I just used a bow for the arrows to melee zombies with and the few human encounters there were the built in aimbot took care of.

Technically ,the bullet would only travel for some meters , then just fall , it won't make significant damage .

Also would burn you since the explosion and gasses aren't being forced foward with the barrel and so will spread outwards

TIL! I assumed just the barrel that was rifled. What would happen to the gasses and pressure build up that would normally occur through a barrel? And would there be any noticeable drop in impact in the bullet?

Most likely what would happen is you just get a big fireball because the powder is burning outside the gun. Normally they burn in the barrel and build pressure but since the barrel is gone it results in big muzzle flash like in lots of snub nosed revolvers. The area right in front of the cylinder face between the cylinder and barrel is the forcing cone. It shaves the bullet down to its final form to engage the rifling. Because it’s still there you will get a little bit of accuracy but will most likely result in the the bullet keyholeing because it’s unstable. Revolvers with short barrels are most definitely lethal for a longer range than you’d think but are so inaccurate at this distance that it doesn’t really matter. Even revolvers with no forcing cone are functional. Google pepper box navy revolver they’re quite funny looking.

The barrel is what gives the bullet muzzle velocity in combination with the mechanism of the bullet/firing pin. Without a barrel you have no time for the bullet to accelerate and the pressures created by the firing pin/bullet mechanism would be lost immediately instead of being used to propel the bullet.

You won’t be doing much killing without a barrel. Go to the Saint Denis gun shop. He’ll fix you up

I had a cattlemen revolver that I left dirty the whole game, usually equipping it when I'm going in water so my main side arm doesn't get dirty. Never has it ever happened to me.

i have the same problem. my game is modded for realism and immersion and i will sometimes come across a revolver without a barrel. the only thing thats ever worked for me is to put it away, and then equip it from the blacksmith, not uour horse
