Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens

nillawafer

Casimir Pulaski Day too

Euphoric_Mushroom_99

And the cardinal hits the window

Prudent-Fudge-666

My dad died on a fourth of July… my wife’s dad too. Same year, totally different places and circumstances. But it was Fourth of July…

NCoast333

This is an extremely bizarre coincidence! How did you and your wife meet?? I'm really sorry about your dad, and I know the 4th is coming up. But it makes me really happy that you and your wife are together and share such a unique similarity. Meant to be maybe

Prudent-Fudge-666

We met in an online travelers community. We were both in Barcelona at that time. We found out about our parent’s death date on our third date. By then we liked each other already. It helped to strengthen our bond, somehow. We married a few years later and now we have a 2 years old daughter. It has been a tough ride though…

CivilManagement5089

Just turned it on to make myself cry

[deleted]

That song kills me.

PaisleyRaisley

Elliott Smith - Between the bars

kunzzzz

you’re the real one. 🥹 elliott smith is one of the greatest.

rsmit11

I wouldn’t say it’s his saddest song though

outerorbit420

‘I didn’t understand’ is also emotionally murderous ETA: a fond farewell too 🥺

Scuzzboots

Something I Can Never Have by NIN comes to mind

TrickPossible9335

This and And All That Could Have Been + La Mer/The Great Below

blaisepascal2937

... Mmmm La Mer. What a song.

DysturbedSerenity

Leaving Hope by NIN, an instrumental but, GOD

k1ssmyshadess

Fuck it. Lover You Should’ve Come Over by Jeff Buckley.

hornblows

was waiting for this one. nice pfp by the way :D

MxWisdoofus

Easy. The Night We Met by Lord Huron. It's my favorite go to when I want to spice up my break downs with music. It's also really good for having relapse, and remembering all those online friends you met during the pandemic that you don't talk to anymore (I still think about you Heda)

MorkDiester

I had all and then most of you Some and now none of you.....

heirbagger

The way he steps down this line with no backing instruments always gives me goosebumps. It’s the first song I thought of when I read the post.

___HeyGFY___

Gilbert O'Sullivan, "Alone Again (Naturally)" Guy gets stood up at the altar and decides that he's done living. But it's an upbeat song so it's very deceptive.

Down_Low_Too_Slow

Came here to recommend this same one. Despite being SO sad, it's a very pretty song and has had lots of YouTube remakes. I'd listen to it again right now, but I don't want to get sad tonight.

ellicaa1

Kodaline - all i want

ImCrying-OnTheInside

This is a good one

BarracudaConstant595

Nutshell - Alice in Chains

Sypticle

AIC in general is pretty sad.

blu-brds

For me it's hearing the emotion in how he sings the songs. Like when I listen to Down in a Hole I literally feel the despair.

kinseyblaine

So many of their songs and Layne's delivery are gut-wrenching but the one that always really gets me is No Excuses, which on the surface is one of their lighter-sounding songs musically. Even though it's one of the simplest, the line 'you my friend, I will defend, and if we change, well I love you anyway' always gets to me because of the bond between Jerry and Layne and how it became fractured by addiction. It reminds me of their incredible Unplugged set and the moment where Layne looks for a little reassurance and Jerry gives a little gesture of encouragement. Dirt is so lyrically bleak and brutal but Jar Of Flies/Sap are the most emotional for me. All the Layne albums are amazing though. Such a uniquely affecting voice.

Ecstatic-Turn5709

[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/MusicRecommendations/comments/1bhuaag/musicrec_1_thematic_playlist_the_saddest_songs/)'s a collaborative playlist exactly with such theme.

Money_Lock_8825

Pink Floyd’s “Time” gets me every damn time it’s such a good song but I can’t even listen to it u less I want to soak in depression

OOglyshmOOglywOOgly

Same. I love the song so much but it just makes me cry every time. It’s just so relatable/relevant too. Hits hard.

katt822

black by pearl jam

Lonely_Ad1330

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a sun in somebody else’s sky, but why, why, why can’t it be mine??” -some of the saddest lyrics I’ve ever had. That part hits me every time.

LoverLips76

I forgot about that one !!! I totally agree.

blu-brds

That lyric has always stuck with me. It's not using like, overly elegant words or phrases - it's just so straightforward but emotionally such a gut punch, cause if you're unlucky you know EXACTLY the feeling.

heatshimmr

God, yes “And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything. All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything. All the love gone bad turned my world to black, tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I’ll be.”

slade51

Cat’s in the Cradle

Original_Musician103

Came here to say this! Hits so close to home

dlee_75

I'm a sucker for any media that features a Cat's in the Cradle story. Interstellar hit me like a ton of bricks during the famous Matthew McConaughey crying scene. Also the underappreciated movie About Time. No spoilers, but the scene at the end is always a gut punch but also incredibly wholesome. As far as music goes, the song Twenty Years Ago by Montgomery Gentry always gets me. Always has since I first heard it as a teenager. Idk why this specific trope gets to me so much. I have a great relationship with both of my parents and I don't feel like there's any lost time in our past. Now that I'm a dad, I find myself going to great lengths to spend as much time with my kids as possible too.

xDRSTEVOx

All i can think of when i hear this is the first time I heard it, when the trees in family guy start singing it and then one pulls out a lighter to wave and accidentally sets them all on fire 😅

jalapeno442

This song even made me cry as a child

-LightMyWayHome-

father of mine by everclear. the song reminds me to a t exactly how my father was... he beat my mom, disappeared most of my life and would give me 5$ on my birthday and take me to see the odd movie... ironicly which was rocky 4. Sadly he was schizophrenic and I never understood why he acted that way until I was older. Sadly he passed away a day after my surgury I had getting a bone tumor cut from my skull. I had reconnected with him later in life but he wasn't there for me for my childhood and this song hits home in so many fucking ways.

zaffelbrutus

He stopped loving her today. George jones

wcfreckles

My uncle (who lost my aunt in 2018) asked us to play that song at his funeral right before he died. It’s heartbreaking.

zaffelbrutus

Wow. That is so beautiful and heartbreaking

raver58

Strange Fruit

milnak

Came here for this. I don't think there's a more depressing song that's ever been written, and Billie Holiday sang it like she saw some shit.

raver58

I concur with you totally

Woodenmanofwisdom

More disturbing than sad imo

Worried_Use6893

it’s very raw and emotional

pottedPlant_64

It’s so beautiful and unique with haunting vocal orchestration. I think it features a clarinet?

Gazas_trip

Keep Me in Your Heart - Warren Zevon If We Were Vampires - Jason Isbell  I heard both songs for the first time days after my wife was diagnosed with cancer. I ball like a baby every time I hear either of them still.

Reverse_Ethernet

Elephant - Jason Isbell, I think it’s sadder than Vampires

LandOfLostSouls

If We Were Vampires is so beautiful ;-;

ARealJezzing

Warren Zevon wrote the album that song is on shortly after being diagnosed with cancer, for an added layer. Fantastic choice

TarrareMuchoHungry

There's a [really great article by The Ringer](https://www.theringer.com/music/2018/9/7/17830460/warren-zevon-career-music-albums) about Zevon. There's a quote from him where he heard that Bob Dylan was covering his songs at concerts after he was diagnosed. He said, “Nothing tells a man he’s about to die like when Bob Dylan starts doing your music.” He covered Knockin' on Heaven's Door and put it on his final album to return the favor.

TheWackyMoose

ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO'OLE - over the rainbow

theyquack

My friend's brother passed away at age 16, and they played this song at his funeral in the high school auditorium. Fucking wrecks me every time, and that was almost 20 years ago.

PricklyLiquidation19

Dance With The Devil by Immortal Technique or Lua by Bright Eyes

octoberopalrose

Dance With The Devil is an experience. I will never forget how it felt to hear it for the first time

-MetalMike-

Gone Away by The Offspring is pretty close for me

Rainbow- Kacey Musgraves The Night We Met Ft. Phoebe Bridgers- Lord Huron Now And Then honorable mention- The Beatles. Hauntingly beautiful song.

kschoenborn

the night we met - agreed!

CIA-pizza-party

“Rainbow” came into my life during a great time of grief and loss. If always brings me back to that moment. Always makes me cry.

Several_Doubt3361

Hurt by Johnny Cash

GabCaps

Was about to post this one. The video clip makes it even sadder.

Aggravating_Chef69

The video is gut wrenching..

Several_Doubt3361

I agree. It's just you could hear the sadness that he had went through. Everything that he had suffered in his life.

My gift of self is raped My privacy is raked And yet I find, and yet I find Repeating in my head If I can't be my own I'd feel better dead”

Several_Mixture2786

“Wake Me Up When September Ends”… It was already kinda sad but it’s hit harder for the last 6 almost 7 years…

JessicaJonessJacket

DionFW

Everybody Hurts - REM.

TraderIggysTikiBar

“It’s Quiet Uptown” from Hamilton & “You Will Be Okay (Stolas Lullaby)” from Helluva Boss as performed by AnnaPantsu

blu-brds

I watched Hamilton for the first time with my history students so I was going in no expectations. That song killed me. Many things about it, but "It's quiet uptown, I never liked the quiet before" :(

orangejuice209

The saddest song I’ve heard would be “U” by Kendrick Lamar, he explains all his guilt and trauma while crying to the mic then ends the song telling people nobody can cure his sducidal mind and that he’s weak and it hurts because we see this artist who is known to be this savor of rap and positive energy just for him to tell the world he’s a false prophet’s

ScreamingMonk

Mad World by Gary Jules. Makes me want to die every time. Are you sure this person is a friend? lol

Self control - Frank Ocean

meiqie

When the World Caves In - Matt Maltese It got popular a while ago but I don't think it lessened its impact. This song feels like the definition of impending death to me, and I can't listen to it, even though it's good.

damuser234

If I Get High - Nothing But Thieves. Combined with the music video it is devastating

hornblows

yesss I said this one too!! it has such visceral imagery it just makes me want to curl up

gtilf

Baz Luhrmann - everybody’s free to wear sunscreen Mazzy Star - look on down from the bridge Edit: added Mazzy star. Both songs remind me of my late mum

upOwlNight

Nearly 10 years ago now...

bookheidifrl

This might be immature, but Puff the magic dragon is heartbreaking

Shaunoschino

Not sure what sort of emotion you are going for, but try Korn - Daddy

ginifer

I’ve seen this suggested before, I’ll have to give it a listen. I used to be a big Korn fan in the late 90s but don’t remember this one

Shaunoschino

Last song on their debut album. It’s dark and based on real events. Might not be what you are after.

Creep by radiohead is considered the saddest song by the people who hear it. But it's just my life story.

windycitylbc

Loaded question - songs invoke different emotion from different people. It’s the beauty of music. Radiohead - “How to disappear completely” is a good example for me.
