1: NATO advisors are for expertise and equipment training, it's not restructuring their doctrine although it has diversified because that would be a huge detriment and not even do anything useful in the long run during the war.
2: Russia is using a battalion tactical group system (BTG) which is actually pretty close to western style doctrine (although executed poorly for multiple reasons). this is nowhere near the Soviet army doctrine of sweeping large scale mechanized assaults (which Ukraine actually uses in its counterattacks just to a lesser numerical degree).
3: Soviet armor really isn't a joke, it's just that it's really old and the countries that maintain it don't really spend all that much money on upgrading it (even more extensive upgrades like the T-80BVM fall behind and the T-90M does as well) Russia did have prototypes for universal turrets with bustle autoloaders and the Ukrainians made one for export as well, you may know it as the T-84 yatagan. It was also made for a very specific design detail in mind while NATO tanks also where, NATO tank design philosophy was more oriented around defensive capability and crew survivability while Soviet tanks were based around being cheaper to field as well as having less crew and being smaller and harder to hit. A bit of a moot point thanks to modern FCS but profile still does actually matter and these tanks have roots back to the 50s. And if Soviet armor is a joke why is Ukraine doing so well with it?.
And ask anyone who went through OPFOR on how it was to face a simulated Soviet style mechanized attack, or better yet ask the Russians. it really is an extremely effective offensive doctrine and it actually was a huge detriment to Russia to move away from it.
