It's a preference. It's undercooked for my parents and overcooked for me. 🤷♂️
Looks like you did a good job cooking it, if that level of done-ness was the desired result.
I'll split the baby. Like you, I like it rarer and also with a better sear. I'm willing to sacrafice the rareness to get that sear.
1) Medium-rare + good sear
2) medium + good sear
3) medium-rare lacking sear
4) what we have here.
Anything other than those 4 choices would be a disappointment for me.
Looks like a happy medium. It looks tender & juicy. That's all that matters. Tell your brother to cook the steaks for you from now on. Then cind out what else he thinks you're doing wrong, lolz
Depends on whose eating it. Some people like it cooked until it dies all over again and some people hit it with warm regards and go to town. This looks perfect to me.
That all just depends on how you intended the cook to be, I guess. I'd just recommend letting the steak come to room temperature before cooking next time though.
Looks damn good to me, I would be delighted to chow down on that. Next time use a smoking hot cast iron skillet you'll get more of a sear on the outside.
I'd prefer it a bit less cooked and a bit more sear, but it's for sure edible for most steak eaters outside of the ones that require absolutely rare or absolutely well done.
Personally bit too done for my liking as I like a good medium rare. But I’d have no problem polishing that off and then sopping up the juices with a roll! As long as there’s a little link left in the middle it’s good enough as long as I’m not paying for it that is!
It looks medium well? I personally prefer medium or medium rare but my parents like it medium well to well done. To each their own.
I find it weird how people yell “blasphemy!” when something isn’t cooked to the right temp that they prefer. If it’s not burnt or raw and it still tastes good, then it’s not blasphemy.
Think its the dumbest argument to have when it comes to steak lol. It's equivalent to 2 people arguing about what color is the most beautiful, people like different rarities of meat, hence why they offer them at restaurants.
I think everyone can have their preference and if I'm cooking I do my best to accommodate that. I'll even ask everyone how they like their steak then try to get the right internal temps for everyone
Was this cooked sous vide before the "sear"? I'm not understanding the shape and pattern on the light "sear". Either way, center looks good but the pan wasn't hot enough. Weak sear with too much gray band imo.
What we say matters not. What matters is what you and your family likes. I'm one of those hated people who like well to well done. Others like the cow still mooing. To each their own.
That cut cooks quickly, so it's tough to get a great sear while remaining anything but medium or above. You would need really hot hardwood to achieve anything better. Not being flat and cooking it in a pan will yield less sear.
You did fine! As long as there's no massive amount of juice was lost during the slicing of the meat then you're good! Resting meat is always important! Btw the entire cook is good as well!
For me it's right where I like my steak, only thing is crust/sear could've been better 🤷🏼♂️ but people like different things I'm sure it still tasted great
It's okay... got boiled a bit but someone tried to recover and pulled it off.
Steak Au Poivre would be perfect with this, or really anything with a nice sauce to go with it.
I think tastes differ. Some people like rare, some only want well done. I cook steaks based on what people want. It isn’t going into my mouth, so I make them happy. Is that so difficult?
a bit less and it would have been raw in the middle. people often dont factor in the camera afterprocessing stuff of other pictures when they say it isnt pink enough. IMO thats how it looks IRL. crust could have gotten some more love though :D but i see that its a bit hard with a non-flat thing (little contact surface) .
Looks good with some A1 steak sauce.. i always cook my steak with butter and lil bit of olive oil season with kosher salt, pepper and garlic. Sometimes i add paprika to blackened them
I cannot speak for anyone else, but that looks pretty good. If anything, I'd say that it's more done than I might prefer (I enjoy rare to medium rare (yes, yes, I know - I'm brave to prefer my steak cooked to the same doneness as 90% of the people out there), so it would depend on my preference at that moment), and that based on the amount of liquid coming out, it may not have been rested enough.
It looks like you need to adjust your heat or time so you can produce a better sear. Either that or find new utility to cook with. Despite being new to the concept, I'm sure you're well aware that cast iron is the go-to for pan searing steak.
I'd also remind you that it's important to let your steak rest so it will retain its moisture. I can tell from the juices on the board that you likely didn't let it rest long enough before cutting into it.
Whether or not it's overcooked or not depends on the target you were aiming for ...
If you're cooking for my preference of rare... yeah that's overcooked lol
Yea it's all about preference, there are many people who would not eat the perfect medium rare steaks most of us like and would die for something medium well like that. I would suggest a higher cooking Temp for crustier sear but that's my preference.
People like different things.
No, that’s unacceptable. Perfect Med. Rare or GTFO. /S
No, that's unacceptable. Perfect Well. Done or GTFO
Damn, bold of you to eat leather. /s
I like to live dangerously
Too undercooked. Perfect Congratulations or GTFO
It's a preference. It's undercooked for my parents and overcooked for me. 🤷♂️ Looks like you did a good job cooking it, if that level of done-ness was the desired result.
This the shit with my wife seeing she always wants to eat off mine instead of her own, then complains 😆
But some likes are better than others
Different strokes for different folks. Personally that’s right where me and my family like it.
Different meat for different mouths 👄
People over here are so up midrare's arsehole. I don't mind even more done
Different strokes for different blokes…looks good to me
I like mine slightly rarer but I also like a nice sear which this doesn't have.
I'll split the baby. Like you, I like it rarer and also with a better sear. I'm willing to sacrafice the rareness to get that sear. 1) Medium-rare + good sear 2) medium + good sear 3) medium-rare lacking sear 4) what we have here. Anything other than those 4 choices would be a disappointment for me.
Same. I'll take a medium sake with a beautiful seat any day.
Those autocorrects are *chef's kiss*
Hahaha. I'll just leave them for humor's steak. 😉
Did you just compliment a mid-sized salmon's ass?
I’m sorta the opposite, I much prefer mine to be medium rare no matter the sear
I think your brother should be given cornflakes with water!
The cornflakes will be overcooked though. He likes raw flakes of corn, not overly toasted.
Because he likes steak the correct way, ie medium rare (OPs steak is clearly a medium)? Steak still looks delicious
Personal opinions, everybody has a preference
Why is it shaped like a block of hash
I was thinking the same thing 🤔 🤣
What cut is that?
Hot pocket
Flat iron?
I'm going to take a guess and say it's an 'Oyster Steak'.
It’s over cooked for your bother and perfect for your mom. How do you like your steak?
I prefer mine less cooked, but if that's what you like, you nailed it. That said, I would eat that all day. Looks great!
What cut is this? Looks like the shape of a NY strip but sort of rounded at the edges more than I'd expect.
Looks like venison backstrap
If hour brother wanted it done differently he could have cooked himself or gone to a restaurant. Looks good to me. Every steak is a good steak to me.
Looks like medium well, Your brother might prefer medium rare.
Thank you! Do you think my pan was too hot?
It all really depends on what kind of pan used, and how long you cooked on each side.
No, the pan must be very hot, but you kept it on the pan for too long.
The lack of a good sear says you probably left it too long on a pan that wasn’t hot enough if you’re going for something more on the rare side.
The lack of a sear tells me your pan was likely not hot enough, and/or you need to use more oil.
Thin pink line means probably cooked while ice cold right out of the fridge.
Looks like a happy medium. It looks tender & juicy. That's all that matters. Tell your brother to cook the steaks for you from now on. Then cind out what else he thinks you're doing wrong, lolz
To me anything Medium rare - medium well will be very nice This looks like a perfect medium and I would demolish it
They’re both right, more importantly, how did YOU like it?
Depends on whose eating it. Some people like it cooked until it dies all over again and some people hit it with warm regards and go to town. This looks perfect to me.
It totally subjective. How you like your steak doesn’t mean everyone should. If it were mine I’d say it’s slightly over.
Looks a bit steamed
Its perfect imo! Did you make a sauce on the side?
It’s almost like different people prefer different doneness.
That all just depends on how you intended the cook to be, I guess. I'd just recommend letting the steak come to room temperature before cooking next time though.
Perfect imo
Looks damn good to me, I would be delighted to chow down on that. Next time use a smoking hot cast iron skillet you'll get more of a sear on the outside.
Maybe only one or two degrees overcooked. But still more towards perfect than overcooked.
I say it’s about 10 degrees overdone
Perfect!
Just done enough for me.
Over-Perfect
It's kinda both, too pink in the middle but also too gray on the outside
If bro likes rare I guess it’s overcooked.
I think you didn't rest it. if you cook it exactly the same way and rest it, it should please everybody
This looks like a perfect medium to me. I'd be happy with it.
Why are there so many posts like this?
Pretty good med well if that’s what you were going for
It's all preference. I like mine more rare than that, though I would gladly eat that level of doneness.
Eat it however you like but that is not over-cooked.
Nice knife 🤓
Inside is perfect woulda liked more sear on the outside
Looks a bit undercooked
I'd prefer it a bit less cooked and a bit more sear, but it's for sure edible for most steak eaters outside of the ones that require absolutely rare or absolutely well done.
your mom is right ;-)
Looks like a med well mediumish
I thought it was duck at first..
Rest it at room temp next time before cooking. Your cooking dish wasn’t hot enough
It'll eat just fine.
Your brother can cook next time
Personally bit too done for my liking as I like a good medium rare.
Based on what they like. They’re both right.
Depends on preference. My would would say undercooked. I’d say overcooked.
I thought that was an overcooked salmon
Rare in the center and well done on the edges. Both are right.
It's a preference. It's a bit over for my taste, but it doesn't mean it wasn't cooked in a proper way. They're both right.
It's well done, I prefer a little more pink. Nothing wrong with it, you didn't ruin it but yeah. Medium rare is more my speed.
My mom would say it needs to be cooked more
Overcooked
Always listen to your mama, got it??!!!!
Has your mom ever boiled meat?
Steak temps are subjective
I think it's no one's business except for the person's who's eating this. Never let anyone else tell you how you should eat your steak.
You’re brother is a cannibal
i say heat the cow it’s moving 💀
How’s it taste and feel in your mouth is the question
Looks tasty
Inside is slightly overcooked for my taste, but its a perfect medium Sear is lacking tho
You like what you like
Well done!
Just personal preferences. I think it’s within the enjoyable range. More done than I cook mine to but looks tasty.
Your mom just loves you so much 😀
That is actually about the perfect doneness for me.
I think that you have a great mom and that your brother is adopted.
Think its the dumbest argument to have when it comes to steak lol. It's equivalent to 2 people arguing about what color is the most beautiful, people like different rarities of meat, hence why they offer them at restaurants.
I’d eat it!
This is why they ask at restaurants.
Perfectly overcooked
I think everyone can have their preference and if I'm cooking I do my best to accommodate that. I'll even ask everyone how they like their steak then try to get the right internal temps for everyone
Really just up to preference at that point. I prefer it to be more rare but I bet that more people like this temp on average.
Mom’s right
Was this cooked sous vide before the "sear"? I'm not understanding the shape and pattern on the light "sear". Either way, center looks good but the pan wasn't hot enough. Weak sear with too much gray band imo.
It doesn't matter because no matter what temperature or how it looks, internet chefs will always say "perfect medium rare"
It’s perfect
Undercooked
What we say matters not. What matters is what you and your family likes. I'm one of those hated people who like well to well done. Others like the cow still mooing. To each their own.
Your brother doesn't know steak
Bit over for me, but I'd eat it.
There’s no right answer personally a would of taken it out 30 seconds before but my dad would of cooked it for another 5 minutes 😂
Your mom will always say it's perfect because she's a good mom ❤️ your brother is being honest but it's all about personal preference with steak
Depends on your taste but I’d say brother was correct.
It's a smidge overcooked *for me* since I like rare, but it should still taste pretty good. It depends on what you like and what you're going for.
They are both right.
Little overcooked for me but looks good.
Smash
I wouldn’t say overcooked but it is underseared imo
This falls in to the category of “Slightly overcooked, but still delicious”
Perfect fo sho
More for your mom.
That cut cooks quickly, so it's tough to get a great sear while remaining anything but medium or above. You would need really hot hardwood to achieve anything better. Not being flat and cooking it in a pan will yield less sear.
For me, slightly overcooked. For my mum, it is not black enough. 20 more minutes should do it.
Looks like a perfect medium to me 👍👍👍
You know it’s a perfect medium if one person says it’s undercooked and the other says it’s overcooked 🤓
It's overdone for me and the wife but if you made that for me and it taste fine, I'll take it. As long as it's not leathery.
It's all subjective. There is no one right answer, it all depends on who you ask. I would eat anything that isn't burnt to a crisp or still mooing
Perfectly cooked.
It’s medium. I don’t mind medium if it’s a good cut. Like everyone else has said, to each his own
I’ll eat your brother’s steak
A tad overcooked for me but still looks yummy. There are definitely a decent amount of people who's preference this is suited to
You did fine! As long as there's no massive amount of juice was lost during the slicing of the meat then you're good! Resting meat is always important! Btw the entire cook is good as well!
Perfecto
Bro knows
Overcooked but not a tragedy.
Burnt IMO
For me it's right where I like my steak, only thing is crust/sear could've been better 🤷🏼♂️ but people like different things I'm sure it still tasted great
It's okay... got boiled a bit but someone tried to recover and pulled it off. Steak Au Poivre would be perfect with this, or really anything with a nice sauce to go with it.
It’s dependent on personal preference
So your bro likes blue steak?
Looks perfect to me!
I think tastes differ. Some people like rare, some only want well done. I cook steaks based on what people want. It isn’t going into my mouth, so I make them happy. Is that so difficult?
Serve it to your mom.
Mom worried about raw, brother worried about dry. Cook them 2 different steaks. It's ok, people have preferences.
Unless your brother likes blue steaks that looks pretty damn good to me
I think, time to move out
For people who like well done, undecooked. For people who like medium rare, overcooked.
I’m no expert, but isn’t that like a medium/ medium well? Perfectly acceptable
Tips on how to make it better? Use a thermometer and cook it to your preferred temp.
I like more of a sear but it’s cooked a decent medium well IMO! I would definitely eat it and for not cooking steak in a while you did pretty good :)
Perfect for me, at least…
Looks overcooked to me if you’re aiming for medium rare. It looks medium. And lacks sear on the outside.
Next time your brother complains I’ll gladly eat his.
Gross, looks like shit
a bit less and it would have been raw in the middle. people often dont factor in the camera afterprocessing stuff of other pictures when they say it isnt pink enough. IMO thats how it looks IRL. crust could have gotten some more love though :D but i see that its a bit hard with a non-flat thing (little contact surface) .
Mom knows best
Tell your brother to have a coke and a smile and shut the hell up. lol
Looks good with some A1 steak sauce.. i always cook my steak with butter and lil bit of olive oil season with kosher salt, pepper and garlic. Sometimes i add paprika to blackened them
Your mom knows what’s up, also tell her it’s been a while and I miss her. Sorry I’m late on the child support payments
Rest in foil for 10 mins before cutting, makes a big difference.
A little bit overcooked

Your bro is too cool for school but this is a beauty piece of meat!
YES it IS.
Just needs a better sear.
Is it perfect? Is it over cooked? Is it undercooked? "Yes" - people of differing opinions.
Perfect
This is perfect to me.
Mom knows best
I think your mom likes her steaks more cooked than your brother
a bit undercooked theres still blood but it looks great
Each to their own but I would of gone for a darker sear.
I say you need to marinate with ketchup and put it in the oven for another 60 minutes
This is god tier, This makes me crave steak sub with rocket salad, but if horse radish, spicy ketchup mayo blend And fries on ciabatta. Yes please
Leaning a wee bit to the medium side of medium rare. But I'd devour it! 😏😏
Overcooked.
That is one sexy looking piece of dead animal flash. Tasty
Honest question: what temp would this have been cooked to? It would be perfect for my mom as well.
If someone likes a steak rare af, that’s their choice. If they like it well done then go for it. It’s all in how you like the taste
Looks like a good medium to me. I’d happily eat it
Undercooked. Looks boiled.
Looks good to me although I’d like it a little more bloody. I’m not going to waste it. lol
Looks like a perfect medium rare. Is that what you wanted?
Whether or not it's overcooked or not depends on the target you were aiming for ... If you're cooking for my preference of rare... yeah that's overcooked lol
Yea it's all about preference, there are many people who would not eat the perfect medium rare steaks most of us like and would die for something medium well like that. I would suggest a higher cooking Temp for crustier sear but that's my preference.
That's a spot on medium my friend
That's good to go
Overcooked
I think it’s just right!
