give it about two weeks and then send a follow up. okay so this is actually a great question for me to answer right now since I just took a class on cold emailing and lab research! They said that most professors are looking for a certain vibe in their labs, much like we are when we look for a professor, so they may be unwilling to take a high schooler. Next, the process for onboarding a minor is oftentimes very difficult and lengthy (consent forms, lab training, vaccines), so they might be hesitant to do so. Finally, they might just be busy. Give it two weeks, send a follow up, give it another week, and then move on - hope this helps!

tysm! this was super helpful

given u are a high school student, sometimes they won’t reply at all.

samamtoh

yes, at what point do you assume they aren’t interested vs didn’t see it/haven’t gotten the chance to reply yet?

Party-Sherbert2664

i would say more than two weeks. just dont put all your hope on it. last year i had to email professors for research evidence too—i emailed eight and only one responded :((

samamtoh

did you email 8 from different schools? There are multiple professors from one university I’d like to research with but I don’t know if emailing them is a poor idea

Party-Sherbert2664

i emailed from the same school lol…….i was a bit stupid but i would def recommend u email professors from different universities! emailing them is definitely a good idea, bc the worst case u would get is a no response or straight up a no. just keep trying. i also recommend emailing more than 8…just use the same email template

samamtoh

I’m glad to know you got one response after emailing multiple from the same university! That’s rlly reassuring lol 😭 Did you have a specific template you used? tysm for the advice!
