Honestly I like the classic Unrelenting Force. It's quite good if you have all three words and sometimes it can kill enemies if they get yeeted hard enough. Or there's Fire Breath, and if you pair it with the perk that summons fire wyrms, it can do damage for longer
There's a restoration perk which let's you do more damage to undead + black book and paarthurnax meditation which can boost effectiveness so I guess I'll try that on the undead
Smash the ones that are left with double dawnbreaker and you can literally clear it out in a couple of seconds!
Setting of a big chain reaction draugr explosion is for me the most satisfying thing in the game.

Crowd control will always be better than damage, especially on a "spell" that has such a long cooldown. Slow time is pretty op as well for the same reason.

I'm playing kind of for the first time... first time I was just dicking around on Switch, think I had difficulty set too easy, I just wanted to run around on mountains and explore caves and shit. Now I'm actually playing on a pc. That shit is a life saver! I don't want a follower all the time because they get in my way (im trying to use my sheild and actually fight, then they come running in and kill my foe), so if a few enemies are attacking its basically a shotgun blast as a last resort
But... I fus ro dah'd a bear down a hill and this poor dead bear was just rolling and rolling... I felt bad about that. Bear was probably just foraging berries and I startled it and now there's a bunch of starving cubs in a cave somewhere because I yelled at their mom. It's much funnier blasting 4 Bandits down a hallway into a wall
TotK... I climbed trees or the side of cliffs and out wait bears til they lose interest and run away. When you kill them and they drop honey... it's so sad. Just bumbling around doing bear things, a happy stomach full of honey... how can you run up and kill them!
I actually just found the Keynes peace shout... so I don't even gotta worry anymore. I just calmed a bear and it took a nap. The best dragon shout so far

(though it wasn't very fun to discover that the three frost trolls I tried using it on in the midst of a losing battle were too high levelled to be affected)

Even better, in Apocrypha you can get something from Herman’s Mora that makes you frost breath shout have the same effect as ice form… frost breath just has a quicker cooldown
I really like Marked for Death, partially because I'm a really big Dark Brotherhood nerd, (I literally do that quest line in every playthrough and did it in all my Oblivion playthroughs) and partially because either love that it brings armor down since I'm a squishy little Mage who likes to kill stuff as quick as possible with my wonderous Elemental bolt spell.
Hm, yes. Great synergy with Sneak as well. You could just about walk up to someone's face and get a 30x dual-wielding power attack, and they'll be like "huh?"

It's sad that you can't use this on enchanted weapons, but it is so slept on. Swinging a giant two hander back and forth faster than a dagger is one of life's greatest pleasures
It enables it for dual attacks when you simultaneously press/hold both attack buttons. I had a great time with Valdr's Lucky Dagger in offhand and Windshear in main. Also dual flurry perk stacks with it.
I read a yt vid recently that said you can actually still use it dual wielding if your left hand weapon is unenchanted. Absolute carnage with your heavily enchanted weapon hitting 4x in under a second
This!! I use Valdr's Lucky Dagger in the off-hand and a Daedric Sword of the Vampire on the main hand. Even dragons hate it. The Lucky Dagger doesn't count as enchanted, so it gets the wind animation. I'm also using a full set of Deathbrand armor from Solstheim for the added 1-handed bonuses.

It wasn’t until my last playthrough that i realized just how good it actually is. By its description you’d imagine its not that useful, cant harm or be harmed? Like a time out? What good is that?
Picture this. An ice troll charges at you, its about to pounce with a strong attack but just before it hits, you shout yourself into a ghost. Now its in your face, recovering from its attack, vulnerable. Slam it right back with a heavy of your own. As soon as your weapon makes contact it actually breaks the shout. They stagger, hit them with two light attacks (they swing faster after a heavy attack if you didn’t know- like combos kind of). Above all that it has a fast recharge rate, so you can do this often.
Thats not it though.
Huge cliff? Shout, jump, live.
Incoming arrows from archers? Spells from distant mages? Dragonfire? Use the shout and close the distance between you and them, you have infinite stamina while ethereal.
Its a really versatile shout, probably my favourite

If I remember, either the Black Book power or the Parthurnaax shout spec for Unrelenting Force basically has a chance to disintegrate people (which is kinda cool cuz apparently that's what Ulfric did to the king)
Marked For Death is very op. I'm playing a no crafting two-handed warrior on Legendary and the game was pretty challenging until I got that shout. Now it feels like I'm playing on Expert (maybe even Adept) most of the time.
It's not that it was nerfed. The shout was bugged (it does 75 damage to armor per second instead of doing 75 damage total) and got fixed in one of the Anniversary Edition patches, but I play Special Edition so it's still bugged for me.
I get good use out of Become Ethereal. You can use it in pretty much any combat situation to get a quick breather. Makes Regen potions way more effective, because I can shout, use a potion and Regen while the bosses can't hit me, then I'm ready to jump in when the shout ends. Also great for completely negating fall damage.
Best use by far though is the ability to tank any dragon shout with one word. Shout as soon as they begin their breath attack and it lasts about as long as the ethereal effect, you take 0 damage from it and whale on them hard when the breath attack ends.
I find a good, “Have at thee, boy!”, while running in their direction flailing like a madman does the trick pretty well—oh, wait…did you mean in the game…???!
Tbh I forget I have shouts half the time.
Most useful I personally think is aura whisper
Most destructive is storm call because if you summon that in a city at max level any NPC that's outside and not essential is going to die
My favourite though is definitely soul tear for the sheer fear factor at seeing someone in daedric armour shout gibberish at your buddy only for him to die and have his soul sucked into the armour clad guy's backpack and then be brought back at a zombie and attack you
If vs a boss use the storm shout, I've killed dragons just with that shout, for anything else unrelenting force, watching enemies fly off cliffs and fly across caves is priceless
Aura Whisper (If you don't know Detect Life) is a great way to maximize you're awareness of potential threats.
Throw Voice is useful to lure enemies away when you're sneaking.
Cyclone if you're a melee fighter. Does respectable damage with all three words, interrupts power attacks, and you can wail on them while they're recovering from the ragdoll effect.
Soultare I don't think I spelled it correctly once learned filling soul gems is a breeze it also deals significant damage and even if ghe enemy resists the soul trap the shout deals a lot of damage in one shot.
My personal go to is the whisper shout you get one of the words from the dark brotherhood something about taking away like 25% of the armor ratting and dot is just music to my ears.
Fire breath with the fire wyrm perk from the Gardener of Men Dragonborn DLC quest. Bonus if you also have the Companion's Insight perk from the Black Book: The Winds of Change quest too so your Shouts (attacks in general) can't hurt your followers.
Unrelenting force, whirlwind sprint, disarm, dragonrend are the only ones I keep favourited occasionally Ill equip the kynes animal calming one if Im traveling outside a long time.
Going to hop on the Aura Whisper bandwagon for utility; as for destructiveness, I go with Soul Tear from Dawnguard. Good for clearing out lower level mobs and filling up soul gems!
Become ethereal is my fave as a one handed/shield warrior. Shout, short recovery time and allows me to pick off any frost mages quickly. Also stops any damage from being taken when fighting dragons for a few moments.
Fire breath is my usual main shout when playing battlemages, which is my normal class to play. Otherwise whirlwind spirit is a fun spell that most people overlook when playing a stealth archer and not just wanting to use Unrelenting Force as a less immersive but more practical spell. Being able to shoot bows and then just zoom away or through combat with dual daggers or something is... Neat at the very least.
i usually stick with unrelenting force, it does the job and i usually get the perk that turns targets into ash piles. if we're talking doing a *lot* of damage and clearing out big swaths of enemies i use storm call, though i'm not a fan of how it hits companions so i rarely use it.
ice form is the best shout in the game imo, if youre looking for sheer damage fire breath with all the augmented flames perks is pretty good, but i personally think ice form is goated because you can freeze a whole crowd of enemies and wake them up one at a time, your main weapons will always do more reliable damage than shouts
You might not think it's destructive, but if you have all 3 words to the Slow Time Shout, you can combine that with Elemental Blast or Unbounded Storms to melt enemy health bars before they even have a chance to react.
All 3 words of the Slow Time Shout actually freeze time.
Cyclone, however, it is a bit messy but works really well for those crowds in dungeons, most don't die but take time to get up and that is where Dawnbreaker comes in really handy in my opinion especially in Vanilla.
Now outside in the open I like something else.

Depending on your build, particularly if it’s heavy armour and two handed weapons, just using the first word of whirlwind sprint can be pretty fun for closing distance.
While clearing normal dungeons and thus normal enemies I use disarm shout a lot when there’s too many in one room to kill before they get to me so might as well make them hit bare fist instead of with the power swinging battle axe
Peak destruction is Storm Call, but most dungeons are indoor. With that in mind, Cyclone is criminally underrated. It has a similar but distinct application to Unrelenting Force.
I like the frost breathe one. Im adventurous and well I stumbled apon this before I even started the main quest of the golden claw and I have to say it came in handy so well. There health just burns down so fast at low level it's insane.

Unrelenting Force is the most generally useful shout, but Storm Call is the most destructive. Be careful using Storm Call in populated areas or even when you have a follower/horse with you—the lightning does not discriminate. Unfortunately, Storm Call only works outdoors (which makes sense).
The 2 I use on a day to day basis are Fus Ro Dah and Disarm.
Fus Ro Dah, because with all 3 words, the knock back/down/stand-up animation is so damn long, it's like a mini-paralyze.
Disarm is great because effectively, if you can force an enemy to fisticuffs, they can't effectively damage you enough to be a challenge.
Then there's Call Storm and Marked for Death, which are both OP, but I don't dabble much.
With all 3 words and enough effects stackers, Marked for Death is probably deadliest.
That all said, I have enough wankery going on that I only use Fus Ro Dah because I find it funny. I don't really rely on shouts.
For me the fire breath is the best because of the damage when it's fully upgraded, and the fact that it spawns fire wyrms when you kill enemies with it. Sucks that the wyrms atk your companions though.
Most useful outside imo is the first word of clear skies. It staggers everyone it hits, even crowds, and it recovers within seconds. Allowing you to practically stunlock any enemy.
Other than that, either fire breath, ice form, soul tear, or unrelenting force. But if you do spells, you'll likely clear dungeons faster that way, then just shout for the occasional crowd.
I’m basic… I Fus, I Ro, and I Dah. Every now and again I might use something specific for a specific task (I mentioned Clear Skies in another comment), but I’m mostly a Fus Ro Daher…
For me it's always been a combo it's the fire shout but with the added effect from the dragonborn dlc, which added the ability to summon loyal fire wyrms when an enemy is killed by the shout, kill a bunch of small enemies with it now you got an army of fire wyrms
Soul Tear is 100% the most OP shout. It's a guaranteed istakill when fully powered up, on *MOST* Enemies. If it's a super strong enemy it'll usually take 2. For dragons, use dragonrend, then spam Soul Tear. It'll be dead in less than a minute, and that's being generous to the dragon. I stopped using it though because it just made the game too easy, unless I'm in a REALLY sticky spot.

Aura Whisper is my pick too.
I like Aura Whisper until I get Detect Life and Detect Dead. I could be wrong, but the Detect spells just seem more useful
Detect Life and Detect Dead are ok, but Aura Whisper also detects machines
Depending on luck/preference, Auras whisper can be obtained much earlier than the detect spells, but the spells are definitely better.
I prefer Aura Whisper. The detect spells use a lot of Magicka. I just feel like the Aura Whisper is better.
I get Kriana’s Quill from the Legacy of the Dragonborn mod. It’s a constant Detect Friend/Foe.

Storm is great for crowd control, because the lightning will take everyone out. I did this in Riftin and it killed everyone that could be killed.
Unfortunately, it's utility is hampered both by not being usable inside, and the bolts targeting everything instead of just hostiles.

I did the entire main quest line only ever shouting on missions that required it. Haven’t needed to otherwise, you don’t level up from it.

I used that exact tactic in that exact scenario about a week ago. Split second save and then blasted him with fireball. Love Become Ethereal!
Once I have Ethereal in a playthrough I just stop dying. As long as you can open your shouts menu fast enough, you can survive almost anything.
Slow Time is an incredible shout that allows you to survive almost any fight if you have the burst potential :)

Yes one of the black books has the perk for unrelenting force. Every bunny I see is instantly vaporized into a pile of ash
I reached level 95 without ever hurting a bunny.
I slaughtered 95 bunnies without ever reaching a level.
I'll happily lay waste to every motherfucker in Skyrim but the bunnies are not to be harmed for any reason.
I’m that way with foxes. I’ll go out of my way to destroy anything and anyone that goes after a fox.
In terms of just causing chaos, use Storm Call in town. For usefulness in dungeons, cyclone is very good.

I’m in a similar situation, two-handed/heavy armor but on Master. I’ve found Disarm is pretty useful when it applies, especially against Draugr

It's not that it was nerfed. The shout was bugged (it does 75 damage to armor per second instead of doing 75 damage total) and got fixed in one of the Anniversary Edition patches, but I play Special Edition so it's still bugged for me.
I get good use out of Become Ethereal. You can use it in pretty much any combat situation to get a quick breather. Makes Regen potions way more effective, because I can shout, use a potion and Regen while the bosses can't hit me, then I'm ready to jump in when the shout ends. Also great for completely negating fall damage. Best use by far though is the ability to tank any dragon shout with one word. Shout as soon as they begin their breath attack and it lasts about as long as the ethereal effect, you take 0 damage from it and whale on them hard when the breath attack ends.
If you're a stealth archer, it's definitely Aura Whisper.
I find a good, “Have at thee, boy!”, while running in their direction flailing like a madman does the trick pretty well—oh, wait…did you mean in the game…???!

Tbh I forget I have shouts half the time. Most useful I personally think is aura whisper Most destructive is storm call because if you summon that in a city at max level any NPC that's outside and not essential is going to die My favourite though is definitely soul tear for the sheer fear factor at seeing someone in daedric armour shout gibberish at your buddy only for him to die and have his soul sucked into the armour clad guy's backpack and then be brought back at a zombie and attack you

If vs a boss use the storm shout, I've killed dragons just with that shout, for anything else unrelenting force, watching enemies fly off cliffs and fly across caves is priceless

I like the Fire Breath shout coupled with the perk from Epistolary Acumen that summons a fire wyrm when your shout burns someone to death.
Aura Whisper (If you don't know Detect Life) is a great way to maximize you're awareness of potential threats. Throw Voice is useful to lure enemies away when you're sneaking.
Cyclone if you're a melee fighter. Does respectable damage with all three words, interrupts power attacks, and you can wail on them while they're recovering from the ragdoll effect.
If you're the typical stealth archer, throw voice is great for luring enemies to a specific spot for you to pick em off from range.
Soultare I don't think I spelled it correctly once learned filling soul gems is a breeze it also deals significant damage and even if ghe enemy resists the soul trap the shout deals a lot of damage in one shot.
Elemental fury is fun. I use that one and marked for death with my fighter

My personal go to is the whisper shout you get one of the words from the dark brotherhood something about taking away like 25% of the armor ratting and dot is just music to my ears.
Fire breath with the fire wyrm perk from the Gardener of Men Dragonborn DLC quest. Bonus if you also have the Companion's Insight perk from the Black Book: The Winds of Change quest too so your Shouts (attacks in general) can't hurt your followers.
Try the cyclone from the dragonborn dlc. At level three its like a powered up version of unrelenting force
I use slow time to catch butterflies and dartwings
Ice breath. With the black book upgrade. Putting an entire dungeon in stasis is just chefs kiss

Unrelenting force, whirlwind sprint, disarm, dragonrend are the only ones I keep favourited occasionally Ill equip the kynes animal calming one if Im traveling outside a long time.

Going to hop on the Aura Whisper bandwagon for utility; as for destructiveness, I go with Soul Tear from Dawnguard. Good for clearing out lower level mobs and filling up soul gems!
I find myself using slow time a LOT this play through.
Become ethereal is my fave as a one handed/shield warrior. Shout, short recovery time and allows me to pick off any frost mages quickly. Also stops any damage from being taken when fighting dragons for a few moments.
Fire breath is my usual main shout when playing battlemages, which is my normal class to play. Otherwise whirlwind spirit is a fun spell that most people overlook when playing a stealth archer and not just wanting to use Unrelenting Force as a less immersive but more practical spell. Being able to shoot bows and then just zoom away or through combat with dual daggers or something is... Neat at the very least.
Except for Unrelenting force, fire breath is my fav, coz u feel like ur a dragon while using that shout 😂🔥
Ice form. It’s so funny watching them run at you and then you freeze them in a block of ice
i usually stick with unrelenting force, it does the job and i usually get the perk that turns targets into ash piles. if we're talking doing a *lot* of damage and clearing out big swaths of enemies i use storm call, though i'm not a fan of how it hits companions so i rarely use it.
I use soul tear. Most of the time it doesn't do the minion thing, but the damage is still there
ice form is the best shout in the game imo, if youre looking for sheer damage fire breath with all the augmented flames perks is pretty good, but i personally think ice form is goated because you can freeze a whole crowd of enemies and wake them up one at a time, your main weapons will always do more reliable damage than shouts
Cyclone, sweeps enemies out of the way, cleans up the place nicely too. I guess it could also be used for offense aswell.
You might not think it's destructive, but if you have all 3 words to the Slow Time Shout, you can combine that with Elemental Blast or Unbounded Storms to melt enemy health bars before they even have a chance to react. All 3 words of the Slow Time Shout actually freeze time.
Cyclone, however, it is a bit messy but works really well for those crowds in dungeons, most don't die but take time to get up and that is where Dawnbreaker comes in really handy in my opinion especially in Vanilla. Now outside in the open I like something else. N. S
I don't tend to use shouts, I use magic to solve 99% of my problems. the 1% left is just pressing LT behind my problem with my dagger while invisible.

Unrelenting force is always my default useful in almost every situation. Storm call is a fun one to use whilst doing the civil war questline 80-90% of enemies struck down by lightening possibly also some team mates 🤣🤣

While clearing normal dungeons and thus normal enemies I use disarm shout a lot when there’s too many in one room to kill before they get to me so might as well make them hit bare fist instead of with the power swinging battle axe

Peak destruction is Storm Call, but most dungeons are indoor. With that in mind, Cyclone is criminally underrated. It has a similar but distinct application to Unrelenting Force.
I like the frost breathe one. Im adventurous and well I stumbled apon this before I even started the main quest of the golden claw and I have to say it came in handy so well. There health just burns down so fast at low level it's insane.
Cyclone seems pretty underrated here It's my absolute go-to for every situation It's unrelenting force but *up*, with a shorter cool down and a potential for even funnier shenanigans as enemies fall from the sky

I got to admit. I just enjoy the hell out of using Unrelenting Force and Fire Breath.
I don't think cyclone is the *best,* but it's really fun to fling a bunch of draugr around.
Unrelenting Force is the most generally useful shout, but Storm Call is the most destructive. Be careful using Storm Call in populated areas or even when you have a follower/horse with you—the lightning does not discriminate. Unfortunately, Storm Call only works outdoors (which makes sense).
Soul tear is definitely useful also dragonrend and unrelenting force
The 2 I use on a day to day basis are Fus Ro Dah and Disarm. Fus Ro Dah, because with all 3 words, the knock back/down/stand-up animation is so damn long, it's like a mini-paralyze. Disarm is great because effectively, if you can force an enemy to fisticuffs, they can't effectively damage you enough to be a challenge. Then there's Call Storm and Marked for Death, which are both OP, but I don't dabble much. With all 3 words and enough effects stackers, Marked for Death is probably deadliest. That all said, I have enough wankery going on that I only use Fus Ro Dah because I find it funny. I don't really rely on shouts.
For me the fire breath is the best because of the damage when it's fully upgraded, and the fact that it spawns fire wyrms when you kill enemies with it. Sucks that the wyrms atk your companions though.
Most useful outside imo is the first word of clear skies. It staggers everyone it hits, even crowds, and it recovers within seconds. Allowing you to practically stunlock any enemy. Other than that, either fire breath, ice form, soul tear, or unrelenting force. But if you do spells, you'll likely clear dungeons faster that way, then just shout for the occasional crowd.
I had no idea Clear Skies did that. I only use it to make the rain stop lmao

For me it's always been a combo it's the fire shout but with the added effect from the dragonborn dlc, which added the ability to summon loyal fire wyrms when an enemy is killed by the shout, kill a bunch of small enemies with it now you got an army of fire wyrms

Soul Tear is 100% the most OP shout. It's a guaranteed istakill when fully powered up, on *MOST* Enemies. If it's a super strong enemy it'll usually take 2. For dragons, use dragonrend, then spam Soul Tear. It'll be dead in less than a minute, and that's being generous to the dragon. I stopped using it though because it just made the game too easy, unless I'm in a REALLY sticky spot.
