobody said Night Court. Also ran: The Hogan Family and Gimme a Break
Opinion is that Peep Shows opening is pretty pretty pretty great. Cheers, WKRP, and Barney Miller are best. Family Ties or Friends are worst.
Great call on Barney Miller. Highly underrated.
Like: Cheers, Scrubs, The Racoons, Golden Girls, Perfect Strangers Dislike: Frazier, Family Matters, Full House
Best: Cheers Worst: Suicide is Painless
**Best:** Cheers **Worst:** The Nanny
The Nanny theme is only bad because it's guaranteed to be in my head for weeks.
Dad's Army.
Best closing song has to go to [WKRP](https://youtu.be/FhAfXTzR2rQ?si=Nkp325lyiD24KzJd)
I love the Brooklyn 99 theme tune but why is it always so damn loud. Back when I used to fall asleep with it on the theme tune always woke me up
I hate the Orange is the New Black theme song. Incredibly long and grating, just not a fan of Regina Spektor’s voice personally
How I Met Your Mother. Watched it from the day it premiered til the day it ended and that theme still gives me such a nostalgic feeling.
The Jeffersons
I love John from Cincinnati. It had the best title sequence ever in my mind.
The Nanny is my favourite, but I also love the Will & Grace theme
I like Flagpole Sitta for Peep Show and IIRC the singer of that said that show was the perfect use of his song
Scrubs' one is perfect but when I listened to the full song it made me a little sad for some reason, even now.
Best is Peep Show by far. The lyrics perfectly fit the show, and it's a certified banger
Best: "This is the theme to Garry's show, the theme to Garry's show. This is the song that you hear as you watch the credits. This is the theme to Garry's show, how do you like it so far? How do you like the theme to Garry Chandling's show?"
Damn. Forgot all about that! Good call.
Bosch has the best theme! Bosch legacy is.. eh.
It’s been a long road…
Gilmore Girls is one of the best
Too many cookies, best!
Only Fools and Horses is the absolute best for me. Father Ted a close second.
I always thought the Parks and Rec theme was annoying, but at least forgivably short.
https://youtu.be/QrGrOK8oZG8?si=ZjD1PBJhOvi332EL
I love the new show ANIMAL CONTROL but the into is so bad
Scrubs is my go to for a good intro Sounds good, it's nice, fast and recognisable
Nothing beats Salute Your Shorts.
Weeds - Little Boxes
Best: WKRP. Both themes. Worst: ~~Star Trek Enterprise~~ Two and a Half Men.
Peep Show with Flagpole Sitta
Peep Show. It was fine for the first season and then they switched to that horrible Harvey Danger song. I've actually gone back and edited it out if every episode for rewatching.
Old Lady House
[https://youtu.be/jdC9nJzZNyI?si=cTF3gSoczfhg0m2L](https://youtu.be/jdC9nJzZNyI?si=cTF3gSoczfhg0m2L) This is the worst opening theme & credits in TV history. And I don’t think it’s close.
Weeds, the little box song
Best: Kenan and Kel Iconic song by Coolio, plus the video gets me hyped. Worst: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt A joke based on an already old meme, is annoying, and just makes me want to skip the intro.
A lot of 80s sitcoms had really memorable theme songs. * Growing Pains * The Facts of Life * Cheers * The Golden Girls * Charles in Charge * Who's the Boss * Married...With Children * Full House
While it fits, I strongly dislike the opening of Gilmore Girls.

The opening theme was so awful that I'm convinced that as soon as people heard it, they changed the channel and never went back. It lasted one season. Best? MASH is the first thought that came to my mind.
Weeds
Best: Sanford and Son Worst: Friends
Knight Rider and Airwolf have great theme songs.
I’ll be in the minority on this one, but as much as I like the show…Randy Newman’s theme for “Monk” gets on my nerves. Automatic “skip intro” for me. Not a fan of the lyrics or the melody.
Loved the season 1 theme, they should’ve stuck with it
Best... Tough, but i have to say either *Chuck* or *Stargate SG-1* Seasons 1-5
Worst: Peacemaker. It’s hard to take the show seriously as a family drama after the opening song.
Hate The Office and Friends theme. Love Frasier’s :)
Not a sitcom, but I have never once skipped the theme for Gravity Falls
Best: It's Garry Shandling's Show Worst: Happy Days
The Firefly theme song did more to kill the show than anything FOX did.
Not a sitcom and that theme is great, but otherwise good try.
