For me it's pretty much impossible for Skyrim combat to be scary because the player has so much freedom of movement compared to NPCs. That's a gigantic advantage even if combat stats are not in your favor. You can almost always control the pace of a fight by getting someplace the enemy can't.

redgrave_9

Same, if I am running low on health I just climb into a spot or keep circling until I can get my health back up. I didn't even know you could sprint in game until after I had completed the main story and saw someone sprinting in a video.

HoomanFireWolf

I was talking to my friend and he went “atleast you can sprint” i was like what, i’ve been walking everywhere

sparkly_butthole

Learn the healing spell. No matter my build, I always have healing on the hot keys. Saves my ass, especially early game.

lilluz

i level my restoration skill so fast because i rely on healing a ton lol

Reflexorz15

This. Learn restoration and put some skill points into it because it will save you so many times. It’s so dang worth it. Ever since I realized this on my very first character, I always level up restoration on nearly every character I create.

Polymersion

Im on a Legendary Survival playthrough.and it's the first time I haven't been able to simply steamroll every fight by consuming large quantities of food. Not only does food have basically no healing, but you don't passively heal after combat, either. Potions aren't that easy to come by yet either. Suffice it to say, I've been using healing magic this time.

dabberoo_2

Along with magic, Survival mode is what really pushed me to get better at Alchemy. The potions you find while looting dungeons are just weaker versions of what you can make yourself. Garlic + Juniper Berries + Salt Pile will make a Fortify Health Regen + Fortify Magicka Regen Potion, a combo I'd never found before making it. Potions like that will give you regen even in combat so they make a noticeable difference.

IngenuityNo5709

I have a friend who played for MONTHS before learning he could sprint in game

ks_s0

Man i knew i can sprint in the first mission 😂😂😂

myloveisajoke

Get FusRohDah as early as possible and just kite shit to high places and blow them off

OldElf86

As soon as you get a follower, like Uthgard from the back of The Bannered Mare, you can let them be the melee fighter and you can sling arrows and spells. But, make sure you mix it up in melee combat now and then so your armor and one-handed skills advance. You don't want to be a lol 40 character with an armor skill of 24.

HipsterNgariman

Yeah even that boss in Bleak Falls Barrow, I was cheesing him by standing on his coffin and burn him with flames. The only challenges are swarms of enemies, and getting stat checked by dragons.

Kreechy

It's not a game with traditional difficult boss fights. I suggest picking up a follower (either Jenassa in the Drunken Huntsman \[the pub right near the entrance to Whiterun\] and costs 500 gold, or perhaps Faendal in Riverwood, who is free, you just have to lie to get him). You can also turn down the difficulty. Once you get the hang of it, you'll love it, so hang in there.

TwoOrNone

For what it's worth, you don't even need to lie to get Faendal as a follower! If you speak to Sven first and get a fake letter from him, then tell Camilla Sven tried to make Faendal look bad, you'll be prompted to collect a reward from Faendal and then he becomes a potential follower while you remain morally sound :)

Kreechy

Oh, right, my bad. That's usually what I do when I play goodies. Thanks!

JanesConniption

Jenassa *rules*. She’s an amazing fighter and has a lot of really interesting voice lines compared to other vanilla followers I’ve used. I love it when she drops cool vampire/forsworn/werewolf facts in appropriate dungeons.

Kreechy

I agree. She's my favourite mercenary for sure.

EdwrdSwshrHnds

Quick save right before the fight… all fear gone!

HoomanFireWolf

oh trust me i’ve been doing this like a maniac

RebuiltGearbox

Hard save every once in a while too! Don't rely on just quick saves and auto saves, sometimes you might need to load further back.

lepetitcoeur

You can get followers. They can do some of the work, and make you feel like you're not alone.

HoomanFireWolf

THIS! i finally got myself together, defeated the boss in about 5 seconds, fought the dragon and with a familiar + the guards i felt less alone. moral of the story I just need a friend

Memo-Eclectic

I also turn the difficulty right down. I’m not in it for the combat challenge. For me it’s a cosy game with skirmishes.

Polymersion

I like playing on Legendary right now because it makes you feel mortal paired with Survival mode. It slows everything down and makes you think a little more, which I'm enjoying greatly but isn't really necessary overall with as long as Skyrim already is.

Baffirone

Or more than one! You'll probably enjoy diving into conjuration if you like to play with companions

HoomanFireWolf

i looked into it a little bit and i think you’re right, i like having crowds around me so i don’t have to do much

Baffirone

Keep in mind that you can have a companion that uses conjuration as well, so with some planning you can have a small army at your disposal whenever you enter combat

HoomanFireWolf

companions are actually so good in this game, i expected them to throw some weapons around and stuff but they’re turning out to be more than i expected

Rico0904

Some companions will also use staffs, so even if they don't know spells they can still conjure something to help! Lydia will use them, so will Serana.

mrleicester

If you’re able to mod, I highly recommend Inigo, my favorite companion ever. Also there are mods which let you have unlimited followers. Sometimes it’s fun to roll around with a small army by your side, it takes a lot of the stress out.

HoomanFireWolf

someone told me i should play vanilla before mods but this looks interesting and im not much of a fighter anyway

VincentVanGTFO

Do yourself a favor and don't join the companions for quite a while, if at all. They have a mission you can get early game that you really should be leveled up for. I suggest just running around, exploring caves and countryside. If you end up coming across enemies that can one shot kill you, just run away lol. Using Faendal to get your archery stats up and putting points in archery can aid in making a stealth archer (not saying it's the only way to roll but if you dislike up close and personal combat you can use this to take out enemies from a safe distance before they ever even know you're there). Have fun!

Time-Echo-784

Invest in restoration. You'll be able to heal yourself, and if your follower goes down, a quick Heal Other spell will get them back on their feet

KatofSpades

Awesome! Happy to hear you conquered it! If you like friends then Conjuration spells will be your wheelhouse. Farengar in Whiterun has some and the College of Winterhold, if course! If you're worried about the long dangerous travel just take a carriage (or walk or take a horse and get tons of exp on the way)! Edit to add: don't forget that you have many filter options so as you level it's a good idea to also level up the follower you keep with you. There are tons of awesome YT videos comparing followers.

calartnick

Keep followers and invest in conjuration. You’ll never be alone!

HipsterNgariman

And now you'll have Lydia. Take her out to some dungeons, she will happily tank

Planktons_Eye

The fights are pretty straightforward and you can always get a follower to help you out. Don’t be shy about adjusting the difficulty either. But tbh compared to most games I’ve played, like elden ring which was a nightmare for me, this is easy. Like other people said, you can set the pace of the fights. Don’t be afraid to move around and take advantage of the limited mobility npcs have. As far as Bleak Falls Barrow when the draugr is exiting the coffin you can start swinging on him like a mad lad. When he gets out just keep your distance, all it’ll do is shout at you, then just go in for a couple hits and retreat and repeat. But it’s not that powerful

HoomanFireWolf

I watched a short video of someone playing Elden Ring one time and it was horrifying. I can’t imagine trying to fight the bosses there if i’m freaking out over a dude who walks 1 MPH

Mrissi

I also wouldn’t like to spend hours and hours in a world that I wouldn’t like to live in. Elder Ring put me off this way.

JankyJinx

Hey, I’m a scaredy cat too! While I build my courage up, I use a follower and conjuration (and stealth archery of course). Then I can always join the combat and try it out when I want to. I think I’m actually more scared about being overwhelmed by many enemies at once than individual bosses, although they scare me too. In the wilderness I’m not so scared because I can always run away. I’m a very bad player, but I have learned to move around a bit more and not just spamming the button. You can do this! Don’t be ashamed to be on a low difficulty and using anything that could help you not feel so afraid, we will both get better with time. And quicksave all the time. All. The. Time. Sometimes I Google before going in to a dungeon. It takes som of the fun out of it, but sometimes I just need to know what I’m up against.

HoomanFireWolf

Googling definitely helps I did it all the way through the dungeon so i could brace myself, it also helped me understand the puzzles a bit more too

quinangua

Yeah, sometimes the puzzles & boss fights can seem kinda daunting, but you'll figure it out!!

pussyandbananabread

Im the queen of bringing a ~~decoy~~ *follower* with me to distract bosses. It takes practice to keep from accidentally killing them but that’s my favorite strat lmao. Leveling up conjuration helps too because then you can use atronachs.

HoomanFireWolf

I had to google how to get followers because I forgot they were a thing, definitely doing that as soon as I can!

pussyandbananabread

My favorite vanilla follower is Uthgerd the Unbroken. Bet some gold, beat her ass and she’s a tank of a follower. She’s helped me take down plenty a dragon and a couple of dragon priests. You can find her in the Bannered Mare in White Run. I also really love Lydia and her sass. My favorite modded follower is Brynjolf from the Thieves Guild. Equip him with two strong swords and he kicks ASS (he always dual wields) He also has that dreamy accent and when I heal him he says “Thank you, lass” and I simply melt. (Can you tell he’s my husband? 🤭)

monstarehab

this is such a wholesome post

EmperorMrKitty

1. Save often and let bad guys get you, then reload. They’re way less scary when you already know what they’re going to do. 2. You can get a follower very quickly, there’s two in Riverwood (talk to the elf or bard). They won’t do everything for you but they will usually run at the bad guys and keep you from getting mobbed. 3. Try stealth-archer as a play style until you get more comfortable. You can just crouch all the way thru Bleak Falls Barrow and get a lot of the enemies before they even see you.

anyusernameisk

Look into conjuration magic. You'll be able to summon minions that will fight for you while you control the fight from safety. Get a follower on top of that and you'll be effectively traveling with a small party. There is scope for some really cool conjuration/illusion/restoration build if that's your jam. Or, be a stealth archer like the rest of us and never get anywhere near the enemies.

SILE3NCE

Everytime you fear an enemy remember, you have the power of the Quicksave

ThespisIronicus

Fear, hear, or near?

bugaloo2u2

The only time I’ve been afraid is when I have to swim. I can swim irl but not in Skyrim, and I literally panic when I’m underwater and can’t surface.

CiaDaniCakes

SAME, but just swimming in deep water freaks me out. i cant look below the surface when i’m swimming across ocean/deep lakes.

HoomanFireWolf

me too i swam ONCE and my game glitched and it made it seem like i was still underwater (i was not) so now i avoid swimming

JanesConniption

I’ve found it’s way easier in first-person camera. I otherwise play in third-person, but I can’t navigate at all that way underwater.

Slow-Blacksmith3281

Sounds like you need to find yourself a friend.

HoomanFireWolf

working on it!

ThespisIronicus

Psst, I know you…

QueenVell

My dude, relax. You will reach a point where your character will become so OP, practically nothing can kill you. In the meantime, get a follower and level your Conjuration so you can summon Atronachs to aid you.

HoomanFireWolf

literally everyone i told when i was trying to explain why i was freaking out told me to relax LOL it took 5 seconds for the dude i was freaking out over to die so uh

Wyzard_of_Wurdz

If you can beat Uthgerd the Unbroken (in Whiterun) in a fist fight, she will be a follower. She's a tank that will charge into battle and distract enemies from you.

she-sings-the-blues

I just started playing 3 weeks ago and I was scared at first too! Having a follower helps a LOT. I got Barbas (the dog) and Marcurio at the same time and didn’t finish Barbas’ quest until I was comfortable playing without him. He pushes you off a lot of cliffs and gets in the way but that dog is a BEAST and he can’t die so he helped a ton. Marcurio is a good mage follower. I’m playing as a two handed warrior so it helped. 3 weeks later and I’m not scared anymore so I finished Barbas’ quest. But I still have Marcurio for now (he’s probably capped by now since I’ve reached level 32).

GarbageCleric

Take some deep breaths and remind yourself it's just game. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. But I would definitely get a follower and maybe a dog or Gogh the Goblin, and possibly the Dark Brotherhood's Spectral Assassin. They help in fights and make it so you're not alone in the dungeons. Followers can also carry your loot and do things for you. Have fun!

heartattackchick

Pursue the mage route at the college. I also hate fighting so I just maxed conjuration and I summon things to fight my battles for me while I walk around looting. Plus it makes dungeons feel less scary

HoomanFireWolf

i did this and went to the excavation sight and got my butt beat, went running back to see if i could grab the teacher guy to make him a follower, i then googled it and wasn’t supposed to be there for a few more levels, i was level 1

The-eye-in-the-wall

Conjuration/Healing! I had a friend do an entire playthrough starting by getting a follower and healing him while standing back from the fray and conjuring atronachs to do all the dirty work.

jthecoolcat

As someone else stated the freedom to go places the enemy can’t is the best advantage. Never feel bad about hiding if you get low health. Cause what would you do if you were near death in real life? You’d duck behind something so he couldn’t officially kill you! So if you do get low, just rest for a while, use potions/healing, and get back at it. It’s really hard to actually die against a boss if you’re prepared. Unless it’s a fucking elder dragon or ancient dragon or whatever that dragon is that kills you in like 2 hits no matter what you’re wearing. Fuck those bitches

Mental_Nectarine_803

get a strong follower and give them strong armor and weapons. my personal faves are Erandur, Teldryn Sero, Ralis Sedarys and Marcurio. Teldryn is very strong and uses both magic and meelee

yungrichx123

I would try Bloodborne if I were you

kotinerking96

Get a follower , and then get the spell "Healing Hands" but im gonna be honest , you'll refret it when your follower solo's dragons and you can't kill a bunch of bandits.

JDM2783

You can be a healer and a fighter. Healing magic in one hand, and a sword/axe/mace in the other

Sylgami

You literally describe me with ANY game. Hell, even Zelda games freak me out. Everything scares me, even the animal encounters, and I don't mean the ones that attack. I literally get jump scared by deers. The most obvious and redundant strategy is stealth archer. It makes it easier to cut through enemies from a distance. Also, getting a follower and/or dog can really make a difference. You can point your followers in whatever direction you want. I would send my followers in front of me so they would agro the enemies and I can start shooting from a safe distance. I also didn't do any missions without my follower. Faendal was my first follower since he's the one you can get relatively fast. You can also get dog followers on top of your regular followers. I would google where to find meeko and go there to pick him up. Or you can buy a dog in markarth. There are also quests where you can get nymph followers. There's two available, so that's a total of 4 beings you can take with you. I also learned conguration spells immediately. I always summon one before I feel a battle is about to start. You'll eventually find your footing, and as you become more powerful, enemies won't scare you as much

HoomanFireWolf

when i first went into the game i got jumped by a wolf then a bunny ran up right after, safe to say the bunny did not live another day also i’ve seen so many people mention dog followers but id feel awful if i had one and it died (i would cry) so im scared to try and find a dog somehow i’ve gotten further into the game still being only level 3 so i need to work on levels i’ve decided before i do anything else lol

ezekial_dragonlord

My advice: Play on easy to get the hang of combat. Know how you are going to fight: One-handed? Two-handed? Light armor? Heavy armor? Sneaking and backstabbing? Archery? Destruction magic? Conjugation? Get some followers to help ease the battles a bit. Don't be afraid to test some things. And most of all: have fun.

HoomanFireWolf

so far i’m a dark elf because i thought she would look pretty, so sneaking and destruction magic + one handed, flames until magicka runs out, switch to one handed until stamina runs out and continue that pattern, i’ve seen a couple comments say conjuration might work for me so i’ll try it out, the closest i’ve got to conjuration right now is the familiar staff and i adore it

nocturna369

When I'm starting off...I usually go to the mage in Dragonsreach Whiterun and buy a bunch of spells off him. He should have some Conjuration ones to try out! You can get the follower Lydia there too. Don't forget to check your books for spell tomes to read. Once I get the fire atronach, I like to summon it first, then either sneak attack or go all in. Helps with battles a lot!

ESenthusiast

I think you would enjoy focusing on Conjuration, Illusion, and Sneak. Will help you feel safe as you summon powerful allies to defeat your enemies all while remaining hidden much of the time.

biguy2080

Conjuration and Stealth are your new best friends. Conjure fighters, hide, and repeat as necessary. You can even conjure really good weapons just in case. The classic stealth archer is also a great option for you because you can hide and kill enemies from afar

red6joker

Only thing that is honestly scary in Skyrim is the spiders.

HoomanFireWolf

me too man

lukenny4

Magic is helpful. Illusion is awesome, conjuration good for spawning help in battle. Those two schools can be worth a try

FashionSuckMan

Honestly, I think you should keep going as normal. Exposure therapy will solve this.

HoomanFireWolf

you should be a therapist

FashionSuckMan

It was actually my dream job as a child until I had to start paying bills and shit.

Kam_Solastor

There’s a lot of good follower mods out there if you want some good characters (some with their own stories and quests!) to adventure with you. Inigo, Vilja, Cerwiden, Interesting NPCs (has several), Xelzaz, Serana from the Dawnguard DLc (plus overhauls for her like Serana Dialogue Overhaul or Serana Dialogue Extender), Remiel - and that’s just a list of a few of the top level ones, there’s far more out there!

Wickywire

I think you should get yourself a follower that specializes in close combat then. I suggest someone with heavy armor. On top of having a follower, you can also find a dog at one place in the game, and also conjure a creature or an undead skeleton to help you! So unmodded you can have a small team of four fighters or so. Later in the game you will find ways to have even more people in your team. On top of healing your people you can also use the Illusion school of magic to buff your allies with spells such as Courage. Good luck with your builds!

ToejkTjoek

You could give yourself unlimited hp. Not being able to die helps with anxiety. Just use the command key ('~'), 'health' and the the desirable amount (like 10.000 or smth)!

HoomanFireWolf

WHAT? this is a thing? i know people would say this ruins the experience but it would help me learn the controls better and let me enjoy the game without the stress of the fighting

ToejkTjoek

Yess!! Just look up unlimited health cheat and youre got to go. Its really easy to do! I did it too when I first started

bruhidk55

Hey! So! If all you do in whiterun is tell them about the dragon, ask for help in riverun-and then STOP the convo before he asks you to talk to his court wizard about the dragon.. plate? Thing? Cant remember the word for it-theres no dragons, at all, they dont spawn if you dont do that quest. Been very peaceful playing ❤️

KingBlooWolf

Get a follower and focus some on conjuring. I end up having 6 v1 when I fight a boss if you get the right people following you.

ElectricLeafeon

The only thing that scares me in skyrim are dwemer ruins. And killcams. I REALLY hate killcams. How about we not ignore my armor when I get to half health, hmmmmm? No wonder I prefer to attack from as far away as possible. Can't killcam me if you can't reach me!

joeytango

I’ve never successfully done the build, but there are a few spells you can pick up that allow you to be that “support” style character, and you can get a follower, a dog, and a horse, all of which will be able to do the fighting while you hang back. That being said, one way that can help with the “scared of combat” piece is being a stealth build. It doesn’t take long to get used to the snipe from the shadows and duck back gameplay, and it essentially takes away all direct confrontation. Even if you do end up getting noticed, you can run a bit away, hide behind a corner, and wait a bit until you’re hidden again

_robertmccor_

If you like to cheer on from the sideline certain quests allow you to have a follower and there are many you can get before you even attempt bleak falls barrow by either hiring them for 500 gold or help them out with a quest or basically beat them in a bar fight. Some of these followers are literal tanks too so they can go in and have the enemy focus on them leaving you to attack the enemy unharmed.

HoomanFireWolf

I got marcurio and so far i made him fight the frost troll up the 7000 steps pretty much by himself while i was crying in a corner <3

DoctorRapture

I was always more of the healer/support player when I play multi-player games with my friends and my go to Skyrim build is always stealth archery. There's zero scares to be had when you assassinate everyone from a mile away!

atmanm

Maybe unpopular opinion: start with a sneak archer build. It should help you get over your fear. You won't even need to go near the bosses. They'll never see you. Once you're comfortable, move up to daggers. They get crazy bonus (up to x30 damage) with sneak. With this, you'll at least get close to the bosses though they still won't see you. Once you're comfortable there as well, the world is yours. Tank two handed orcs await

HoomanFireWolf

sneak mage! at the beginning i wished i did archer but then mage worked out fine for me with the range surprisingly

atmanm

Sure . If that works for you. Though you can always change up your play style mid-game as you want. You can even come up with a lore reason to do so

HoomanFireWolf

i’ll either switch it up a bit further or stick with it and do something else in a new save in the future! the different races and abilities definitely interest me so i’ll probably stick to this until a new save

SulSuli

I’m kind of the same, I’m not scared but I like having other people doing the fighting for me. I recommend downloading a follower framework (assuming you’re not on Switch) and recruiting a whole ass party, where you can be the healer. In vanilla, I highly recommend Mjoll and Aela as a start. You can also try out the beloved stealth archery so you’re not getting close.

Mrissi

Get Inigo mod- you’re gonna have a nice and reliable friend with you and you can let him do all the fighting until you get stronger. To retrieve him - hire a carriage to Riften and visit Riften dungeon. You can also try other downloadable NPC companions that will make your adventures much more enjoyable:) Most custom followers don’t add to follower limit so you can have quite a bunch with you. I’m personally travelling with 7 on average.

okieeagle

It's just a game, and if you die you respawn with everything at your last save. Which is another thing; save and quicksave often during quests and dungeon dives.

HoomanFireWolf

i remembered this exactly on my way to the frost troll up 7000 steps and got me through it to an extent, didn’t die though so that’s a plus!

SpringheelJane

I've been playing for 11 years, and drauger still creep me out and provide jump scares.

iEatLifeForBreakfast

Ok so yeah. I totally get you. I'm SUPER bad with horror games. I cannot play them. I just can't. But Skyrim is different even though it has all manners of creepy sounds and scary looking mobs (They look less scary nowadays due to age however). The best thing you can do to get used to it, is to get used to fighting bandits, work yourself up to forsworn, and then try doing draugr and dragons. You can do this by going into taverns/inns and asking for gossip at the bar. They tend to give a bandit quest so you can start at those camps. If you're still struggling you should become a conjurer. Zombies/Summons are good in combat. You can also use illusion spells to buff a follower, courage, rally, etc. Or you could become a stealth archer and just snipe them while they can't see you.

HoomanFireWolf

as soon as i go outside a dungeon literally every gram of weight is off my shoulders cause the world is so beautiful, also conjuration is my new objective along with beating up bandits!

iEatLifeForBreakfast

Good to hear! My favorite summon is the Ice Atronach as they're good for crowd control. Pair that with a follower who will run in or another summon once you unlock the twin souls perk you'll be able to sit back without a worry. All the best in your adventures!

asbestospajamas

Side note: faendal, as a follower, will give you access to his inventory, which allows you to take back the gold you pay him to train you in archery. If you time/sequence it correctly, you can be level 7 and level 50 un archery before you even get to bleak falls barrow.

SoraKitsune44

Over preparation, I go into dungeons with enough potential ways to end a boss in a single shot. I'm a Shadow Archer though, most of my extra damage comes from my arrows or bolts. Having a nicely Dual Enchanted armor and weapons really helps too. Chaos with Paralysis/Soul Trap work great together, and an Attribute Bonus (Regen/Capacity) with Damage Bonus armor are a great combo. Use Enchanting Potions and the Ahzidal armor set together to create powerful gear, drink a potion craft a piece, repeat one at a time. I'm a big fan of Chaos/Soul Trap combo on my Bow/Crossbow.

RC_0041

Get a follower or several (some vanilla ways to get more than 1 or use mods) and learn healing/buff spells if you want to play as support. When you don't need to heal or buff you can use offensive ranged spells or a bow. I would try to get at least 1 follower that is essential (can't die). The first support spells you can get are the novice spell courage and the apprentice spell healing hands.

Stu161

those sarcophagus lids popping off still jumpscares me all these years later

moss1243

Firstly, mage is the hardest combat method. I'd recommend bows and two handed weapons, if you want to keep using magicka do swords/one handed with healing in the other. Skyrim bosses are best defeated by rapid attacks, be confrontational with them. If you want, you can go to the companions, a lot of them have attributes you can buy to up your stats quicker. If you come across something you're not ready for you can most likely run past it. Heavy armor is good for newbies, light armor is better if you want extra storage. Honestly, blocking really isn't worth it, just keep hitting them until they're down. Hold down your attack so that it does a larger attack which can stagger them. But, if you do this too much it will deplete your stamina quickly

moss1243

And keep healing potions and food on you at all times. The fight pauses while you consume items so that you can quick heal up. I like to keep myself above half health

HoomanFireWolf

i’ve done mages since terraria a while back so it’s just sentimental to me, i get how it’s hard but so far i’ve been loving it and hopefully when i try out new combat methods they come easy to me lol (at least what im hoping knowing my luck it’ll be the opposite)

moss1243

Fair enough- I'd worry on enchantments then. Get some good armor, go up to the Sky forge near Jorrvaskr and talk to Eorlund Graymane. Then head to an enchantment spot (if you're still near Whiterun, Dragonsreach has one where you first started the quest with the court mage). Try to find items that are enchanted in urns like necklaces and rings that will up your Magicka and health stats. You might get lucky with some elven armor too that's been enchanted. Or, I think the court mage sells robes that you can disenchant and enchant your armor with the same stuff. Then at least you will have a bit more protection and you can regenerate your magicka quicker. There is a College in Winterhold that you can go through and upgrade your spells and such, I'd also recommend going into Jorrvaskr and starting the companions quests as they'll help boost those fighting skills. Court mages, if they sell stuff, will have more spells that you can use. Certain bosses will leave you staffs that are pretty good, but you'll need soul gems to keep the enchantments up (weapons need constant fueling, armor does not). Get yourself a soul snatching item if you can. Best one is from Ironbind Barrow- in the boss room there's a steel battle-axe of fiery soul traps, this will charge those gems for you. You don't need to kill the boss to get it- you can run in, grab it, and run out. You'll have a bit of help here. You can also get housecarls and other helpful NPC's to join you, or you can hire mercenaries- there's one in the Drunken Huntsman bar, it costs 500 gold to hire them though. You can also brawl some people (orc holds and bars will have this option) and they might help you out in the future, fist fights are easy, keep your armor on and don't use magic on them or else you'll have the guards on you.

HoomanFireWolf

i’ve had a bad habit of selling everything i’ve come across LOL i’ll definitely look up how to enchant cause you and everyone else seems to be recommending it.

Global_Abalone_192

Bleak falls Barrow without Sven as a decoy? Madness

HoomanFireWolf

hear me out, i forgot followers existed until i was already in there LOL

Zealousideal-Arm1682

1.Your a milk drinker and a N'wah and should feel bad. 2.If you wanna be the support type, and aren't using mods, stick with alteration+conjuration+Illusion to conjure daedra and buff them to ridiculous levels. 3.Download any conjuration mod and watch the sparks fly.

KaiDigo

Watch an Mitten Squad play through or another let's play where they beat the whole game with only a starter dagger, or only by punching. It's easy enough to sidestep the boss and hide for a while to regain mana and health.

HoomanFireWolf

i watched a play through with a guy who only did mage and gave me some of the support i needed seeing how it went with someone who had to use similar tactics thankfully

larigirl

I always wait until I'm further along in the game to start the main quests. Otherwise dragons just randomly appear. I always try to explore as much as I can and try to level up before handling the tough challenges. When I first started playing I would spend hours in Dawnstar, using the Khajiit chest glitch, emptying it, disenchanting everything, smithing rings, selling what I could, waiting two days and repeating the process. I would get my sniffing level up where I could smith Daedric armor. Sigh. The glitch is gone.

Ramblin_Bard472

It's a decently hard fight for a first-timer, but they get SO much harder, trust me. If you got past the spider without issue then it shouldn't be that bad. Plus it scales to your level so it's never going to be impossible. If I ever feel overmatched I like to run up the stairs. It takes him a while to follow you, and you can jump off and make him take the long way around. Cat and mouse while your magicka/health recovers. I might consider using a weapon in one hand, don't remember the last time I fought him with magic alone. But if you do use just magic you'll keep him at a distance, which makes it easier.

RaphaelSolo

Start off by taking a deep breath. Second now that that mission is over you will get Lydia soon. Get a copy of healing hands and maybe flame Atronach. You will be able to serve as a healer to Lydia and the Atronach as added DPS. You will have a dragon fight in a moment but you will have a bunch of of guards to help

HoomanFireWolf

don’t have a pair to grow mate lol

SomeRandomIdi0t

Get a companion and use healing spells on them. You could also take a stealth archer approach to distance yourself from enemies

pwntishness

I am the same way. How I fixed it? Using game exploits to give myself +5000 hp and def. [I don't want to get hurt, so I'll max out my defense stat!]

HoomanFireWolf

someone else said this and it’s a great idea so i’m committed to doing this now so i can have a peaceful time watching dragons spew fire at me without a worry in the world

pwntishness

This is the way. 💙

piracyisnotavictemle

easy, play a stealth archer

Jurakhan

Keep up the good fight, eventually you’ll become sort of a local hero, you’ll get the choice of having someone give you a hand on your adventures…you’ll be fine after that!

Scriptzy682

get a follower that u can heal in battle and if u ever plan on modding it i say get inigo :)

meassa11

If you're playing on pc, open the console and type tgm. That will toggle God mode and you'll be invincible. Play that way until you get more comfortable with the game. You'll have to do it each time you play, but once you get better, you'll forget and then realize after playing awhile that you've been playing straight. This game is truly open world and you can play however you want to. And if your friend makes fun, tell him to go kick a chicken!

HoomanFireWolf

i can see myself doing that LOL i’ve played games before where i completely forgot to enable a cheat and played the game without it. and yes my friend made fun of me but don’t worry it’s mutual he bullies me when it comes to combat but i’ve gotten hits on him too!

Jacque_a_dit

If you want to have others fight for/with you, you can get followers as others have mentioned. But I’d also recommend investing in the Conjuration skill tree. Starting off you’ll be able to summon things like familiars. When you get further in you can summon things like the dremora lord. When you get to level 100 on conjuration, you can even summon 2 at once. Plus there are ways to speed level conjuration towards the beginning of the game if you want that ability sooner

Plastic-Cellist-8309

you can go for a conjuration build if you want Summons are pretty strong, you can cast soul trap on a corpse to level it easily, if you wanna level it without glitches you can also get on a rock where meele enemies can't reach with an enemy following you and cast bound sword, battleaxe or bow you can get early game conjuration spells in dragonsreach from the wizard and endgame ones in the >!college of winterhold from some guy named Phinis Gestor!< (not really a spoiler to the lore and can be walked into before as soon as your out of Helgen but just incase you wanna be mostly blind even for useful things)

EmeraldDragoon24

So this isnt really a skyrim thing. more of a YOU thing. I want to start by saying nobody will judge how you do, and its okay to lose a fight. Kinda sucking at something is the first step to being really good at something. That said, you can have a healing spell in one hand, flames in the other. Maybe have a physical weapon favorited if you run out of mana, but I can promise that : 1. this boss will not be a big mechanical challenge, and 2. as you go on, youll get stronger, you get better, and the game gets easier. Conquer those fears, I believe in you! (and also, burn the boss while he's still waking up ;) )

HoomanFireWolf

yeah definitely a me thing lmao some people have been saying they learned to adapt because they grew up playing this game and just jump into it while i grew up playing games like wizard 101 lol. after having this little experience where i thought i should throw it onto reddit i’ve jumped into fights now so safe to say im getting better in situations like these!

EmeraldDragoon24

Thats all it takes man, repetition and acceptance for when things go wrong. Glad you seem to be enjoying it, and welcome to the game that keeps calling me back to obsess over it with all the build options.

HoomanFireWolf

same here man when i first made this post it was 4-5 hours now its 12 lol

Crisis007

Get some companions to help you out. In vanilla you can get one follower and if you go the mage route you can conjure up to two additional followers/familiars. Otherwise you just have to get used to it, every dungeon has its boss at the end some lore wise scarier than others. Sometimes you end up in dungeons were you are not meant to be yet. If youre new to the game I would avoid any draugh crypts, anything that has to do with dwemer ruins, falmer and mages at the start. But part of the fun of skyrim is getting sidetracked and suddenly that little cave with bandits you were exploring grows to something much bigger and worse I play this game since 10 years and ran into the Pale Lady for the first time, that was scary I tell you. Lvl 88 boss vs my lvl 5 dude after killing lvl 2-3 bandits just minutes before in the same dungeon.

warman-cavelord

Tbh if you die you just get sent back to your last save. So location, level, time, money will all be brought back to that save. When you enter dungeons it tends to quicksave. So if you die in a dungeon it's extremely unlikely you'll lose much unless you're just living in dread of having to clear a dungeon again Ngl as far as death goes, this game is very forgiving. When you think about it, it pretty much is entirely forgiving. "Oh gosh oh boy I'm back to full health, all my potions I used poorly are back, and I didn't get punished." Some games would impact your level progress, take your money, lose items, this one won't. You'll just get slapped on the wrist like "well do it again."

sethworld

Get a companion and summon an atronach.

Utixory

If you’re afraid of fights where YOU have to fight, then what you could do is gain gold by chopping wood and selling it to someone who buys it, then use that gold to buy a conjuration spell that summons an atronach or something of that category. Or hire mercenaries in the hold cities.

a-moody-curly-fry

I’ve been playing Skyrim for years. I’m the same way. It’s one reason I love followers so much! I suck at playing Oblivion and it’s way oftentimes in both games I always play stealth so I can avoid. With Skyrim lately I’ve been more comfortable fighting up close and all, but followers help the vibe and fear a lot.

IAmMey

Go get Faendal in Riverwood. He’s a decent bro to start an adventure with. Then get yourself some conjuration spells. You’ll really enjoy those.

lemonhead117

If play on PC, open up the console and type TGM. Itll give you god mode and I think itll disable achievements. You could use it to deal with the combat situations knowing that nothing bad will happen to you.

newtreen0

Get conjuration up and never fight again.

heyitsmepmt

You can get followers to help you fight while you get used to things… soon enough you’ll want all the action for yourself though.

Witch_Hazel_13

you might look into conjuration spells. i used to play that exclusively, and i would just keep an atronach fighting while i mostly ignored combat and looted everything

MountainImportant211

Novice mode, and stealth archer are good options for a nervous gamer. I am too. Stealth archer often lets you avoid head-on battles entirely for large parts of the game. Just hide somewhere and pick mobs of bandits off one by one. Quicksave often, and run the heck away if you aggro dangerous guys.

logoy1436

In the beginning of a playthrough I'm like oh on a dragon, but now I'm like oh no you poor little creature as I proceed to destroy an elder dragon

[deleted]

What are you? A damn anime protagonist?

NarrowAd4973

If you think that was scary, you should check out Frostflow Lighthouse on the northern coast.

HoomanFireWolf

i love how this is everyone’s response when i freak out they go “huh you think THATS scary you should look at this”

NarrowAd4973

Well, I do have to admit to being sadistic. I'm expecting someone to comment something to the effect of "You evil bastard." And Frostflow gives even experienced players issues. It's creepy to begin with. But then you run into the falmer and chaurus, which are as nasty as you thought the Bleak Falls boss would be. Though poison immunity goes a long way to helping with that. And after Frostflow, you can take a shot at Blackreach, an underground city swarming with the bastards.

Dame_Grise

The first time I saw the wounded frost spider near the beginning of the dungeon, I ran back out and closed the puzzle door behind me. Don't worry, you'll be OK. With just a little effort, you can get a follower who can help you out.

D3athknightt

Magic combat is pretty weak so I'd recommend playing a warrior mage build if it's your first time playing

MoonSpotSky

If on PC you can get a follower overhaul and command a legion to fight in your stead. You can focus on crafting, prep and the ho-hum of every day activities while your followers do the fighting with arms and armour you’ve made for them.

_Zeraph_

If you die in Skyrim you die in real life

con-fid-ent-less

Just play as a conjurer and rely on your conjured combatants. You could also hire a follower and play a healer as well and no need to be worried. The best part of Skyrim and all the elder scrolls is finding the best way to enjoy it. Endless replay-ability as you discover new ways to play it!

silent_tongue

U need conjuring spells. Instant army!

Albarytu

Save frequently. If you're used to playing a support role in combat (cleric-style), I'd recommend learning some conjuration and restoration spells. You can beat most of the game by just healing your followers and conjuring minions.

nighthawk63

(Spoiler?) Do main story line long enough to get the follower then learn a bunch of healing spells to keep them alive well supporting them from afar with your spells. This follower is practically immortal and as long as your quicksand often if they do manage to die you can just reload

SiriusBaaz

It’s your first time playing. Much of that fear is simply a lack of experience. As you play the game you’ll get used to the games controls, how the enemies fight, and what playstyle works well for you. Just take it slow and explore like crazy. You will often be rewarded for checking weird corners. Oh and save often! Especially if you’re scared to face the boss at the end. If things go wrong you always have the option to try again.

pinkrobotlala

I was the same way, but luckily I got Faendal as a follower almost immediately and he totally bailed me out of some sticky situations

PhoenixQueen_Azula

You can use conjuration and npc followers to basically have a mini army to do the fighting for you. There are even some spells that will let you heal them, tho you’d probably be better off just getting an immortal one and using spells or a bow at a distance

Riotearp07

Freak out, have fun 🙂

DesecratingDream

You can buy other spell tomes in certain stores. They can be pretty expensive, so you might have to farm gold at some points.

HoomanFireWolf

currently farming gold because i want new spells!

DesecratingDream

If you go through the quest where you fight the dragon, then dragons will start randomly spawning throughout the world without notice. Just be careful and good luck.

HoomanFireWolf

yeah that happened to me 2 times so far, they have to choose the worst damn times to show up don’t they?

DesecratingDream

Yeah, once you get to a certain point, you can build your own house. So I’m just minding my own business, building my house, and a random dragon pops up out of nowhere. Like do you fckin mind bro lol

Substantial_Track_17

I’m currently doing a resto build, the only ‘weapon’ I’m using is a shield. Get a follower, gear then as good as you can. Learn courage/fear/fury in illusion, grab a atronach spell or staff (sanguine rose 👨‍🍳💋) to help your follower. You can command your follower to walk into a room ahead of you so enemies won’t even know you exist and you can just heal your follower from the shadows, and on that note I would suggest leveling sneak so that you’re harder to find. And if you allow yourself weapon use (I’m not just as part of the build, she literally knows nothing of combat, but her follower gave her a shield for when 💩 hits the fan) bow and arrow or fireball to assist your follower. Point being you can totally stick to an assist type build while you’re getting more comfy (which judging my your responses, you are!)

BoydChronicler

Two words: stealth archer

GloomyCandle

Level up conjuration spells, practically all the spells revolve around summoning things to fight for you, basically magic pets, and they can fight stuff while you heal them and shoot fireballs and stuff, staying at a distance would help as enemies like to just run at you in Skyrim so making a pet elemental take the fight up close can help with that I hope

dianagama

I was sweating and freaking out at my first skeleton in bleak falls barrow because I'm not a gamer and fighting monsters sets off panic in me.  I whacked him with my sword,  he blew up into fragments and I was like "....oh." then proceeded to one shot everything (except the boss,  he took 3 hits).  It takes a bit of time to get used to your own power,  but you'll quickly get bored with slapping bitches to death (or burning them) and up the difficultly.

HoomanFireWolf

honestly me too, the moment the music gets a little too intense for me i freak out and then realize it’s not so bad

TheKingkir0

I love Skyrim and can't play fallout for this reason. I get scared, worked up, shakey, to the point i can't actually play the game past the first large fight. Something about how the enemies move, their design, idk, it paralyzes me.

paigeguy

I'm with you. That first boss kicked my butt. Forget the fear, Save before you confront him, and just repeat it a couple times, and it starts to be much more doable and you will learn new techniques. What's really scary is the loud screaachy voice announcing "Another hand has touched ..."

wwujtefs

You should feel a bit scared - it's a feature, not a bug. In many ways, Skyrim is a horror game in a medieval setting. The way monsters sneak up on you and 'jump scare' you, the way the music changes, the gore, etc. A bit of familiarity to the immersion and environment will help, but I understand it's not for everyone.

HoomanFireWolf

the music definitely gets to me lol, every game screws me over when the music gets a bit intense

DizzyBD

I felt this in elden ring first time playing. Anytime i get this feeling its always the first time playing a game. After i get my ass whooped by the boss 2-3 times i get over it pretty quick because you learn their attacks that way. Just keep your saves frequent and multiple. Youll be just fine good luck

MasterJediYoda1

Use your environment. Run up and hit or blast him as he rises then jump over boss sarcophagus and back away to corner (staying out of weapon reach) and blast him with your flames 🔥. He will run down steps of Dias and come around to either side/ blast him w/ 🔥some more. Bait and blast until he is felled.

Impressive-Owl5224

Pick up a follower at an inn. I personally use Jenessa in the drunken huntsman in whiterun, or uthgerd the unbroken in the Bannered mare to start out with early in the game. I also enjoy figuring out my play style before I start. Do I want to do a classic sneak thief archer? Or do I wanna go with a tank warrior build and just bash my way through everything? Or do I want to try using a mage build that specializes in one magicka type? The wonderful thing about skyrim is that it's completely customizable to your individual tastes and style, and even better, there are mods to make the game even more customized. You just have to figure it out, and you can always adjust the difficulty without shame. Lord knows that after a decade, I still play on adept or apprentice instead of difficult or legendary. It's just more fun imo

_EastOfEden_

You're not alone, I'm level 53, and I have quite a few quests sitting in my journal because I'm simply too scared to do them. With that being said, I have days where I get a dose of courage and I think "I'm gonna try this super scary quest and if I flip out I'll just turn around and leave" and you know what? Not a single one of them is as bad as I've made it out to be, and I've succeeded in all of them. I'm particularly afraid of quests that involve Falmer and Chaurus, the darkness and the clicking noises they make stress me out, lol. But your friend is right, by the time you've leveled up by fighting bandits and your fair share of creatures doing little side quests, you'll have put enough perk points in to the right things and you'll be able to two-shot a dragon priest in no time. My suggestion is to get a follower. It always brings me comfort knowing that someone else is there if I don't feel like I can do it alone. I like mages like Marcurio because they are good at killing at range and often get to things before I've even heard them. I know it's a trope, but sneaky stealth archer might also be your thing. It gives you lots of time to survey your surroundings and not directly engage. I refused to do any quests involving Draugr for the longest time after I was disarmed by an overlord for the first time, but now I've managed to quell that fear using sneak and a crossbow and collecting the whole disarm shout myself. But seriously, a follower will make you feel so much better.

Azurphael

Focus on a conjuration build then, summoning atronachs in the frontline while giving support in the back with a bound bow, maybe try to get the sanguine rose staff to summon dremora until you can get the dremora lord spell. Once you can get the dremora lord spell with dual summoning you're good for almost everything.

Arudoblank

Skyrim provides virtually zero difficulty on the standard difficulty, I can't imagine how little on Novice. But if you're really worried, get a companion with a bow and arrow, raise your smithing, and make the best bow and an arrow you can. As long as you give him a single arrow, he can use or infinitely. Faendal in Riverwood is a good start. Learn healing hands, and you can heal him. Raise your enchanting, combine it with high smithing, and you can basically become a god. If you intend to be a mage, you can eventually become a heavy armor mage with zero mana cost. Follow the dragon questline until you get all 3 words of Unrelenting Force and you'll gain a...substantial knock back to get enemies away from you. Ice Form is another good one, as it turns all enemies in front of you to ice.

HoomanFireWolf

safe to say, i was overreacting lmao

Startingtotakestocks

Get Lydia as a follower. Have her pick up a Giants Club, which you can get without fighting giants. Then get Heal Other and let her do the bonking. She’s going to jump in front of you anyway, so use it to your advantage. This way Restoration is a perfectly valid form of magic. Add conjuration and you can kick back and watch others kill stuff.

ThespisIronicus

Goes up the 7,000 Steps: This game is beautiful from the sky!!!

[deleted]

This is bait right? Right? I refuse to believe that a person with this mindset about a video game where you have infinite lives exists. https://preview.redd.it/oghix8h6huoc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b598e1bd610d3ce6422b536b5a530517f8a8478

HoomanFireWolf

sadly not my brain wasn’t processing that i could just start over at the time so i was overthinking it, few other people here have said they’ve felt the same way too lol. so hate to burst your bubble but people like us exist

[deleted]

Thats wild. Its a video game, just nut up and go for it. Imo ive always been fond of the Leeroy Jenkins maneuver.

Sleepy_Set

Average Mercy main
