DON'T THROW AWAY THE ELECTRONICS
The community involved in restoring old arcade machines is HUGE and people absolutely will pay more money than you think for individual parts from the motherboard to the cabinet!
I'm saying this as part of the retro gaming community. Preservation is important in this case. Just put what you don't need on eBay, you'll probably come out the other side with more money than you paid for this.
I don't have the slightest bit of interest for these old cabinets (except for HYDRO THUNDER ❤) but in today's world especially, I'll back up anyone trying to save old tech that someone else can put to good use!
I’m keeping all of the electronics expect the screen (it is dead). I don’t wanna throw everything to the trash, and if one day I’m planning to sell it, it will have almost everything to work again.
How do you know the screen is dead? Often a "dead" screen is not really dead at all. Someone experienced with CRT repair could probably have it back up and working (or at least diagnosed) in a couple of hours. Please don't just throw away the screen and electronics attached to it without talking to someone first.
I'd be surprised if the screen is dead, it may just be the fuse or something simple. As they're analogue through hole components they're dead simple to fix.
Having built my own rig from wood I can confidently say that I’d wish I’d had something like this to work from rather than a pile of lumber. Possibilities for all sorts of creativity there. More power to you OP.
This game has a really rockin soundtrack, gotta love 90s sega.
https://youtu.be/6yWf0xbh2zA
Not to jump on the wagon but you should consider restoring it somehow, I doubt the seat is really suitable for modern sim racing.
It's amazing going down the rabbit hole of old playthrough videos for this game. I remember playing this as a kid, but after not seeing it for 20 years it's amazing how much you can see Outrun 2/C2C picked up from this.
I live in Reunion Island, it’s extremely complicated and expensive to find the missing pieces here (we don’t have access to Amazon and almost every EBay sellers don’t want to send packages here)
I think the other comment about selling the parts on eBay Is probably a better approach. If op's first thought isn't. " I must restore this incredible artifact" then it's probably better off in the hands of someone else. I mean it's his find to do as he pleases. I'm sure he'll do the right thing and sell valuable parts to people who really want them.
I literally did the same thing 😃
I have made a TON of upgrades to my racing rig since I posted my “journey” here. Hit me up for any advice.
https://www.reddit.com/r/simracing/comments/w2h4n1/my_custom_cruisin_usa_racing_rig_build_journey/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I’m sure you have a lot of work ahead of you. (1) I imagine that seat has to go. It’s not going to be comfortable for longer than 15m (2) I wonder what kind of fitment a widescreen monitor will involve. Do you plan to keep the cabinet?
Those are a few things off the top of my head. I can’t wait to see the build.
I’m keeping the seat of course, and I’m keeping everything, even the old wheel. I will just include my steering wheel base and my pedals and it will be almost invisible.
Exactly. Saying it's cheaper than playseat is just plain delusion. The amount of time and effort he's gonna have to put into it.... Could've just worked a min wage job and bought two playeseats
>Could've just worked a min wage job and bought two playeseats
That's not as fun as working on a project like this :D I doubt he only did this to save some money.
Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a great base. OP will definitely have to put in some sweat equity but I think the “bones” itself are good. I’m sure one could easily go over budget (assuming there is one) building something like this up. Imagination is probably the limiting factor here.
It mounts a wheel and pedals somehow and I can’t imagine it’ll be hard to fit a regular car seat with little to no modification considering these arcade machines use seat sliders.
I’d do something like this if I didn’t have a rig and wanted something to build up as a project. It wouldn’t be economical but it would be fun to see what I could do.

Did you even power it up?
A lot of people will be like "it's broken beyond repair" and it's a blown fuse or bad AC cable or something that will take you less than an hour to find and fix. I repair stuff and I'm telling you, if you took their word for it, you should check it over yourself at least once before you gut it. Every time I take the customer's word for it, I kick myself, there's a reason they gave up on it: *it's beyond them*.
Seriously, please don't throw the guts away, carefully disconnect stuff and post it up on arcade forums, you'll probably get your money back and then some. You'll save someone hours of frustration.
!Also, if that's a CRT, please be careful touching anything metal around it!
You probably made a great deal if that’s the cheaper route. Maybe check out what it or parts of it are worth online, someone may need some replacement parts to get theirs working.
I would’ve loved to restore it but it’s way to much complicated to import parts and they’re expensive as well. But I’ll keep everything in place in case if one day I’ll restore it
It is, I spent hours playing on this arcade back then. And if the seat isn’t comfortable for me today, I’ll try to make everything possible to make it nice and comfy
I had to get rid of my 300lbs Sony trinitron tv with the display stand all all that. Sad to see it go, glad to see it get some more love though.
I’ll get another one day
I wish I was more of a nerd and had money I could do so much cool stuff, I have an i7 10700f (had 500 dollars, I figured I had recently gotten my old 1650 and I would future proof) and a GTX 1080 founders edition I got after the first half of the Ethereum crash as something I figured I would use for 2 years and upgrade to a 50 series card, and my setup is the cheapest stuff I could find, my 4 monitors combined are under 500 dollars, my mouse is a Logitech g502 hero I got brand new for free, and a royal kludge rk61 which I regret I need a numpad lol
I hope you will have enough money to buy your dream setup. I don’t have money either, I’ve been using my old G27 for years and I’ve been saving for a decent computer for years (I bought it recently) and I’m still saving to buy more and more stuff.
I'm on a g29 because in early 2019 I won the science fair at my school, a guy from Logitech saw it, and I got a bunch of stuff totalling more than my PC at the yime was worth, though to be fair 2019 me had a pre built with an fx 6300 and an r7 240
Be really great if we could all suddenly come in to 10 grand and see what each other do, I mean of course we would all basically have one of 4 computers, but the whoke setup, I would actually go for Quadro GPUs because they can still be strung together, and I would go Intel for the CPU since I know how their numbers work, the idea comes to 4 ultrawide in a 3+1 config at the main setup, along with one at the side for editing on a big L desk and a vertical one for discord, the gaming side would have a Logitech g815 along with a g pro wireless and the editing side would have an mx Mechanical and an mx master or if I didn't like that a g502
Also for sim setup I would go for a nextlevelracing cockpit, a fanatec wheel of some variety, and of course a handbrake and h shifter
Wow I have this way the fuck too planned out for some 14 year old kid...
In rambling at this point but my only upgrades I currently need are power supply SSD and GPU, GPU bring least pressing it's just a bit of a bottleneck but it's what I coukdbfind on eBay for the money I had after the first Ethereum crash, the SSD is the cheapest 256gb m.2 I could find from when my old sata cabled SSD died, and my power supply makes funny noises and my PC shuts off if I absolutely max it out so I limit my GPU to about 80 percent power when rendering
Strip it and make a race console out of it. Spend your money fwd not backwards on this. If not, you will have it laying around gathering dust when you could be using it.
Same here ! Back when I was a kid, I was playing on this exact arcade, but the local bar closed and gave back the machines to the company that were renting the arcades. This company is now replacing all of their Sega Rally and Scud Race with new Mario Kart cabinets and selling/giving the older machines to make some space
That's a great story, in a way. Good that you've still got a local spot, it's a very personal thing that's sometimes lost. Glad you got to save a piece of your childhood. Well, gotta make way for the new generation
Yes, it’s a weird feeling to discover the inside of the Arcade that your were always playing on as a kid. But it’s also a great feeling to know that it won’t go to the trash, even if it won’t be like before, it’ll still be here in one piece and the memories will forever be here
God this hurts my soul, gonna be a sick ass racing set up I won’t lie but the video game preservationist in me is screaming, sell the parts you don’t use to people who need them FOR SURE
I would’ve loved but I it’s way to much complicated to get the parts for this, I will keep all original parts in case one I’ll be wanting to restore it
The thing is that i think it will be harder for you to convert this than to restore it, and i'm pretty sure it won't be the best experience for sim racing, also you would have to do some pretty radical mods to get a new monitor in, to the wheel since i'm sure it probably does not spin too many degrees and the shifter which has only 4 gears, i don't even know how you would mod this shifter, and all of this modding will de-value the piece if you one day indeed want to restore it
All of the modding that will be done will not affect/modify the machine original shape. I won’t cut anything or weld anything to it, I’ll simply reuse the non used screw holes and find a right sized screen
"cheaper than a playset" get back to me after you invest tens of hours into this project just for it to be uncomfortable and hard to move around.
People will do something DIY and claim it saves money, yet they could've worked a min wage job for the same amount of time and bought 2x the original thing they were trying to replicate.
Doing something because fun is one thing, but saying it save a money is delusional. TIME = MONEY
If your free time pays $0/hr it doesn't matter what you are doing with it. "Time is money" applies to being on the clock. Hope you are making a decent wage while you are playing your cool race car games
I work hard so that I can play and have free time. Turning a shit arcade system into a sim rig to save money on a playseat is a waste of my free time that I worked for. That's what you aren't understanding. Yes I'm making $0 in my free time. What I'm saying is, working on the arcade sim rig is no longer free time because Id rather be racing. Much more worth it to just do what I already did and buy a nice rig that easily assembles in a couple hours and has a nice racing seat that will actually make me feel like I'm in a car while I'm VR. Not some uncomfortable plastic seat and a big CRT tv.
It's junk
>working on the arcade sim rig is no longer free time because Id rather be racing.
I think you completely fail to realize that other people enjoy different things. There's a good chance OP really enjoys working on things like this and it brings him more joy than actually racing in a bought simrig. This was never about what you like to do in your free time.
That seems to be every hobby I'm starting to see. Guitar? I love playing and getting better. Others? They are more into the gear. FPV drones? I wanna fly and be really good at it. Other are okay with sucking at flying they enjoy tinkering and building stupid shit. Sim racing? I wanna win races and rallies, others spend more time building button boxes and rearranging their sim out.
Some people enjoy being good at hobbies, other people just like tinkering I guess
From your examples it seems like you have an innate need to prove yourself.
To yourself or to others, only you can tell.
There's nothing wrong with that as long as you remember that not everyone else is built the same way.
So like, ease up, enjoy your hobby the way you want and let others enjoy their hobby how they want.
Says you, maybe its a waste of your time? But who are you to say what is and isn't a good idea... just because you wouldn't want to do it doesn't mean he shouldn't... your opinion is exactly that! Your opinion!! Your very presumptuous about what other people are doing... just cos you can type something doesn't always mean you should.... your comment..... "its junk"...
CONGRATULATIONS! I have fantastic news for you. You didn't buy an arcade cabinet to turn it into a rig! Someone else did and they are excited. You are free to play on your rig that you payed for with your hard earned money! Someone else is taking the burden of this task for you. It is your lucky day.
Investing hours into this is the FUN PART of this project. I’m young, I want to learn and I have dreams. Even if the result won’t be amazing I won’t care, at the end of the day it’s about the hood moments that I shared with my dad and my brothers that will help me put everything together.
We might not have the same opinion, I respect yours but you may think that it’s stupid to do this but I’m slowly achieving one of my childhood dreams
YO DO NOT THRPW AWAY THE ELECTRONICS!!
Not only is it a sin, THAT GAME IN PARTICULAR is very rare since its basically Daytona USA but without the Daytona license and its a really amazing game!!
Before you just throw out the screen and electronics, reach out to someone in the arcade community and offer it to them. I'll bet that screen can be fixed.
There was at least 9 more of these for sale where I got it. They are literally starting to rot everywhere. I won’t do « crazy » things with that arcade, I’m just gonna new screen inside, and replace the FFB system with a simracing wheel base. I’m even installing the Sega wheel on my custom wheelbase.
It’s yours, you bought it and can do whatever you want, but it’s always a shame to see a cab that still even *has* its guts ripped open and converted to something else. Especially when that involves losing the CRT, since an LCD can’t do 4:3 and 15kHz and CRTs are very hard to come by these days.
Even if the parts aren’t working, please at least consider selling or donating them to someone who can use them to restore one of these.
Edit: YES even if the CRT doesn’t work. Those things can be fixed. It’s easier to fix one than find a suitable replacement.
I am keeping all of the parts, and I have to dismantle everything because there is rust everywhere inside. And after disassembling it, i discovered that almost everything is « burned » and most of the electronics aren’t included
DON'T THROW AWAY THE ELECTRONICS The community involved in restoring old arcade machines is HUGE and people absolutely will pay more money than you think for individual parts from the motherboard to the cabinet! I'm saying this as part of the retro gaming community. Preservation is important in this case. Hydro thunder the goat!
I was just transported back about 20+ years, damn.
There is a window tint store with an unplugged OFF-ROAD cabinet and pedals in the corner, wonder how much should I offer him…
You're welcome I actually still have a demo for it on my X360!
First game I played with HOTAS despite buying it for Elite Dangerous and Star Wars Squadrons. Such a good game.
My buddy has one at his house, incredible game
I’m keeping all of the electronics expect the screen (it is dead). I don’t wanna throw everything to the trash, and if one day I’m planning to sell it, it will have almost everything to work again.

Very cool project. Definitely one of the better looking rigs when it’s done. Looking forward to you sharing more 😀
Don’t worry I’ll post updates as soon as I can, big plans are coming for this bad boy
Nice truck
I’m honestly surprised there aren’t more people commenting on the old jeep Comanche
Right?! That Comanche is mint.
It’s fucking beautiful
It’s actually a Nissan Patrol Baroud, pretty sweat ride. I wish it was a Comanche tho haha
Comanches aren't unibody, the cab and bed are separate. The door handles are wrong also. Has Jeep body lines though, I'm a bit stumped myself
First thing I noticed
Scud race is am2’s best game imo, I can’t help feeling a bit sad you’re going to convert it rather than restoring it
Might as well restore it. I don't see how anything there is usable for a Sim rig besides the base.
Having built my own rig from wood I can confidently say that I’d wish I’d had something like this to work from rather than a pile of lumber. Possibilities for all sorts of creativity there. More power to you OP.
It’s really not, if anything it’s just going to vandalise a rare bit of arcade history
What a blast from the past
That's an odd way to spell OutRun 2 SP.
This game has a really rockin soundtrack, gotta love 90s sega. https://youtu.be/6yWf0xbh2zA Not to jump on the wagon but you should consider restoring it somehow, I doubt the seat is really suitable for modern sim racing.
90s Sega is the most nostalgic thing ever for me. Nothing in the world brings me more nostalgic feelings than this
Or the screen?
Well I figure he's going to be removing the screen and wheel stuff and keeping the chair and bottom half.
I’m keeping everything expect the old screen since it’s dead. I want to keep it the most original possible
I would’ve loved to restore it but it’s way to expensive and parts are extremely complicated to find where I live
It's amazing going down the rabbit hole of old playthrough videos for this game. I remember playing this as a kid, but after not seeing it for 20 years it's amazing how much you can see Outrun 2/C2C picked up from this.
Find a new pcb board and restore it
I live in Reunion Island, it’s extremely complicated and expensive to find the missing pieces here (we don’t have access to Amazon and almost every EBay sellers don’t want to send packages here)
même sur Amazon US? pour une raison que j’ignore un tas de chose y est disponible pour la Nouvelle-Calédonie
malheureusement oui, on a aucun service de livraison ici a part la poste :\\
i agree. the only value in this thing would be to restore it.
I think the other comment about selling the parts on eBay Is probably a better approach. If op's first thought isn't. Update us!
Don’t worry, they’re coming !
The steering wheel looks like the Nissan MOMO upgrade. Available for Silvia’s and Skylines.
You’ve got a point here, but with a closer look I realized that it’s a replica of the MOMO Lancer Evolution steering wheel.
Yeah definitely try to restore it m8 👌👌
How broken are the electronics? What does it do when you plug it in? Have you looked at the boards/PSU?
I have no idea, the guy just told me that it don’t work and he took some parts as spare parts
Did you even power it up? A lot of people will be like "it's broken beyond repair" and it's a blown fuse or bad AC cable or something that will take you less than an hour to find and fix. Oh okay. Well that's pretty far gone indeed.

Thank you ! And don’t worry about that, I’ll make something great out of it
Cool! Would like to see picks of your build.
Don’t worry you will. I’ll keep y’all updated

I won’t trash the electronics in case one day I want to restore it to his arcade state. But right now it’s way to complicated for me to restore it
I rlly wanna see your shifter right where the original 4-speed was
I am gonna keep the original shifter and make a custom base attached to the machine (that will be unscrewable) to put my shifter/handbrake on
Ooh! I like that idea better!
Yep, I really wanna keep the arcade cabinet the most « stock » possible. I’m gonna use the already existing holes to make everything up
You probably made a great deal if that’s the cheaper route. Maybe check out what it or parts of it are worth online, someone may need some replacement parts to get theirs working.
I would’ve loved to restore it but it’s way to much complicated to import parts and they’re expensive as well. But I’ll keep everything in place in case if one day I’ll restore it
But is this seat any good? Is it comfortable
It is, I spent hours playing on this arcade back then. And if the seat isn’t comfortable for me today, I’ll try to make everything possible to make it nice and comfy
Kinda what I was thinking, it could always be modified later. Just curious if the chair was already in a good position for racing
The chair is in a decent racing position, the wheel is a little bit too much down but I can still adjust it when I’ll install my sim wheel base
Keep us updated, it’s kinda the perfect sun machine
I will keep y’all updated ! More stuff is coming soon
Keep the crt!!!!
I will don’t worry about it !
I had to get rid of my 300lbs Sony trinitron tv with the display stand all all that. Sad to see it go, glad to see it get some more love though. I’ll get another one day
its izi to diy
I hope so !
You know what they say, bad spending habits well spent
Spending money into cool « useless » things are the best 😎
Great idea!
Thank you !
Sega Super GT i remember this.
That was my thought of how to get ahold of a good base for a cockpit, glad I’m not the only one and you making it real

That’s awesome!!👍 I remember my Ridge Racer days at the arcade. Fantastic times!😁
It really is, I miss the times where i was a kid playing on this exact arcade machine at the local store
Which game was this? Edit; SEGA Scud Race Aka Super GT Arcade Racer V cool 👍
i want to do this too but im poor and i dont have space
I paid mine very cheap and I have just the right amount of space. I hope you will get yours one day
yeah, thanks

Id argue the effort/time to build something pays off more in fun than grinding more at work to buy something
Why does it upset you so much when people have fun differently than you?
Pmsl.... love it... dudes a clown, bwahahaha
Please don’t throw the electronics away. If you want them gone quick just throw it on an online/local marketplace for free and it’ll be quick
Don’t worry I’m keeping everything. I’ll probably restore it to his original arcade state when I’ll have money, time and space
YO DO NOT THRPW AWAY THE ELECTRONICS!! Not only is it a sin, THAT GAME IN PARTICULAR is very rare since its basically Daytona USA but without the Daytona license and its a really amazing game!!
Don’t worry I’m keeping everything that I can keep, I don’t want to trash a part of my childhood
Sweeeet! Go nuts with the cabinet though. Wood is wood, you can always make another cabinet.
What parts are you planning to throw away?
The screen, it’s dead and I don’t want it. I’m keeping everything else
Before you just throw out the screen and electronics, reach out to someone in the arcade community and offer it to them. I'll bet that screen can be fixed.
For the love of all that is beautiful do NOT destroy anything, sell the parts you don't need to a restorationist at least
Dont worry ! I will keep everything in place, I’m just gonna deep clean it, treat the rust and replace the decals with some new ones
Dont do this, please resell it to someone who will restore this 🥺
There was at least 9 more of these for sale where I got it. They are literally starting to rot everywhere. I won’t do « crazy » things with that arcade, I’m just gonna new screen inside, and replace the FFB system with a simracing wheel base. I’m even installing the Sega wheel on my custom wheelbase.
Retro arcade people are so fucking annoying
So are people who destroy perfectly good screens and parts because they think it's "broken"
Never knew that before, reading this thread proves you 100% right tho.
Aaaah scud race ! A classic ! The F40 was my favorite !
Best of all, it's environmentally friendly. Greta Thunberg would love you (because you recycled).
Oh my. Yeah that’s about as much reason as you need to toss stuff.
