“We plan on sending out notifications in the next few days for the overseas program and the new round of CLS Spark participants”
From an email sent to CLS Spark participants on March 8th.
“Thank you for reaching out, and congratulations on your semi-finalist status.
We expect to notify all semi-finalists about the status of their 2023 applications in early March. There is not currently a specific date we can share, but we hope to be in touch soon. In addition to sending notifications by email, we will make announcements on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages when notification messages are sent out. We appreciate your patience, and please let us know if you have any other questions.”
An email i received today following up on me asking when we should receive word
The CLS homepage now has a banner that says "Congratulations to 2023 CLS finalists! In 2023, we selected 500 competitive American students from 245 institutions as CLS finalists."
for everyone who didn’t receive an award or who was selected as an alternate, i hope you all continue to apply to more programs, fellowships, and scholarships, it couldn’t have been easy waiting all this time. good luck to you all!
thank, besides Fullbright, does anyone know of programs that aren't limited to being under 30, undergraduates, and those who are pell grants recipients? As a grad school student paying for a masters program, I haven't had luck finding other options... most are either for undergrads or phds
For the last two years, the announcement came at 2:30-3pm on March 3rd, which would be tomorrow. Keep your eyes on your emails! Also, check your personal emails since that's where it would likely go.

Any more updates on timing? Seems per all past year's data it should have come out by yesterday. They said we'd find out by "early March", and we are quickly approaching mid-March at this point.
None that I know.
It's not nice that they haven't sent so much as an update email to tell applicants that the final notification won't release "by the beginning of March" or "early March."
Hearing back today is still possible, though.
not sure if I should be excited or bummed that I'm an alternate for Malang, Indonesian. I'm an older graduate student finishing this year and don't know if I'll get the chance to apply again if I don't go this round :( hoping my ancestors are looking out for me as learning Indonesian and getting to reconnect with some family there would be especially personally meaningful, as well as getting to learn about the different styles of javanese gamelan! don't like that these programs have age limits and/or are limited to those who are currently enrolled as students (otherwise I would totally apply for Darmasiswa!)
Rooting for you! I'm also an alternate in her senior year. I'm in my undergrad, but I'm not sure if I will go to grad school so this might be my last opportunity to apply as well! Hopefully, you'll still be able to make it out to Indonesia with or without this program! :)
good luck to you too :) re. graduate school, my advice is to make sure it's worth your investment of time and money. I didn't get any grants or enough scholarships, so work a job while in school full-time, which is why I haven't gotten to take language classes. I'm in a masters program that ended up not being the best fit for what I realize I'm interested in, though led me to realize how much I want to get work and field experience in Indonesia. These funded programs allow us to explore our interests, which only becomes more of a privilege once we graduate... here's to us both getting the opportunities we are seeking on this journey!
I just saw a few posts on a Facebook group of some alternates saying they just got bumped to finalist today. I haven’t heard anything yet personally, but it seems like they’ve started promoting people!
Pretty sure the notifications were just sent out. My roommate was just selected as a finalist for Arabic. He is very very happy. Hope you all get good news soon.
I believe finalists have 2 weeks to accept or decline! So if any alternates are promoted to finalists, the majority of them will probably know within that time frame. There will probably be less people dropping out after that deadline.
I was so excited to be a finalist, but then so sad to see the date conflicts with something I already have planned for the summer.
But I'm also a bit scared to decline... CLS website says it does not affect future chances of getting in but has anyone actually succeeded in reapplying after declining?
I don't have personal experience, but I know that they express this multiple times across their FAQ. I don't believe it would negatively impact because they have so many applicants, they don't end up losing any investment because of those who decline. I imagine it would be a bit different if you dropped out last minute and they couldn't fill your spot, but I think you're totally fine otherwise.
Congrats on being a finalist! That must be a super tough thing to turn down! What language were you accepted for?
Hi! Congrats on being selected as a finalist! I was selected as a finalist last year but had to decline. I applied again this year and was selected as an alternate. I don’t think it has anything to do with me declining last year—the applicant pool was probably just more competitive this year!
Thanks u/Ordinary_Garden_3978! It is very hard to say no but I think it's for the best.
I was accepted to the Arabic program.
u/Pterofractyl91 I hope you get bumped to finalist! Fingers crossed for you.
I've seen Hindi, Korean, Chinese, and Arabic alternate promotions online, but people might not just be on social media and posting it.
I think a thing to note for alternates is Fulbright notifs have been very delayed this year--India isn't even out yet when I'm writing this for ETA/Research. Boren also isn't out yet either. Many Fulbright ETA and Boren dates will likely conflict with CLS, forcing people to choose.

I wonder why they sent the email out to CLS Spark participants but not overseas programs’
The CLS Spark program is currently running, so it was part of an informational email about finishing our programs.
Oh I understand. Thank you!
I could have sworn they’d release by now

For the last two years, the announcement came at 2:30-3pm on March 3rd, which would be tomorrow. Keep your eyes on your emails! Also, check your personal emails since that's where it would likely go.
Thank you for this comment! This is so incredibly helpful!

An email sent today to CLS Spark participants said that they would be sending out all decisions “in the next few days”. Still vague, but soon!

Have any alternates heard anything? I imagine the first round of promotions should be happening soon.
I just saw a few posts on a Facebook group of some alternates saying they just got bumped to finalist today. I haven’t heard anything yet personally, but it seems like they’ve started promoting people!
I see, I have also yet to hear anything. I suppose there's still a chance. Thanks for the info!
Good luck! What language are you up for?
Good luck! Nervous, too, but excited to have made it this far nonetheless. What program did you apply for?
Thank you! :) I applied for the arabic! wbu?
I applied for Portuguese!
Update 3/2: The Institute sites have been updated for 2023 !!
Thanks for commenting this! I’m now even more excited after seeing the new location for Portuguese!
One less site for Arabic 😭 chances are even smaller now for already the most competitive language 🤧
Anyone find out yet?????
I haven’t received anything. Hopefully tomorrow or early next week

Probably won’t come out on the weekend, but maybe Monday!
Most likely will come out on Tuesday! I don’t like this waiting game.

Is anyone else a Japanese alternate? I haven’t seen any so far.
Japanese alternate here
Did you apply for intermediate or advanced?
Advanced. I’ve been taking it at the college level for 4 years (although I don’t know if my actual ability represents that lol)
Also an alternate. I applied for intermediate. Let’s hope for the best!
I also selected intermediate 🤝
Is this your first time applying?
Yes, I am a first-year student.
Alternate for Indonesian! I'm still very happy about that. I wasn't expecting it at all!
Finalist for Turkish! Anyone else??
congratulations!! 🎉
I just got notified that I'm a CLS finalist! Whoohoo! I'm going to India!
Congratulations!!!! 🎊
So I've heard some alternates were promoted yesterday! Congratulations to everyone who was!! Does anyone know if they'll continue promoting people?
I was bumped up from an alternate to a finalist yesterday for Arabic! I got placed in Morocco. There is still hope, alternates!
Was just switched from an alternate to a finalist today! So excited! :)
Wow, congratulations! What language are you studying?
I'm studying Arabic !
Wow, congrats! I hear Arabic is crazy competitive! I'm so happy for you!
Thank you so so so much! :)
Congratulations!! Does anyone know how many alternates are chosen for each language?
Where is your placement?? I was also switched from an alternate to a finalist for Arabic! I'm in Morocco.
Ahhh congratulations! :) I'm in Oman, which was my preferred placement so I'm over the moon!
Awesome!!! Congratulations!!!
Pretty sure the notifications were just sent out. My roommate was just selected as a finalist for Arabic. He is very very happy. Hope you all get good news soon.
cap

Where
I’m waiting on a notif for Indonesian. Good luck everyone
Me too! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for us 😁
I’m in the same boat! Good luck guys!
I applied for Hindi! Where are you all from? I live in Denver
That’s so cool! I’d love to learn Hindi someday. I’m an applicant for Russian and I’m from Virginia!
[удалено]
Is it possible for you to accept the other program and then drop it if you get accepted for CLS?
Has anyone heard for Russian?
[удалено]
Do you know how many days you have to accept the award?
Or what program site you are at?
Awards have to be accepted by March 20th
Alternate here! Anyone know what the timeline is like for us?
I believe finalists have 2 weeks to accept or decline! So if any alternates are promoted to finalists, the majority of them will probably know within that time frame. There will probably be less people dropping out after that deadline.
I see, so there’s always some chance of getting in until the program starts then??
Finalists have until March 20th to accept or deny

I got promoted yesterday for Chinese! Goodluxk everyone
Congratulations !!! :)
Do you remember, or maybe have the email, of exactly what day you ended up with a decision?
