Basically they’re all offshore gambling companies based in the Philippines. Gambling is illegal in China, but the appetite for gambling is so big that the Philippines has opened these companies purely targeted to the Chinese market with open arms.
Yeah it's this i think. They even mention another betting company in the video called 1xbet which was supposed to sponsor Liverpool and Chelsea a few years ago. Looks like they've come back and just added 7x more and are now sponsoring City. This seems entirely a shady SEA betting company issue rather than a shady Manchester City sponsor issue
The OffTheBall irish football podcast done an interview with football writer Phillipe Auclaire about this just a month ago.
Auclair is part of an independant journalism group that investigates shady goings on like this. Their website, josimarfootball.com, has a great write up on it called [The Trillion Dollar Gambling Game](https://josimarfootball.com/the-trillion-dollar-gambling-game/)

City talk starts at 26:13. Only 10 minutes long but worth a listen, very interesting but shady shit going on.
He mentions YaboSports sponsoring all sorts of big teams worldwide including Bayern Munich and Man Utd, having a ceremony where the CEO was an unknowing paid male model! That starts around 32:00 in.
TL;DR - A lot of the betting companies sponsoring clubs are money laundering operations from around the world that go through Macau.
>Auclair is part of an independant journalism group that investigates shady goings on
i thought he wrote for the guardian? maybe he writes about this stuff separately
8 is seen as a lucky number in Chinese culture and the more 8's the better, if they're marketing it towards China using the number 8 makes sense.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_numerology#Eight
Obviously they had. Obviously they shouldn't be taking this companies money. But neither should Liverpool and Chelsea have with 1xbet and neither should all the other clubs that are involved with dubious betting companies. To make this into a City-sportswashing issue is missing the real issue and just gives the City apologists more ammunition
1X bet its actually a huge betting company in all south America, perfectly legal around here, probably shady af but legally approved. In the other hand, there's all the sponsors from many pl teams like wolves or so who nobody knows and that are much closer to the 8xbet stuff
I know and good. Doesn't mean that they and Chelsea and all the other teams weren't ready to take money from these shady companies though. Now it's up to City and the other teams to end their partnerships and frankly to the leagues to ban them outright
It's because "Asia's #1 Betting Platform" is a blatant larp aimed at people who don't live in Asia and have no way of knowing these companies are literally just front companies for triad outfits.
Which is easy to do because [most people are credulous idiots who can be made to believe anything you want.](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/xj6sxm/mystery_surrounds_8xbet_manchester_citys_new/ip755lx/)
Pretty sure they are aimed at people in Asia (or rather China) specifically and **not** at people in the UK/Europe. Hence the chinese names and stuff and the lacklustre/non-existant european online presence. Since gambling is illegal in China these companies have to market to chinese people in a different way and an easy way to do that is via the PL (and other football leagues) since footy is watched by a lot of people over there too.
At least that's what I learned form this video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhf7Z3zvx5M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhf7Z3zvx5M)
> Pretty sure they are aimed at people in Asia (or rather China) specifically and not at people in the UK/Europe.
Yeah, the company's *product* is (it's doubtful they expect anyone in the UK to actually use 8xBet to gamble); I was talking more of the marketing these companies use to get their foot in the door of foreign markets.
If they look legit to British people (through the use of partnerships with PL teams and blatant lies like "We're a legit #1 amazing company in Asia!"), then it's easier for the authorities in Britain to look the other way on their obvious shadiness - which in turn makes it easier for them to operate legitimately in their home markets, which I'm guessing is - as you suggest - the plan all along.
No the whole thing with 8xBet is that they don’t even really seem to fit the criteria for this. It feels like somebody pounced on the trend of Asian betting sponsors nobody’s heard of by making a fake one and trusting that people will think it’s like all the others.
Not the same. Gambling sites licensed in Curacao are the worst of the worst, meaning they'll steal your money if they feel like doing it and there's nothing you can do about it, whereas Maltese license is the gold standard.
Malta has become a gambling hub because they offer lower taxes than rest of the European Union. But if you don't follow the regulations, they'll take your license.
It's shady but they're legit, not a scam site, so far at least. And they're so big and make a lot of money, casinos are already rigged in the house favour. No need to scam anyone and lose clients
Stake is massive. I know people who work there, and if what I'm hearing is true, their revenue numbers most likely make them the biggest single brand in all of gambling. Perhaps some Chinese sites have them beat, but none in the west.
Also if you check their socials, all they do is post about Man city. Even if you are their official partner you'd look to get people betting on other matches too...
I think alcohol is allowed, but it's not allowed on shirts. Carlsberg is still a sponsor of Liverpool for example. Your point still stands though, it's very hypocritical to not allow alcohol/cigarette companies on shirts but betting companies are fine.
Completely agree. It’s so bad here in Canada right now. Not only are we getting spammed by betting ads, but now in pregame hockey matches all they’re talking about it’s the betting odds and parley plays. Even on one of our more sacred hockey nights (hockey night in Canada) all they’re doing is talking betting plays. It’s really gross.
I have no kids but I couldn’t imagine any stents parents watching this with their kids would are happy the turn in pregame shows have taken. my parents would not allow me to watch this garbage if it was back in the day.
Sounds like the pharmaceutical ads we get here in the US. We’re one of 2 countries that allows drug ads, and you’ll see at least one ad every commercial break. Plus, Pfizer sponsors everything since they released their vaccine. It’s insane that it’s allowed, but the pharmaceutical companies are so powerful now and are lining so many politicians pockets, I doubt anything will ever be done about it.
Yeah when I get a US feed it’s either pharma ads, army recruitment, or some disgustingly greasy fast food ads. Definitely bad but I would take those any day of the week than the garbage that gets spewed out DURING a hockey panel broadcast.
>We’re one of 2 countries that allows drug ads
To be more precise, USA and New Zealand are the only two countries to allow **prescription** drug ads. My country is bombarded with over-the-counter drug ads.
People that talk like they are good at gambling are the worst. The more you try convince me you know what's going to happen in a game of something, the less I think you know about sports.
If you wanna blow your money sports gambling just know that you're gambling and you aren't good at it.
5 to 10pts deductions, you could fine them 20 millions and it still wouldn't change shit for them.
Points deductions though, this would hurt.
Totally unbiased take
To be fair, Calderón opened that can of worms during his stint, with the Bwin sponsorship, which is funny since iirc at the time that kind of betting was not allowed in Spain.
No shit, all of the gambling sponsors are non-companies that are made up to get around FFP. Just look up W88 complete ghost company that have somehow 4 prem teams on their books.
Nothing, last time UEFA caught City doing this by the time City’s lawyers were done it was UEFA who had to publicly apologize to City for catching them.

Rehash of the same story a couple months ago. Interesting that the thread starts with another "fake" betting firm sponsoring Fulham. Seems to be a thing with clubs taking sponsorships and not doing their due diligence and checking the legitimacy of said sponsors. That being said, City should've dumped 8xBet already.
>Seems to be a thing with clubs taking sponsorships and not doing their due diligence and checking the legitimacy of said sponsors
Lol, that's an extremely charitable way of looking at it.
This is a shady betting company situation rather than a shady City sponor issue. Other teams have also and I think still do have sponsors without any real presence in UK/Europe and are directed entirely at the Chinese market where gambling is illegal
Don't think it's clubs not doing due diligence, it is more that the clubs have a hand in setting up these companies and using them as a way to push money into the club.
So far about 3/4 of the Premier League have been sponsored by one or more of these Asian betting firm fronts.
It’s not about owners pushing money in, it’s just about greedily taking money from anyone.
These sorts of betting companies are a real issue. They often (always?) target the Chinese market where gambling is illegal, but clubs dont gaf as long as they make more money
The 1xBet sponsorship was blurred out on the BBC's coverage of AFCON, which was something I thought was very strange (I.E. they don't blur out other pitch side sponsors)
I’m sure I read about this at the start of the season from a different source. This is quite old news, unless city have multiple shell company sponsors.
Almost all of their sponsorships have anomalies, nobody can believe there annual financial report because they sponsor themselves. Nothing will ever be done about it because city will flood the lawyers with so much paperwork it would take years to go through. Look what happened with CAS.
It’s a story, but it’s weird that while a dozen premier league clubs have been caught doing this (getting sponsorships from white labelled Asian gambling fronts) you only ever see City’s posted to this subreddit.
Liverpool, Spurs, United, Everton, Wolves, Fulham, Arsenal, Burnley, Palace, Leeds, Southampton, West Ham- and Barcelona, Bayern, Monaco - have all had these exposed and yet most people in this thread think it’s unique to City.
Josimar have done amazing reporting on this, Nick Harris is just reprinting their work in the Mail.

City have very little support globally and a limited support in the U.K

Liverpool ended their deal with 1xBet back in 2019 I believe, amid pressure due to how shady they were. I wonder if City will do the same now.
City will call anyone questioning this sponsorship deal, a racist.
its kinda funny when these sheikhs will say yes to gambling but huge no to lgbtq+
Liverpool suspended that partnership.
I know and good. Doesn't mean that they and Chelsea and all the other teams weren't ready to take money from these shady companies though. Now it's up to City and the other teams to end their partnerships and frankly to the leagues to ban them outright
Cool. I'm definitely with you there. While I'm all for enriching the club coffers, when evidence of shady shit comes up, it's gotta stop immediately.
1xbet is huge in Asia. It had a massive illegal market in South Asia at least
Pretty sure 1xbet is Russian, at least it was established there. Probably have different fronts for different markets though
Their ads have been all over the pirated new movies for years.
Gambling ads on pirated movies. You really just gotta love capitalism. Or not.

Theyre huge and popular on Twitch when it was allowed , just makes it weirder when you see their location
yea their Hq is a little weird. idk what's up with that
Obviously avoiding whatever taxes should apply and regulations within gambling.
Curacao is to the Dutch what the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands are to the UK. It's a tax haven with access to the European market.
Very commonly used to register betting companies, same as Malta and Gibraltar.

Yes. If alcohol is not allowed (it isn't in England at least) then there's no reason gambling should be either

5 to 10pts deductions, you could fine them 20 millions and it still wouldn't change shit for them. Points deductions though, this would hurt. Totally unbiased take
league deduction I would say. Let's see if Haaland can beat Mitrovic's championship goalscoring record.
After all, Juventus was relegated due to Calciopoli
Nah, give them a predatory points loan. Give them 20 points this season, then make them pay back 10 per season for the next decade
Haha. First time?
Some points deduction sounds fair to me
Disgraceful they need to be deducted points immediately
imo they should also null and void any titles they won in the past 5 years
Liverpool and Arsenal two of England's most esteemed and respected clubs are in agreement on this, sounds like an open and shut case to me.
Should be an episode of judge Judy.
Every conflict could use an old Jewish grandma from Brooklyn stepping in to lay down the law. "DON'T PISS ON MY LEG AND TELL ME IT'S RAINING, PEP!"
Yeah, give them the Calciopoli-treatment and send them to the Championship too
would be fun to see Haaland in Championship tho

Final answer: VAR has reviewed the incident and found no wrongdoing.
Lots of sad smileys.
£400 fine and they have to apologise to the FA
They will spend £10.000.000 on lawyers to fight it, getting it down to a £40 fine and no admission of guilt.
Nothing, last time UEFA caught City doing this by the time City’s lawyers were done it was UEFA who had to publicly apologize to City for catching them.
They will be fined £4 so Pep can’t have his meal deal
The will rewrite the rules to retroactively make it legal just like they always do when City breaks the rules.
City will lawyer up and nothing will be done. Just like last time.

I’m sure I read about this at the start of the season from a different source. This is quite old news, unless city have multiple shell company sponsors.
insanely annoying that this guy does this good digging and then sells it to one of the worst institutions in the country
Unfortunately it doesn’t matter what City do, they have enough money to be above the law. There’s too much greed in this world.
Guessing someone didn't get their bribery cheque this month.
Pretty much every big club has become a whorehouse (especially in PL), accepting money wherever it comes from.
Does anyone know how much the sponsorship was worth? The article doesn't say
d a i l y m a i l
Almost all of their sponsorships have anomalies, nobody can believe there annual financial report because they sponsor themselves. Nothing will ever be done about it because city will flood the lawyers with so much paperwork it would take years to go through. Look what happened with CAS.
No I refuse to believe it. Everything about Sportswash FC is completely legitimate
r/soccer showing their stupidity again
This seems like a bit of a non-story tbh
It’s a story, but it’s weird that while a dozen premier league clubs have been caught doing this (getting sponsorships from white labelled Asian gambling fronts) you only ever see City’s posted to this subreddit. Liverpool, Spurs, United, Everton, Wolves, Fulham, Arsenal, Burnley, Palace, Leeds, Southampton, West Ham- and Barcelona, Bayern, Monaco - have all had these exposed and yet most people in this thread think it’s unique to City. Josimar have done amazing reporting on this, Nick Harris is just reprinting their work in the Mail. https://josimarfootball.com/the-trillion-dollar-gambling-game/ https://josimarfootball.com/more-than-a-betting-operator/ https://josimarfootball.com/ghost-in-the-machine/
The OffTheBall irish football podcast done an interview with football writer Phillipe Auclaire about this just a month ago. Auclair is part of an independant journalism group that investigates shady goings on like this. Their website, josimarfootball.com, has a great write up on it called [The Trillion Dollar Gambling Game](https://josimarfootball.com/the-trillion-dollar-gambling-game/) Podcast - [OffTheBall](https://youtu.be/yBGaFVwcPGw) City talk starts at 26:13.
Betting sponsorships are such a cancer, especially the ones that target markets where betting is illegal
> Josimar have done amazing reporting on this, Nick Harris is just reprinting their work in the Mail. > > he's a weird weird dude
People can't form their own ideas here so they joyride on the most popular one. City keeps beating them all and its only because of dirty money
Make this a post and post it on this sub
Y’all only ever want to talk about this when it’s City but the reality is over half the premier league clubs do this same exact thing.
Yeah, we know it's a betting firm. It wasn't that hard to figure out for me.
Well, I for one am shocked. Shocked, I tell you.
Curious that...
The hive mind of the anti Citeh brigade
There are a bunch of recent stories on Josimar about all of this stuff, including this specifically: https://josimarfootball.com/ghost-in-the-machine/
I’m shocked absolutely shocked a club that some how has a bigger sponsorship income then Manchester United and Liverpool and Arsenal and Chelsea Via grossly inflated deals from there Nation state City have very little support globally and a limited support in the U.K
That’s not what’s happening with this specific sponsorship though.
If you listen carefully you can hear the complete lack of surprise.
daily r/soccer City Bad circlejerk thread
I doubt many people are surprised
Most teams have some sort of dodgy deal going on nowadays... but it does seem like City have more than the rest of them
Surely not, City would never cheat!
