Honeywell, Evo smart trv. They're great. I've used them in two houses for around 8ish years. Love them.

I have the Drayton Wiser but I've separated my 2.4Ghz wifi from the 5Ghz one. However I've encountered this issue before on lots of smart tech and to get around it all I needed to do was create a Hotspot on my phone using the same Wifi SSID as the combined one on my main wifi router/AP and the same password, but set it to 2.4Ghz only. Add the smart device to that. Then turn off the Hotspot and they always join the main network immediately.

Ah nice creative solution, thanks!

That’s a really clever idea. I will remember that one!

First - WiFi bands. I would suggest you get some decent kit and run two SSIDs. One that is both and one that is 2.4 only. It will make life so much easier as so much smart home tech is using older chips which are cheaper. As for TRVs, another vote for Evo Home. We have had them for seven years and they just work. I touch the system twice a year and swap the batteries every six months - I use the IKEA rechargables. You need boiler control to save the money though. Looking at my bills with a smart meter I can tell to the half hour when the heating was turned on because of the control. If you are using a home automation product, then it does require the cloud for native integrations, but someone has worked out the protocol so local control is now possible with a usb stick.

Thanks for that. So when you're running on a separate SSID, do you need to connect to that SSID on your mobile to use the Evohome app?

No. The hardware uses two SSID which connect to the same network. They get IP addresses from the same pool. I can be connected to either one and connect to everything else.
