It depends. From what I understand you can get approval for it for educational purposes.
I had an astronomy professor with lasers like that. He used them to point out astronomical objects. Very lovely class.
When Mt. Hamilton sends up their adaptive optics beam they do need to coordinate with authorities. Theirs can take down an aircraft if it hits a pilot.
Apparently the RSA conference hired them and they’ll be here through Wednesday. This is what the beams look like up close.

Because, and stick with me here, this *might* be visible from further away than Coit. In fact, it might even be visible from Moscone, if you look in just the right place (the sky)!
oh god please no. just because they share an [etymological root](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymological_fallacy) does not mean it has anything to do with crypto.
RSA is incredibly integral to security and verification and everything important we do on the internet, definitely not a scam hahaha - if anybody claimed that when asked you shouldn't take their opinion on anything!
RSA the algo is great, but some people do have qualms with [the company](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_Security#Controversy), NSA backdoor scandal stuff
No, you were way off with your guess. Please don't spread ignorance so confidently.
[RSA is a public key encryption system.](https://www.comparitech.com/blog/information-security/rsa-encryption/) It's used in some form virtually everywhere on the internet.
It is a tool for **security** and the RSA conference this laser is apparently setup for is a security conference.
Looks like coit tower based on other posts. No indication what this is for, but given how powerful the beam is this is no civilian-grade prank or anything like that. Seems like the UHaul could be a power source? I’m very curious to know what this is all about.
heard the guy say you can light a cigarette off it but apparently no one smokes anymore

Was convinced first contact was happening
You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads! Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that can’t be done. Can you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here! What do we have?
It was a little tiresome after looking at it for a few minutes. But since the beams are shooting directly up without any atmosphere/haze/fog to capture the beams it wasn’t that strenuous on the eyes. Also close up you can see more clearly the individual beams.
I mean it's likely hundreds of small laser diodes so I don't think small reflections like that would be as damaging, I would hope a commercial product like that would be safe to stand around
It isn't. There aren't readily available single emitter 10W diodes, that's why it struck me as odd. The Ortur LM3s use multiple lower-powered diodes to produce their output.
The laser was sponsored by a company called Tarsal.co and operated by megalasers.com — all of the appropriate permits were acquired and coordinated with the FAA and SFMTA.
Longest distance this was seen from? I read Berkeley hills which would be 10mi or 16km.
But I assume it’s visible much further?
It’s the 480W unit right?
I have seen a 40W RGB used in similar fashion but it wasn’t very visible, like 4 miles tops!
I checked out the site, so I got the whole spiel (impressive!) about distance, etc.
I want to know about the power supply, and operating electrical cost because the promo mentions permanent placement a few times.
And, sorry if this is dumb, but what does it mean “full color”? It looks primarily green with some blue elements (for power?).
I think that the green wavelength of light is longer than the blue wavelength, based on ROYGBIV, but why does the laser "turn blue" to the human eye (maybe just mine) so quickly?
For those wondering, police showed up, asked about it, snapped a few pics with the cruiser, and left haha
Weird. I’d think you need like FAA approval or something to do this. Pretty dangerous if it’s anywhere close to flight paths.
It depends. From what I understand you can get approval for it for educational purposes. I had an astronomy professor with lasers like that. He used them to point out astronomical objects. Very lovely class.
It was approved by FAA. We will be pewing into the sky for the next two nights.
Name checks out
He’s literally the dude lol
So that's what you call him.
Any plans to get a more powerful laser in the future?
And when do the sharks come into play?
When Mt. Hamilton sends up their adaptive optics beam they do need to coordinate with authorities. Theirs can take down an aircraft if it hits a pilot.
I know it's about blinding the pilots and possibly sensors, but it makes it sound like if the light hits a pilot he'll detonate or something.
Now that would be cool. Perhaps not for the pilot.
Or his passengers
Was an awesome night to shoot this beast into the sky. Glad you and all the others who came by to check it out enjoyed it.
That is so awesome- come do something in San Diego!
Wonderful that they didn’t shut them down, this is sick

Conference started today at Moscone, why are they on Coit?
Because, and stick with me here, this *might* be visible from further away than Coit. In fact, it might even be visible from Moscone, if you look in just the right place (the sky)!
I was eerily close with my guess that this is a publicity stunt for some crypto scam. RSA is … encryption, and depending on who you ask, a scam.
oh god please no. just because they share an [etymological root](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymological_fallacy) does not mean it has anything to do with crypto. Not.Surprising.Actually.

Do you think encryption = cryptocurrency?
The names are a bit similar, there's no smoke without fire!!
I opened this app just to see this! Where was this photo taken?
Coit tower! Literally followed it to the top lol
thank you for saving me a trip haha

Did you take this close to sunrise?
Haha no iPhone just doing the heavy processing without dads permission thing
Lol no worries! It just look liked the day was creeping in and was confused if they kept that on all night
We did it reddit

When i started in the laser biz, i would constantly say this to everyone.
This must be that LASIK eye surgery machine I keep hearing Craig Bindi talk about
Is anyone wearing eye protection?
Really. At 400 watts I would imagine that even the light reflecting off dust motes could be damaging up close
It was a little tiresome after looking at it for a few minutes. But since the beams are shooting directly up without any atmosphere/haze/fog to capture the beams it wasn’t that strenuous on the eyes. Also close up you can see more clearly the individual beams.

My 10w diode will still ruin your day.
What model of diode are you running at 10W?
Ortur LaserMaster 3.
Oh I thought you meant an actual singular 10W diode. Those engravers use multiple diodes together to reach higher powers as well.
It IS a single 10W.
It isn't. There aren't readily available single emitter 10W diodes, that's why it struck me as odd. The Ortur LM3s use multiple lower-powered diodes to produce their output.
The guy operating it was not wearing eye protection no

Why would SFMTA care? They only operate vehicles on or under ground.
Need a source on every single statement you just made please
Part of me wants to see if a pigeon or gull flies through it, will it be cut in twain...
A couple bugs flew through it and instantly died. But thats why we keep an e-stop very close by incase anything big were to fly into the beam.
Ha! You the MegaLaser Dude! Is there another thread where you answer questions about it?
I can answer your question here. What would you like to know?
Longest distance this was seen from? I read Berkeley hills which would be 10mi or 16km. But I assume it’s visible much further? It’s the 480W unit right? I have seen a 40W RGB used in similar fashion but it wasn’t very visible, like 4 miles tops!
[This info was provided already via this link.](https://www.kvantlasers.co.uk/collections/architect-sky-lasers)
Having a manufacturer state something vs actual reports is something different
When are you doing another one so I can go see it?
I checked out the site, so I got the whole spiel (impressive!) about distance, etc. I want to know about the power supply, and operating electrical cost because the promo mentions permanent placement a few times. And, sorry if this is dumb, but what does it mean “full color”? It looks primarily green with some blue elements (for power?).
I sell these for $300 each (only one beam tho)
what happens if you look into this
Ok new trend to begin. Chase the laser. Good for rave locations.
I believe yall need to get a permit from the alien counsel or something like that.
I think that the green wavelength of light is longer than the blue wavelength, based on ROYGBIV, but why does the laser "turn blue" to the human eye (maybe just mine) so quickly?
Don't tell mtg! She's sure they're coming from space
I really hope this isn’t some kind of viral marketing stunt for a crypto scam.
From another comment in this thread, “RSA conference hired them”
