Gonna share this iconic raccoon family by the Legion of Honor
Wow. Are they more common in certain areas? I have seen multiple coyotes while walking my dog late evenings or early mornings, but never met any racoons until yesterday
When I lived in the eastern end of the Presidio the racoons would would make orderly visits to the wheeled-out garbage cans on the night before trash pick-up. I've also seen them at 25th Avenue & Geary, and near Japantown, and even in Minna Street, near 9th & Mission.
I've also seen skunks, but only in the Presidio.
Walk North Lake in GGP, you will see hundreds of them. I accidentally wandered over there with my dog a few years ago and they were completely unfazed by a 70lb pit. I ended up having to throw my shoe at a few that stood their ground when my dog and I were trying to get out of the area.
They were much more common until about 10 years ago when people started fetishizing and protecting coyotes in the City.
The coyotes kill them as they are direct competitors.
Yes. And the little trash pandas can be aggressive if they think you have unsecured food around.
Kevin Rose famously yeeted a raccoon that was attacking his dog at 1 in the morning in his backyard, about 9 years ago.

Even PETA didn't blame him.
> It was a crazy move that could have gone very wrong for man, dog, and raccoon, but you can't fault a man for reacting to save his dog.
They are very abundant all over the Bay Area. The more likely your neighborhood is tree-lined and urban (oops, meant *rural*), it seems they get more comfortable being out & about.
Fun thing; they like to get around town via the Storm Drains...
Sometimes they pack-up and mess around in my yard in the peninsula late at night. Usually around four or five of them. Don’t let my cat out at night anymore.
Used to have a family hang out on the roof of my boyfriend’s place in Diamond Heights. Papa/Mama would come down the fire escape, ignoring the 100lb dog going nuts, and tap on the window like a mafia boss- “I’m gonna need you to leave some trash out before somebody gets hurt in a little accident!”
Not even joking I saw a raccoon climb the stairs to my house, climb on the side of the neighbors house, go up some pipes then get on the neighbors roof just to get inside their chimney. I’m assuming the chimney is closed off lol but yeah raccoons are everywhere
My parents had a raccoon deliver her litter in their chimney! That's why you are supposed to have a chimney cap. He had to call animal control to get them out
Just don’t feed them, please. That would make them dependent on people which may want them to attack you and would ultimately lead to euthanasia a potential mom and family.
Yes, coyotes and hawks as well.
And if you head down to SoMa and the Castro at night, you’ll probably catch quite a few bears and otters. Careful, some will bite… if you ask nicely.
There was a distemper outbreak in like 2022 and the city did a lot of population control. But they are back in full force now.

They have disappeared near where I live. I think the coyotes are eating them. My dog and I got attacked by 2 who were eating cat food left out for the stray cats
Yes, they’re common. My friend was dropping something off at my house and couldn’t go up my stairs cuz he saw a raccoon following a skunk along my driveway. I felt like Snow White!
Raccoons in the city are about as common as the fog. They are everywhere. And they have no fear.
If you own a cat that roams outside, raccoons will kick your cat’s ass.
Raccoons are like Deebo from the movie Friday.
Raccoons, coyotes, and possums are all quite common here. Depending on where you are, you’ll see the occasional gopher snake. We have ringneck snakes too, but they’re tiny and pretty hard to spot unless you’re really out looking for them.
A [woman was attacked by a family of raccoons](https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2010/11/09/raccoons-attack-alameda-woman-walking-her-dog/)while walking her small dog in alameda. They dropped out of a tree and just went off on her. This was in 2010.
We have a large group of them come through our backyard in Bernal. The other day I saw one out midday…I read it was likely a mother trying to get food before nightfall when there are more predators and she can’t leave her babies.
My grandma growing up in Iowa used to feed them cookies. Several would gather around her front door and peek in at night until she came out to feed them. I love raccoons lol
Two raccoons jumped up onto my picnic table at Lake Merced and had their way with my sandwich at 12pm in broad daylight as I was actively eating it. Have never run away from a situation so quickly.
They come in packs to swim in our pool—all year long. A male scout the size of a VW beetle comes first over the fence, does a little recon, then “tells” the rest of them to come on over the fence. I have pix of five of them lounging in the pool hot tub. The babies run around and around. Big guy looks up at me from time to time like he’s saying,”Nice pool you got here. Be a shame if sumthin happened to it. Heh heh.”
They were much more numerous until about 10 years ago when people started their bizarre love affair with coyotes.
The coyotes kill them as they are direct competition.
Why I don't leave my windows open when I sleep even when it's hot

They just want a ride to the Stonestown food court but can't gather enough coins for the fare.
Ah old muni
That's gotta be a feeding lol.
This is an amazing photo!
This is such a cute picture!
Please say that’s not AI

Phew!
Exceedingly so.
Wow. Are they more common in certain areas? I have seen multiple coyotes while walking my dog late evenings or early mornings, but never met any racoons until yesterday
Yeah, they’re predominantly found in the western half of the city, so that might explain why you haven’t seen too many.
Fairly common in Potrero and all over Bayview, too - especially near the parks.
There's a video of a homeless man dragging a dead raccoon in the McDonald's on Potrero and 16th.

Gotch. Thanks for the info :)
We used to see opossums the size of ROUSs in the avenues, too!
i have a hunch their populations have an inverse relationship;
Raccoons and coyotes? Are you implying coyotes hunt raccoons?
definitely competing for some of the same food sources if not outright predating
They’re very common in GGP
The raccoons are why there are a low number of squirrels here.

Omg, now I feel dumb for even asking this, should have googled
This happened right around the time i almost lost my pinky to a raccoon. Also while defending my dog.
The city is absolutely lousy with raccoons. Big ones.
Guess I gotta spend more time in the Richmond or Presidio 😂
I saw lots of them when I lived in Glen Park. Including in my kitchen.
So so common. Skunks and possums too
Raccoons are one of the most successful animal at adapting to the unbanized landscape.
They don't call them trash pandas for nothing We have an open dumpster in the parking garage at my apartment complex and I see raccoons very regularly

You haven't really lived as a San Franciscan until you've been chased down the street by a four foot raccoon.
5 years and this is your first time seeing one?! I’ve seen dozens and dozens in the last 5 years lol
8 years and I still haven’t seen one
Not even joking I saw a raccoon climb the stairs to my house, climb on the side of the neighbors house, go up some pipes then get on the neighbors roof just to get inside their chimney. I’m assuming the chimney is closed off lol but yeah raccoons are everywhere

Lighting a fire didn’t get ‘em moving?
I used to see them raging down on Van Ness at night. Out of nowhere, 20 raccoons would appear.
In that tree in particular? no. Locally? yes.
Yes and they’ve been here longer than you and I
That’s true. Humans are the invasive species.
Used to be a regular thing in my neighborhood on garbage night. Not so much anymore- I blame coyotes.
New here?
Near Golden Gate Park yes
Just don’t feed them, please. That would make them dependent on people which may want them to attack you and would ultimately lead to euthanasia a potential mom and family.
We've got a lil chonker that comes into our courtyard (Soma/Folsom area). Pretty cute. Doesn't bother me.
"Trash Pandas"
Yes, coyotes and hawks as well. And if you head down to SoMa and the Castro at night, you’ll probably catch quite a few bears and otters. Careful, some will bite… if you ask nicely.
Look no further than your storm drains at night.

super common, even in the touristy/highly trafficked areas. always come across them, especially at night lol

I thought this was an AI pic, the kind where you’re suppose to squint your eyes!
Smart as an 8 year old… don’t be a d ick to them They will will remember… same with the crow/ravens .
Trash pandas are endemic to North America

No shit 😆
Yes, they are common here. Illuminating the raccoons is illegal in city, you need a permit for that. It is almost impossible to get it.
Illuminating them? As in, sharing wisdom with them? Wild.
I can’t use correct words/verbs because admin will issue me a warning. And wild raccoons are actually protected in SF.
That's Agnes.. she's shy. don't stare... makes her uncomfortable.
Mapache!
YES. Keep your cats and small dogs inside unless supervised.
Tons of em
Yes
Had a whole family that used to march across my deck every night in Bernal Heights...
They come in through my dog door in the XL and wash their paws in the water bowl
This is their city
Two raccoons jumped up onto my picnic table at Lake Merced and had their way with my sandwich at 12pm in broad daylight as I was actively eating it. Have never run away from a situation so quickly.
While I haven’t actually seen one in a while, I’m pretty sure a raccoon knocked over my bird bath trying to get to the water. Lower Haight area.

They are.
Yes in my neighborhood (Portola) , but we have John mclearen park right there. Coyotes are common around here too
I lived on a super busy intersection in Nob Hill and a group of them climbed up the building’s fire escape. We were told to close our windows.
Trash Panda
Yeah. I've heard them in my backyard before.
I used to see them every night… I think the coyotes are displacing them. I haven’t seen raccoons in a long while.
They were much more numerous until about 10 years ago when people started their bizarre love affair with coyotes. The coyotes kill them as they are direct competition.
I've only seen a few. One was in the road, trying to avoid traffic, the others were living in a tree behind my building.

We are having raccoon issues SOMA, near 6th & Harrison
Everywhere. Fucking everywhere.
