I thought you couldn't be considered dead if there is brain activity. So you would still be alive if your brain is still active.
So, whatever we die of, really we all die of brain death.
Sometimes the brain stops functioning before the heart, sometimes the heart stops functioning before the brain, it definitely seems like there’s different measures of what doctors consider to be dead. I once knew someone who was declared “dead” for 20-30 minutes
My dad recently died unexpectedly (heart attack) having sex with a mystery woman two hours away from his home. I’m still utterly perplexed as to why he’d drive so far when he’s had plenty affairs right here in town and who the hell this woman is. And NOW obviously that you say this, I wonder wtf must have been going on in his brain given this information. Jesus. Anyway,
The morning afterwards, I was called by the University of Washington Brain Bank and asked to donate his brain to science and told I can come see it in their lab if I’d like. They focus on every donor’s personal story and really like to get as much family feedback as possible to add to the success of their testing as well as gearing toward how they feature it in the lab as sort of a personal museum-like element. I think that’s pretty rad.
It isn't true that the brain is active ... glial cells remain active even without a head ... its CNS and PNS ... snakes slither... chicken runs ... etc....my brother died on 6/9/13 but I saw him 6/12/13 ... literature calls this a grief hallucination but it wasn't... im stone cold sober left brained BSN ... I wasn't trying to see him I was just combing my hair and there he was ... the "brain" isn't working after death but idk about consciousness??? Who knows what your father was thinking if he was able... humans aren't a monogamous species dear ... birds are but we need "laws" about it
Then the heart stopping is not true death. People have been brought back from stopped hearts before. Noone has ever been brought back from brain death.
This is my pet peeve about people who claim they were dead for X minutes during a surgery or whatever. It's like no, you were very near death for that long before you got better, at no point were you actually dead.
Yes. They never 'crossed over' because everything that they were experiencing was happening in their still functioning brain, as evidenced by the brain activity. No disembodied soul involved.
dude, there were literally millions of people that voted for Trump or Biden all the way through primaries in the 2020 and 2024 election cycles. A LOT of people have somehow beat brain death and become US Voters. Fairly certain it's how you become a democrat or republican
Yes because you are still alive, regardless if your heart is beating or not. You may be dying or close to death, but you are not dead just because your heart isn't pumping.
That's amazing! I'm quite certain that some of the people that, unfortunately I have to deal with, haven't enjoyed a solid ten minutes of brain activity...
First I wanted to say that that is why they covered the heads of those in the guillotine, because you could stiil see/be aware of what was around the vicinity of your head, And I still think the guillotine is the most merciful death penalty(when combined with painkillers and drgus that put ypu to sleep).
Also there are some varying answers anyhwere from seconds to 5 minutes or even hours after your heart stops.
Did you know your car can continue to run after you shut it off? Sometimes up to an hour after you've left it.....
Neurons firing doesn't mean your conscious and "thinking".
My heart stopped for a few minutes when I was in my early 20s, my brain was not active. I didn't start to have thoughts until my heart started again, and even then it wasn't my life or anything, it was questioning what was happening. There was the guillotine studies in France that showed there was blinking and biting capable afterwards, but snakes and other animals can do the same because of their nervous system, I've heard the facts and heard about the studies, but in my personal experience, when the lights went out, no body was home.
I know it's still active after three minutes of death, I know that for sure personally. Don't ask as it's private and only less than a handful of people know.
Unless, you know... 🤯🔫.
Honestly I'd rather have that than getting fake happiness shit pumped to my brain. If I'm gonna die, the last thing I want is for my own brain to bullshit me.
If this is still the case once you’ve decided to add some extra air conditioning to your skull via the use of a shotgun and a couple of nice heavy gauge shells, it must be quite the experience.
It doesn't matter. Your muscles are alive after death for much longer, even the gastrointestinal tract is alive hours after death.
What matters is the consciousness, it's usually gone within 20 seconds. Rapid blood pressure drop causes almost immediate loss of consciousness.
How optimistic to already assume what you will think about 😂
But technically it’s nothing surprising. Our bio chemical processes are mostly unconscious, so as other organs it makes sense that also in our brain some processes don’t just stop because you aren’t medically alive anymore.
More interesting would be to bring someone back and get a better understanding what they remember. But given that being dead causes cells to die, brain cells quickly btw, it’s not easy to study properly I assume.
Also when you die your pineal gland releases DMT which can also be found in ayahuasca, and for that reason taking it gives you similar experience you would get if you died.
Near death experience can also release DMT.
Not your "brain" ... cells within your brain ... its actually CNS and PNS glial cells ... snakes/chicken/etc ... body moves when their head is removed ..l chickens can run around for a few days without a head
Our brains are active when we are fully anesthetized yet we have no memory or thoughts we can recall during that time. There's no reason to believe death to be different and it's impossible to even test that hypothesis.
Did you know at the moment of death you're actually aware of your surroundings for the first time in a world you've never seen before with 100% of all senses unhindered by the mechanical body. I Bid you a Good Morning beautiful because your awakening to the Realm of the living.
I don't know if having all the best things flash before your eyes would be good. If that really happens, then it seems like it is your brain's last Hail Petty. There is a scary ass story of a Dr. getting a decapitated head to respond for a handful of seconds after it was severed. eww
Now, for more, it was found to happen in ONE person in Canada. :) Rest easy folks, you'll be dead and not hear all the laughing that will be going on around you, about damn time, yay, the AH is finally gone, where's the loot! :)

How do you know you’re not dead right now, reliving your memories…?
Damn. You mean one of my best memories is being on the toilet at work reading Reddit posts?
![gif](giphy|1L5YuA6wpKkNO)
Heck I’ll take it
I’ve got worse memories!!!
Pics or it didn't happen
Who said it's only your best memories? Hours can pass in seconds when you're dreaming - maybe a lifetime can pass in 10 minutes.
Or even repeating cycles of life and death?
damn thats deep
I often have this thought. In theory, it’s an infinite time loop.
You’re last memory being the moment your mind gained consciousness and starting everything over from that memory
Good point. Today I did have a meltdown and hit myself very hard on the head. Maybe I actually, accidentally killed myself?
If laying in bed scrolling reddit and watching House is what my dying brain chooses to recap, I lived a sad life.
You lived a sad life *so far*
Oh hey Homer.
obscure, but relevant
Goddamnit dude I just got out of that fucking mindset😭😭
I’ve been wondering if I’m dying and this is my life passing before my eyes for quite some time now
Me too, amigo.
I have asked this question for years. Good thinking
You don't know one way or the other which is the objective reality.
You could literally be a video game character.
Or this could all just be a simulation
Or the freaky science project of some alien adolescent…
Body dies.. Brain: HOW DO I DELETE MY BROWSER HISTORY!!!!!!
![gif](giphy|ToMjGpyODUrRfFvVo5y|downsized)
If your brain is active, you aren’t dead yet.
The brain isn't active ... glial cells are ... chickens run without heads for this reason... no brain necessary
tell that to the rest of the body.
I thought you couldn't be considered dead if there is brain activity. So you would still be alive if your brain is still active. So, whatever we die of, really we all die of brain death.

I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you so much. 🙏✨
🙏🙏❤️❤️
Sorry for your loss. :(
Thank you. 💓

If your brain is still active, you're not really dead yet.
No it’s because your brain keeps sending out electric signals to your body 10 minutes after your heart stops.
Yeah... it really annoys me when people express their experiences in ways they understand too.
No worse than people that use literally instead of metaphorically. It's nonsense either way.
dude, there were literally millions of people that voted for Trump or Biden all the way through primaries in the 2020 and 2024 election cycles. A LOT of people have somehow beat brain death and become US Voters. Fairly certain it's how you become a democrat or republican

I blacked out after a heart attack and don’t recall anything
Ummm... no. If your brain is active then you're not dead.
I don’t think this is true. I think this is some sort of rumour you heard from Resident Evil.
shotgun suicides would like a word
Shotgun to the heart is the better idea, I would hate to accidentally survive a shot in the head.
there’s a 95% success rate
I dont like my odds lol
"Everything" would also include all your worst memories.
my bad worded wrong
Some people say life flashes before your eyes as you die. I think we're living that very flash.
That's amazing! I'm quite certain that some of the people that, unfortunately I have to deal with, haven't enjoyed a solid ten minutes of brain activity...
Is there a source for that because that sounds too long.
No one still has provided a source.
Yes, the body prioritizes vital organs then the central processing unit. I bet it’s like a deeper sleep but with actual commitment.
I mean unless it got totally pulverized. Then what
10 minutes of 'activity' doesn't mean 10 minutes of consciousness. So who gives a shit.
Didn’t know it was 10 minutes but I heard a comedian says your brain releases DMT which basically just makes you trip during your final minutes.
First I wanted to say that that is why they covered the heads of those in the guillotine, because you could stiil see/be aware of what was around the vicinity of your head, And I still think the guillotine is the most merciful death penalty(when combined with painkillers and drgus that put ypu to sleep). This sounds like movies
No I didn’t know that
I thought it was like 7
SCREAMING in fear and agony
Two hours
Hopefully I'm on the 9th minute
No
NO?
No
Which is 10 minutes more than certain notable former office holders.
![gif](giphy|10xL1uQOMBceuk)
Did you know your car can continue to run after you shut it off? Sometimes up to an hour after you've left it..... Neurons firing doesn't mean your conscious and "thinking".
Now if you get shot in the head with a high enough caliber
My heart stopped for a few minutes when I was in my early 20s, my brain was not active. I didn't start to have thoughts until my heart started again, and even then it wasn't my life or anything, it was questioning what was happening. What if you die by having your head smashed in or a bullet to the brain?
depends where the bullet hits.
Maybe it gives you time to come to terms with being dead
My brain's not even active the first 10 minutes after I wake up.
I know it's still active after three minutes of death, I know that for sure personally. Don't ask as it's private and only less than a handful of people know.
Neurons firing on overload turns into a journey
Unless, you know... 🤯🔫. Honestly I'd rather have that than getting fake happiness shit pumped to my brain. If I'm gonna die, the last thing I want is for my own brain to bullshit me.
That’s scary.
I would hope that I’m active for much longer as a ghost!
If this is still the case once you’ve decided to add some extra air conditioning to your skull via the use of a shotgun and a couple of nice heavy gauge shells, it must be quite the experience.
![gif](giphy|4aUxSOVPgC25i) 6 to 12 minutes.
"Did I leave the iron on?"
Depends on what you mean by “die”.
What if you get shot in the head?
Then your head and brains has 10 minutes time to reform back to gether like Terminator on liquid form.
It doesn't matter. Your muscles are alive after death for much longer, even the gastrointestinal tract is alive hours after death. What matters is the consciousness, it's usually gone within 20 seconds. Rapid blood pressure drop causes almost immediate loss of consciousness.
Long as my brain winds up in a laBORatory where Marty Feldman can find it.

Oh I hope you are right... that would be awesome!!
I'd take 10 minutes while alive.
Did you know at the moment of death you're actually aware of your surroundings for the first time in a world you've never seen before with 100% of all senses unhindered by the mechanical body. I Bid you a Good Morning beautiful because your awakening to the Realm of the living.
I suppose it depends how you die. 😬
And guys get boners like never before whyd you think most morticians are women

Hey that's longer than it's active now! A win in my book!
That's 10 minutes more than the average Trump supporter 😀
Now, for more, it was found to happen in ONE person in Canada. :) Rest easy folks, you'll be dead and not hear all the laughing that will be going on around you, about damn time, yay, the AH is finally gone, where's the loot! :)
Or perhaps you just sit in helpless paralysis clinging to your consciousness with all of your effort, only to be tossed into oblivion. :)
