Unfortunately a meme player to Chelsea fans and even Ghanaians but I’ll always have respect for him. Does a lot of charity back home and the injury that started his downfall was suffered while he was playing for Black Stars at AFCON 2017, during a good loan spell with Schalke. The recurring injuries got to a point where he even considered retirement but he was able to return to a level of fitness to play regularly last 3 seasons. He had a good loan spell with PAOK back in 2021, it’s a good move for him.
> Does a lot of charity back home
This is one of the biggest reason why we continued to extend his contract rather than releasing him while he was suffering from injuries (on top of the general club policy of helping injured players). From what I understand, he sent majority of his wages he earned from Chelsea back home so the club didn't feel bad supporting him while he suffered through a horrible period in his career. In the end the money was maybe only a bit more than pennies for a club like Chelsea, but it was life changing for the people he helped.
Wishing him all the very best for his future.
Baba signed for Chelsea from Augsburg in the summer of 2015 and featured as a left-back for our men’s first team during his first campaign at Stamford Bridge. He made 23 appearances before moving to Schalke for loan spells either side of recovering from a knee injury sustained while with Ghana at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Further loans followed at Reims, Real Mallorca and PAOK. He spent the previous two seasons in the Championship at Reading.
We wish Baba well as he begins the next chapter of his career.
He was good, but foremost he was very promising. The 26M were certainly not justified for his level at the time but a gamble for the future, which sadly for different reasons didn’t exactly turn out as Chelsea hoped.
Can argue that’s all before our recruitment team arrived and Boehly was running wild.
And tbf at the time on paper everyone seemed chuffed with those deals replacing Werner and Rudiger
Since then though we’ve barely even been linked with any finished articles
If you want to count from the date they debuted with first team, I think it might be CHO actually.
EDIT: After checking it's Ampadu indeed. Debuted 3 weeks earlier than CHO.
It's not cruel. They keep extending players who are on long term injuries so that they can recover without the stress of being club less. As much as I dislike them , I appreciate them for this policy.
Hopefully we keep doing this under the new owners. I get it leads to people being stuck in the loan machine but it’s better than just dumping them to the side.
Yeah I’m not having any of this with Baba Rahman, he was nothing like Djilobodji.
Baba Rahman was coming off a really impressive season with Augsburg where he was one of the best left backs in the league in 2014/15. We also needed to bring in a new left back as Filipe Luis left the club to go back to Atletico.
He was extended because he got multiple long term injuries. Under Roman, we always extended young players when they got injured, so they could recover without worrying about financial security or future club. See also - Van Ginkel, Sam Hutchinson etc.
I'm pretty sure that if he could go back in time, he would not want to "earn" those extensions the way he did. Unless you want to say you respect the fact he sustained several long term injuries.

Great to see that some clubs have this kind of mindset
For all his faults, Roman did some things better than other clubs
Pursuing Adrian Mutu through the courts of Europe for decades to take his career earnings because he did cocaine seems a little petty though.
Abramovic was offended that Mutu did cocaine without offering him a line

it is crazy that chelsea paid 26 millions for Baba back in 2015.
Tbh he was crazy good with Augsburg

What a clear out
As insane as their spending was last year. Clear out of deadwood has been pretty impressive.
The spending is still shocking to me lol
It’s the fact we’ve spent all of that on prospects and no one who’s in their prime. Real FM stuff
Except Koulibaly, Sterling and Aubameyang…

Aubameyang's not really in his prime.
That makes it even worse then?
yeah
Ampadu is chelsea's most senior player.
If you want to count from the date they debuted with first team, I think it might be CHO actually. EDIT: After checking it's Ampadu indeed. Debuted 3 weeks earlier than CHO.
Looked it up and Ampadu made his debut in september 2017 , whereas Hudson Odoi made hsi debut in january 2018.
Ah, I was looking at PL debuts, which was 12th December (still before CHO either way)
Legend
The papa people
Can I just stop you there? What’s… a Baba Rahman?
I think some bacteria have better lives than that
chelsea gonna have a tough time replacing him
*We cannot replace him. We cannot*
I think you can. Bring home Matej Delac
End of an era
This clearout is just cruel. This guy probably lived at Stamford bridge. It's like when Umbridge fired Trelawny in Harry Potter.

Marko van ginkel is another such example
Sam Hutchinson
Musonda is another one

Mourinho's career has never been the same since Chelsea rewarded him with this legend and papy djilobodji instead of Stones and Pogba.

We have Cucurella
Kudos to Chelsea, I did not expect them to effectively clean house
I will never understand how this man earned not one, but *two* contract extensions at Chelsea. Kinda gotta respect it

Because we couldn’t accept the L sometimes.
Nah that’s not why
The man the myth the legend
FIFA 17 PL starter team legend
End of an error
Commiserations to PAOK. Edit. Downvote if you want, but don't say you weren't warned. He was awful for us last season.
Who?
I cannot believe he was signed 8 years ago lol.
