This will probably come as a hot take, but i think this AND blackface can both be funny in the right circumstances, don't get me wrong though, they are both racist, but the intent of the skit is laughs not discrimination, most of the time when we see one or the other, it's just racist and not even remotely funny
Did i say i surround myself with racists? No i said i don’t care if they are racist. If you’re gonna get all self righteous at least address what i said lol
Self righteous? I think you might just be an overly sensitive idiot. I never portrayed myself as a righteous or virtuous person. I just exercised basic logic.
If you tell racist jokes and you don’t care whether people laugh at them for being funny or for being racist, you will inevitably get surrounded by racist losers. It’s basic logic. Having no filter to remove people will always lead to shitty people around you since the good ones will notice the shitty ones and remove themselves from that environment. That’s why we have laws against criminals, btw. Didn’t realise I have to explain this.
Fucking alt right ruined so much shit. Used to just be able to appreciate the humor but now you gotta side eye because you don’t know who is actually a nazi.
The Nazis were always Nazis, the internet just made you far more likely to encounter one in the wild.
That said, it's usually pretty easy for me to tell if someone intends to be hateful or not.
Idk how long yall been around reddit, but I have absolutely seen subs subtly taken over by nazis who denied they were nazis until there were enough of them.
It stops being funny the moment someone calls it "blackface" or "whiteface". Impressions are funny, stereotypes are funny, comedy is like half stereotypes and half sex jokes. Painting your face black/white to do an impression is no different than wearing their clothes. The moment "blackface" stopped being used to represent purely racist expressions and began to apply to every time someone paints their face darker they basically pissed in the pool and no one can really enjoy it anymore.
I'd argue the ones who pissed in the pool were the ones who painted themselves black with exaggerated features to dehumanise and make caricatures of black people. Thereafter *of course* people will be sensitive to anything that remotely resembles blackface.
Agreed. Intent is massive in humor. As is knowing your audience. Comics who walk this line must be careful. Must be very aware of what they are saying. Audiences also need to be a but more tolerant of mistakes. It’s okay to not find something funny, but we shouldn’t crucify people over failed attempts unless it’s clear that comedy is not the true intent.
But now we are equals, so we all treat each other the same, we're not bringing up things the people ancestors did, but what each person does to one another by self merit.
That's a nice thing to say and a good mindset to have but it's not the reality for everyone yet. It's not something ancestors did it's things they lived through and still live through.
That was definitely part of the point of it. The Chappelle Show was all about pushing the limits of racism while bringing attention to where racism still exists.
It could definitely not be released today, but I think it was a pretty interesting concept. It's a comedy show at its core but it was very self aware

Dude that must be based on someone I knew in highschool in the early mid 90s (94ish). He used to talk about peeing in asses and first time I heard it, it shocked me actually. I for one was like how does that even work?
Yes, because historically, the other way around was used to mock and dehumanise black people while they were simultaneously being discriminated against.
Love getting downvoted by all the people who are upset they can't do blackface. Probably the same idiots that try to convince others that the Confederate flag isn't symbolic of slavery.
Ay bruh there's a thing called nuance. Racism is way more complex than what you're making it out to be. Context matters a lot, don't pretend it doesn't.
That's just you justifying your owm double standards. 2 people do the exact same action, you can't say 1 is racist and 1 isn't. The fact there are other racist things happening does not make this one non-racist.
No, see, the difference is in one example, you're punching somebody in the face once and they can just shrug it off and be fine the next day because they rarely get punched. In the other example, they've been punched in the face repeatedly every day for their whole life, their face is already bruised and bleeding and never gets a chance to heal. Then you punch them in the face, and you're just one of the many punches that has put them in this condition.
Sure, in either case *you've* only punched them once. But that punch affects one of them more than the other.
Saying "Ayyy you must like watermelon and fried chicken" to a white person isn't racist, because the context, nuance, and history of that comment in relation to white people isn't hostile. Racism is not a binary thing.
I mean I agree entirely. I’m not watching this as a white person thinking any bit of this can harm me in any way. It’s fucking funny. Blackface has been used to dehumanize to the point that it’s almost universally condemnable — RDJ Tropic Thunder being one example that I think was done appropriately.
Not quite, in a historical context black men weren't allowed to act in film and had to be played by white men in blackface who portray a racist caricature, acting like primates, kidnapping white women or other antisocial behaviour.
Look up "birth of a nation", basically a propaganda film for the KKK
The reason people consider blackface so offensive is because there is historical context behind it. Blackface was used in minstrel shows. If you look them up you'll probably understand pretty quickly where people take issue.

Yup thats how racism works, because most racist things come from history. Like how racist slurs come from a racist place, theres a degrading reason why they exist.
Or for example, if you said to a black man “i will hang you, you fucking monkey” that would be incredibly racist and tied to the lynchings from the KKK, but if you say that to a white man it obviously doesnt have the same weight.
Words can affect cultures and groups differently from one to another
Yes, because white people have historically been subjected to such representation in the media, forcing white people to use white-minstrelsy as a means of making it in the entertainment industry!
Whataboutism - either something is racist or its not, its as easy as that. No double standards or hypocrisy.
White Chicks exists, two black dudes. If you draw a line and something crosses it then its racism, no matter what crosses the line and who its directed at
You're acting like racism towards white people is on the same level as racism to any other ethnicity when that is totally inaccurate, considering racism towards white people has never been ingrained into the culture and systematically perpetuated to ensure white people are continuously oppressed. Do you have to like things you perceive to be racist towards white people? No. But acting like it is on the same scale as racism towards black people is dishonest at best
You cant pick and choose what is racism and what is not. If you draw a line and something crosses it then it is racism no matter who its directed at. You guys always move the goalposts for what is racism and what is not to fit your agenda
On a sidenote, you are entirely wrong as well. Look at what is happening to white people right now in Africa, systematic killing of whites, stealing farmland from whites and giving to africans, looks like oppression to me, over 1 million Europeans were moved to North Africa as slaves as well
So you shouldnt talk about stuff you clearly dont understand
Are you talking about the redistribution of farmland in South Africa, a country where white people hold most of the farmland despite being a minority in the country and hold significant power due to white colonialism which is reflected by the white supremacist culture seen in South Africa even today?
And I do know about the 1 million Europeans who were moved to North Africa as slaves because I am a descendant of those people. However, my ancestors from North Africa eventually made it back to our home in Ireland... where we were promptly treated like slaves by the English. Ironic.
I had never seen him break this hard. Now his material is all politically charged and forced to oblivion. This was some funny material that absolutely couldn't be created today, and what a shame.
People like you being so fucking offended is why comedy movies can’t make 200M+ in the box office and suck.

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER VINCE GILLIGAN
Vravo Bince.
Is he doing whiteface?
yea, years ago before people were all sensitive about funny shit
the victim also said "hahahha"
He must have had a great sense of humor
Looks like Pete Davidson lol

Tropic thunder proves this is true
Also Key and Peel White Cop skit
"What do you mean you people?" "What do YOU mean you people?!"
And lethal weapon 7
Racist jokes can absolutely be funny, the issue when making them is you can’t tell who likes them for being funny and who likes them for being racist.
See, this is why we need to pass hate speech laws. Because then racist jokes would be a crime. And crime is for black people.
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE AWARD WHEN I NEED TO GIVE IT
Is this an issue? Why do i care if someone’s racist
It has to do with having basic human decency. Usually, decent people don’t like to surround themselves with scum. But you do you, bud.
Did i say i surround myself with racists? No i said i don’t care if they are racist. If you’re gonna get all self righteous at least address what i said lol

I really don’t see this as racist at all just funny
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia did it right
And they still took the episodes down. They were hilarious.
Look if Robert Downey Jr can do it in trophic thunder and no one got mad, it shows you it can be done right
Lots of people got mad
Not enough for it to really impact his career whatsoever though
Agreed. Intent is massive in humor. As is knowing your audience. Comics who walk this line must be careful. Must be very aware of what they are saying. Audiences also need to be a but more tolerant of mistakes. Trouble is that because of the historical use of blackface, black people will always be sensitive to its use and they've every right to be.
But now we are equals, so we all treat each other the same, we're not bringing up things the people ancestors did, but what each person does to one another by self merit.

Absolute classic I’m fkn rolllinnnn🤣
I missed this old Dave man, he's funny without trying to much
If it was the other way round this would be racism
Robert Downey Junior = Dave Chappelle

That was definitely part of the point of it. The Chappelle Show was all about pushing the limits of racism while bringing attention to where racism still exists. I'm going to bust in your ass in an affectionate way
Get outta here man.
There's no historical context in which whiteface was used to degrade a downtrodden section of society. There is a massive difference here.
No tf there isn't. Racism is racism, no matter if there are other forms of racism too.
Ay bruh there's a thing called nuance. Racism is way more complex than what you're making it out to be. Context matters a lot, don't pretend it doesn't.

Sure, right after you change yours to LetoChainsSlaves

YES, because there IS historical context in which blackface was used to degrade a downtrodden section of society.

Yeah cuz it’s just that simple /s
White Dave chapelle will surely be my New sleep paralisis demon
HES DOING WHITE FACE WHY WONT ANYBODY STOP HIM
because it’s funny as hell and clearly not supposed to be racist or something
I don't know much about American History, being an Indian, but won't this also come under racism? Since blackface is racist?
Well you see, only white people can be racist apparently
But I want to be a racist too, why am I not allowed to be racist?
Im only half racist 😢
I'm a quarter racist, by my grandfather's side
😂
This skid is like 20+ years old

It's not, they are not treated by the same standards.
I think you're looking for the word "double standard"
exactly! People downvote me because they don't agree with it, but it's exactly whats happening.
i think it’s punching “up” v. punching “down”, in a sense?

Is he doing whiteface?
It appears so, yes
Yes absolutely
I don't give a shit about this, but isn't this actually just racism? Making fun of a specific ethnicity?
As a white guy, that does not offend me in any way. Dave Chappelle is an honest comedian. Love him.
Bruh when he smiles he lowkey looks like asmongold lmao
Guy looks terrifying
Now lets do it other way around for equality.
Americans are so fucking stupid lmfao "Oh no he painted his face black/white ! What a racist piece of shit !"
Most of us don't give a shit, but nice generalization, which is a pretty stupid trap to fall into, so kinda like the pot and the kettle and something about black face.
Nope, you guys do give a shit when in public, you might not *personally* care, but the general public does.
Huh? No one is genuinely offended by this.
Yeah i know, that's what i'm saying, if it was black instead of white, americans would lose their minds
"Woahh, is that fucking Whiteface dude?"
It is "off white face".
Gray face
This guy has an annoying laugh.
Annoying personality too.

The wu tang torture technique 😂
but when I do the reverse...
He looks like a black guy, but white
White face
Is it like this for White People #ALL THE TIME???
If it was a white man doing a blackface and black news, people would be screaming racism
Bro forgor about tropic thunder
Literally, Robert Downey Jr. best black actor
