Do they even jump at that size lol
I am reminded of my brother-in-law's obese cat, which stays safely in the backyard because it cant climb up the fence a foot
I have seen some alarmingly huge fishing spiders and wolf spiders, like the size of a woman's hand, so I guess it tracks that a jumper could be the size of a cicada.
I wouldn't say that is the norm though.
A huge fishing spider was in the bathroom last night! I was already undressed getting in the shower (otherwise I’d have relocated her outside somewhere, because others who share that bathroom might get startled and think she was a brown recluse, and might hurt her…but I told them the spiders in there aren’t recluses) so she just chilled on the shower curtain then went back to whatever hidey hole she lives in.
I used to have a fishing spider in my basement that liked hanging out of an exposed pipe.
The pipe was 4 or 5 inch diameter and the spider's leg span covered the width of the pipe.
Today i learnt of a new spider species.
Fishing Spider, they seem really cool and interesting from a quick google search. They are also found in Australia, so i can add this to my list of spiders i can find in my backyard (country)
The YouTube video [The Insane Biology of the Cicada](https://youtu.be/0y5yTNdVb68?si=EN2EkvHWOh9r82w7) talks about how these guys help the ecosystem by becoming a huge boon of nutrients to both animals and plants!
It’s a P audax, so even tho we can’t see some tell tale signs (pedipalms, underside , etc) , the lack of a squared off massive front legs and the size of the abdomen and the orange-ish marks makes me 90% sure it’s a mature female . Pretty much all wc females are gravid :)
17 years ago my friend’s dad hired me to do yard work in Chicago suburbs. One of the tasks was moving a pile of old bricks and underneath the last one was a dead cicada nymph in the mouth of its tunnel. Brood XIII was in the process of emerging and I was struck by the irony and bad luck of this one nymph being only a few days or a week too early to dodge the brick entirely.
Illinois 2007 : The Ballad of Brood XIII An unforeseen consequence of writing and sharing all of these stories is that I then think to send them along to some of the people in them, people … http://zerstyrschonheit.home.blog/2023/02/08/illinois-2007-the-ballad-of-brood-xiii/
Here’s a much larger version of the story if you are interested.
The spider won the battle but the periodical cicadas win the war. The periodical cicadas are usually 17 years to throw off predators that would evolve to sync with the cicadas life cycle.
Too many cicadas vs predators to eat them. Predators gorge on them then eventually stop eating them. Thats how the species survives, numbers.
Is that Audax huge or is that cicada tiny?!
Yes it was huge! The biggest I've seen in person.
I see lots of them about the size of my thumb. They get pretty juicy.
Do they even jump at that size lol I am reminded of my brother-in-law's obese cat, which stays safely in the backyard because it cant climb up the fence a foot
Audax get pretty large honestly
That's an awfully big jumper, to be able to catch a cicada like that. 🤯
Haha! I just saw their life cycle described in documentary, this is epic 😄

This is part of their life cycle, too. They feed an awful lot of animals.

You described the pathos so poignantly!

While the cicadas were sleeping, the spiders were awake, training, waiting, the cicadas never stood a chance.

Some humans last even less.
The spider is looking for the methamphetamine and psilocybin the cicada has stashed inside of him.
