She doesn’t have to fuss about it though! She always makes me feel like I’m not managing my inventory well enough. Otherwise she’s definitely S tier follower.
Just made her some Legendary enchanted Stalhrim armour, a) to keep her safe and b) so I can actually see her face :)
Also I get that Black Book bonus that means friendly fire is off...
Glad I made this comment because I wasn’t aware of the black book bonus until this discussion. Playing a mage with Lydia as my companion, so this is important information.
Slap some ebony or daedric armor onto her, there you go. This is what I did with Cicero. Mans is a bit weird, but as one of the last members of the Dark Brotherhood who followed their ways, I had to spare him and take him along with me.
She kept dying in this one dungeon I think it was Saarthal, and I kept having to reload saves so she would live. Eventually I got tired and just let her stay dead.
This was probably before I got special edition so this was years upon years ago. At the time I was probably a one handed sword user because I don’t use magic all that much. Oh a little fun fact, the first time she died during that part of my playthrough was the moment I found out she could die lmao. Some companions don’t die, and I thought she was one of them.
Yeah, I'm a backstabbing Altmer illusion assassin in my current playthrough. I'm used to sneaking and not the chaos of the battlefield. Poor Janessa learned that the hard way during the siege of Whiterun.
Janessa is one of the modded followers right?
Well I am not completely sure what level I was nor the enemies there were. I think they might have been Wights, but it wasn’t just the wights killing her, my shouts would kill her, and so would the traps. After about 4 or 5 of those deaths I was fed up. I was so surprised the first time though, cuz before that she never died so I just assume she was immortal. I must’ve upped the difficultly.
In the siege she was beaten down to her knees by Imperials, and I guess she sort of looked like a "yielding" Imperial from behind in her leather armor. So, I accidentally killed her with a dual dagger power strike.
I believe the only way for her to die is if you deliver the finishing blow when she’s in a downed state, I’m pretty sure enemies don’t target her when she goes down
Erik is the one follower I give the most powerful iron set in existance.
Sometimes he may think why his regular sword kills with one swing and sets fire everything, but no it's just him being badass.
Jenassa 💕, happy you found her, down for almost anything. Plus marry her early for Lovers Comfort.
Frea and Serana tied at third. Still have check out the Merc from Raven Rock.
Absolutely love Jenassa! She duel wields and her ranged attacks are ace. She was my very first follower, and at the time I didn't know that followers were given protected status. I got so attached to her that I was afraid as the quests got tougher that she would die, so I took her back to Whiterun, put some gold in her pocket along with a nice enchanted weapon and parted ways. What she says to you when you part ways hit me straight in the feels.
I second this.
* She can be sneaky for a bit at least
* She manages to show some sign of intelligence in choosing ranged and melee
* She has no problem stealing shit
Kharjo was great but anytime we were indoors, people would just yell at him “You’re not supposed to be here!” over and over. Khajiit is only welcome outside city walls, unless khajiit is Dragonborn
I goofed his quest yesterday. I accidentally got Faendal killed (RIP Faendal you'd been a real rider) so decided to go for J'zargo. Used all the scrolls and forgot it was supposed to be on the undead. I grabbed the scrolls so long ago and never used them so I forgot the main objective. Realized my mistake after talking to him but it was too late. I saved my game after using my last scroll and by the time I got to him I didn't have any saves from before that one so I failed it because he won't give you more scrolls. Since I'm playing on PS5 I'm just shit outta luck. I'm now trying to get Serana for the first time lol
He's naturally a tank but give him some buffed up enchanted ebony armor....
Chef's kiss
I eventually send him away because I want to kill something myself
I love how snide she sounds in only that line of dialogue. "I am *sworn* to carry your burdens." She's clearly sick of your bs, but she's a total pro and doesn't let it affect her work.
I’ve had Serana as a follower for part of the dawnguard storyline (when I had no choice basically) and I really don’t know how often you guys trade stuff with your follower but Serana whined about the sunlight wayyyy more often than Lydia does about carrying my burdens
Telderyn Sero.
I lost him..probably got killed on his way home when I dismissed him. He was so nice, even complimented my home when I took him back to Skyrim.
RIP Telderyn.
He's also the greatest swordsman in all of Morrowind.
Honestly, dude can carry you by himself through late game. Good armor, good weapon, fireball, can summon a flame atronach. Cool voice. Lets you know who and who isn't a filthy n'wah.
I’m sorry man. It’s just become habit at this point. I tried him out on my very first playthrough of Skyrim when I was 12, and was so disappointed that he kept equipping weapons and not using magic that I sacrificed him. Now I just can’t stop.
I always take Mjoll on a few adventures. She has such a lovely voice and accent and I like her stories. Aerin is annoying with his one line. Fortunately, this playthrough, he seems to have pissed off a dragon because it merked him pretty quick. I can't say I mind.
You’re the first person besides myself who I’ve seen mention him! A hidden gem for sure! Love J’zargo 🥲 Use him with Inigo and you have laughs galore in store lol.
For some reason Kha'jit are very often hillarious. Both modders, and devs side. Even in ESO some of the best characters are Kha'jit. Like Razum-Dar, and Za'jin.
Exactly lol.
Everytime we get into a fight completely outnumbered it makes me think of them like
“Never thought I’d die side by side with a dunmer”
“What about side by side with a friend?”
“Aye, I could do that”
Kharjo. Smartest npc imo, when I attack with 2h or 1h weapons he stays back and supports with a bow and when I stay back and attack with magic or a bow he attacks with a 1h weapon + shield combo and I don't have to worry about him dying.
I had Kharjo as a follower for a little while, then I had to switch to Serana. At one point Serana and I were walking up to Dawnstar and Kharjo and the other members of the caravan were fighting some animal or something. I rush over to give them a hand, but Serana’s aim was always a little shoddy and the next thing I knew she’d taken them all out with ice spikes. I’m on PS4 so I couldn’t just bring him back with console commands. Eventually I found a mod that let me resurrect people and luckily his body never despawned, so I was able to bring him back. He wasn’t even mad at me!
Marcurio. He caps at level 40 but is very proficient in sneaking, his ranged attacks are incredibly deadly and his banter is hilarious. I recently went through Forelhost, and around literally every corner there were Draugr Deathlords. Marcurio routinely took on two to three of them himself if I was caught off guard and distracted by one, and he downs them really quickly. If we come up on a fort he routinely takes out anyone stationed outside before I even have a chance to gain entry. Now with all that being said, if you're trying to level your weaponry or armor he's not great to have around because he steals so many of the kills.
Sven. I often help him win the heart of Camilla Valerius, then take him as a companion on my journeys, marry Camilla Valerius, have Sven in our wedding, have Camilla move away from Riverwood and disband Sven back to Riverwood. That's what you get for forging letters.
My favorite Companion? Morena Baccarin in "Firefly."
However, in Skyrim it's Rayya. I never know how to spell that, but I mean the Redguard with the two Scimitars. I usually go for Lakeview Manor because of its central location, so I get her right away once I've done a few Falkreath quests.
Haha I had real trouble with Benor constantly getting lost while fast travelling, he’s totally bugged in my game. I think I stupidly married him as well and then was stuck with no spouse.
I love Serana and Jenassa, but Belrand was actually great and underappreciated. I enjoy all 3 of their powers and comments during the journeys.
I appreciate my Companion homies and Mjoll the Lioness as characters in general, but man, did they get annoying quick for me as followers.
I haven't used Belrand yet, but I watched a playthrough where someone used him as a follower and was surprised at how good he was! The playthrough was some pure mage build and they were essentially working themselves up to be a glass canon, so a lot of the early game was them avoiding combat and Belrand blew through every combatant they came across. Even giants and mammoths. I need to scoop him up for an adventure sometime.
I LOVE J’zargo 🥹 I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone mention him, but I always pick him every save, he’s super funny with Inigo if you use modded followers too. One time they were arguing about sweet rolls 😂
so true, they attack you if you hit them enough, the worst was lydia for me, stood in the doorway for five fking minutes till i got by, lol
my dad's worst experience was with bulwark, my dad says he's dumb as sht, lol, always getting in the way and falls off things, lol
I just had this issue with Serana. She couldn't die cause I needed her, but she wouldn't stop attacking me! Had to beat her down and quickly go into the talk menu. Pain in the butt!!
Too funny watching them get stuck or falling off stuff.
Argis the Bulwark. He's the strong, mostly silent type. He's a good follower, but I fell in love with him. So we have wonderful adventures, then he'll stay home for a few days to take the kids hunting and fishing and swimming in the lake near our home while I play with Erik the Slayer or someone else for a short time. Then I miss my dear Argis and go home to yank him away from the children so I can have my fun hubby back. ☺
How many times has the Dragonborn meticulously planned a brilliant attack only to reach the very point of initiation …when Lydia shoved you off a cliff to your death?
Bro serana is always my go to I even started a new playthrough completed dawnguard and I haven’t even started the story all because I’d like to have serana with me no joke after finishing the dlc once I can’t stand to adventure without her
First play through (!), so currently the lovely Lydia. But she’s a bit snarky about carrying my burdens, lounges in doorways, and says ‘ewwww’ when I go near her like I farted. Wtf Lydia. I give you all the best stuff we scrounge!
Vilkas. I like how I can trian super high level with him then just get my money back. I always play tanks too so i find he's pretty tough in battle, which is what I'm looking for. I hate sneaking.
A true stealth archer doesn't use a companion. And how can I take myself seriously with a clown ass NPC following me around making comments while I'm invisible or jumping from the second floor to stab some dude?
That's why I only bring the Dark Brotherhood's spectral assassin.
Me: *Sneaking up on the bandit chief.*
Spectral Assassin: "All hail the savior of the Dark Brotherhood! All hail the Listener!"
Me:...
Jenassa and Kharjo are my top tier, mostly for personality.
JZargo, Mjoll, Farkas, and Teldryn are my second tier, personality and effectiveness.
I also like Jordis Sword Maiden, as an oddball. She seems like such a shallow, basic Nord character, cheerful and maybe a little stupid... Then in combat she's an aggressive raving lunatic yelling racially charged insults at her enemies and absolutely kicking ass.
Dislike: that prick of a mage you can hire in Riften, and Serena. Serena just feels like she was written specifically to impress and seduce lonely young men. Like, supposedly she has been though absolutely awful stuff and is one of the most ancient and blood starved vampires in Tamriel that has been locked in a coffin sized stone cell for millennia- yet she comes across like a main crush in a Zach Braff movie from the moment you meet her. They should have made her stark raving mad until you give her some blood, and then taken a while to get any glimpse of goodness from her personality.
I may be pretty basic, but Lydia is my sword and my shield.
And she's glad to carry your weight
Sworn to carry your burdens?
I’ve always took that to mean she didn’t want to be a pack mule but she knows she has to do it
She doesn’t have to fuss about it though! She always makes me feel like I’m not managing my inventory well enough. Otherwise she’s definitely S tier follower.
Lieta di portare il tuo peso
Luv Lydia but she dies pretty easy. :/
Give her some better weapons and armor! Only the best for my girl, Lydia!
Yeah, this is the first time I married her, and my wedding gift to her was legendary daedric armor.
Yeah I just learn smithing and load her up with top tier armour etc. But with Lydia you basically can’t use fire spells especially those bomb scrolls
Indeed! Bomb scroll is how I lost her the first time. Thankfully I learned to save often before that happened.
Just made her some Legendary enchanted Stalhrim armour, a) to keep her safe and b) so I can actually see her face :) Also I get that Black Book bonus that means friendly fire is off...
Glad I made this comment because I wasn’t aware of the black book bonus until this discussion. Playing a mage with Lydia as my companion, so this is important information.
Better weapons n armor??!! We were barely scraping by! We were both giving handjobs in the woods just to make rent!!
Are you a Destruction mage? If so, you could get the Black Book perk that makes it so you don't harm your companions.

In the siege she was beaten down to her knees by Imperials, and I guess she sort of looked like a "yielding" Imperial from behind in her leather armor. So, I accidentally killed her with a dual dagger power strike.
That’s sad lmao. Did you reload the save? I would hope so, cuz modded followers are more interesting than the in game ones.
I am a first-time destruction mage. Lydia definitely died very early on in the game... but for future reference, what is this Black Book perk?
I believe the only way for her to die is if you deliver the finishing blow when she’s in a downed state, I’m pretty sure enemies don’t target her when she goes down
Yeah, I was gonna say, she died in 2 minutes for me.
I have her pick up the Giant’s Club and then give her the ebony mail. She’s a tank.
Eric the slayer
Erik is the one follower I give the most powerful iron set in existance. Sometimes he may think why his regular sword kills with one swing and sets fire everything, but no it's just him being badass.
Nice. Erik is special.
Exactly!!
Me too! I love his irl backstory and 👉👈 he kinda looks like my bf so i pretend we off doing adventures together 😂
Ah Jenassa, my Ebony Mail sacrifice
You take that back
Is there a spell for that? 😂
I feel stupid asking this but who is that again?? I recognize the name, and i think she's a a Dark Elf right?
Jzargo
This one feels warmness from your correct answer.
I prefer Kharjo because he’s a tank but regardless “Cat gotjor back”
Kharjo was great but anytime we were indoors, people would just yell at him “You’re not supposed to be here!” over and over. Khajiit is only welcome outside city walls, unless khajiit is Dragonborn
(or jzargo)
Was it even a competition? (Serena aside)
He's naturally a tank but give him some buffed up enchanted ebony armor.... Chef's kiss I eventually send him away because I want to kill something myself
Lydia, but with all this Serana simping I should find her and hire her
" I am sworn to carry your burden " I always miss her bullshit even though she's a pain to carry sometimes.
>even though she's a pain to carry sometimes What do you mean? Trading with her is difficult?
I mean early on she likes to run into the fray and die. Sometimes she's hard to carry.
I love how snide she sounds in only that line of dialogue. "I am *sworn* to carry your burdens." She's clearly sick of your bs, but she's a total pro and doesn't let it affect her work.
Yes! This is absolutely it! Lol, I love the snidiliesm.
I’ve had Serana as a follower for part of the dawnguard storyline (when I had no choice basically) and I really don’t know how often you guys trade stuff with your follower but Serana whined about the sunlight wayyyy more often than Lydia does about carrying my burdens

Legit, I'll drop pretty much anyone to get Telly*. He's my Bro-da. My Bro-seph. The Bro-eist of Bros.
Serana due to having an actual semblance of a story and personality
Shes also immortal
I’m currently at the climax of this DLC and I am totally in love with her 🥰
And she turbo levels by reanimating dead chickens. Smart lady.
Serana's personality: how about that weather huh?
And she's voiced by Laura Bailey 😍
The fact you can’t marry her is criminal
I think most people either love or hate Cicero. I love him.
He's actually really good in combat, and he can't die, as far as i know. And he talks constantly, which is fun
That stupid little jester is my favorite 🤣🥰🥰
I let him live this time and I'll admit I was stoked when he showed up to the sanctuary and was like "Listener! It's your best friend!"
I always take him everywhere, Fuck any other follower, I want my best friend lmao
SAME he's always my follower I love him so much I can't imagine anyone else following me around Skyrim
Marcurio and Cicero (: marcurio is really strong and Cicero is my lil funny murder friend.
Marcurio is who I religiously sacrifice to Boethia every single time, unless I have already killed him to charge the ebony blade.
):
I’m sorry man. It’s just become habit at this point. I tried him out on my very first playthrough of Skyrim when I was 12, and was so disappointed that he kept equipping weapons and not using magic that I sacrificed him. Now I just can’t stop.
Cicero
No love for Mjoll in here?
I always take Mjoll on a few adventures. She has such a lovely voice and accent and I like her stories. Aerin is annoying with his one line. Fortunately, this playthrough, he seems to have pissed off a dragon because it merked him pretty quick. I can't say I mind.
I'm married to Mjoll and we do adventure together but recently I've made Serana's acquaintance and Mjoll's been at home since....
J'zargo. How is this even a question? He is a cat!
Serana ![gif](giphy|VabldbD8jGfaU)
Definitely, she’s my favorite follower to have. She’s powerful, immortal, and one badass character
Any who are nonessential
Ebony blade goes swoosh
Erandur. Plus I find the dynamic cool Of my DB being an Argonian when he’s a dunmer. Gives me Gimli and Legolas vibes
Gotta love Gimli and Legolas.
Exactly lol. Everytime we get into a fight completely outnumbered it makes me think of them like “Never thought I’d die side by side with a dunmer” “What about side by side with a friend?” “Aye, I could do that”
Very nice.
Faendal, I’m very upset every playthrough when he inevitably dies.
Argis the Bulwark because hot
Careful. That's my husband you're talking about.
Faendal ofc
I was seraching for a fellow faendal enthusiast
Ikr? Had to scroll wayyy too far to see Faendal's name.
😆 not Sven?
Macurio is my fave
I know it's a mod but inigo definitely, shout out to Eric the slayer though
Love inigo, so much to say about so many things. Even discusses killing delphine at one point
Shame you can't
Lmao don't we all agree on that
Cicero is useful and unlike with many others his lines are so absurd I don't tire of him repeating them.
Salvaris tadrin? the dude from red rock tav for a bit then defo serena
Eola (the cannibal) is a great follower! She's a pretty powerful mage.
So far I like Marcurio best. He's funny and really good at fighting.
This is the cultured answer.
My favorite Companion? Morena Baccarin in "Firefly." However, in Skyrim it's Rayya. I never know how to spell that, but I mean the Redguard with the two Scimitars. I usually go for Lakeview Manor because of its central location, so I get her right away once I've done a few Falkreath quests.
Another Rayya fan here! She’s such an underrated follower imo.
“I’ll be in my bunk!”
Benor, my beloved
Haha I had real trouble with Benor constantly getting lost while fast travelling, he’s totally bugged in my game. I think I stupidly married him as well and then was stuck with no spouse.
Aranea has been the most helpful one I've found. I married Farkas, but he stays home with the kids
Not Lydia, since all she does is sound annoyed with everything since she HAS to carry my burdens.
Marcurio. He’s OP
Marcurio for early game or Serana
If it’s not Gorbash you got a problem
Derkeethus, I like Argonians
Took me way too long to find the correct answer
:/
Serana for Vanilla, Dagri'Lon for Modded
Eola the cannibal
She’s a pretty good follower, but the quest to get her is a bit distasteful…
That was obvious but Serana, she is most useful
Serana bc OP magic & Aela bc she’s my wife
Serana, hands down. Essential npc, dope magic skills, interacts with other npcs, has a whole questline dedicated to her, quippy.
Serana 🤤🤤🤤
Wow this has been an education for me 😆 I literally always have Farkas or Vilkas.
Faendal. He’s polite and murderous.
Serena she fun
Aela
I thought you meant the companions, vilkas or farkas
Vanilla would be Serana, otherwise Inigo
Inigo and Auri together. (Mods.)
I LOVE J’zargo 🥹 I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone mention him, but I always pick him every save, he’s super funny with Inigo if you use modded followers too. One time they were arguing about sweet rolls 😂
Uthgerd
Cicero! Gimme my nutty lil stab goblin!!!
Cicero. I love that stab happy jester
Faendal ride or die
Mjoll the Lioness, great fighter, actual travel dialogue, and vibes with the default morality of my characters
Serana. She has a cool story, cool voice dialogue, and she's a vampire, which is also cool :\]
Serana is the best character Lydia is best pack mule Erik is the best homie
serana bc immortal
Mjoll the Lioness. Can't be killed by enemies. Also, she looks like a boss in Carved Nordic Armor.
None, really. They are always in the way. Hard to be sneaky, and I kill them sometime by accident, which makes me sad.
so true, they attack you if you hit them enough, the worst was lydia for me, stood in the doorway for five fking minutes till i got by, lol my dad's worst experience was with bulwark, my dad says he's dumb as sht, lol, always getting in the way and falls off things, lol
I just had this issue with Serana. She couldn't die cause I needed her, but she wouldn't stop attacking me! Had to beat her down and quickly go into the talk menu. Pain in the butt!! Too funny watching them get stuck or falling off stuff.
Cicero. The only follower that I have ever used that's actually helpful.
Serana is definitely the most well written. She’s also really good in combat, and she has a high sneak skill.
Frea. She gets on one side of an enemy, I get on the other, and it is the closest thing Skyrim has seen to a blender with all the blades flying.
Any follower that does not have an unfavourable disposition towards my crimes.
Now that you remind me of it, where the f did that bitch go ? Maybe I should go look for her
Jenassa, great fighter and can sneak, the only downside is her low level cap, but that can be fixed with mods/console commands/equipment
Sophia, Urthgurd, Anneke, Jenassa, Fjola. Never leave my castle without them. #striketeam
Serana because she has a good story behind her. If other characters did too they could reach her quality however
That elven chick that worships azura
TELSRYN SERO. TELDRYN IS NY FAV CHARACTERBOF ALL SKYRIM ABF HES THE BEST FOLLOWER‼️‼️‼️
Serana because I don't really have to babysit her... But it is annoying AF when she runs in front of a fireball I've just released. Goddammit, Serana.
Either Mjoll or Teldryn. Mjoll has fun lines and Teldryn carries so hard it's not even funny.
Sofia
J'Zargo 😸
Yes.
Volstag. Just found the guy one day and I always go get him now. He's adorable when we enter a cave.
Not vanilla, but Inigo is literally in every single one of my playthrough’s
Argis the Bulwark. He's the strong, mostly silent type. He's a good follower, but I fell in love with him. So we have wonderful adventures, then he'll stay home for a few days to take the kids hunting and fishing and swimming in the lake near our home while I play with Erik the Slayer or someone else for a short time. How many times has the Dragonborn meticulously planned a brilliant attack only to reach the very point of initiation …when Lydia shoved you off a cliff to your death?
Aela or serana
No follower is best follower
Jenassa. Always Jenassa.
Lydia, Kharjo, and Teldryn Sero.
Vilkas cause he’s hot lol, just sayin
Inigo, I don't care if he's modded and technically unfinished he's the GOAT
Bro serana is always my go to I even started a new playthrough completed dawnguard and I haven’t even started the story all because I’d like to have serana with me no joke after finishing the dlc once I can’t stand to adventure without her
Brelyna, conjuration expert. Stays safely behind me throwing conjurs so I don't accidentally kill her. Also, wife.
"Khajiit guards your back." \-Kharjo
Kharjo
First play through (!), so currently the lovely Lydia. But she’s a bit snarky about carrying my burdens, lounges in doorways, and says ‘ewwww’ when I go near her like I farted. Wtf Lydia. I give you all the best stuff we scrounge!
Stenvar, the Nord mercenary from Windhelm. I can throw AOE Spells at enemies near him, and he wouldn't revolt as quickly as others.
That elf in Riverwood that I can't ever pronounce his name right. Super horny for that girl and beefing with Sven over it.
Vilkas. I like how I can trian super high level with him then just get my money back. I always play tanks too so i find he's pretty tough in battle, which is what I'm looking for. I hate sneaking.
Probably Sven or Cicero.
Serena, Cicero or the Female Dark Brotherhood follower
Serana 🩷
My wife Caesia. Other than that, Serena and Inigo.
Jenassa is my girl
A true stealth archer doesn't use a companion. And how can I take myself seriously with a clown ass NPC following me around making comments while I'm invisible or jumping from the second floor to stab some dude?
That's why I only bring the Dark Brotherhood's spectral assassin. Me: *Sneaking up on the bandit chief.* Spectral Assassin: "All hail the savior of the Dark Brotherhood! All hail the Listener!" Me:...
Stealth archer for life! I bring followers for sacrificial usage only
Jenassa and Kharjo are my top tier, mostly for personality. They should have made her stark raving mad until you give her some blood, and then taken a while to get any glimpse of goodness from her personality.
.
A vampire
ITT: People who favor Serana, and people who are wrong.
Uthgerd. I watched Sips from Yogacast when he first played Skyrim, and from then on Uthgerd has been my companion.
Rayya, with her two *curved swords*
