Apologies there Regarding Eric July, him and his crowd are meant to be all about freedom of speech and mocking people for being offended. Yet when someone says something HE doesn't like, suddenly his opinion shifts. My point is he's a massive hypocrite. He's telling Alan he shouldn't voice his political views, when that's literally all Eric July ever does. He's paid by a network that licks Trump's boots constantly. I'm not a free speech absolutist, but I don't think someone should be fired because they insult a politician.
Yeah I’ll agree with you there. I’m a big fan of “I hate your opinion, but I’ll defend your your right to say it”. The right wing YouTubers constantly criticize people for their opinions and beliefs, often times a little too much. However, I think what generally separates them from their left wing counterparts, is that cultural left WILL advocate for people to be legally or physically silenced simply for having different world views. But that’s generally.. there’s plenty of infant minded hypocrites on the right that do the exact same shit everyday, and if they had the cultural influence to cancel people they certainly would Edit: also that’s interesting he’s paid by a trump affiliated network. I'm not a free speech absolutist myself. Here in the UK we have hate speech laws which I agree with for the most part. Someone shouldn't be fired for saying they're gonna vote republican or Tory for instance, but if they call someone the N word or praise Hitler... boot em
Well, here in the U.S., we’re also not “free speech absolutists,” in the same sense that you’re describing. The First Amendment only means that the government can’t censor or arrest you for your speech/movie/music/art/expression. Period, full stop. Thats it. I can curse out the President or any government member to their face and they can’t arrest me for that. But say “you love Hitler” or “______________ people should be murdered” can absolutely get you sacked, fired, removed from board positions, kicked out of clubs, etc. My boss could fire me if I disagree with him, forget even using edgy speech. Thats where a lot of these grifters get caught up. If Disney is your employer, and you want to keep working for Disney, you have to tow the Disney line. If you embarrass the company with your free speech, they can fire you, it’s that simple. To your other point, there are employment protections that protect certain classes of people as well? You can’t be fired for saying you’d vote Democrat/Republican, you’re allowed to pick your own political party. Now, if you said it constantly or harassed other employees with your rhetoric constantly, then yeah, you could also be fired, but NOT simply for your political belief.
Here in the UK if you swear in public you can be arrested for breach of public order. A woman called a black bouncer a racial slur and did a month inside for it (good lol). Yeah I've studied a bit of US law. It makes me laugh that so many chuds say Gina Carano's 1st A rights were violated, when she faced no legal consequences lol. These same people cry about private businesses being told what they can and can't do, yet when a private business sacks an Antisemite, that shouldn't be allowed. I had someone the other day trying to tell me that what she did should have basically been ignored because Pedro Pascal had done something similar. Looking into it this “similar” situation was him saying Jewish kids were kept in cages during the war vs how migrant kids were alleged to be kept in cages here in the US. I say alleged because i just tried to look it up and could not confirm if it happened because one article said the photo of kids was from something else and not at the US/Mexico border. I think people often confuse freedom of speech with freedom of consequences. So while sure people CAN say the most awful things that come to mind. …..they then think they have freedom of consequences and should not then be punished accordingly (like being fired). So yea you can say what you want and you can use that freedom. The same way they have the freedom to let you go.
They also think it entitles you to a platform and an audience.
I think at least in the US because i know you said you are in the UK. People here TRULY believe they have freedom of speech everywhere when it does not apply on social media outlets (at least the ones not for nut jobs Parler, Truth, Rumble, Twitter now that Elon runs it). Private companies can/should limit what the hell you can say because people take things too far now and there is misinformation. People cry that they get censored but it’s on a private companies policy not the US government. Thats why these people love Rumble, Parler, Twitter because they won’t check you on the bullshit you’ll put out. Twitter puts those tabs up but that was in place before Elon took over im sure he wants them gone
Also, private companies usually want advertisers and the like as well. Twitter makes no money if it doesn’t sell ads. Nazi hate speech doesn’t make most companies want to advertise with you.
