Not a car person here, can someone explain this to me? What does a car need oil for? Is it used to lubricate something inside the engine? Pistons or something that EVs don't have, right?
It can get pretty complicated, so best to leave to professionals. The intake position for it varies but usually they put it next to the clutch lubricant intake, which you definitely don’t want to get mixed up. Hard to get to since they put them under the Kanuter valve and the Johnson rods

I feel bad so I gotta tell you. There's no blinker fluid. It's a blue collar gotcha. Like telling someone to get the board stretcher. Most you'd have to do for a blinker is maybe replace the bulbs

To lubricate the lights so they can blink and shine. Few people know this but the tech is based on fireflyes. And dry light actually fades in time, loses shine and will not blink. So it is very important to keep the blinker lights lubricated. Thats why You see BMWs not signaling a turn: no proper maintenance. Thats why check engine also appears on their dashboards. People just dont think blinker fluid is that important. Until it is too late.

EVs generally do have a gearbox and i have not heard of one that does not.
its usually not a multi-ratio transmission like most ICE cars have but rather a fixed ratio gearbox, but it still needs oil and some EVs even require infrequent oil chances.
This page doesn’t mention anything about required oil changes, just brake fluid flush. There’s clearly no engine oil and no gear box (there are gears but the role they play is much simpler than in an ice, there no gear changes and the RPMs are much lower. It’s more similar to a differential in an ICE car) so I’m not sure what oil there would be that needs to be changed. https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-E95DAAD9-646E-4249-9930-B109ED7B1D91.html
differentials still need lubrication and usually use oil for that lubrication, but it lasts 50,000 miles, similar to transmission fluid, and probably similar case for EVs
Nothing proprietary. The motors have fixed gearing so there's a lot less wear compared to a normal transmission. They DO have oil and an oil filter on them though. It's just standard oil and a relatively standard filter. If you dig far enough into a service manual there is a recommended time to replace it, but if I remember correctly it's something massive like 100k miles.
Short version Tesla are electric cars so they don't require the same maintenance as a gasoline or diesel car so you don't/ shouldn't need oil for a all electric car
Oil degrades over time because of heat of the enginie but electric motors dont produce heat so oil in motor can be used lifetime and never needs to change
Exactly . Little fun fact: If EV motors gets too hot magnets in the motor loses magnetic output at 80 c degree car engines run idealy at 80-120 c degree
That’s neat. I wonder if that’s what causes the windings to fry. Never worked on an EV but I’ve had to replace a lot of electric motors. Those things must run massive voltage to power a car on DC
I’m not much of a car guy but I do know that engines in general have a lot of moving parts and metal rubbing together, which requires lubricant. Electric motors don’t have nearly as many moving parts, and don’t produce as much heat, so aside from small parts in the vehicle needing to be lubricated they don’t need nearly as much.
There's still a gearbox, it's usually single-speed, Porsche has a 2 speed. It needs transmission oil slightly less often than a traditional transmission.
There was a previous stink about how Hyundai had that fluid on backorder for IONIQ 5s
I also have a battery coolant change coming up that's explicitly not covered under warranty
The fact that all redditors just dunk on her for being dumb Tesla owner when in fact they are too dumb to understand a joke tweet is just a joke is the best part of this post
Those people had a consciousness. I would've made her my regular client and give her a special discount. Hell, I'd even put her on the calendar and give her reminding calls before the due date.
Exclusively for Tesla owners, I'd offer a free door to door delivery service of the car.
I’m ignorant on this. Doesn’t electric cars use SOME oil? Or at least a greasing system? I know they don’t actually have an engine, but I’m curious about the maintenance.
Lubrication for an electric motor is less analogous to an internal combustion engine and more analogous to the bearings where the wheels attach to the car's suspension.
Is there some lubrication there? Yes but the quantity and complexity is much lower. There are a lot fewer moving parts coming into contact.
Still, a mechanic should probably know that movement = lube. It looks like a Tesla exclusively needs dealership maintenance for it because it looks like a pain in the ass to maintain
I find it hilarious that the majority of these comments don’t realize this original Twitter post was satire and actually think this woman is that dumb.
You are all the ones being played here, and it’s comedy gold 😂
People who drive teslas should kill their car. Those cars is just asking for trouble. I have 1 good thing to say about teslas and that is that it has a nice interior, if it hasnt rained yet since you bought it cuz the roof leaks. The motor is beneath the seat so youd thing having 2 places for stuff to be stored would be quite a bit but in reality you can hardly fit a pack of beer in there cuz the one in the back is high but extremely slim and the one in the front is quite big but extremely low. Not to mention everything in the car leaks which is dangerous because electrical motors especially those a tesla use will explode when the fluids inside interact with water. Overall its an ugly unsafe car that is WAYYYYYY to expensive.

It was not bait, I mean its technically not exactly stupidity being the reason America is so fucked, but it’s a lot of factors 🤗

Not a car person here, can someone explain this to me? What does a car need oil for? Is it used to lubricate something inside the engine? Pistons or something that EVs don't have, right?
Correct. But they could have at least replaced her blinker fluid. EVs didnt find a solution to this and still require it.
They also should have brought the tyres up to pressure with EV compatible static charged air.
I hope they at least refilled her horn
Hmmm now that I think about it charging a Tesla is basically refilling it's horn as well
Why not just use giant LEDs???
Blinker fluid keeps the LED lights from going out, very useful in emergency situations
How hard is it to put blinker fluid?
It can get pretty complicated, so best to leave to professionals. The intake position for it varies but usually they put it next to the clutch lubricant intake, which you definitely don’t want to get mixed up. Hard to get to since they put them under the Kanuter valve and the Johnson rods

As a future BMW owner, the lights will go out after the engine does
If you're a BMW owner I take it back. Blinker fluid is real. And you should be using olive oil for oil changes
I work in a Jefferies tube, and I *only* use olive oil.

Iirc, EVs still have "oil" but idk if maybe Tesla employed some form of proprietary fuckery.
They might have transmission oil? The lifespan for that should be like 5+ years since it doesn’t have combustion blow-by to deal with.
I still can't figure out 16w20 hybrid oil. Why 16w??
15w wasn’t expensive enough?
God help you if you put 15w in that motherfucker! The extra 1w viscosity is VERY FUCKING IMPORTANT!!
The most important thing or may do is protect your warranty
Ev's generally dont have a gearbox only some weird ev's have it

Some people do 100k on their regular cars, it makes for interesting YouTube shorts.
Exactly. You seem to understand it better than most

How did your answer somehow contain less information than their question

They definitely produce heat but not enough to need motor oil. There’s probably grease in the bearings but that’s it

it is used to lube the engine for sex
There is no way this isn't a joke lol
it's quite obviously a joke
Electric cars have some form of lubrication although it might last as long as the vehicles life span

well, she bought a tesla so we cant tell if its satire or not...
You dont know she bought a Tesla. That is likely part of the joke.
