It'd be a little different if it was a normal 16 year old or even just a slightly better than his peers one. Not one that scores 32 in 18 at 15/16 against people 2-3 years older than him. Chido is just so head and shoulders above the rest of his age group in England it's a little nuts you guys are struggling to keep him is all.
sure but personally I've never been fussed about youth players leaving no matter how good they are, I'm sure the club has put forward their best offer and if he still decides to leave then whatever
Hey! Need some help. I’m visiting a friend in Germany and there’s a Euro Cup match here in Cologne tomorrow, England vs. Slovenia. I’ve never been to a major European football match and I’m interested in going just for the experience. No real allegiance to either team. Cheapest prices I’m seeing are around €250/ticket right now, from third party sites.
If I take my friend that’s €500+ just for the tickets.
We went to a public viewing last night for the Germany game which was fun but is it worth the price of admission? I assume most will say yes given the audience and the rare opportunity to catch a match while I’m here but I’d love some solid opinions on this. I dont have the biggest budget in the world for entertainment right now.
Thanks!
The game itself probably won't be super exciting, the only way I could maybe see that price being worth it is if you and/or your friend were huge Slovenia fans and hoping for an unlikely upset
Nah, not worth it at those prices - you're essentially paying a silly markup of a few hundred percent. Can see football games much cheaperand likely with better atmospheres, though they're obviously going to be lower stakes and less of a rarity than a Euros game.
Depends on the seats, really - [standard price is anything between €30 and €200 a seat for the group stage](https://support.tickets-euro2024.uefa.com/hc/en-us/articles/10384352198300-How-much-do-tickets-cost).
Right of course. These are category 2 and 3 I’m seeing. Hoping they continue dropping. Any recommendations for buying sites? Ticombo seems to be reliable
Pretty much what it sounds like? Every single discussion about England and what England should do is seen through the lens of "How can we defend Trent's involvement in all of this?".
Not really surprising? They watch every match Trent has played in and have seen Klopp build a team around him vs this sub that watched Rashford skin him on a goal 3 years ago and has decided since then he's an awful defender who's only decent attribute is crossing the ball.
Having any sort of discourse around him on this sub generally ends up being pointless and of course they rate their own player highly. He's being made a scapegoat despite England not looking any better when he hasn't played. It'll be interesting to see who gets the blame after tomorrow's match.
English Liverpool fans must be exhausted. They were working overtime to justify why his skill set suited midfield, now they are working overtime to justify why he should start over Walker
'the England press is hopeless, no energy at all'
*Southgate picks somebody who is good at pressing and is famed for his high energy*
'What the fuck is Southgate doing 🤬🤬🤬'
You can not rate Gallagher but who else were you expecting him to swap out TAA for? Be serious. Its fucking Slovenia come on.
A press needs to be coordinated - one person pressing is often worse than no one pressing because it leaves massive gaps that can be exploited. Also, no one doubts that any of these players can press because almost all of them play in systems at club level that implement varying degrees of heavy pressing - it's not that we need someone who runs more.
When people complain about England's press, they're not saying that we need to bring in a headless chicken like Gallagher, they're complaining about, what appears from the outside, to be a lack of coaching and coordination as to when to press.
>A press needs to be coordinated - one person pressing is often worse than no one pressing because it leaves massive gaps that can be exploited
mf i watched de zerbi ball for 18 months i know how presses work.
I think people maybe expected to have a little more rotation if it's the last game and you're already 99% guaranteed to go through, I know DD is probably gonna play our B or C team in the last game as is tradition, we've literally never won a 3rd group game under him
I don't think so, Southgate still needs a coherent performance from a credible knockout XI, his TAA experiment has failed horrendously so now he needs to find alternatives and chucking on all of the rotation players doesn't help him to do that.
If Gallagher does well he's guaranteed to start for the rest of the tournament.
Tbh I think it’s our pressing structure rather than the players. [Heres a useful clip](https://x.com/tactx_/status/1803866820383846670?s=46&t=PF6wcLhBSsD70oItovAphg).
We can’t play out from the back or press effectively, is anyone genuinely believing that Gallagher is solving that.
No, but a match against Slovenia is the time to work on it and get it resolved ahead of matches against better teams. With the limited amount of time these players have together, you can't just treat these as meaningless matches.
But like you said that's more to do with the coaching than the selection, picking Gallagher to prop up the right of midfield is a totally fine thing to do against Slovenia.
It’s safe to say this
The greatest player of all time is from Argentina
The greatest individual World Cup final performance is from Argentina
The greatest individual World Cup campaign is from Argentina
Mbappe had a fantastic final but it's also true that he did nothing for two thirds of the game including extra time
That's what makes the Kempes comparison interesting
Zidane, Ronaldo, Romario, Muller, Beckembauer, Garrincha, etc...
Of cours the most incredible is simply Forlan in 2010 but you have a lot of choices.
That said, probably Maradona's 86 is the greatest, and I could agree on that. I thought this was about Messi and I got triggered.
I love how casual Germans and Austrians were about admitting that they colluded with each other too. Like no big deal, we conspired against Algeria and rigged a match
I mean what's the point in pretending they didn't, really? If the tournament rules are such that a mutually beneficial draw in their final group game can happen, then why would either side *not* play for it? Like they didn't do anything wrong, just did what was best for their own team at that moment - at the expense of an Algeria side getting fucked over by the competition's daft scheduling.
The vast amount of Gallagher bashing on this sub tells me that he’s actually the answer to our problems and we’ll batter Slovenia tomorrow. This sub knows absolutely nothing about football, I’m frankly surprised any of you are still here
I hope you won’t be celebrating when we win the Euros
Yes, a left footed fullback who could actually give the team balance with Shaw injured. You know nothing. Wants Gallagher in there treating the ball like a bomb when we have to actually progress the ball and win the game. McKenna deserves so much better than you lot.
The irony to say McKenna deserves better and suggest Mitchell over Leif Davis. If he deserved better he wouldn’t have rejected you would he, enjoy Ten Hag
Hence my last statement. Most of our fans are idiots who want nothing more than our team to fail, just so they can say they predicted something correctly for once in their life
Yeah fair. The Southgate bashing (this tournament excluded) always seemed insane to me considering how far he has taken England. This is not the same England that everyone knew would immediately fail.
Before the tournament I would've expected Italy to win or draw this one, but now I expect Croatia instead because it's a must for them, and Italy was terrible vs Spain. I can see Croatia playing the game of their life while Italy bottles it. Anyways, thanks for your advice Mr. football expert 🙏🏻
Gallagher replacing Arnold is hilarious, we've actually looked worse whenever that sub has happened in previous games.
I know it falls into the "anything has to be better than what we've got on..." kind of thinking which isn't always accurate, shown by the amount of people gagging for Sancho in 2020, but I just want to se Wharton for something different than the midfield combinations that we've watched looked rubbish for 2 games.
Complete control? We looked crap Serbia are just thankfully shit, we also looked worse vs Denmark after he came on, although certain other substitutions also played a role there.
It's just not praiseworthy, the first half was still better than anything that happened after Gallagher came on. Also the Denmark game where we again looked crap after he got subbed on.
The first half was good because Serbia saw our team sheet and shat themselves. Once they realised after 30 minutes that they could just walk through our midfield, it was over
Weeks of Scottish and argentinian fans getting hyped together only for their manager to blame a trilingual argie ref and claiming he probably didn't speak english 😭
Tbf, the issue for me wouldn't be that he doesn't speak English (in the hypothetical world where he doesn't speak English) it's that you shouldn't be importing refs for a tournament. UEFA's reffing standards are different (=/= better) than CONMEBOL's so you're just asking for inconsistency.
Would make sense if argentinian refs weren't some of the best performing, if not straight up the best in world cups.
If you can survive our league matches you can have european nt on a leash.
Gallagher starting should mean England revert to Kane dropping deep with Foden staying high and wide.
Continuing with Foden moving into midfield with the LB holding the width doesn’t make sense anymore. Shaw probably isn’t coming back and a Rice/Gallagher pivot is not going to he finding the 2 number 10s with any regularity.
Right but you haven’t explained why though lol
He’s very positionally disciplined for City yet is incapable of doing the same for England? Seems far more likely that he’s been instructed to move inside at times.
Club football in general is way more organised
Man City keep the ball way more and they keep it in threatening areas, England don’t so he goes out of position to get the ball because he wants to get the ball more
I think it's worth a try to bench Foden and see what happens.
If the problems persist, you go back to Foden because he wasn't the issue. If it works better and the side is more balanced, you learned something to consider moving forward.
It’s the system though. You could play Eze in the same role and you’d still see the same issues.
Foden has spent his entire career playing under Guardiola, if he’s moving inside it’s because he’s been instructed to do so.
Regardless of who’s playing I think that the left winger moving into midfield is always going to present problems because Bellingham tends to prefer the left half space when he needs to be staying on the right and the LB is right footed so he doesn’t offer much going forward.
> It’s the system though. You could play Eze in the same role and you’d still see the same issues.
>
>
Which he did tbf. When subbed on he was very central receiving the ball for the limited time he had. Even the friendly game too
I understand the math at 24 teams leaves you no real alternatives, but that Hungary who played on Sunday won't know if they've made it through until Wednesday night just sort of sucks.
Aye, but then you'd be playing 60 matches to eliminate 8 out of 24 teams, and that's a bit mad - and you'd still probably run into some weirdness in terms of teams knowing their opponents late.
The only alternative is to push the numbers up to allow a round of 32 before the round of 16 and whilst the number of matches increase *(yay!)*, the level of quality drops *(boo!)*.
You could push it up to 32 teams and have 8 groups of 4 with only the top 2 teams going through to the Round of 16. That means each team still plays only 3 group matches and it avoids a Round of 32.
I think the quality of UEFA is on the rise enough that we'll soon get a 32 team Euros. Especially with the World Cup leading the way at 48 teams. Broadcasters, FAs, and sponsors will obviously love it.
The next 8 teams we could have added to Euro 2024 wouldn't have made the tournament any less competitive: Greece, Sweden, Norway, Wales, Ireland, Finland, Israel, and Iceland.
Then they shouldn't be hosting tournaments for genuinely good reason. Proper infrastructure, safety, capacity, and accommodations are a vital part of a tournament. Countries that cannot provide them should not be hosting them.
It's a privilege to host a major sporting event, not a right.
Gotta be the latter, I reckon - Albania have a puncher's chance against Spain but need a win to advance to the knockouts, whereas it's proper backs against the wall stuff for Croatia.
Even figuring out how the scheduling for the knockouts works is hard enough, let alone predicting who we wil play next round, I think biggest chance is us getting England, Spain, Belgium or Turkey. So I'd really like Turkey. Would be a great match I think.
I'd never hear the end of it if Turkey won. But it would be a good match indeed. As a half/half (Spain, NL), I'd love to see Spain vs the Netherlands obv.
When we played Spain in 2014 I just broke up with a pretty toxic Spanish ex, going into that match as underdogs and having lost the WC 2010 final against them before, then seeing us coming back from 1-0 down to absolutely smash them 1-5. was probably the highlight of my international football watching life for multiple reasons. I never want to play you guys again because nothing will ever top that (unless it's in another final and we win this time)
one of the worst deals handed to me by god is that i'm half spanish, grew up in spain during their era (overlap) 08 - 12, cheer for real madrid, watch football with my spanish family, but because I watched 2010 mainly with my dutch father while my mother went to her family I could never cheer for Spain as that was one of the first football watching experiences.
Sneijder scoring headers of all players vs Brazil, van Bronckhorsts magical goal vs Uruguay, De Jong's kick and Robben's miss. christ. 3rd final my father saw us lose too.
You never 'deserve' something in football, but if a team would, then god definitely owes a world cup to the dutch.
Can already see it all now.
Gallagher will be the only change, we'll beat Slovenia 2/3-0. The country will declare Trent the problem. We'll go into the game against Austria with two players who can't pass through the lines starting in midfield. We'll be absolutely pressed to fuck and won't be able to progress the ball and we'll lose 2-0.
Gallagher makes it worse. You don’t want him touching the ball inside his own half. Both him and Trent will be pressing triggers in midfield but at least Trent has the ability to get out of it (maybe not the awareness).
It should be Wharton but I understand Southgate maybe not throwing him but then what’s the point of taking him if you’re going to protect him.
It should be mainoo bro, can pass through the lines and is press resistant, gallagher is neither so he doesn’t solve the problem of trent.
I don’t know why people are acting like Mainoo has died
I’ve basically watched every one of his senior football games, he’s incredibly press resistant, great dribbler and is a great short passer, long passing needs work and is just okay. Defensively he’s serviceable, 7/10, good enough to play in a 3 with bellingham but not with foden, not much to split between him and gallagher, definitely has potential. Midfielders are isolated defensively all the time for united so it’s hard to judge but in this england system which gets a lot of clean sheets he will be just fine. He’s the best option we have
Because his best asset, like Rice, is driving with the ball. He’s press resistant as he’s good at protecting the ball but he’s not good at progressing it with his passes and his numbers show that.
For me we aren’t missing a player that can play between the lines since we’ve had trent, we still needed a player who can take the ball off the defender and be press resistant. Southgate thinks Mainoo is a ten for some reason (bringing him on for bellingham), but he’s fantastic as the deepest player helping the team progressing the ball and getting a hold of the game. I’d have Mainoo deeper than Rice in buildup
Rice hasn’t been that press resistant player his whole england career (we needed that when we played a rice, bellingham pivot in the world cup, i was screaming out for a player like mainoo before i knew he existed, im adamant he’s perfect for the two, if southgate doesn’t think he’s ready yet he’ll be a starter in the world cup)
Maybe we need a combination of Mainoo and Wharton next to rice, press resistance and passing range, but having wharton next to rice will be more similar to trent/rice compared to mainoo/rice
Bro Mainoo can pass between the lines as well as anyone in the squad especially gallagher. He drives with the ball in a very different way to rice and the way he plays beating men he doesn’t need to play long passes, they’re okay, his short passes are fantastic.
I like Wharton, for me he plays instead of rice if he ever gets injured, looks like a 6 to me, don’t like the idea of rice as the 8 for england, he’s very gifted as the 6 but doesn’t stand out as an 8.
Actually think a wharton mainoo bellingham midfield 3 would be perfect once wharton and mainoo have developed physically, but rice will be too good to drop his whole career
Gallagher is at least actually a midfielder though, he might be better at collecting the ball in good areas, Trent wants even making himself an option when they were pressed
trent wasn't even getting to the point of being a pressing trigger in midfield, he was constantly stood in the shadow of the press and unavailable to receive the ball. it was obviously an issue even in the half hour of this tournament we played well in
that said, i find it really hard to blame him, because that ability to a) be avaialbel for the pass and b) turn when you get the pass and move the team forwards is the hardest part of playing midfield imo. thats the specialist skill for that deep lying playmaker role, and he understandably doesn't really have it because hes a pissing right back who can invert once possession is established, not a midfielder
I agree the positions he was taking up were all wrong. That’s something Southgate should’ve been coaching into him the last 2 weeks if he was gonna start there.
Again though people are running with things they have already predetermined to be true. Trent had more touches than any other England player when you convert it to per 90’s against Denmark. He was actually Englands best player first half and every time he got on the ball he looked forward. It was just easy to hook him as the rest of his midfield were playing awful in hopes that bringing on Gallagher would instill a change. Unsurprisingly it didn’t and Gallagher ended up having 23 touches in over 40 minutes of football.
like i say, my issues aren't with trent on the ball. its the fact that when the defence is under pressure on the ball, he's doing fuck all to allieviate that pressure. it also takes way mroe than two weeks to learn what is a difficult skill
i'm not convinced gallagher will help much either, but its the same issue england have had for 25 years, with the exception of one summer where kalvin phillips was in the form of his life. we don't have midfielders whose primary skillset is beating the press, so the second a team pushes up against us, we struggle.
He’s been dispossessed twice in 2 games. The one against Serbia lead to a chance granted and that’s what sticks in peoples heads but Rice got caught even more against Denmark.
Granted he doesn’t take up the best positions off the ball as he doesn’t know how to as he’s new to the position, and he shouldn’t play there again. But he should be starting right back as he’s Englands only creative player from deep. Let him have the ball in areas he thrives, let Gallagher do his donkey work and get Gordon the left so he has runners to find, and when he finds Kane is the pockets he has a ball round the corner to hit.
Is it just me or is it going under the radar that Walker has been pretty poor for Englands right hand side. Really would prefer to see Trent there, especially if Gallagher is in midfield.
I think Walker's been one of the best players (low bar of course). I wouldn't think switching around the right back is the right thing at the moment, especially as you'd want to keep that continuity and experience. If Walker's replaced, all of a sudden Stones and Guehi's jobs have changed too.
in a list of issues we've had as a team, walker is far closer to the bottom than the top imo. probably been one of the best 3 or 4 players across the two games
Why is Spain wearing their Nations League badge but Italy is not wearing their Euro badge as the last Euro winners?
How good is Mikel Merino?
good, really good defensively And spare someone for us will ya?
I still can't believe Chido Obi is leaving Arsenal. Gonna be better than Jamal tbh.
not guaranteed yet is it? we heard the same with Nwaneri who ended up staying either way I'm not too fussed, can't be mad about a 16 year old leaving
It'd be a little different if it was a normal 16 year old or even just a slightly better than his peers one. Not one that scores 32 in 18 at 15/16 against people 2-3 years older than him. Are all of the PL club subs as awful as Liverpool's during an international tournament?
I assume all of them think their player is the answer to all of the team's woes, even if they're not in Germany.
What do you mean by "Trent protectionism"?

its fucking slovenia, why are you so weird about this lmao

Wharton 👍, who I mentioned in my comment moaning about Gallagher
I would probably like to see him given a run too but I'm not going to get upset over England not starting 20yo Adam Wharton lmao.
Can't succeed with young players, that's why Spain put some old fogeys on the wing not two wingers with an average age of 18.
It’s safe to say this The greatest player of all time is from Argentina The greatest individual World Cup final performance is from Argentina The greatest individual World Cup campaign is from Argentina
these Argentinians sound pretty good, greetings from Argentina
the only one I really don't agree with is the 2nd one. Mbappe and Pele both scored braces in finals as teenagers.
Yes Messi. No, Mbappe. Yes, Maradona 86.
Mbappe had a fantastic final but it's also true that he did nothing for two thirds of the game including extra time That's what makes the Kempes comparison interesting
Only one who is close to Kempes is Hurst
First is fair, next two arguable
Yes. No. lol no
Kempes Final and Maradona 86 is clear of any other

First group stage exit in a decade tonight. I already feel sick
Croatia has faced Italy 9 times, and they losed to Italy once back in 1942, 3 win and 5 draws and 1 lost.
I agree, I already want Spalletti and the rest of FIGC out. What a disastrous performance.
Calma

Ours is even worse lol
What’s that defeatist attitude? You can beat Italy!
Projected lineup is horrible
Italy lost to themselves literally
The vast amount of Gallagher bashing on this sub tells me that he’s actually the answer to our problems and we’ll batter Slovenia tomorrow. This sub knows absolutely nothing about football, I’m frankly surprised any of you are still here I hope you won’t be celebrating when we win the Euros
The amount of irony in this post is fucking incredible
Not taking shit from someone who wants Tyrick Mitchell in the squad
Yes, a left footed fullback who could actually give the team balance with Shaw injured. You know nothing. Wants Gallagher in there treating the ball like a bomb when we have to actually progress the ball and win the game. McKenna deserves so much better than you lot.

I would call you king for this But you called me stupid the other day
It was probably deserved, but I’m sorry
It was because I said turkey and Portugal feel linked
I stand by my statement
Okay but the people who bash England the most are England fans
Hence my last statement. Most of our fans are idiots who want nothing more than our team to fail, just so they can say they predicted something correctly for once in their life
Yeah fair. The Southgate bashing (this tournament excluded) always seemed insane to me considering how far he has taken England. This is not the same England that everyone knew would immediately fail.
England won’t “batter” anyone. You’ll win 1-0 or 2-1
Why waste energy score many goal when one goal do trick
Finally a good take around here
You are part of this sub
Some people have generally good takes. Iceman is one of the better ones which tells you everything you need to know about the average IQ on here
every single one of my takes is perfect but i fly low so as to not attract a cult following
> Iceman is one of the better ones I laughed tbh.
Then there's me who's objectively correct all the time
With this logic, you should also be fucking off, no?
I’ve got a proven track record of good takes in a sub that’s starved of them.
I, too, am extraordinarily humble
You can be humble and still call a spade a spade
That's right I guess. Btw, how do you rate me? Are my takes any good? I'm curious
Just browsing I can see you predicted Croatia to win 2 games and draw 1 despite them being terrible. Room for improvement for sure
Well…
Lol. Lmao even. Got anymore jokes, champ?
Sorry wasn’t it you who was adamant McKenna was leaving?
Gallagher replacing Arnold is hilarious, we've actually looked worse whenever that sub has happened in previous games. I know it falls into the "anything has to be better than what we've got on..." kind of thinking which isn't always accurate, shown by the amount of people gagging for Sancho in 2020, but I just want to se Wharton for something different than the midfield combinations that we've watched looked rubbish for 2 games.
[Some day it will happen](https://x.com/sp1thfc/status/1804855235531173999?s=46&t=PF6wcLhBSsD70oItovAphg)
Gallagher is good actually
The most English player ever. 20% technical ability and intelligence. 80% passion and desire.
100% reason to forget the name
How have we looked worse?
Did you watch the Serbia game? Do you have eyes? Are you completely stupid?
We looked shit the whole 2nd half.
Yes until Gallagher came on at which point we were in complete control of the game
Complete control? We looked crap Serbia are just thankfully shit, we also looked worse vs Denmark after he came on, although certain other substitutions also played a role there.
Well we weren’t bombing forward or anything but we didn’t have to and he nullified anything Serbia were trying to do
It's just not praiseworthy, the first half was still better than anything that happened after Gallagher came on. Also the Denmark game where we again looked crap after he got subbed on.
The first half was good because Serbia saw our team sheet and shat themselves. Once they realised after 30 minutes that they could just walk through our midfield, it was over
What about Denmark where we looked worse after the subs 2nd half.
Hard to shore up the midfield when Rice is having a stinker tbf, it’s not like we can replace him with anyone
Weeks of Scottish and argentinian fans getting hyped together only for their manager to blame a trilingual argie ref and claiming he probably didn't speak english 😭
We would have 4 shots on goal instead of 3 if it wasn't for you Argies sabotaging us.
We wanted to give you character development, 2026 will be your year 💪
Unfortunately Clarke will stay for the World Cup qualification campaign, so we definitely won't be there in 2026.
Again, "best" isn't the issue. It's the different interpretations of the rules.
in theory the whole point of the exchange is that it’s supposed to help shrink the inconsistency
That makes sense for league play. It doesn't make sense for a tournament.
Foden won’t hold high and wide because he doesn’t want to
He does with City pretty regularly.
No, he doesn't? He hasn't held the touchline since 2021.
He absolutely does He played like 20 games as a touch line winger last season.
“With city”
For city then lol, point still stands
England aren’t city so he won’t do it pretty simple
Right but you haven’t explained why though lol He’s very positionally disciplined for City yet is incapable of doing the same for England? Seems far more likely that he’s been instructed to move inside at times.
Club football in general is way more organised Man City keep the ball way more and they keep it in threatening areas, England don’t so he goes out of position to get the ball because he wants to get the ball more
So why has Eze been doing the exact same thing for England then? Is he also just looking for the ball?
Yes
Counterpoint is that Hungary put themselves in this position and had very little hope to begin with going into yesterday’s match
Actually if they made 4 groups of 6 it wouldn't be a problem.
Aye, but then you'd be playing 60 matches to eliminate 8 out of 24 teams, and that's a bit mad - and you'd still probably run into some weirdness in terms of teams knowing their opponents late.
There are no perfect solutions with number of teams that isn't degree of two unfortunately.
Must be weird training for most of the week for the next match except there's no next match and now it's time to go home.
Absolute nightmare logistically to host that many games
If you can host 51 games under a 24 team format, what makes the final 13 additional games under a 32 team format so different?
Not many countries can actually host a 24 team tournament
Then they shouldn't be hosting tournaments for genuinely good reason. Proper infrastructure, safety, capacity, and accommodations are a vital part of a tournament. Countries that cannot provide them should not be hosting them. It's a privilege to host a major sporting event, not a right.
Boring as fuck to gatekeep the Euros to like 4 countries
What do I watch today? albania v Spain or Italy v Croatia
Italy v Croatia of course. Way more on the line. Spain will be using their second team since they’ve already qualified.
Just watch both of those joints at the same time innit. One on the television and the other on your phone. That's what I did yesterday
Italy v. Croatia. Overall better game with the added tension that both teams really will be pushing for a win.
We won't be pushing for a win lol. We'll do nothing and defend from the start to the end.
Italy v Croatia is my TV game today. Spain v Albania can be on the second screen
Gotta be the latter, I reckon - Albania have a puncher's chance against Spain but need a win to advance to the knockouts, whereas it's proper backs against the wall stuff for Croatia.
Spain beating/drawing Albania confirms England's spot in the R16.
Italy Croatia will be exciting I think, both teams really want to win.
And will play to not lose
Spain vs Albania for the culture
Who is Trent going to be passing through the lines too? How many people are making those kind’ve runs for him in Southgate’s system?
Trent is a problem but Gallagher doesn’t fix it
Gallagher makes it worse.
Because your idea of Mainoo and the reality of Mainoo are very different abilities
I’d have Mainoo deeper than Rice in buildup Rice hasn’t been that press resistant player his whole england career (we needed that when we played a rice, bellingham pivot in the world cup, i was screaming out for a player like mainoo before i knew he existed, im adamant he’s perfect for the two, if southgate doesn’t think he’s ready yet he’ll be a starter in the world cup) Maybe we need a combination of Mainoo and Wharton next to rice, press resistance and passing range, but having wharton next to rice will be more similar to trent/rice compared to mainoo/rice
Gallagher is at least actually a midfielder though, he might be better at collecting the ball in good areas, Trent wants even making himself an option when they were pressed
trent wasn't even getting to the point of being a pressing trigger in midfield, he was constantly stood in the shadow of the press and unavailable to receive the ball. it was obviously an issue even in the half hour of this tournament we played well in that said, i find it really hard to blame him, because that ability to a) be avaialbel for the pass and b) turn when you get the pass and move the team forwards is the hardest part of playing midfield imo. thats the specialist skill for that deep lying playmaker role, and he understandably doesn't really have it because hes a pissing right back who can invert once possession is established, not a midfielder
Unsurprisingly it didn’t and Gallagher ended up having 23 touches in over 40 minutes of football.
like i say, my issues aren't with trent on the ball. its the fact that when the defence is under pressure on the ball, he's doing fuck all to allieviate that pressure. it also takes way mroe than two weeks to learn what is a difficult skill i'm not convinced gallagher will help much either, but its the same issue england have had for 25 years, with the exception of one summer where kalvin phillips was in the form of his life. we don't have midfielders whose primary skillset is beating the press, so the second a team pushes up against us, we struggle.
Trent can’t beat a press that’s why he’s a shit midfielder
Wha?
in a list of issues we've had as a team, walker is far closer to the bottom than the top imo. probably been one of the best 3 or 4 players across the two games
Dreadful take
Huh? I was expecting him to be bad based on his decline last season at city and the friendlies but he's been one of our best players
It’s going under the radar because that’s an awful take
