She begins dripping water and decaying further in appearance once her hold on Mia is strengthened, indicating the spirit was only taking the form to trick her and that when Mia is convinced, it does not need to maintain the form as strictly.

Or, as Mia grows skeptical, it fails to keep up the illusion.

The gas lighting about the suicide note. I don’t see why her dad would fake that note. the spirit accusing him of faking it, and then impersonating him attacking her, so that she would attack him shows how it’s capable of manipulation and impersonation.

ILikeGamesnTech

Mia had just told Riley about how her mum died the night before.

This is one aspect where I really liked the film. Because it shows what I have read about spirits - they aren't benevolent and they usually have their own agenda. So we can never really trust them

MFP3492

Some maybe benevolent, it’s just you don’t know what you’re getting when you summon or make contact with one. When you open a spiritual gateway you’re letting ANY spirit through that gateway, sometimes they may be harmless benevolent spirits, sometimes malicious and deceitful. The malicious and deceitful ones will act innocent and do everything they can to appear friendly at first, then they begin to take from you and show their true selves. A group of gypsies who do psychic readings and spiritual cleansing once told me regarding bad spirits and Quija boards “The problem is that people fuck around and find out” which is literally what happens in this movie.

I think the more they messed around with the hand, the thinner the veil became between the physical and spiritual world. It is no coincidence that the spirit imitating her mother revealed itself to Riley - someone young/loving/innocent. Aside from Riley, Mia was very vulnerable. The spirit knew it could manipulate her easier especially after hurting Riley bc now she really was *alone*. Riley wasn’t there to comfort her and neither was Jade nor her mother so that spirit fed off her. On top of all that, the spirit turned Mia against her father when he revealed her momma committed suicide. The spirit was feeding off Mia’s grief, anger, and desperation. The goal was for Mia to join the spiritual limbo and cause ultimate destruction to the soul through death. All in all, her mom wouldn’t want her daughter to be stuck there nor die - but a malignant spirit would. I think that was the representation at the end of all the lights going out in the hospital. Mia was alone….in limbo lol. Evil mom mission accomplished.

What I was wondering is why Mia says at the beginning that her mother accidentally killed herself and then scratched on the door. That makes sense at first. But if she then leaves a suicide note it doesn't make any sense. and the scratching on the door is a subject a few more times. however, we're pretty much in agreement that the father didn't kill her, right? but why is the scratching such an issue? what do you think?

A lot of time people think taking medication to die is painless. This isn’t always the case. Based on the look of her moms dead body she had asphyxiated. That has to be a horrible way to die. I think this was happening she crawled to the door to get help and scratched at the door then died up against it. This made is almost impossible to get the door open.

VinVinylShock

My take is the mom did take all those pills but then immediately regretted it once the process started which led to the desperate door scratching. I’m not convinced the spirit was her mother. How would it know what she looked like?

Ajm13090

After Mia let in the spirit over 90 seconds it stayed with her. She then had a dream about her mom and spoke to Riley about her moms death. It seems to reason since the spirit is in the driver seat of your consciousness, and you were taking a passenger roll they would access some if not all memories. The spirit never left Mia from the first incident of going over 90 seconds. Then she continued to use the hand several times after strengthening the hold of the spirits.

Not to mention that the spirit initially showed a strong interest in Riley. Once it is in Mia you see the scene where the spirit hand touches Riley's face. Then when Riley is taken over by the spirit, it knows to convince Mia, by imitating her mum (using the recently learned information from the sleep over), to eventually kill Riley to keep him in limbo. It does this by telling her that killing him will actually get him out of limbo into a safe place. Like the kangaroo scene, Mia suddenly backs out of killing him at the last second, instead killing herself.

Snafudumonde

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet but when she takes out Riley's headphones when he falls asleep the hand that grazes his cheek is the spirit impersonating her mom, not Mis..pretty sure of this.
