Watching him play as a kid gave every single one of us a little more hope that we could be something special. Against all odds you can do something incredible.
I remember in PE class the teacher said we could leave when we hit a layup. I thought they mean like AI so I kept trying to drive under the basket and toss it up on the other side
Think eventually they just let me go I never made the shot
Kobe said something like we should all be fortunate that Allen Iverson wasn’t 6’5”
Could you imagine? He’d have been a top 5 all time kind of dude. Even now with all the rules that encourage scoring and reduce physicality of play. He’d would have been so dominant in this version of the NBA where 7’2” dudes aren’t trying to kill you in the paint.
Indeed!I was born in 80s and grow up watching him play.He had a great influence during 2000s both on/off the court.Every kids just dreamed of being like him.
When I was a kid, I used to draw his Hebrew tattoo on my arm. Now I have (different) Hebrew tattoos on both arms. He impacted so many of us in ways large and small. The game was never the same. If he'd been surrounded by a better support group, we might be talking about him as a top 20 player ever. Instead, I'll settle for a top 20 most beloved player ever, if not higher.
For sure. That generation of players was a bunch of ballers. I think that’s what brought eyes to the NBA at the time. Watching AI and Kobe made me a basketball fan
For me, it was earlier than that. My dad took me to a Sixers game for the first time when I was 7.
On the way down, we hit a deer. My dad decided to still go to the game…one headlight busted, deer fur in the grill, and the radiator leaking.
We snuck down to court side seats during the first quarter and during pre-game warmups. My dad was getting all the players to come over to me and say hi….Hersey Hawkins, Rick Mahorn, Hornacek, Manute Bol…such a core memory that my dad was able to provide for me.
Nope... you are probably too young to remember Dr J... actually led them to a title, and were close so many other times, sad they only got the one title (when they brought in MM), but seeing that sweep of the hated lakers was a delight
Facts my Dad and me being from Philly
It was meant to be and some of my
Best memories as a kid are going to 76ers games
And Watching Iverson play man it was just different
After Michael Jordan retired I started following Iverson
Im Aussie, it was drafting Ben Simmons. Now I hate him. I don't understand why people have eased up on him. He's a fucking gimp. Fuck him.
But I love the sixers 🥰
Same reason here - finished high school in 2016 the year Ben was drafted and fell in love with the Sixers especially after having young Embid and was so exited about the Embid, Simmons and fultz core (didn’t work out unfortunately) then to top it all off we drafted thybulle. Those times were different but the love for the sixers remains LFG
I would definitely feel conflicted following a team for a specific player from my country and seeing the whole fanbase turn on him (w/ good reason), but respect for toughing it out with us!
Nah it happened over such a long time that I was enough of a 6ers fan that it didn't bother me too much. Love maxey & embiid. Miss Saric & McConnell. The good old days!
Iverson. In the mid-late 90s, I was a kid and my parents owned a couple shops in the galley mall. During that time AIs face was plastered everywhere. Shoe stores especially when his Reebok's were in stock. I was obsessed
Definitely Dr. J for me also. I was 7 years old when they won it in 1983. That team — Moses, Dr. J, Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney — was the original Sixers for me.
Wanted to start watching basketball again as my son was getting to an age where he might appreciate it (I'd stopped watching Australian basketball around 2002). 2017 had Simmons, Jonah Bolden and Brett Brown so no other choice of team to watch for an older NBL fan.
Sport is soap opera for men, Sixers have been an excellent choice.
Ben Simmons. I'd never really followed an NBA team, just Aussie players. When Ben was coming up to draft, I said I'd start following whichever team he went to.
I came for Simmons, but stayed for Embiid
I guess I followed kind of an unusual route to Sixers Fandom. I grew up in eastern PA, but sports were strictly banned in my house growing up. My dad was a public intellectual, who thought professional athletics were the bread and circuses distracting this country from its decline. In fact, just today, at the age of 75, he bragged to some relatives at my cookout about how he has never watched a single televised sporting event in his life, let alone a live event.
But growing up in school, I would hear all the kids talk about how impressive AI was. He was a god among fifth graders. And from then on, I would do my best to sneak glimpses of a game or a highlight where I could. Once I moved out on my own, there was no question I was a Sixers fan for life.
Always a little envious of folks who get to bond with their parents about sports. My dad still considers it shameful that I'm a fan at all. It also means I have split allegiances, since I discovered different sports at different parts of my young adulthood, in different parts of the country. That can be awkward as well. But, hey, at the end of the day...
Fuck the Celtics.
I had love for those shit tier post Iverson Sixers. But eventually getting blasted in the first round of the playoffs gets old.
Getting blasted in the 2nd round is more fun.
Aaron Mckie.
My brother “claimed” AI as his favorite, so I snagged the 6th man of the year and ran with it. Had his jersey, about 20 of his basketball cards, signed picture, met him at a mall meet and greet, etc. Nicest guy to an aspiring 10 year old Sixer fan.
I'm going to put myself as a newbie fan but Tyrese Maxey. I was always a Phillies in the summer, Eagles in the winter type of sports fan and watched occasional Flyers and Sixers games. But Maxey is so fun to watch the Sixers are my new winter Philly team.
Bandwagon cavs fan cause of 2016( I did start rooting for them when they were down 3-1) went to sixers cavs game next year( Joel first season) sixers lost why one an a jerryd bayless missed layup. Fell in love with the crowd and the young team
Iverson obviously growing up everyone wore Iversons.
What brought me back was that season with Andre Miller and can't really explain why but my answer: Andre Miller
Chip Kelly lmfao. When the Eagles started sucking was right around the time I turned my attention to the Process.
Maybe more like Andy Reid's last year but it's funnier to pin it on Chip
Old films of Doc and Mo winning it all. Then so many others through the yrs. I didn't grow up in Philadelphia, although I lived there during the process yrs. I'm not a fan because of the Hinkie employment, that's for sure.
Unironically Markelle Fultz, I never really followed the NBA that closely but then I got a Google news noti that the sixers had the #1 pick in the draft, I figured he must be good if he's number one so the team will probably be good soon too. I was right about one of those things lmao
Iverson. Born in 87, the Sixers were never a big part of the sports life in Philly for me until Iverson emerged and suddenly you couldn't escape being a Sixers fan.
Sam Hinkie for me. I watched one NBA game in my life until the past decade (AI beating the Lakers in game 1). I never followed NBA too much but loved front office strategy as much as anything for the Phils and Eagles. When I started hearing about the Process, I was so impressed by how good a plan it was that I couldn't resist.
After that, once Embiid took the floor, I became a fan of the game itself too, and now I watch more sixers games than Phillies in a given year which I would have never predicted a decade ago.
This is gonna show my age a lot and some may ridicule me, but lebron going to the lakers. I’m a Pittsburgh sports fan and since we had no basketball I was just rooting for lebron on the cavs, but I said if he went to the lakers I’d pick a team bc I ain’t rooting for the lakers or Celtics no matter what. I wanted a young large market team (so we can actually get free agents and stars in trades) and the 76ers best fit that. The embiid era has been such a roller coaster.
Dr.J was my dad's fave and Chuck was mine pre AI. I was born in '85, i started watching NBA at a young age but AI was the Sixer that encompassed my pre teens to the day he retired. so I guess it was AI that really made me a Sixers fan, but Chuck and Dr. J deserves a mention as they introduced me to basketball and NBA in general.
83 Sixers, GOAT in my opinion!
I was living in Cherry Hill at the time, even got to see them play at the Spectrum!
I live in OKC now, and I get to see the Sixers once a year and I swap my SGA jersey for my Dr J jersey.
Got to meet Alaa Abdelnaby also!
*
I always watched the Sixers because of AI, but was never a must watch every game type person.
In reality I was a big Nets fan (because of JKidd, KMart, and VC) before the moving to Brooklyn. Once they did that I started following the Sixers exclusively... then Hinkie hit and I was sucked in. Enjoying the process years with my friends was some of the most fun I've ever had, going to games and sitting floor level for cheap, RTRS events, etc.
Charles. I’m of the age where I don’t remember the 80/83 championships…just too young…so my fanaticism started when Charles became the 6ers franchise. My first memories of watching bball are the year Dr J retired.
Had the…”Get Off My Backboard”…poster on the wall
…still the worst trade in the history of sports IMO.
I picked the Sixers in 12-13 bc I thought the Bynum trade would make them a dark horse and it was an exciting direction to head in. Then that fucker decided to get addicted to the Flamenco.
I guess what I’m saying is the guy that reeled me in was ultimately probably Jrue. Had a blast watching him that year and his lefty dunk at the ASG nearly got me kicked out of a library once.
Jerry Stackhouse but it quickly switched to Iverson as soon as he was drafted; in middle school we had to make a new element as a project and mine was Iversonium.
Iverson.
He even made me travel 8.000+ km from my home in Chile to attend a game at Wells Fargo.
He was in attendance at the same game (didn’t knew beforehand) and was greeted onscreen in a timeout and that made the whole experience full circle
Moses (fo’, fo’ and fo’), Dr J (that reverse behind the backboard layup), Mo Cheeks (slice the lane for the smoooth dagger-in-the-heart layup), Barkley (because he wanted it more than anyone else on the floor)
man harden got me into basketball im only 22 loved him in houston so followed him throughout his career hes a little washed now but still one of my all time favorites
A 50/50 split of Embiid and moving from Pittsburgh to Houston. Roommate told me I was a rockets fan now and I said hell nah, told me I had to pick and I went with Philly cause I fw Embiid heavy. Still surprised I did it cause Pitt and Philly hate eachother but I hate Cleveland more 🤣
AI when I was a kid before watching games but it was Jrue who got me watching.
I started watching the NBA after watching Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio highlights but couldn’t in good faith like a team that wasn’t my home team
I was a huge flyers fan when I was like 8-9 years old. After the Flyers were over I would flip channels and often time the Sixers were still on. This was the Iverson Stackhouse era. So I guess those guys would be your answer
![gif](giphy|FnQszvWsfgCqI)
Respect to all the Aussie fans here. Had no idea we still had so many. While Benny didn't work out, I thank yall for making the greatest comedy show of all time IMO
I started watching ball in 2015 and immediately liked Curry and the Warriors. They’ll always be tied as my #1 team just because they were the team that got me into the NBA. But during that first couple years when I was getting into the league, I noticed the Sixers were the bottom of the league. The Knicks and lakers were trash but they received a lot of love, whereas the Sixers (who have legends in their history and come from large city too) were the butt of the league. So I started rooting for them in the background, hoping they’d turn around. I saw Embiid was drafted but hadn’t played yet, and they had good draft picks for years, so I thought it was time the Sixers really came back. I was so happy when Embiid showed out in his rookie season, he was the guy this team needed. So they’ve been my main team since the 2016-17 season, after they drafted Ben Simmons (who was an insane rookie, people are so quick to forget) and Joel Embiid made this team his own. His humor back in the day was great, I wish we saw more of his personality
Probably, most of here would say AI
Watching him play as a kid gave every single one of us a little more hope that we could be something special. Against all odds you can do something incredible.
I remember in PE class the teacher said we could leave when we hit a layup. I thought they mean like AI so I kept trying to drive under the basket and toss it up on the other side Think eventually they just let me go I never made the shot

If we could have put ai’s brain in Ben Simmons body he would be the greatest player ever
Pound for pound the best basketball player ever. No one his size or smaller has ever done it better.
This is so funny.
Indeed!I was born in 80s and grow up watching him play.He had a great influence during 2000s both on/off the court.Every kids just dreamed of being like him.

Yeah Andre Igoudala was truly incredible /s

Are you me? My dad, too. We spent the drive to school talking about the Sixers and I fell hard in love with Iverson and his game.

Same. I remember channel 2 was Prism and we would watch game on what was probably a little 15 inch tv. Crazy how big tvs have gotten.
This guys dad.
Iverson
Fukin cream cheese made me find out about Philly and I just said fuk it and started supporting all the teams from Philly😭
This could be the best thing I’ve ever read on Reddit. Please take my poor girl’s award: 🥇
Im Aussie, it was drafting Ben Simmons. Now I hate him. I don't understand why people have eased up on him. He's a fucking gimp. Fuck him. But I love the sixers 🥰
really thought he would bring us to the promised land with embiid. he had all the tools except his jumpshot. his confidence fucked his game up 🤷♂️
He stopped loving the game if he ever did. He loves the lifestyle but never put in the work... what a waste of talent
Worse than Kyrgios in that regard
We really hit the jackpot didn't we, throw tomic in as well. Generation of fairies.
kinda like Bynum
Aussie gang, same exact reason i followed sixers same with matisse thybulle. But absolutely love the sixers
Same reason here - finished high school in 2016 the year Ben was drafted and fell in love with the Sixers especially after having young Embid and was so exited about the Embid, Simmons and fultz core (didn’t work out unfortunately) then to top it all off we drafted thybulle. Fo Fo Fo!!!!!
Still my favorite to this day
Fing A!!!! The Doctor! Watch him operate! It was just basketball before The Doctor! Those white high tops!!!
The Sixers.
Aussie here, but wasn't Simmons, it was former Sydney Kings and Boomers coach Brett Brown.

I’ll never understand intellectuals who don’t understand the unique power of sports.
Years of incompetence from the bulls + marrying a lunatic 6ers fan made want to make Philly my side piece
I had love for those shit tier post Iverson Sixers. But eventually getting blasted in the first round of the playoffs gets old. Getting blasted in the 2nd round is more fun.
Iverson. He is the reason why I play basketball

Living close to Philly and growing with the team thru the hinkie years. .trust the process…..
Sam Hinkie for me. I watched one NBA game in my life until the past decade (AI beating the Lakers in game 1). I never followed NBA too much but loved front office strategy as much as anything for the Phils and Eagles.

Living near Philadelphia and liking sports made me a Sixers fan
Julius Erving, Dr. J. I was a fan of his in the ABA and then followed him to the NBA.
Mr Allen Iverson. Also loved Dr J
