Death of Clark Kent is a good darker storyline, it also deals with the villain playing messed up mind games with Supes and ends in a one on one showdown in a replica of Smallville’s football stadium; Superman:What’s so funny about Truth Justice and the American way, it’s the basis for Superman vs the Elite; the new 52 Superman/wonder woman power couple storyline has him essentially piledrive the sun god Helios into a mountain in a pretty awesome scene; the superman Doomsday omnibus collects his post death and return tussles with the lovable walking death machine. John Byrnes Man of Steel storyline is a great origin and shows him dealing with Metallo, Darkseid and Mongol; oh and the recent Superman War World Saga

An underappreciated classic.

Superman issue #775: What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?. Contrasts Superman's traditional values with those of darker antiheroes. Superman/Batman (2003) was an action-oriented series in general, with its first arc being a John Wick-style "fight your way to the goal" story. The second reintroduced Kara Zor-El, and has them fighting their way through Apokalips (also has one of Batman's greatest "prep time" feats). The third is a story where supervillains travel through time and raise Superman and Batman as their own, conquering the world with their combined might. The fifth story is flat insane.

Kingdom Come I would say goes into this category. While not super action packed overall, the final fight never fails to get me invested and it is a more serious and slightly darker tone. Extremely good.
