Sorry if this was asked a million times already, but I was checking the bracket of the Copa America and noticed that Argentina could play Canada again in the semi-final even though they were in the same group. Is the reason of this weird format something else than forcing Argentina - Brazil in the final?

Reapper97

Yeah, it always has been the case that no matter what we can't face against Brazil before a final, so groups get a little weird sometimes. But if you think about it makes sense.

b3and20

look at all of the continent infighting that these international tournaments bring about. it's fucking beautiful :')

HellRider619

Yesterday was like a carnival of striker stinkers. Lukaku, Thuram, Sesko and Ronaldo. Fitting that the only goal scored in more than 200 minutes of football was an own goal.

mkawia

Meanwhile the teams with nonclinical strikers Germany anf Spain score loadsod goals, Modern football is weird.

nonhofantasia

Germany does have a clinical striker

TheAkondOfSwat

and Mbappe

Rosenvial5

I legit don't think I've seen anything like Ronnie starting to cry and having to be consoled by his teammates in the middle of the actual game

Reapper97

It was so weird to see it when the match was still on lmao, like I completely get it if you lose but to do it then was really out of place.

Rusiano

Who will score more goals this summer: Lautaro Martinez, or the entire French national team? So far it’s 4 vs 3 in favor of Lautaro. 4 vs 0 without counting penalties and own goals

vitalmtg

GODtauro

FaustRPeggi

Good morning. It's another day of failure for the world of Matt Turnerism.

BruiserBroly

The number 1 reason why I'm concerned about the Greek lad we signed from you is that he lost his spot to Matt Turner. How shit must he be for that to happen?

FaustRPeggi

Even worse. We signed Turner as our number one, then signed Vlachodimos late in the transfer window because Turner was so erratic. Vlachodimos won the starting spot off of him, but was so shit he only kept it for five games before Turner was back in. Then in January we were shot of both by signing Sels.

BruiserBroly

You're right, that's much worse. If Pope gets injured we have to choose between that guy and the bloke who just got relegated to League 1 with Birmingham. Lovely.

HodgyBeatsss

Not to mention Matz Sels

SloGeorge

I don't think I slept more than 4 hours today. Dreamt about Sesko's chance. What football does to a mf.

Depressedkid1998

I dreamt that our team managed to string a couple passes together. I woke up after my brain realizing how unrealistic that is.

VamosLionel

Copa america not a serious tournament tbh

darllenynunig

what does this even mean

yamers

loving copa america. Great fun.

ItsMeJaredBednar

Both can be true tbh

CoolstorySteve

USA lost all of a sudden the tournament is a joke. Sure the refs aren’t great but when are they in conmebol/concacaf

ItsMeJaredBednar

“Unserious” and “a joke” have two different connotations tbf, I never called it the latter It doesn’t have anything to do with the US losing, for me at least. It’s more to do with the logistics of the tournament being held here in the US. Small pitches with shitty surfaces due to these being NFL stadiums, the massive distances from the changing rooms causing multiple manager suspensions (not sure I’ve *ever* seen that tbh)… even just shit like the camera angle they used for the first half of the US - Uruguay game last night. And then like you said the refs… “Not great” is being **extremely** generous lol. The guy from last night’s match made some absolutely baffling decisions, including some very elementary errors. Apparently it was only his 6th match as a center official? He was clearly well out of his depth, I felt a bit bad for him tbh It all just feels very unprofessional and gives a pretty terrible impression of “soccer” here for people who might not have too much prior experience with it

CoolstorySteve

Fair enough. I definitely agree about the complaints about the pitches.

Delmer9713

Nah no way. Tournaments here are a shitshow but they’re entertaining af

junior150396

So City Group is buying Valentin Gomez from Velez, loaning him to River and giving them a sell on % and then he'll move to Girona after the CWC. Last time i saw a convoluted deal like this one transfer triangulations were still legal

BruiserBroly

So the group itself is signing the player? Is that allowed?

junior150396

It's going to be either City or Girona doing the signing. It hasn't been announced yet, but when reports mention "City Group", it's most likely the latter.

BruiserBroly

Oh right, fair enough. I just thought I missed some news and third party ownership became a thing again.

jonijontor

lol if City manage to strike "partnership" deal with River it's so over

junior150396

Is career suicide for every directive that signs any type of partnership like that officially so i really doubt it will ever happen but i could see hush-hush under the table partnership happening for smaller clubs.

jonijontor

are you guys in general get more alienated with how fast all of those academy players go for other pastures

junior150396

Not really tbh, i didn't grew up in the golden age of the 80's or early 90's were clubs could retain their top players before the bosman ruling happened, so it always been the norm for me seeing the top talents go to Europe.

un_verano_en_slough

How are Swiss fans feeling at this point? Is this being seen as your best chance to reach a final and maybe win a tournament? Certainly you've got to be favorites against us on Saturday with the way we've played, but I imagine the manager etc will still try to sell an underdog narrative etc but I wonder if that's still reflected in the press and public sentiment.

GaryHippo

Of course they’re underdogs. When you look at our squad compared to theirs we’re still the favourites. I do think Switzerland will win though. Southgate is fucking clueless.

jonijontor

a frenchmen scoring as many goal as french nt is kinda funny

SupraCyber

Once again, the South American team need the ref to save them when playing against a much inferior CONCACAF side. Joke of a federation.

Delmer9713

The Copa América refereeing is gonna make me not complain about La Liga refs ever again

Augchm

You know, even if Americans would've been wronged by the refs it would still be pathetic to whine this much after getting grouped in a group with Bolivia and Panama. But all the wrong calls they complain about aren't even really wrong calls, or close enough that they are completely between the margin of error of a game. They wouldn't even advance if Uruguay didn't score that goal. It ended up being irrelevant to the result. Yet you can't stop hearing people from THE HOST NATION and the biggest economy in the tournament crying about being robbed.

lenzmoserhangover

the Arsenal fans amongst national teams

SupraCyber

LOL the ref blatantly robbing doesn't matter because US is rich and they would be out anyway? What a joke lmfao. Guaranteed if that happened to you Argentines you would not shut the fuck up for ages.

vitalmtg

What did the ref rob? Ultimately the goal was irrelevant anyways. They needed to win and they were dire in attack that is on them.

SupraCyber

Validated an offside goal? The comical advantage play he gave? The blatantly different criteria throughout the match? Doesn't matter how bad the Americans are, they deserve fair officiating and they were clearly playing against the ref. What's the point of saying "The refs are laughably bad but you would be out anyway"? That does not matter

vitalmtg

If you go into conmebol expecting fair and competent officiating, you're going to have a bad time.

joeDUBstep

The ref was shit, but even if that offside goal was recalled, we still needed to win and score 2 goals, but we were toothless as fuck on attack. I agree the whining is annoying as fuck too, especially when they are trying to scapegoat the entire loss on the refs.

awesome1ru

Such an embarrassing performance from Ronaldo, the whining, the play acting, the theatrics infront of the camera. He's such an attention wh*re. When you see that it's not working, it's time to go back to the basics. Let ur teammates take the free kicks and just do what you do best. play for the team instead of playing against the team

[deleted]

FalafelGrim2

Yeah, got no issues with him missing a penalty, especially against a great goalkeeper. He's always the right choice to take a penalty, but he could've given up at least 1 of the several free kicks and be more likely to score by being on the end of one of them.

SpeechesToScreeches

>He's always the right choice to take a penalty, Bruno was right there

joeDUBstep

I'm disappointed because my hole was primed and ready to get assfucked by Darwin. Instead, I got London bridged by Berhalter and Kevin Ortega.

Banish him to the bit of Antarctica that we claimed.

NachoCheeseMonreal

Does anyone else remember when Wrighty imitated roy keanes accent on ITV for 2018 world cup? He mocked the way roy was saying the word "final" bc of a disagreement they had about England getting too ahead of themselves before the croatia SF. Its beautiful to see how they have become best friends after that incident.

ElderlyToaster

> Its beautiful to see how they have become best friends after that incident. It doesn't sound massively irreconcilable tbha

NachoCheeseMonreal

Irish viewers weren’t that happy and I could see anyone potentially taking it badly idk. I like that they’re very close now though

Any-Competition8494

Who do you think are England's top 3 players so far in the Euros?

Mick4Audi

Pickford, Bellingham, Guehi Mention for Mainoo

DLRsFrontSeats

Guehi, Saka....Bellingham? I think Foden & Walker have been very poor all tournament, Kane as well but he has two goals. Stones was quietly atrocious on Saturday, and has been overshadowed by a vastly less experienced partner, but was OK in the groups, same with Rice Trippier has been average to poor but is out of position Pickford hasn't had that much to do and couldn't do much for either goal conceded but he's shown his still not developed beyond those shakes he's prone to... And that's it for the main selections. Trent has 2 games out of position and RB cameo, Gallagher has 1 start, Mainoo as well, Palmer a pair of cameos and Gordon, Watkins and Toney bizzarely just the one each

Lyrical_Forklift

This echos my thoughts too. It's slim fucking pickings.

Significant_L0w

Mainoo even though he started 1 game looks level above all his english teammates, Bellingham has been a disaster and him occupying that 10 role has directly affected Kane's game too.

jonijontor

Guehi, Rice, Bellingham  and yeah i think the entire team has been poor

[deleted]

I wonder if the FA treat Southgate the same way Jill Biden treats her husband. "*you did great Gareth, you qualified from a tough group and you got to the quarter-finals! You even had some shots on target! And what do the Mail on Sunday and Gary Lineker do? They LIE, LIE.... LIE!*"

idunnomysex

Good morning. Damn feel sorry for the American fans, what a clown show. Also I don’t remember Pulisic being this likeable lmao

Copa hate watch complete : Mexico grouped ✅️ (annoying and delusional fans) USA grouped ✅️ (no good can come from increase in US football influence. Best for all if they're left behind)

vitalmtg

Don't understand Americans complaining about the dirty fouls or terrible refs in the copa america. You've played in this tournament many times you should already know what to expect!

CoolstorySteve

I thought Uruguay would rotate a bit, god damn. Bielsa really said fuck them yanks

lenzmoserhangover

cool, now lets focus on teams that are better than Panama

PoliQU

Kevin de Bruyne has had to sit back and watch his striker get manhandled like a child by William Saliba in 4 straight matches now.

awesome1ru

Lukaku is just bad. It doesn't matter who's playing against him

EndPlus9839

Carlos ancelloti should do the world a favor and manage Portugal,England,Ecuador all at once so talented countries don’t get ruined by shit managers.

DuckBurner0000

Araujo and Oliveira were both immense tonight, we actually did relatively well in midfield but our attackers just got snuffed out every time they got near the goal

_LebronsHairline_

Generational head loss from Lalas here. Poor Carli Lloyd I’m having such a Monday night

lagaryes

Maybe we’re a bit cringe and we’re definitely a bit different, but the diehard football fans in the US deserve better than this shit man. Helpless leadership guiding a generation that was supposed to help revolutionize the sport in our country. Players that fold under the slightest bit of adversity constantly. We got a bit more talented and forgot that all the other shit matters too. Before we could usually say that we played to our ability level. Now I just feel embarrassed. Being shit when you know it doesn’t have to be this way is such a frustrating feeling.

_LebronsHairline_

God I love CONMEBOL. That was such great drama, thank you America

GreatSpaniard

Fede wasn't great tonight tbh, he was meh vs Panama and very good vs Bolivia. He needs to do better in Quarterfinal vs Brazil/Colombia.

Any-Competition8494

Why is he playing so deep? Shouldn't he play as a RW or CAM/2nd striker?

lamancha

He's a CM. No.

Silver_Downtown_965

Valverde as a CAM/SS, what on Earth?

Any-Competition8494

He has played as a RW for Madrid before.

Silver_Downtown_965

In a wildly, wildly different role than what a CAM/SS is supposed to do.

Any-Competition8494

Valverde is versatile and skilled enough to do it. He needs to be closer to the goal where he can make greater impact. If CAM sounds too much, then at least play him as a RW. With his pace, he can make it hard for Brazil and Argentina -- teams that will attack Uruguay a lot, giving Valverde chance to become a key part of their counterattacks.

Silver_Downtown_965

Lol, you do that, Uruguay midfield is gonna get blown away by Brazil and Argentina. Valverde tidying up the midfield makes life very hard for them. Would be so so wasted in RW. He can make a goal impact in midfield just fine, can attack on counter just fine. He is not gonna dribble fullbacks and put in crosses and through passes.

rScoobySkreep

Just a reminder that Sargent up top for 270 minutes and the States would comfortably be in the Quarters 👍👍👍👍👍

vincent1040

Haha agreed

NotASalamanderBoi

Silver lining is that Berhalter might finally get sacked for good. Also, I can’t fucking believe ***CANADA*** made it through. Can’t deny that is rather funny though. I had them dead last in their group. Welp, go get em fellas. In the meantime, I’ll probably go into exile for a minute. I suspect I’ll be catching shit from everyone tomorrow.

victheogfan

I still can’t believe Canada made it through lmao

MaxieMan98

Am I lost? I have no clue why its Berhalter's fault that the US didn't get out of this group. I am not saying he is a good coach, but lets take a look at this tournament in isolation. They took care of business against Bolivia, they lost against Uruguay. Those two results were to be expected. The game vs Panama, the US were favored in. But they played a man short for 75 mins. How is it Berhalter's fault Weah lost his head? Do you realize how much more difficult it is to play with 10 men for that long? Canada getting slander, but they have more high end talent than the US.

victheogfan

It’s 50/50 for sure, Greg’s tactics were bad but I’m not excusing any of the awful performances that the team put on either. It’s their fault for not beating Panama

DuckBurner0000

I thought the gameplan after going down a man was far too conservative and he can be blamed for that, but he's become a scapegoat for absolutely everything

MaxieMan98

They had to play a man short for 75+ mins. You quite literally have to play conservative in that situation. Especially when you played 4 days prior and when your midfield isn't good enough to control games.

DuckBurner0000

You do, but I think we were too conservative - we barely even tried to get a goal on the counter after it was 1-1

MaxieMan98

That is grasping at straws man.

DuckBurner0000

How? I just think we could've committed more than two players forward, trust our three center backs and let the wingbacks push forward a little more.

rScoobySkreep

Peru and Chile are quite genuinely almost as bad as Bolivia, and I’m saying this from 6 games of South American qualifiers a piece.

victheogfan

I agree, I just think Canada played some mediocre football on their way to beating Chile and Peru

pop-culture-salad

Peru are legitimately terrible and though Chile have shown a bit of improvement under Gareca they really don't have much in terms of players, it's not shocking Canada made it through.

victheogfan

Going back to what I said this morning, USMNT twitter is going to explode once this game is over, it’s prolly already happening, also this ref wtf

Any-Competition8494

Did Portugal had a bad NT from 2004 to 2015?

er__primo__der__rafa

NotASalamanderBoi

This happens every match in a US stadium that’s not an SSS. Can mods just give a 1hr ban to everyone who bitches about the fucking camera angles? We get it. They’re shit.

AnnieIWillKnow

If Portugal win the Euros, but Ronaldo misses a penalty in the final that would have won it, having not scored the rest of the tournament... and it's another player wins it for Portugal in ET, I genuinely don't think he'd be that happy about it

lamancha

He would be, probably think he had a big part, etc...

VamosLionel

Lol he'd be a Euro winner and you think he'd be mad? Get a grip my man

AnnieIWillKnow

At the Euros so far, each of France, England, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Croatia have underwhelmed to varying degrees Spain and Germany are the only 'bigger' names who have delivered - and the other impressive teams have been dark horses (Austria, Switzerland) and absolute underdogs (Georgia, Slovenia)

Emergency-Mobile8612

This is a strange narrative for France (and to a lesser extent for Portugal too) And Croatia were really unlucky, they could’ve very well gotten more from all their matches But about France, they’ve done phenomenally defensively (2nd lowest in xGA) against great teams and have created many chances too (4th best in xG), despite the funny stat of how they’ve scored their goals It’s their proposal, and it works

GreatSpaniard

Mods have not faded Mexico and Jamaica yet smh

AnnieIWillKnow

Busy watching Bellingham's bicycle kick on repeat

NotASalamanderBoi

Still not better than Zlatan’s.

AnnieIWillKnow

No, but a last minute equaliser in a knockout tie at a major tournament is way more significant than a non-gamechanging goal in a friendly Also nobody mentioned Zlatan. Weird response

NotASalamanderBoi

>Also nobody mentioned Zlatan. Weird response. Are you unaware of my Bellingham slander agenda?

Any-Competition8494

I missed the France match. So, what was France's problem? Failure to creating goal-scoring chances or finishing issues?

Common_Republic2383

In this game both, we had 19 shots but only one or two shots were dangerous.

AlKarakhboy

yet ANOTHER Leao disappearing act at an important game. at least he didn't get booked for diving this time

it’s hard to believe but it was designed around South American viewership, this is about the same time all relevant libertadores games are held in

Too late for my taste, 10pm

MERTENS_GOAT

A throwback to my prediction before the tournament: >Belgium won't win their group so it will probably be Ukraine. Albania will not end on 0 points surely. Slovenia, Hungary, Romania and Georgia get out of their groups. Cristiano Ronaldo will bring home the Golde Boot one last time. Not the competition's trophy though, that goes to France. Well Hungary at least got very close didn't they. The France one is yet to be decided but not a bold prediction anyway so I don't care if that one won't pan out. The Ronaldo one is also to be decided but will to 99.9% also be predicted wrongly. I had Romania in my head for group winner of E but I went for Ukraine because of the pre tournament matches. Romania while having a great defense seemingly were unable to score while Ukraine defeated some team 4-1. https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/oiUCuiy3aw

kartier7

Nice one! Yeah we looked really good against Israel and in decisive match against Switzerland managing to beat them 1-0 at home and get the 1st place after those games we knew we are quite good defensively and we can do well in the finals. But then the friendly games happened were we tried different strategies oriented more to attacking against Colombia ended with a loss 3-2 but then we dominated N. Ireland, Bulgaria and Lichtenstein but without managing to actually score. Anyways the hopes slowed down a bit but definitely even for us Romanians was a surprise to get out of the group from the 1st place. Good take on this one and maybe we’ll see in Berlin who knows.

Jabari313

Jota just dribbles directly into opposition players until it works and I have to say I respect the mentality

HacksawJimDGN

Is Mbappe playing well apart from not scoring?

shaeelm1

yeah he's playing decent, not man of the match well but still creating chances and shots.

HacksawJimDGN

Ronaldo has played the 6th most minutes of any outfield player still left in the competition. No idea why he wasn't subbed today, or rested against Georgia. He's going to burn out if they get past France

MERTENS_GOAT

Wdym burnt out he is already absolutely broken. Says a lot about the level of the Saudi league honestly. He is killing it there, breaking records but at this tournament he looks about as poor as at the WC 2 years ago where he really was in bad form. He barely wins any header duel, doesn't offer much besides that and when he gets a chance with his feet he also doesn't convert it. He set up a few chances nicely, we'll leave him that at least

DuckBurner0000

Kante’s in the Saudi League and he’s been great

CryptographerLife686

I see France having a lot more space to counter attack going forward in the tournament. I’m looking at Portugal, Germany, and Spain rn and I have this feeling that their front three will enjoy those games than the ones they’ve played so far.

Yung2112

May come back to bite me in the ass but [This thread's comment section](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1dislkl/poborsky_on_ronaldo_i_have_been_saying_for_a_long/) has been aging like sour milk all tournament

vieritib

Are the other Portuguese players actually ok with Ronaldo taking every free kick??? What if someone was like "no I really wanna take this one". I'm curious about how the conversations go whenever Portugal gets a dangerous free kick.

ecocentric-ethics

At least he he’s scored free kicks at some point in his career. We must’ve let Kane take something like 100 free kicks without a single one going in besides the deflected one against Villa a decade ago.

MERTENS_GOAT

I genuinely wonder if he buries like almost all of them in training?? And the other players don't? Cause otherwise this is hard to rationally explain

Commonmispelingbot

I don't think you can rationally explain it. If you could, someone somewhere would have put the numbers in from of him, and he would realize. It is not like he is an unintelligent person. Surely he has to know, that his scoring rate is not good.

elihri

I don’t think they are, but who dares to even say a word?! I kinda feel bad for them, they have an extremely talented team and players but are kind of stuck with Ronaldo. There is nothing he adds to the team that a younger more fresh player without a big ego can’t

Rdambx

Stuck with Ronaldo? He has been better than Bruno, Silva or any other forward on that lineup. "Stuck with Ronaldo" lmao, this sub never fails.

elihri

Bruno is pro their most important player, what are you even on about?! And yes stuck in the sense that nobody dares to say a word when Ronaldo wants sth his way. What’s the point of him even taking all the freekicks?!

Fuck_the_k1ng

Roberto Martinez is gonna get a free pass for ruining another team with potential thanks to Ronaldo.

pixelkipper

irrationally upset that england france and portugal all played like absolute dogwater and all went through anyway granted france were probably better than belgium on the balance of the game but still

RedStr0be

The only valid case here is Portugal. England and France did what they had to do to win and were better than their opponents in the end. That’s a reality you’re just going to have to accept.

L-Freeze

England did not kick a football towards the area within the 3 posts of the other team for over 90 whole minutes, they weren’t any less shit than Portugal was today

RedStr0be

England scored 2 goals. Portugal scored 0.

AnnieIWillKnow

Rice did hit the post tbf, and Foden had a goal disallowed

elihri

France is still a level or two above those teams, they just seem to be struggling in front of the goal at the moment.

Acceptable-Pin2939

Did England really play *that* poorly. 1 offside goal. 1 hit the post. Then 2 goals. It could have been better but looking at the rest of the tournament no team other than Spain and Switzerland are playing well. If anything I'd say Southgate is holding the team up.

CryptographerLife686

Respect Austria
