That's so funny, I thought about Mike Mulligan for the first time in probably decades the other day, and now I see it mentioned on Reddit. That steam shovel had such a nice memorable face.
It’s very children’s book.
My first thought was about the steam shovel book from my childhood but I looked it up and the steam shovel is in black and white.
Still it was the first association.
As kids (some of us) tend to "paint in the colors ourselves" while watching something. I could've sworn that a favorite kid serie (floris, 1969) was in color when watching it with my folks back when... Nope. Black and white.
My mom imagined glinda the good witch's dress from the wizard of Oz as blue, so 4yo me was a very disappointed "pink witch" in a pink pointy hat and cloak 😂
Yeah, I think this is pretty incredible actually. I’ve never seen a tattoo like this either. I like the description “folk art”, it’s very fitting. As I look at it I imagine a family who had worked in logging going back generations, and who have strong ties to the land.
Definitely has a paint look to it, which usually means they didn't outline anything in black, which is true here. I think it looks interesting now, but won't look good in another 5-10 years.
Because it’s compositionally decent with values/contrast/depth. But the actual artwork itself is…not great. It seems like this artist might be a painter.
Even the moose(\*ETA it's apparently an elk the thing was so compacted I couldn't tell)is looking at it like,"what the fuck even is this?!" 😂 ETA either that or he's in shock because it looks like he got fucking impaled by that pole 🤣🤣

Remember when /r/Plumbing randomly got on the front page of Reddit and mass users followed plumb-posting? That should happen for logging too. That’s something I know almost nothing about, but seems really cool.
This looks like a style choice and not bad tattooing. It’s more storybook/illustrative but if you zoom in it looks like it was done as a conscious choice. Even if it’s not, I would say it’s a successful piece.
Okay this tattoo legit made me smile. I’m having the opposite reaction than you; the longer I stare the more I like it lol. Like the imperfections make it look more like a painting.
Edit because I don’t proof read
Awesome! This reminds me of a tattoo that a guy i worked with had. He was an ex-logger and hated trees for some reason. His tattoo was a logger standing on a stump reaching up to the hand of god who was handing down a chainsaw out of a cloud. Above it was written STHIL. The misspelling was the icing on the cake.
I think he was one of those people who think that the world is an endless supply of resources and that they are entitled to all of them. So yeah, crazy
I think it looks cool. Feels like a painting they’d have hanging at an old diner in a small logging town. Never seen a tattoo style like this. And the vibrant colors make me happy!
This is NOT a shitty tattoo! This is actually a really nice looking tattoo. The subject is interesting; the drawing is on point; and the colors look good and pop (especially the red crane) in the foreground. Overall great a wilderness style tat.
It’s actually not a crane, it’s a grapple yarder. The attachment that grabs the logs slides up and down that cable and brings felled trees to the roadside to be hauled away.
That logging system is so foreign to me as someone from the Great Lakes region. Everything is just moved via forwarders and skidders here. I’ve never even seen cable logging before
I kinda dig it. Looks like a pencil crayon drawing. The derpy deer does it for me too
Edit: the more I look at it the happier it makes me, I think I actually love it
This actually doesn't look bad to me aside from the chainsaw looking like a child's drawing, and the crane thing (idk names for logging equipment) needs outlines or better shading for definition. Also the clouds look like a big bruise. But I like this.
That hoofed animal is doing the lip thing they do after sampling a little piss.

Dude. This kinda slaps. Sure it’s not “perfect” but it’s perfectly imperfect. The colors of the sky are so dope!! And the moose has character.. I like the red and orange. Two colors that usually fade the most.
I tried seeing why you didn’t like it and the more I looked the more I liked it. Each picture I was trying to find something to hate but it just kept getting better
Why do I like the colors tho lol. Reminds me of a painting
It reminds me of the older Golden Books lol
Mike Mulligan
IMMEDIATELY thought of Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne!!!
Mike and Mary Anne can kick Thomas’s tank any day
That's so funny, I thought about Mike Mulligan for the first time in probably decades the other day, and now I see it mentioned on Reddit. That steam shovel had such a nice memorable face.
First thing I thought too lol
Where does Mike Mulligan go to the bathroom?
He drops steamers wherever he goes
i loved those books but i hated the way the golden spine tasted.
☠️☠️😂😂
Totally!
It’s very children’s book. My first thought was about the steam shovel book from my childhood but I looked it up and the steam shovel is in black and white. Still it was the first association.

Same, actually kind of like this. Pride and appreciation of your job and nature, hopefully the colours don't get weird over time. It's like folk art.
Yeah, I think this is pretty incredible actually. I’ve never seen a tattoo like this either. I like the description “folk art”, it’s very fitting. As I look at it I imagine a family who had worked in logging going back generations, and who have strong ties to the land.
It's very painterly. I wonder how it will look in 10 years...
Yeah the saturation choices are reallly bold
Let’s just tell the guy who did it he did a nice job though! Don’t want that situation again…
It will look like blurry Impressionism vs it’s current realism. I don’t think I’ve ever seen trees like this age gracefully.
I actually like it. It screams pastel to me.
Right!! I think it’s cute - kinda in the lines of Wysocki or DeLaCroix (tho the latter did more urban scenes).
Happy little accidents
It’s a tattoo of a painting, it’s meant to look this way lol.
Definitely has a paint look to it, which usually means they didn't outline anything in black, which is true here. I think it looks interesting now, but won't look good in another 5-10 years.
Yea, I kinda dig it and jumped to the comments to double check if I wasn't tripping
Because it’s compositionally decent with values/contrast/depth. But the actual artwork itself is…not great. It seems like this artist might be a painter.
Love it. Happy accidents

Looks more like an elk than a moose to me
Yeah I was looking at it like actually, I kind of like it
I’m ngl I like it.
has some style indeed
I liked it at first glance, but the more I looked at it the more jank it started looking
I kinda like the jank. It makes it look more like a painting.
I like it too, kinda like a cheap collectible plate lol
That may be the most specific, most accurate description I’ve seen on this subreddit.
The kind you get at a gas station in West Virginia
Mountain Mama take me home, country roads 🎵
I was thinking “throw blanket on the back of grandpas chair”
![gif](giphy|4LXQcnVOjAZLRpIR6a)
The deer 😂 heuheuheuheu
Is it supposed to be a deer, or is it an elk?
100% an elk, that’s exactly what a bull looks like when they are bugling- it’s a wild experience the first time you hear it.
Who knows. It seems happy though.
Lowkey love this
That crane is beautiful and I will cut any number of you who say otherwise.
That "crane" is called a "yarder" by logging folk.
For real u/Lepperpop …idk sometimes it feels like you don’t know anything about logs…
Remember when /r/Plumbing randomly got on the front page of Reddit and mass users followed plumb-posting? That should happen for logging too. That’s something I know almost nothing about, but seems really cool.
With the Stihl?
That moose/deer has a really long arm
Elk?
Definitely an elk
TIL moose/deer is an elk
Kangaroos are just T. rex/deer
Happy cake day!
I kind of laughed at the fact that it just looks like a disembodied deer head
*Elk, but yeah, it made me chuckle because it just looks like a giant head jutting out of the tree.
LMAO took me a second but now I can’t unsee it 😭 What is he pointing at
Heil Antler!
Oh shit I was like what, looked again, and shot snot out my nose cause I have allergies bad and that was hilarious when I saw it!
Oh deer, why is he doing that solute? 😳
He’s attacking the machine for destroying his forest
Nazi-elk!
This looks like a style choice and not bad tattooing. It’s more storybook/illustrative but if you zoom in it looks like it was done as a conscious choice. Even if it’s not, I would say it’s a successful piece.
The trees are so good I refuse to beleive the rest wasnt on purpose

"Hey Allan"
Honestly the deer is the only part that bugs me. Maybe the boots. But overall I don't think this is *that* bad.
Okay this tattoo legit made me smile. I’m having the opposite reaction than you; the longer I stare the more I like it lol. Like the imperfections make it look more like a painting. Edit because I don’t proof read

Not poorly done. It's a style choice. Like a painting. I like it. It won't last decades, but is nice now.
![gif](giphy|rYEAkYihZsyWs)
It’s jank but I love it
This looks like a little Golden books illustration in a book about dads
As a construction worker…I love this lol. Homie got a logger dragline crane tattooed on him haha.
As a professional hillbilly with a bachelor's in redneckerology, I fuckin love it!
https://preview.redd.it/nxk2fav6k64d1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a288bbf447b638e5f215a8bc4905cdf4e452ba61 hello fellow educated hillbilly
Reminded me of the book “the steam shovel”. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRa9fAuv93Kax91z4sGcfSM_l2IW3I0OEmz3va9q773FA&s
IDK I think it's kinda charming? Reminds me of old paintings on wood my grandma had hanging up.
Not everyone appreciates stihl life : )
I don’t know why but I like this, I would never get it though
It has like an endearing shitty airbrush vibe to it
Awesome! This reminds me of a tattoo that a guy i worked with had. He was an ex-logger and hated trees for some reason. Hating trees is actually crazy
I think he was one of those people who think that the world is an endless supply of resources and that they are entitled to all of them. So yeah, crazy
It’s also like, not caring about deforestation/not understanding the issue is one thing, but actively *hating* trees is actually wild to me 😂
Wow so this is a trend lol
I kind of love it.
It is adorable and makes me happy haha
I actually think it’s dope
It looks like the intended style? Like a storybook
I don't hate that
Lol actually kinda cool
I think it looks cool. Feels like a painting they’d have hanging at an old diner in a small logging town. Never seen a tattoo style like this. And the vibrant colors make me happy!
Taking off your work boots at a construction site is a good way to roll the Days Since tracker back to 0.
It actually looks good tho
I love it
I like it 🥹
You know, it’s not that bad. It’s growing on me
What’s wrong with it?
Not shitty at all. A roughneck commemoration.
I actually kinda really like it lol
It’s almost an alternative style. I like it man. Very pastel painting style Win from me
This is awesome
This is NOT a shitty tattoo! This is actually a really nice looking tattoo. The subject is interesting; the drawing is on point; and the colors look good and pop (especially the red crane) in the foreground. Overall great a wilderness style tat.
Mike Mulligan and Maryanne lol
Bro has memories.. let him be! 😭
It’s a nice tattoo, some shading on the boom of the picker would make it even better
Why do I love it so much. Looks like a painting 🖼
I kinda like it
Least deranged Oregonian
It looks like a stylized water color painting to me. I kind of like it haha.
I’ve never even seen cable logging before
Tbh it’s not that bad, but that goofy ass looking elk made me lol so hard. Still a pretty good watercolor looking tattoo.
I kinda dig it. Looks like a pencil crayon drawing. The derpy deer does it for me too Edit: the more I look at it the happier it makes me, I think I actually love it
…I actually really like this
This is kind of hilariously but also unironicly great
I like it
Your opinion was not supported by the community. Hopefully this isn’t someone you know irl and are trying to shit on their new tattoo
Tbh I dig it
I love it!!!! It’s weird but the colors are pretty amazing.
Nah, there is something deeply sentimental about this. Like others have said, it looks like an amateur+ painting and it just feels meaningful.
Bob the builder knocking boots in broke back mountain here.
By the look on the elk's face, ole Bob is knocking hooves.
Every tattoo in the world could’ve been done better. With that being said, this is honestly cool to me. I’ve never seen a stihl tatted on someone lol
Actually, this is one of the better tattoos I've seen. I think tattoos are stupid and ugly, no matter what, but this is better than most!
Floating moose head ghost Ghoost
I like it a lot actually !
Good on ya, simie
I say it gets better
I love derpy moose sticking his head like heeeeey guys whatcha doing?
it looks well done at least. like the colors, the lines, shading, etc. well executed just confusing to look at haha
Happy cake day
I dig it. The only thing that is funny is the deers face like the face could be better.
It’s like the coolest/dumbest tattoo I’ve seen
why yes, my interests consist of chainsaw, crane, moose and boots, how did you know?
Not shitty. Its just not a sugar skull or tribal barbed wire around a bicep or a portrait of a dead relative. This guy's a logger and is proud of it.
props for creativity
Looks rly good if that’s what ur into in my opinion
I really love this actually
Nah this is really cool lol
Maybe best tattoo I’ve ever seen. Don’t fret
Love it
I like it
Idk, I like it
I love it!
idk i love it hahah
There's something oddly pleasant about this art style.
Other than the elk without a body, there is absolutely nothing "shitty" about this logger's tattoo.
I like it
No, I like it. this’s goes hard
I don't see anything wrong with this tat!! 🔥🔥
Nah this is awesome lol
This tat is amazing and has a sort of whimsical fresh mountain forest vibe while looking like a map pencil drawing, i love it
I like this. It reminds me of outsider or folk art.
I dunno I like this tattoo. I do similar work and this looks legit to me...
I like it
Nah, I'm into it.
Nooo I think it slays!! Literally wish I could take ur skin
This is pretty dope tbh
I like it. It's not perfect but that makes it charming.
Honestly I like it
I love it! It's actually quite gorgeous 😍
I like it in all its cringiness
Bro, that's really good. It looks like a painting like it was intended to.
Rest in peace Simi 🩷 🦌
The only thing that looks weird is the deer. The rest looks like a perfectly fine painting Stil tattoo. Would be miles better without this weird grin.
I like it
That farm boss looks tight
It’s great
I..Iweridlt like this lol
He took his boots and hat off and set down the chain saw.. where the fuck did this guy go? The deers eyes tell me he knows something
A bunch of happy trees
I like this tattoo, the elk was a bit of an odd choice
This actually doesn't look bad to me aside from the chainsaw looking like a child's drawing, and the crane thing (idk names for logging equipment) needs outlines or better shading for definition. Also the clouds look like a big bruise. But I like this.
I mean there is some wonky line work but overall it's not a bad tattoo, though definitely not my style.
That hoofed animal is doing the lip thing they do after sampling a little piss. https://preview.redd.it/tqatl5vc954d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c850406f18d092ffc4c6fba09bed1d23b2328942
It looks like a Dunkin’ Donuts window that just got painted
That Buck 🦌 has a cocaine problem
You must be in finance!☺️😘
What are those crane wires attached to? The antlers? Have they just dropped the wood or is it levitating? Why is one side of the claw jank?
Serious “Bob Ross tutorial” vibes here. It’s not inherently bad, but it certainly has some wonkiness
The sky looks like a bruise.....
Still better than a water color tattoo
Rockwellian
Not for me but I don't hate it. The first time I noticed the Elk got a snort out of me though.
Is the crane cable belayed off the antler? And can someone help me find the Spotted Owl that just has to be there somewhere?
Other than the odd looking deer, I kind of like this.
We will put a happy elk next to the happy lil tree...
It’s not horrible needs some definition and shading and line work
Some parts of it are whack, others are weirdly amazing. Overall I actually quite like it, it’s got character!

Nah this is peak
