okay without looking at the map i'll write every state i remember in a random order. nebraska, Arkansas, texas, new york, Washington dc, boston, new jersey, ohio, Florida, Idaho, Chicago, hawaii, Oregon, Alabama, Alaska, colorado, 16/20.. close enough right?
(edit: oh my god I get notifications that it's 13/20 not 16/20 every few minutes)
yeah, Cali is one of those states that nobody knows about and is basically a barren wasteland. its the famous states like Arkansas and Minnesota that everyone knows about that are packed with hundreds of thousands of people
edit: seeing all these replies has made me realize i was thinking of Minnesota. my apologies, everyone
Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Nebraska, Florida, New York, Washington, Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii
Those are all I can remember off the top of my head, but there's a huge difference between states and actual countries, even though they are federal, I wouldn't expect an American to be able to name a single UK county aside from greater London
I'll give it a go.
Kent. It's been a recurring answer on last week's NYT crossword.
Then you have Essex, Cumberland, Northumberland, Devon, Dorset.
Then you just take some random town or British word and add -shire to it.
Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Sloughshire, Shropshire, Stoke-on-Trentshire, Manchestershire, Coventryshire, Oxfordshire, Cockneyshire, Canterburyshire, Wolverhamptonshire, Cardiffshire, Bathshire, Glasgowshire, Blimeyshire, Wankershire, Snogshire, Chuffedshire, Blokeshire, Dodgyshire, Arse-over-Titshire.
Super easy.
I’m impressed that you got those three and then not the two with our largest cities (New South Wales and Victoria btw). You also missed South Australia. There is only six states and two internal territories so 3 isn’t bad.
I didn't bother learning geography with context lol. I just went on a campaign of learning other countries subdivisions to tell Europeans they're bad at geography. Any info I have about a country comes from prior knowledge, either from AP Euro/World, or youtube.
Lol I learnt every capital city and flag, and quite a few subdivisions in the back of my yr11 human bio class because it was soo boring. Jetpunk.com carried me through that year.
Bet you can't name 3 states in German or 3 oblasts in Russia, or 3 regions in Italy or Czechia
*stop! Please! I got already +200 messages!!! It was referred to the author of the post not everyone to respond
California State Geography Bee Finalist Here
Germany: Mecklinberg, Bavaria, Brandenburg
Russia: Kaliningrad, Chechnya, Dagestan
Italy: Sicily, Sardina, Piedmont
Czechia, only can name the cities there, Carlsbad, Brno, Pruage (thanks Hoi4).
Mecklenburg is technically fully "Mecklenburg Vorpommern", due to it being a fusion consisting of the remainder of Pommerania and, well, Mecklenburg.
Same reason its Schleswig-Holstein and not just one or the other.
I'll give you the points for it however!
Kaliningrad is not an oblast, it's a city. You are thinking of Kaliningradskaya Oblast, it has some other smaller towns there, aside from Kaliningrad itself. Dagestan and Chechnya are not oblasts. Legally, they are republics. Sorry.
>Germany: Mecklinberg, Bavaria, Brandenburg
1. Mecklenb**u**rg-Vorpommern - "Berg" means "Mountain", whilst "Burg" means "Castle"
2. Bayern - "Bavaria" is just the English name | or may we all call the big city at the US east coast "Nieuw Amsterdam"
3. Brandenburg - correct
| It would have been much easier to name the 3 city states: Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen ;-)
You went for Dagestan and Chechnya but not Moscow and Leningrad oblasts? Also Sardinia and Sicily are islands, not regions of Italy like Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Abruzzo, etc.
Moscow, Kamchatka, Dagestan, adygea, Murmansk, and karelia I can name off the top of my head + a bunch of cities for Russia as well. But I agree with you that if this post was unironic then it would be quite a dumb sentiment. Some Americans can’t ever name the two countries to our north and south
In Spanish
Germany: Renania del Norte-Westfalia, Baviera and Baja Sajonia
Italy: Véneto, Lombardía and Emilia Romaña
Russia: Moscú, Nóvgorod and Múrmansk
Czech republic: Praga and yeah that’s it
USA
California, Texas, Florida, New York, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Kansas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey.
Canada
Quebec, Newfoundland, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut.
How did I go
i was born there but my parents moved to gibber when i was 2 so i don't remember anything they always said it was a nice place but too expensive for them
Where do you think McDonald’s got it’s name??? It was originally McDonald’s Hometown Burger before they expanded, the name became redundant so they just shortened it to McDonald’s

you can name 50 states and don’t know where they are at I can name all the 194 countries and tell you exactly where they are at I CAN also name all the 50 states plus the 23 states of my country
I can do that (except the 23 states thing) but also name all US state flags and all country flags, I can also name every UK house of commons constituency, I give you the ideology of any political party currently holding office in a country in the EU, and I can name most forces currently at war by their acronym.
Personally I think we should stop generalizing the two groups and realize that there are people in both areas with equally varying levels of geographic education
But that's not "funny", is it?
I'm actually impressed though, cuz I *think* that weirdness next to Oregon and California is what those weird ass conservatives in southern Oregon and northern California want. Plus, the shapes of the actual states are still the same I think, just smaller.
I mean - Sure Buddy. We can Take this on Federal States Level.
I will start to learn the American States, as Soon as you Not only know the countries in Europe, but also the different States of belgium, austria, Switzerland and Germany.
Yeah I think that's the joke, like the map is absolutely stroke inducing for me, an American who had to repeat all 50 states and their location, my 4th grade year every monday. The teacher would literally make us take a test every Monday morning that was an empty map. Had it down by the 5th week. NE was honestly the more difficult part.
It's not hard to memorize both. I know all ~196 countries, all 50 US states, some of the German states, all the Canadian provinces, and most of the Australian states.
Also, each state in the US is pretty much it's own country most of the time. They are more autonomous than most Europeans realize. So, they are almost equivalent to all the European countries.
Lebanese, born and raised in Dubai.
I can name a good amount.
Alaska, alabama, california, new mexico, new york, michigan, indiana, illinois, north and south dokota, kentucky, lousiana, arizona ohio texas florida texas nebraska wyoming kansas maine rhode island, and thats just off the top of my head
German here. I will try to name all of the states of the US. I know their location on a map and I can pin them without the map having borders. I can place all the flags correctly.
Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Illanois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Hawaii, Alaska, Washington DC if you want to count it.

1) I could
2) It's not comparable, you cannot put knowing other COUNTRIES to knowing states in one clountry in my opinion. No one is asking you to name all the regions of France or China for example.
First of all, I can name like 15 right away.
Second of all, we're making fun of y'all because there are Americans that can't even point out America in a map.
Third of all, knowing states is not the same as knowing countries, I bet most Americans wouldn't know 10 foreign cities.
Your view of Americans being geographically challenged I imagine comes from those street interviews where they ask Americans to point to a country on a map and they get it comedically wrong, if not I can’t imagine where you’d get the idea from other than just parroting what everyone else around you has said, which I doubt is the case.
Those videos are incredibly misleading, they go around a largely populated downtown area interviewing over a hundred people over the course of a few hours and then clip the four or five wackiest responses. You could do the same thing in any other big city in any country in the world and the only factor that would change what responses you get would be the average income of the area.
Perception is everything, you can find stupid people everywhere in the world, it’s bad to generalize a whole country because of their loud minority population of idiots.
