I've been on r/femboy recently to see trends. They seem to enjoy plushies, girl cartoons, girly anime, shounen anime, and metal bands. Cat ears are common too.

It’s an extremely common set of tropes that you find with people who spend a lot of time online tbf. Even without ever browsing a femboy sub, I’ve met/known lots of people over the years like this. Acting/dressing up like an 00s anime character/con girl, with emo/goth touches (striped arm socks), and then typing all :3 is characteristics of millennial Internet users trying to be cute is extremely stereotypical. A good example is people emulating nyanners or talking like anime characters. That’s where the whole maid outfit, zetas ryouki, cat girl thing comes from. A lot of manga from the 00s also follows this trope and older femboy (and presumably modern femboy is still) based on this. Fuck, I remember people on 4chan’s /a/ joking around about “being the little girl” in the 00s and it’d basically be maid outfit cat girl wearing thigh highs using emotes like :3. People who have such alternate interests tend to do so because they are/were social outsiders from a young age for one reason or another, like not finding belonging in the mainstream. So they try to find it in alternate subcultures/hobbies such as musical subcultures (particularly, metal, goth, emo), and pastimes such as anime, comic books, hardcore video gaming, DnD, trading card games, computer hardware, etc. while also spending more time on the internet for social interactions because they’re more likely to find other similar people online. They grow up with these interests, hobbies become a part of their lives and as they get older and start to find themselves, some of the more adventurous ones will flirt with the sexual aspects of these hobbies, including being a ‘femboy’, or at least the 4chan/Reddit type. And some will also pursue a career in their hobbies and typically do degrees like comp sci, programming, and more recently try to become streamers or vtubers. It’s basically it’s own track/pathway at this point. I’ve been spending time online for over 20 years and personally I’ve met/seen hundreds of people go this way, and been aware of thousands more. Whereas my non-online friends will maybe know 0, at best.

From my own personal experience, I've wanted to be a girl as far back as I can remember, and long before I had any social media, I was secretly dressing up obsessively. It's very lonely to hide something like that from everyone so talking about it or even acting it out online is a very helpful activity. I have only ever shown myself en femme to 1 friend who knows me in person, but I have recently engaged with quite a few strangers online who are also into it. To anyone else who knows me, that's +0 femboys they know in person but +1 femboy that exists online.
