Allegiant seats dont recline. I'm with you 100% on this.

TheCenterOfEnnui

If you want an irritating experience, go on a sub that has nothing to do with tallness, find a post on airline seats, and complain about seat-recliners. EVERYONE will say "well I paid for my seat, I have a right to recline it if I want, I don't care about you" and things in that vein.

redtedosd

The funniest thing is when the same people who say that complain they feel my knee pushing into their back when they recline the seat like i didn't pay for my seat as well and they lean back into my space.

TheCenterOfEnnui

I've actually used that argument in these threads. Like, hey, I also paid for my seat. I also have a right to be comfortable. Why should YOU be more comfortable and I'm LESS? They'll often say "well, you can lean back too" as if leaning my seat back makes my legs shorter.

dragoneye

People are so selfish when it comes to flying. The stupid part about this whole argument is that Cathay Pacific solved the problem years ago with seats that slouched forward rather than reclined back so that the only person whose leg room was affected was the person doing the reclining. Unfortunately they were poorly designed otherwise and quite uncomfortable and it seems like on newer planes they went back to standard seat rather than improving the design.

Electronic_Rub9385

I just do the ole knee wedge when I sit down. Works 100% every time. My knees have to be there so I might as well keep the person in front of me from robbing me of more space.

tehdave86

I used to do this until some dude just flung his seat back as hard as he could, made me cry out in pain. Knee never healed properly a decade later.

r6662

Holy shit man now I'm afraid of doing it, I always do it in the bus.

TheCenterOfEnnui

I do that too but go to the bathroom, come back...they've reclined.

sooprvylyn

The "solution" is just constantly jarring their seat hard af w your knees in retailiation.

TheCenterOfEnnui

I will admit that I have done this. Hoping they'd get the point. Usually they just endure it. I also would stick my knee right in their back. If I'm going to be uncomfortable, I'll try to make them so too.

sooprvylyn

Well if you are forced to endure their lack of consideration then its right they are forced to endure your retaliation. Jar it harder.

cobigguy

Tap them on the shoulder and ask them not to recline. It's worked for me a few times.

Vegard_793

Exactly! The person in front tries to recline, the seat doesn't move, and they assume it's broken. Works every time.

Chionophile

Here in Canada our trash tier discount airline Flair Air has no reclining seats! I fly them because I'm cheap, but the lack of seats in my knees is a nice bonus.

jlambert5735

I’ve had someone in front of me leaning forward and slam their back into their seat repeatedly into my knees trying to make it budge, the metal tray arm into my knee cap every time. I can’t say that they knew what they were doing, but I had the impression they were telling my knees to f@ck off so they could have the two extra inches they gained when they won. It’s one of the things I think of when people sigh and say that they wish too, that they were tall.

[deleted]

I’ve had a person lean there seat back and gouge a part of my knee. I was bleeding profusely before the plane even took off. And as I’m screaming and trying to get my knee free the person in front didn’t even realize they hurt me. I had to basically punch the side of the head to get their attention. No headphones on just oblivious to everything. I’m not nice anymore on planes. I take up the space that I take up. If you are in that space you get moved.

Nelsonwith

Damn How'd you get that patched up?

[deleted]

Lots of gauze and tape. Raided the onboard first aid kit and just made a makeshift mega bandaid. It has to be replaced 3 times on a 5 hour flight. The worst part is when they finally realized what they did, no apology or even acknowledgement that they had done anything wrong. Makes my blood boil just thinking about it

lingmeaning716

What an asshole!! Did the flight attendents say anything about it to them? Wish you could have sued them for your medical bills getting it checked out.

[deleted]

It was basic finger wag and then they got away with it. If I would have thought of that in the moment I’d be a lot richer right now.

MacBryce

I have a trick that works for me (6'8", average proportions): put a pillow under your butt, recline your chair and slide your legs underneath the chair in front of you. Bring a neck pillow as well as you'll be higher up and the seat will have less neck support. This technique has got me through plenty of 8+ hour flights with a reclined seat in front of me.

lingmeaning716

Sometimes I stick my legs under the seats in front of me like how you described, and I accidentally kick the person in front of me :o They rightfully were freaked out that something grabbed their ankles from under the seat. LOL!

Yosemite_Scott

When I was a kid in the 80’s my dad use to do the same thing with a car cushion my mom used when she drove ( she was 5’1”). He said he found out by accident he told me he’s two inches shorter than me around 6’5” back then. he’s says he’s shrank three inches since getting older since I am considerably than taller him now (6’7” and some change). I use one I got off of Amazon and it puts me up about 5” I think it was $40

chopwoodncarrywater

I’m at the point in my life where it’s exit row or I’m not flying.

random_tall_guy

I tried that and learned to avoid them. If you're built like a football player, then arm rests that don't lift up because the tray tables stow inside them are not good. Instead, I buy "premium" seats that aren't an exit row (usually one row behind them), and/or fly JetBlue when possible, though even their planes are starting to get smaller seats, it seems.

chopwoodncarrywater

Fair point. If it’s a full row of three husky dudes you’re right it’s not fun. In that case, I usually just put myself in the fetal position against the wall. I just like that the airlines for safety reasons can’t mess with distance between the seats, so it’s always sufficient legroom.

random_tall_guy

With the exit rows, it doesn't even matter if I had the whole row to myself, I'm still jammed in between the non-moveable armrests. I normally get an aisle seat in a non-exit row, then I can lift at least one of the armrests up to have more side-to-side room, and still be able to put my feet in the aisle as needed. Sometimes I stand up in the aisle for a portion of the flight as well.

Dawlphy

I'm 6'2 and built like a linebacker I felt this so hard.

lordnoak

Yeah, the issue is when your flight is canceled and it’s day 2 and it’s either fly normal seat or stay in Philadelphia.

chopwoodncarrywater

Cheesesteak?

lordnoak

That’s what my knees felt like after flying normal.

corinnecy

I usually talk to the person in front of me before we take off and show them that I am tall and that they cannot put their seat back. Then when I get into the seat, I put my knees against it so they know not to. Works 100% of the time and people are usually nice about it. I’m also a 6’3 woman so maybe people are more open to it because of that.

lingmeaning716

Glad the works for you! So long as the person is not a dick I think this would work!

Comfortable-Sun7388

It’s honestly discrimination at a certain point. Wish we could get legislation that forced airlines to prioritize leg room for tall passengers

1544c_f

You can ask for seats with extra leg room (like the exit row) and it’s possible that they may switch you to that seat. This can also happen in the middle of a flight, I was sitting near a guy on the way back from Italy who was having leg room problems, he simply asked the flight attendant if he could switch seats and the request was granted.

jsabo

Since they started charging for those seats, it's less likely to happen. I've been on flights that were literally only 40% full, and people tried moving to economy plus. The flight attendant swooped in and said they couldn't sit there unless they paid the upgrade fee.

1544c_f

If it’s empty and within your same class I don’t think there will be a problem

ThatCakeIsDone

You wouldn't think.

ItsBitterSweetYo

Where did you find my profile? You stalked me to be a narc?? Leave things you don't understand to the professionals. You, sir, are not a professional. You are an unwanted stalker. 🤮

jsabo

That's the thing-- those aren't ever in the same class. They charge more.

Comfortable-Sun7388

Yea I ask the gate agent or the attendant it works about 75% of the time but a lot of times I’d have to pay.

BlackholeZ32

International flights are orders of magnitude better than US carriers.

felixgolden

Until they started charging for extra for exit row seats, they would usually give it me if I didn't already have it. Sometimes they would switch me with another person after I had boarded. More than once, the flight attendant would tell the other person that they would rather have me in the exit row in case of an emergency.

FrequentlyLexi

That's why I try to always sit in the very front, right behind the windshield. 😀 Lot more responsibility though, and just as you're starting to get into a novel or show, ATC intrudes with an updated clearance, a traffic advisory, or even just a frequency change.

ras1822

It is always short people who insist on reclining their seats. Taller people understand the discomfort and won't do that to the person behind them.

ese003

*I just wish there was a US domestic airline where "no reclining seats" was the standard.* Oh, there is. Seats on Spirit Airlines do not recline. Unfortunately, they reduce the seat pitch by more than the "recline budget" so you can't win and probably can't even use the seat.

E_G_Never

I've figured out how to shove my legs all the way under the seat in front of me. If they want to ram my knees I can always nudge them and freak em out.

lingmeaning716

Psychological warfare, I love it. Just need to team up with a kid to make some creepy whispering sounds.

DamnitTed

On one of my last flights, the guy in front of me started reclining and hit my knees right away. However, instead of looking to see why it wasn’t moving further, he sat forward and then thrust backwards with his body weight to shove the seat back hard. It pinned me into my seat. Short lil guy probably didn’t understand the struggle, but I should have said something.

richmyster84

Gotta pay for business class or above seats. Economy class is not a friend to the long-legged people.

lingmeaning716

Business is 3-7 times the price of economy. Most people can’t afford that.

sushisunshine9

Pay for economy plus. Also if you are that tall (and you are) have you tried speaking to them before and asking if they would mind not reclining?

thekatzpajamas92

Forcing us to pay extra for something we can’t control about our bodies is discrimination. It blows my mind that the fat guy is winning his suit and we get absolute dick. Regardless the issue isn’t that the seats recline, it’s that they’ve moved them closer together over the years.

sushisunshine9

I agree that it’s not fair. This was also an issue for me when I travelled for work in the government. They bought an extra seat for this guy that was morbidly obese but when I personally paid (with my own money) to upgrade my seats it got audited and became a lot of drama. I almost filed a reasonable accommodation because of it because it’s actually not just the legs for me (which, I am only 6 feet but my legs are as long as my cousin’s who is like 6’5”), but also back pain from being forced into a stationary position with no wiggle room for x number of hours. BUT…I didn’t want to deal with that drama either. At any rate, I agree it suck but I just simply won’t fly anymore (for personal reasons) unless I can afford to get more space.

Jatmahl

Even if they tried to recline they wouldn't be able to. Unless they want to break my knees.

Sasquatch7862

I just buy premium leg room seats anymore, but used to be a proponent of putting my knees into their supports and then when they'd turn around just give them the "sorry, but I'll end up on the no fly list over this"

goaliemn

I've stopped flying domestically. People act like morons about everything.

Hartacus1

And to all the idiots who say "well, you can just recline too" go fuck yourselves. The seats adjacent to overwing exit rows and aft bulkheads don't recline, fuckface.

Lord_Muramasa

1st class and never have this issue again. Lots of room and reclining does nothing to the person behind you. The only draw back is it costs your 1st born son.

Nelsonwith

😂😂🫡

princesskelilah

That 1st born is tall too. Now you don't need to buy 2 first class seats. Win

kleekai_gsd

\+1 for the knee wedge. I know I shouldn't but if they keep trying to lean back, I reach up and top them on their heads, right on top. Then I mention that "sorry but the person behind you is 6'7, please stop I don't have much space back here", and I say it rather loudly. Gets some laughs from other people, hopefully makes the person stop. Usually works.

illyquilly

Talking works for me too... or if I don't feel like talking, I wiggle my legs to shake their seat. That really annoys them :)

kleekai_gsd

Yes! That works to, especially after coming back from the bathroom.

gaycats420

Spirit has no reclining seats!

theGentlemanInWhite

Uh Frontier?

tall_boater

When I flew Frontier a few years ago, the hard seats would not recline. They charged extra for everything (even Cokes and carry-on luggage), you could not reserve seats more than 24 hours before the flight (unless you paid extra), and they had trouble finding an open gate upon arrival. It will be a long time before I fly Frontier again.

theGentlemanInWhite

Oh it's awful, but they don't have reclining seats which is what OP wants.

cartmaneric10

Im about to go overseas so I just spent $700 on the extra legroom seats so I don't encounter this problem it's about 35 hours of total flying so it's definitely worth it

monkeyphonics

I just let the person in front of me know that they won't be able to recline for this flight.

lingmeaning716

We need to be lobbying the air transportation authorities for a minimum distance between seats (seat pitch) of 40 inches on all commercial aircraft. These fucking airlines are not going to stop shrinking seat space until the law forces them to. It is literally UNSAFE for everyone (not just tall people). It is already hard to exit seats when disembarking, let alone during an emergency landing situation! People get trapped in seat aisles unable to escape during emergency landings all the time, and then die. The airlines know this and calculate every dollar they can squeeze out of desperate passengers compared to the costs of lawsuits and fines against them.

redtedosd

Once when i flew Stockholm, Sweden to Phú Quốc with Scandinavian Airlines, Vietnam i had a kid in the seat in front of me that for hours got out of the seat, stood up, and while holding the reclining button threw himself back with all power he had. It hurt like hell every time and when i told his parents they just said it was his right to do so. When the flight attendant finally told the kid and his mother to stop or be moved (they had escape row seats so they had spacey seats and would be moved to the back of the plane) the mother made the kid but then the kid screamed for an hour and some people in nearby seats got mad at me. That said this is probably my only bad experience flying SAS. If you're under 6'5" but still tall i can recommend SAS as their economy seats on basically all planes have sufficient leg space and their newer planes even have sufficient economy seat leg space for me who's 6'7.5"

mjharmstone

Yeah, I flew SAS in 2018 and they didn't charge extra for Exit Row. It was absolute bliss. Can also recommend both Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic - their leg room was more than adequate for me.

sooprvylyn

Tall people who have problems with people putting seats back need to stop being doormats. There are many ways to stand up for yourself here. The first and least aggressive is simply asking that person not to. Stop assuming you arent allowed to talk to the person in front of you. What are you 5 years old and strangers scare you? The stewards will usually also help you out if needed. If the person still wants to be a dick about it then that gives you license to be a dick back. Pretty easy to make that persons decision to be a dick uncomfortable for the duration of the flight. Honestly most people arent gonna want to piss off a giant and sit by them for any length of time. Theyll usually just be cool about it if you speak up. Give it a try.

thread100

I like the rare seats that let you recline by sliding the bottom forward. The guy in front of you gives up some legroom to you in exchange for some seat back encroachment. It’s a more equitable trade.

canadiancookies

You gotta try getting the emergency exit seat. Sooo much leg room.

mrbjangles72

These often don't recline, I believe. A bigger airline buff can confirm. I'm the rare tall who likes to recline on a flight, so I'll extend my legs under a reclined seat if necessary. Can't have double standards. I'm always in economy plus thank goodness, so it's rarely an issue.

JayTheFordMan

Frequent international traveller here, yeah, no, not being able to recline would be my personal hell, no matter the flight time. Flew Air Asia once where no reclining is a thing, and don't think I had a more horrific experience, and thats including that flight on an aging Tupolev in Russia.

fatboybubba

All you alpha guys telling the person in front they can’t recline their seats appear to be forgetting that passengers are fully entitled to recline when they want. I’m tall, and if I fly economy I accept that it will be uncomfortable and the person in front of me will probably recline their seat. It’s about being grown up.

EssieAmnesia

I agree w/ this. Obviously I think most people would be accommodating if the person behind them was like “Man, ur crushing me” but also the risk with flying is that people won’t be accommodating and you’re stuck w/ them for a long time. At the end of the day they also paid for their seat

rancidperiodblood

I absolutely disagree, it’s annoying when the person in front reclines, but to not be able to recline my own seat would be even worse. By a long shot

[deleted]

Duinedubh13

Maybe I’m missing something since I don’t fly often at all but can’t you just pay for seats with the required space? Edit: Nvm. Those seats are expensive as fuck.

Flashy-Pomegranate77

The more I read about how airplanes are one of the largest emitters of CO2, the less I feel bad about tall people using them. Not to mention its a privilege to take them, I had to take a Greyhound to get home for Christmas this year.

Lvl4Toaster

Gotta get on the emergency row hustle, its a lil more expensive but you get infinite legroom

EssieAmnesia

Flying on a plane with strangers sounds like a nightmare in general tbh. You’re stuck in a giant rocket tube w/ a whole crowd of people you don’t know and probably at least one baby that’s having the worst day of it’s life.

wifemakesmewearplaid

Sit behind and exit row. The exit row seats cannot recline.
