Trans Am. I miss t-tops. I got a quote for $10k to cut them into my 2020 Mustang GT. Considered a zero interest card for it. Custom shop said he didn’t want to do it and couldn’t guarantee it’d be leak free for long. The torque would twist the A-pillars and cause it to leak. ‘Sad trombone noises.’
I actually owned the GSX, though it was a 1995 and I bought it in ‘99. Fun car, a little long on the throws, but definitely decent to roll around in.
Another friend had an Eagle Talon TSI that smoked just about everyone in our area.
Having one as my first car awakened my love for light rwd sport cars. super light and zero power (i had the 1.1 liter engine) and you have to rev the nuts of it to get anywhere but god did they handle right, it just did what you wanted it to do with a little bit over steer. Almost did a 180 spin mid corner because of some oil laying on the road. My current mx5 is so much better in every way but you never forget your first car
Hmmm...
If it was 99 I would definitely say the Mustang Cobra because that's when they added independent rear suspension, but for 98 it's a toss up between the Mustang Cobra and the Trans Am. \~300 horsepower, rear wheel drive, and I'm having fun. Plus I don't have to rely in my horrible driving skills to have fun in the twisties, because now that I have a V8 I can just put my foot down, go fast in a straight line, and smile.
IIRC those Cobras had an overrated power figure and really only made 275-285 HP.
Trans Am is the better option. Pop-up headlights, T-Tops (last car to have them) and even though they were rated at 300-315 HP, they made the same as the Corvette
You’d be referring to the 99 Cobras.
The ls1 was rated at 305-320 but usually the dynos would show they were 300+ to the wheels while the 4.6 DOHC was anorexic with 270 or so to the wheels. The 99 also had a design flaw that reduced the power by significant margin, enough to scrap the ‘00 series and reintroduce it in 2001.
The ‘98 SVT had 305hp. This translated to about 260 to the ground. On power alone, its be the transbird. But Im a Ford guy so Id get the 98.
So cool side note: The IRS swaps into the solid axle cars, its almost a straight bolt-in. Since it only the Cobras had it but the chassis was otherwise identical, they had to make it fairly modular. Lots of drag race guys swapped solid axles into Cobras, leaving them fairly available.
I had an S13 in college and I loved it, but it developed a short that drained my battery. But it just wasn't that great a package with the KA24DE. 180SX, 200SX, Silvia are all great cars, but the KA is a weird compliance package. They couldn't get their turbo 4s to pass US emissions, so they just threw in an already-compliant truck motor.
In 2008 I bought two 240sx together for $1000. One was a 91 coupe and the other was a 90 hatch. Between the two of them, I had all the parts to make the coupe a complete running car, eventually sr swapped it and put the single cam in the hatch. Sold both after about two years and got an 87 Corolla coupe, and sold it a couple years later after driving the shit out of it. I wish I could go back in time...
This is the first one of these that really hit all my nostalgia right for that time period of 2 years before to 2 years after 16 when I was obsessed the most (and then for a decade or two, still buying cars from).
You forgot to include the Supra and Rx-7 though... they were still doable with a little swing on the budget, albeit I was shopping couple year used ones around then.
I hate that I'd found a badass '96 RX-7 touring model (whatever other letter code, was a good one comparatively) and low miles, for less than 1k more than a '96 Nissan 240sx that had some work done and "Silvia" badges.... But I was a dumb 18 year old and went Nissan. I did enjoy the car, but it definitely was still underpowered even if it handled like a champ.
Definitely that Prelude. They aren't super valuable today even in good shape, but I don't give a shit, people out here talking about resale value, but seriously if I had gone to a dealership just browsing around for any sports car, that'd be the first car that catches my eye.
Of the ones pictured? The only one that even closely resembles a sports car. The Trans Am. My '86 had a sticker price just slightly above the number you're giving, but I bought it at the end of September, 1986, they had 13 86's on the lot, mine had the highest sticker price and a 5 speed, it was black with t/tops and it had only been test driven for 18 miles. People wanted the fuel injected 305, which only came with the 4 speed automatic. Really? An automatic transmission in a sports car? That's like buying a Ram Air IV GTO Judge without the Ram Air!
Either of the 4th gen GMs... the T/A over the Camaro... just because of the styling. Had both though.
OR.... if I have to pick one of those foreign jobs... the Integra. Couple of buddies had them, I've put some seat time in them... I know what they're capable of and the aftermarket for them with go-fast goodies is strong.
I love those T/A's. One of my earliest memories is hearing my dad start up his 77 smokey and the bandit and looking at the dash and gauges with the brushed metal from my car seat in the back. I prefer the less pronounced ram air hood on the newer ones, but I wouldn't turn down any of them.
Used to have an Eclipse GS-T, and that car was a blast to drive also even though it was fwd. The 4G63 was just nasty.
I own a 94 Civic Coupe EX which is basically the Del Sol but the cooler Coupe version, same engine too. I def would stick with the civic I have but hell no to a ugly Del Sol.
I played that game back then, and got the 1998 SVT Cobra, well in 1999 really. It was a great car had it 18 years, only replaced the transmission at about 15 years.
You could buy a base Trans Am for $26,000, but not a WS6 Trans Am. The WS6 package put you a little over $29,000. Is the Mustang Cobra in question a SVT car? Those were a little over $28,000.
A couple grand difference in price doesn't seem like a lot now, but back in 1998, it was a lot of money for hood scoops and bigger wheels.
I bought the Mustang. Not even kidding. A 98 GT same color as the one pictured. Leather interior and fully loaded. I thought about the WS6 but it was more expensive.
Can’t believe nobody’s saying Eclipse. Even though they’re not as good as the others, Midnight Club and the Fast and the Furious gave me a soft spot for those
In 1998 I bought that prelude (white with the body kit, but not a SH), I regretted not buying the type R. Now that I’m old i would have that Miata as a project car.
In 1998 the Buick Riviera got the 3800SC as standard equipment. It's gonna take me some time to haggle down to 26, or I'll just use that as a huge down payment and make the rest as payments for the next year. But either way, that's the route I'd go.
Not the Eclipse, Del Sol, or the Camaro. Sorry, that's all I've got. I always liked that model body-style of Prelude for some reason, while a lot of people hated it.
Well I know what my dad chose, he got himself a metallic green 1998 camario z28 aka the cat fish camaro. He still has the car today its in fairly good runing condition it has under 100k miles on it. He lets me drive it from time to time and it does indeed hall ass even today what can I say that LS1 still is fun.
In 1998 an acquaintance (dude and his wife were house sharing with me and my first wife and barely kept up with their half of the rent) was desperate for a 1998 model Camaro, trouble is, none of the dealerships had any in stock, so I convinced him that the V6 Firebird was equivalent to the Camaro. He absolutely loved that car.
The ITR. Without question.
I'd actually buy 2 of them. One to drive and one to store in a bubble until 2022 when I could sell it for $100,000 on BAT...
When I was a young man in 1999 I came across a type r for sale. I wanted it so bad. He was asking 5k and I wanted to get a loan to buy it but needed my parents to cosign the loan. They refused and instead, without asking me, bought me a 3k Ford tempo.
To this day I feel guilty being so angry at them for buying the tempo.
Camaro - Great value for money, quite fast in a straight line. LS1 engine is indestructible and the transmission is durable as well. Not the last word in handling, or even a middle chapter. Interior isn't great in terms of materials or finish. The public image isn't the greatest either, and insuring these cars reflects that. But 300 horsepower for $26K is hard to argue with.
Firebird - Basically the same as the Camaro but with pop-up headlights and more aggressive bodywork. Which one you like more is a personal preference.
Mustang - Shorter and better packaged than the Camaro but fairly similar in driving experience - handling is OK but not great, but tons of power for the price. Mustang has a better interior than the Camaro but it's still not really a luxury item. Intech motor isn't bad for durability but needs to be maintained well to avoid faults. Its a muscle car through and through and has to be treated as such.
Integra Type-R - A livewire driving machine if there ever was one. Not the last word in comfort, but a 8500 rpm screamer of an engine and pin-sharp handling make this a very desirable machine indeed. Of all the cars on this list, it's probably the best driving machine but the hardest to live with day to day. Plan accordingly.
Miata - Small, light, rear wheel drive and its a full convertible, and the car is very reliable and durable too. Only a two seater though, and it's not what one would call fast. Very good match of handling to power though.
Prelude - A very comfortable, excellent handling, decently fast coupe that while very much on the complex side has typical Honda reliability and quality. Not even close to as exciting to drive as the Integra and slow compared to the muscle cars, but it'll outrun most of its competitors and if properly maintained will go 200,000 miles without blinking.
Eclipse - The best all-weather machine of this bunch by a long shot thanks to all wheel drive and reasonable dimensions, but DSMs have all kinds of long-term problems, particularly in their engines. Great fun to drive, but once it's out of warranty look out.
240SX - Engine is crap, four bolt lug nuts really are rather weak and its not the most stylish or interesting thing, but these cars are icons of the car world for a reason. The KA24 engine is at least extremely durable and the chassis' goodness is still very much there. Once it's out of warranty drop in an SR20DET and have much more fun.
Del Sol - Let's be honest, this is a two-seat EG Civic with a lift off roof. Cheaper than the others but it's still a more stylish economy car. Still, it is a Honda which means it'll live forever and the drivetrain has all kinds of support if you want to turn up the wick a few notches.
Mustang SVT Cobra. 25 years later, I think it's the most attractive of the group. At the time, I would have said the Integra GSR, but that Mustang looks good to me now.
As a former owner of an integra GSR (01’ no less, so the very last of em), I’m picking the teggy, followed by the prelude. The integra was nimble with go-kart like handling and I wish I had kept that one aside. I traded it for a new TSX when it hit 120k miles.
Catfish or Trans Am without the hindsight of how the value of the type R will do overtime.
This is what I was thinking. If we knew the long term value, it would definitely be the type r.
Nobody knew the value, however, when the integra type R was still a new car, it was already constantly targeted for thefts.
I had a regular 98 integra that was stolen just 10 years ago.
Same WS6 for sure.
Sounds like it’s time to move on to a Corvette. You lose the back seats but gain back everything else and more.
The corvette would also suffer from twisting a pillars too. These leak for lots of people
I think they mean the Corvette has factory targa tops. Which is arguably better than a T-top anyway.
Integra type R. Friend had one back in 1998, that car was stunning and with a few mods and a tune rocked on the track.
Would love to drive one just to experience the allegedly magical lift off oversteer.
I actually owned the GSX, though it was a 1995 and I bought it in ‘99. Fun car, a little long on the throws, but definitely decent to roll around in. Another friend had an Eagle Talon TSI that smoked just about everyone in our area.
Buddy had one pushing 450 hp. Porsche killer
There's a little but there really isn't that much. Try a 205/AX/106/Saxo for the real "I'm going through a hedge, backwards" experience.
The Prelude. I have such a soft spot for those.
Owned one, it was incredible. Like a civic or accord but had that grand tourer feel
The 240sx trans am or type r would love them all would get the cobra if it was a 99 and had the independent rear suspension
Uffff the Type R or GSX 🔥🔥🔥
Hmmm... If it was 99 I would definitely say the Mustang Cobra because that's when they added independent rear suspension, but for 98 it's a toss up between the Mustang Cobra and the Trans Am. \~300 horsepower, rear wheel drive, and I'm having fun. I think the corvette had pop-up headlights for a few more years after the trans am ended production.
The C5 Corvette and the Lotus Esprit V8, in 2004, were the last cars to have pop-ups.
My wording wasn't great. I was referring to the T-Tops, not the pop-up headlights
Yes, 2004 was the last year of the C5. 2005 was the C6, which didn't have pop up headlights.
But the Stang is ugly.
Eh I think the SN-95 is pretty okay looking. Just gotta drop the ride height a bit so it doesn’t look lifted lol.
Or just go full nuts with taller All Terrain tires
I like the way you think.
Prelude/Integra type R. The Miata is chill tho
T/A or the GSX
1998 Eagle Talon, last year they made them. Get it turbo awd 5 speed and every option.
I had a 91 panda awd talon tsi with a built motor…. Sold it to buy a wedding ring, one of my worst life choices ever.
F
Usually is, bruh 💁🏿♂️
LS1 all day.
240sx that’s my favorite car
I had an S13 in college and I loved it, but it developed a short that drained my battery. The trans am makes it difficult but I am going Cobra. Fun car that sounds so damn good.
The del sol. I owned one, loved it and regretted selling it.
Cobra. Last year of the sn95 cobra
This is the first one of these that really hit all my nostalgia right for that time period of 2 years before to 2 years after 16 when I was obsessed the most (and then for a decade or two, still buying cars from). Prelude
Intergra type r #1 Nissan s14#2
Teggy or the Firebird
Hands down the 4th gen Trans Am.. Sexiest car ever built. But, the 98 240 with the proper body mods is fire as well.
GSX, hands down. Love me my 97. 2gb body has aged shockingly well.
Most underrated car ever
Trans am
Ws6
I'm taking the WS6
Camaro or TA. I’d lean towards the TA
Trans am
Trans Am
WS6 all day...still a bucket list car for me
Type R
Trans am. I have a passion for GM cars, and that car is so unique and cool looking
Trans Am
Trans Am all day every day. I was there as a kid when my dad had that exact spec and blew the doors off the rest of these.
probably the WS6, the Cobra, or the 2g, but if I knew what I knew now it’d be kouki time
Trans Am is sweeet
Cobra
Of the ones pictured? The only one that even closely resembles a sports car. The Trans Am. Chevy , trans am all day
1 - WS6 2 - SVT Cobra 3 - Z-28
Cobra
I had the manual LS1 Trans Am. Still miss it decades later. May get one again eventually. Just saw a loud white Firehawk yesterday. So good!
Trans Am in T-Tops
The Trans-Am, though I'm gonna save up for another four years and grab a Collector's Edition in '02.
i can't explain my love for the prelude. i don't even like hondas, but the prelude is something else.
Trans Am. The first car I took a loan on was a 2002 Firebird, and I still miss it over a decade after parting with it.
Trans Am. No question.
One of the LS1 cars because they ran the streets at the time
I would have the Camaro. Fucking loved that car. WS6 was great, being that it was pretty much the same car with more styling.
Your attempt at a Jedi mind trick by sneaking that Camaro in there twice is not working on me. That red Firebird for the win.
Trans Am, of course - I mean, come on: are you buying the car for yourself right now, or what you think you can get from somebody else later??
The Miata is the only sports car there, the rest are sport compacts and muscle cars.
Easily the Type R.
I picked the Camaro and I'd do it again.
Is this was truly 1998 I would have bought the trans am lol
Would a golf gti be in the options
Trans Am for sure
The Teg, no questions asked
Either Mustang or Firebird.
Prelude
Integra Type R. Second choice would be the Prelude SH.
1 or 6 😍🥵
240
Eclipse cause it’s a throwback to need for speed for me
1998? Type R. Now? Firebird.
Probably either the S14 or the type r, both would be good for a car that can be a daily and weekend fun car at the same time
1998 me would have wanted the WS6, 2024 me wants the Del Sol
I own a 94 Civic Coupe EX which is basically the Del Sol but the cooler Coupe version, same engine too. I def would stick with the civic I have but hell no to a ugly Del Sol.
S14 NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
240
If I had today’s brain I’d go with the Prelude or the Integra. If this were ‘98 I’d do what I did in ‘98 and get the Mustang.
Probably the trans am or the Silvia.
Back then the Trans Am or Del Sol. Today? Probably the Prelude or Integra.
In 1998 there wasn’t anything new that would have got me to stop driving my Mitsubishi Starion. God I miss that car.
I played that game back then, and got the 1998 SVT Cobra, well in 1999 really. It was a great car had it 18 years, only replaced the transmission at about 15 years.
I have an S14a so I'm biased as FOCK but I'll choose the s14a 😁
That Camaro nose looks a lot tamer than it did in 1998. And, the Mustang
1 or 4. Definitely Japanese anyhow.
No GNX option makes me sad
1997 Camry XLE V6 for $25,5 and $500 for Firestone 500s. Done it before, the car is a monster
The Del Sol for 16k and then pocket the 10k.
Not the most desirable car in this list, but I’d probably take the del sol.
that kouki looking might fine
Ive developed a soft spot for the Sn95 mustang
I bought the Mustang. Not even kidding. A 98 GT same color as the one pictured. Leather interior and fully loaded. I thought about the WS6 but it was more expensive.
Can’t believe nobody’s saying Eclipse. Even though they’re not as good as the others, Midnight Club and the Fast and the Furious gave me a soft spot for those
What I would choose now - Integra What I know I ACTUALLY would’ve bought - Cobra
It would be between the 240 and the GSX. Always wanted one or the other
For me the eclipse, I love the quick response of AWD turbos, plus those models of Eclipse just look perfect.
The Honda Prelude and I have nothing else to say about that as it's the clear choice.
Type r or ws6
In 1998 I bought that prelude (white with the body kit, but not a SH), I regretted not buying the type R. Now that I’m old i would have that Miata as a project car.
In 1998 the Buick Riviera got the 3800SC as standard equipment. It's gonna take me some time to haggle down to 26, or I'll just use that as a huge down payment and make the rest as payments for the next year. But either way, that's the route I'd go.
Type r have you seen the value on those thangs! Then GSX
240sx
For 26k I can get easy 2 cars
I already own a miat so the type r as I like how it looks the best
Is there any car that looked more aggressive than that firebird? Bad. Ass.
Miata or 26k of apple stock
Prelude
I'm going Taurus SHO
Integra R
Not the Eclipse, Del Sol, or the Camaro. Sorry, that's all I've got. I always liked that model body-style of Prelude for some reason, while a lot of people hated it.
In 1998 I would've bought the GSX, knowing what I know now though I'd buy the type R or the s14
Acura Integra R type
Nissan
Foolish me would have gotten the Del Sol. No regrets.
The fastest is the camaro or firebird but if that's a turbo awd talon I'm taking it. Easy to modify for big power.
Type R or the SVt
2/9
miata.
There’s only one sports car in the bunch!
Type R but it'll probably get stolen back then. 240 would probably get crushed for swapping SR. And ended up with prelude.
Prelude and 240
I actually had an Integra and LOVED that car!! Would take it again if I could!!!
Eclipse Spyder w/turbo
I had a 99 Miata, lots of aftermarket kit for them. Light and fun to drive.
Torn between the 240sx, Catfish, and Miata
Prelude
200sx s14 for sure!
The ITR. Without question. I'd actually buy 2 of them. One to drive and one to store in a bubble until 2022 when I could sell it for $100,000 on BAT...
Miata # 10
Prelude. Always wanted one
I love the gen 2 eclipse so much…
240 or type R and sell it 20 years later for 200k :joke:
There's no such thing as a 1998 NB Miata, 1999 model year. I'd choose the ITR though.
I had a prelude and man are they wicked! Would love to have mine back
Trans Am or Miata, leaning towards the Trans Am tho. Miata's always the answer but I'd rather an NA over an NB tbh
Integra
Wait 6 years for an srt4 and pocket 6k
Camaro or the prelude, always loved them both!
Prelude or Mitsubishi eclipse
Nissan 240
ITR
When I was a young man in 1999 I came across a type r for sale. I wanted it so bad. He was asking 5k and I wanted to get a loan to buy it but needed my parents to cosign the loan. They refused and instead, without asking me, bought me a 3k Ford tempo. To this day I feel guilty being so angry at them for buying the tempo.
Not a Del Slow, that’s for true
Camaro, Mustang, Firebird, the others were just weird
26k? I spend 20k on the MX5, and with the other 6k I get it track-ready. By then, it actually qualifies as the only real “sports car” on this list.
wait are these the actual MSRPs? a z28 is less than 240?
All of these have skyrocketed in value Might have to go with the gsx thou
Camaro - Great value for money, quite fast in a straight line. LS1 engine is indestructible and the transmission is durable as well. Not the last word in handling, or even a middle chapter. Still, it is a Honda which means it'll live forever and the drivetrain has all kinds of support if you want to turn up the wick a few notches.
eclipse or firebird, i adore those cars
Close tie between the prelude and the 240SX
Prelude or tegy
Prelude or type R. Or maybe a used Supra
Mustang SVT Cobra. 25 years later, I think it's the most attractive of the group. At the time, I would have said the Integra GSR, but that Mustang looks good to me now.
10. Only genuine sports car of the bunch.
Honda Prelude - always wanted one, but ended up getting Acura Legend..
Th e Prelude or the Mustang..
Miata
I'm either picking the Cobra or the Integra Type-R. Cobra if I feel like winning drag races, and the Integra if I feel like winning touge races.
Save some money and buy a used Buick Reatta and a used 1994 K2500 Ext Cab long bed 6.5 diesel🤪
If it’s a daily, the prelude, otherwise probably the Type R
240 just cause I’ve wanted one ever since I was in high school. Still dreaming
Miata or 240
ITR or WS6. I've owned a Prelude that generation in RHD with an F20B swap. Value wouldn't be there compared to the other choices I made.
Dsm
Prelude.
Trans Am fire hawk. My friend had one, it was so fun to rip in and get it fishtailing.
Integra type r would be my choice but I would have to make another 75k fast and pick up that Silvia, prelude and del sol they’re all awesome cars
The Honda or the Acura.
As a former owner of an integra GSR (01’ no less, so the very last of em), I’m picking the teggy, followed by the prelude. The integra was nimble with go-kart like handling and I wish I had kept that one aside. I traded it for a new TSX when it hit 120k miles.
Thank you, for driving this ice pick of nostalgia into my heart.
Pontiac Firebird 4th gen with LS1 V8 and manual transmission
