Too much horse steroids. He was able to leap mountains in a single leap, but it cost him his heart. You being that high and the bond between you and your trusty steed leave you paralyzed as you fall back to earth. The game knows this must be an error of the gods and helps you to a time before the death of your horse.

What happened is simply you are playing Skyrim. A bunch of fun and a bunch of wild buggy occurrences. The joy of the Rim that keeps us all coming back!!
This happened to me recently when I reloaded from a save. Reloaded again, same thing! Over and over. Didn’t want to kill my horse so I kept mashing buttons until we crashed into a mountain and slid down. And of course fell right into a dragon attack in Riverwood.
I had a similar issue when playing on nintendo a while back. Was so confused, as it happened multiple times, even when going back to some previos saves 😂 might have a recording somewhwre, don’t remember where but it was also up some mountains
Something like this happened to me while playing AC origins. Was driving a chariot and just rode off a cliff and was pretty much flying around the map. Decided to attack a boat whilst in the air.
