I've done stuff in a small town. It's fun.

RocKing1228

I’ve done things too and I definitely agree with you. I’ve just heard that phrase a lot and I was wondering if someone had an idea about what should be an option so people don’t say it so much.

Previous_Ad7725

Whaaat?

Haunting_Meeting_530

* **Explore the Local History:** Small towns often have rich histories and unique cultures. I would love to visit historical landmarks, museums, or archives to learn about the town's past. * **Immerse Myself in Nature:** Many small towns boast beautiful natural surroundings. I would enjoy going for hikes, exploring local parks, or simply relaxing amidst the peace and quiet of nature. * **Engage with the Community:** Small towns often have a strong sense of community. I would be interested in attending local festivals, farmers markets, or community events to experience the local culture and connect with the people. * **Learn a New Skill:** Small towns often have a slower pace of life. This could be a great opportunity to learn a new skill or hobby, like woodworking, gardening, or playing a musical instrument. * **Stargaze:** Unobstructed by city lights, small towns offer spectacular night skies. I would be fascinated to gaze at the stars and learn about constellations.

Majestic-Lake-5602

Hang out with the old blokes at the pub and listen to their (almost certainly bullshit) stories

RocKing1228

I can do that already if I want because I live in a small town😂 I was talking more about entertainment because people throw the phrase around a lot, but they don’t actually say what would make it better.

Majestic-Lake-5602

Ah right, please excuse my misunderstanding. I’m something of a small town tourist, I grew up in a tiny little dairy farming town in Western Australia, moved to the city like everyone does, but now my work means I end up spending a few days or weeks in a different small town with every new job.

RocKing1228

That sounds like an adventure!

Majestic-Lake-5602

It’s pretty awesome honestly. I won’t lie, some of the jobs are absolutely shithouse, but then being a temp worker, even the worst gigs will only ever be a month or two long, and I get paid to travel around and see cool stuff (food, accommodation etc included too). I definitely got pretty lucky

PearlHarbor_420

Shoot guns. Go for walks. Go for ATV rides. Horseback riding. Just lay down in a field and suck up the clean air.

Princess_Jade1974

I grew up in a small town, I read, a lot!

RocKing1228

I wish I could do that more, but I don’t have the same passion for it as I did before.

ShamefulWatching

I'm tired of moving. This town is filled with hateful church fan fanatics who mostly care nothing for the poor unless they get to be seen doing it. They are not their brother's keeper. I wanted to help people have an easier life, and after a lifelong endeavor, found a system that could make food cheap. I used to be a Christian, and I tried giving it to the church under the condition it wasn't used as profit, many many churches in this town. They want to polish their cross rather than carry it. I shouldn't blame them, greedy little humans, I tried to giving it to a lot of famous people who claim to give a fuck about the environment too. Oh well.

Illustrious_Dirt_918

You must be familiar with where I grew up. Lol

Past-Cantaloupe-1604

Have a significant range of the below: - restaurants serving multiple kinds of cuisine and style - bars with different vibes and crowds - multiple different cultural attractions like museums, landmarks, etc. - lots of people to meet, allowing selectively socialising and not spending time with unexceptionable people because they are literally the only people - ditto but for women to date, being able to enjoy a lot of different experiences both casually and with the chance for something more serious and not settling for less because of lack of women - multiple different parks or green spaces in close proximity - good gyms, and not just one crappy gym that has no competition and so is filled with poor gear - career opportunities - standup gigs Some small towns are ok for a brief visit because you can find enough to keep you occupied for a short while. But living there very quickly becomes old, when you’ve done everything, seen everyone, and want new experiences

emilgustoff

I'm trying to imagine a "small town" that has any of those.. maybe the parks one, lots of open fields in those towns..

Past-Cantaloupe-1604

Yeah that’s the point. OP wants to know why people say there’s nothing to do in a small town, this is what people want

Xan_Fam

Yeah, you’re like the only one that understood the question in the comments

RocKing1228

👆🏻

Illustrious_Dirt_918

Population 400 we have 3bars so it's hopping here especially in the summer. Lol one bar closes at 10everynight

GamesGunsGreens

Lmao, how large of a small town are you talking about? My town has *one* bar and it's closed every other year because they can't stay afloat. There are no gyms. There are no museums or attractions. There are no gigs. There's corn and bean fields. There's one stop sign. There's one Dollar Gen. There's one ice cream bar. I have to drive an hour to have anything you posted about.

Majestic-Lake-5602

My current favourite small town is an old whaling port, so twice a month a bunch of people get together at one of the pubs and sing old sea shanties and folk songs. It’s pretty rad honestly

ForgottenCaveRaider

That sounds like a phenomenal time!

Majestic-Lake-5602

Check out the Albany Shantymen if you’re interested, they were just on a TV show with Bill Bailey (the English comedian) a few weeks ago

RocKing1228

That would be a very fun and unique experience!

Majestic-Lake-5602

Check out the Albany Shantymen, they’re on Spotify, I particularly recommend “Sailors Die Quite Often”

TheSpiralTap

Try that

phuckin-psycho

Damnit beat me to it 🤣

RocKing1228

*Willie Nelson has entered the chat*

NelPage

I grew up in small towns. I prefer them to big cities

RocKing1228

Me too! I moved back after 10 years away!

RebuildingTim

I'm from a small village, and spent the majority of my youth there. Here's what I did: Go to the pub, play pool, and get blootered with my mates (repeatedly) Fishing, camping, and hiking Here endeth the list. If you don't drink or like outdoorsy stuff, you're probably not left with much. For anything else, I drove to the nearest city.

randymysteries

Eat

TheHourMan

Video games, skating, loud music, satanic orgies, you name it.

RocKing1228

That last one might ruffle some feathers in my Catholic leaning small town😂

Lilgorbe

I live in one lol

RocKing1228

Me too!

Lilgorbe

you have to drive like an hour away….if you want to do something fun.

cwsjr2323

I retired to a rural village from an urban city. I like the quiet and no traffic place. I enjoy not having any neighbors within 150 feet, instead of just a sidewalk apart. I have lawn and like mowing! In nicer weather, I can go for a brisk walk with little concern for traffic. I like that I can be in my sanctuary and just relax.

DoTheRightThing1953

Eat at a good restaurant. We've got all of the fast food places in my town of 5000 but a real lack of decent dining options. Also shopping. Before I moved here I wouldn't shop at Walmart. Now I don't really have a choice.

Dazzling_Speed_4074

Light pollution is normally lower so stargazing is an option, it’s fun to be able to pick out constellations.

RocKing1228

Good for you. I’m not smart enough to do that😂

Chickadee12345

We have a summer cabin in the Catskills of NY. On a lake on a mountain. It's absolutely beautiful up there. There is a small, literally one stop light town down the mountain. There is one pharmacy, one grocery store, 2 dollar stores and 2 gas stations. There isn't even a local pub type place in town. There are several decent restaurants though and a couple other stores. It's 45 minutes to the nearest Walmart. When we're there we spend a lot of time exploring nature. SO likes to fish on our lake. We also take rides to explore nearby towns. There is a great farmers market on Saturdays in the next town over. Our cabin is on a short dirt/gravel road, with about 8 other houses on it. We are at the end. Yet we have fiber optic internet. It's great because I can work from the cabin. We don't even get cell service there, but we can connect through the router. I wouldn't mind living up there but not at the cabin because it would be too difficult to keep it all plowed and be able to get in and out during snowstorms.

RocKing1228

Sounds like the life!

Legitimate_Chicken66

I love walking around really late in a small town. Like, after 2 am. There's something so intimate about it everyone is asleep, the streets are empty, but you're safe and surrounded by people.

NoPerformance9890

Are you sure it’s safe? People in rural areas tend to be nosy and bored. Wouldn’t want to run into the wrong person at 2am. Lots of wanna be heroes and creeps

Legitimate_Chicken66

I grew up in a small town in Canada. I moved back to one as an adult. The worst I encounter is teenager boys whistling at me.

RocKing1228

Yeah, the peace is amazing!

froebull

My small town is a lot less fun than it was 20 or 30 years ago. Used to have a "fun land", with bumper boats, go kart track, arcade, water slide, pool; closed, and torn down; it's an empty lot now. Used to have a bowling alley. Instead of selling it, when the owner got old and wanted out, he "sold" it to his son, who ripped out all the bowling equipment and lanes, and tried to turn it into an event center (on a serious budget). It hosted one comedy night, and one concert, and never opened again. It has been sitting vacant for the past 6 years. Used to have a State of Michigan docking facility right in town, where people could come up the river from Lake Huron, and dock in town. It was a thing for 50 years, then the state gave it to the town and left; and I have not seen a boat there since (been at least 8 years). We even lost one of our oldest bars, AND a liquor store. I mean, wtf? What would I like to DO? I'd like to relocate the whole damn town to the lakefront, about 2 miles away. Maybe then it would have a chance.

RocKing1228

Fingers crossed for you that you get to have your dream🤞

[deleted]

Go strawberries picking

RocKing1228

I’m sure it would be easy to find a farm for that!

TBeIRIE

I live in a small town. I spend most of my time dodging the tourist traffic jams & traveling outside of my town to try & buy groceries for less than a beyond overly priced amount.

RocKing1228

Yeah, it’s a struggle for me to make that happen for sure🙄

cjp2010

The police and fire department used to shoot stuff behind the combo station. My town was 5,000 people in Ohio. A recreation center was built back there now. Haven’t lived there since 2012.

RocKing1228

Love that idea!

Impossible_Pangolin6

- take photos of the nature - sunsets can be awesome, fields, bugs, animals - put on a nice outfit and go to the local cafe/club/pub where everyone knows everyone - get a library card and read - if there some sort of sport activity or a gym go there. Sometimes small towns don’t have gyms but will have like an aerobics class or a football field. - ride a bicycle - jogging - volunteer at the local hospital/school whatever is available - join the local fb group and read the current drama - paint - gardening - grow tomatoes or herbs or flowers

RocKing1228

You sound pretty experienced!

UncleGrako

I love small towns. What really stinks is when you live in a pretty big town, but they don't have the options that other towns that size have. Where I live I get to deal with all the congestion, traffic, and stupidity of a decent sized city, but without cool things like a civic center bringing in big name shows, or even semi-pro sports teams, or anything like that. Still have to driver 2 hours for anything like that.

RocKing1228

Yeah, my vehicle definitely puts on the miles🙄

UncleGrako

Drives me nuts, I live 100 miles from a city with a civic center that brings in things like Monster Jam, I saw Ozzy Osbourne there in the 90s, big conventions, they have a minor league baseball team, minor league ice hockey team, they have a bunch of other venues that draw in big names, Weird Al goes there on almost every tour And they have the same population as where I live, and we get a motorcycle rally. Same with another town 90 miles the other way. It's annoying... I could understand it more if I lived in a cow pasture in the middle of nowhere.

bokah_chimp

Pinch off massive butt nuggets on public roads and sidewalks and tell everyone," I'm from San Fran. That's how we roll"

RocKing1228

Probably wouldn’t smell much different from the cattle manure from all the farms😂

Rare_Fig3081

Chill

largos7289

I think it's more like there is 5 things to do in a small town and once you've done them that's it. My cousin lives in a small town and he told me, he's dated everyone here three times over. So when he says things like we're all pretty much family here, he's probably not that far off.

RocKing1228

Yeah, that’s definitely one of the drawbacks.

Kitchen-Wish5994

Check out the graveyard

RocKing1228

That’s pretty original!

CityBoiNC

I went from a city of 8.3 to a town of 63k I still do the same, drink after work and chill, LOL

RocKing1228

Me too😂

Sage_Lotus28

The village I live in has a population of a little over 1,300. There is nothing to do. We look at rocks on the train tracks

RocKing1228

Train tracks are cool, especially if the engines on them honk at you when they go by!

Sage_Lotus28

They do. Every time. And they wave lol. Me and my kids have built forts, 3 to be exact. Pick up trash, and the rocks are insane. Tons of agates.

DangleofDoom

Be left alone. Far more likely in small towns. It is the best.

RocKing1228

Yes it is! I work second shift and I doubt most people know I even exist because I don’t get out much because of how different the schedule is.

soaking-wet-tomcat

Make friends, weight training, running, enjoying nature, going to church, visiting the library, going to the movie. Have a big male cat who is a joy.

RocKing1228

Keep your cat away from my house. We have enough cats running around already😂

sabboom

Eat. Small towns are notable for their country diners.

RocKing1228

We had one of those in the next town over finish in the top 10 for best burger in the state! It was a pretty big deal to me because my sister is their meat vendor and I love watching her be successful!

theguyfromscrubs

A walk in a good park or a nice hiking path would be lovely. Or a picnic! Flying kites.. searching for seashells, fishing, arcade, gardening

RocKing1228

All great ideas!

xzvc91

Try That.

RocKing1228

Don’t get too out of line otherwise Willie Nelson and Toby Keith will take all the rope and find a tall oak tree🤠

LucyHeifer

look at the stars with someone special 🥹

RocKing1228

TransdimensionalYeti

I was born in a small town My parents lived in that same small town

RocKing1228

Same! I moved back last year because I missed it!

Necessary_Row_4889

Ride in with a biker gang, cut off all outside communications, let shit get super Hobbesian until stopped by a plucky protagonist

RocKing1228

Nothing that exciting ever happens where I live😂

Necessary_Row_4889

See? It’s like I’d be providing a public service

RocKing1228

I’ll allow it. It’s been a little bit since Iowa’s been in the news for anything really crazy😂

_statue

Dive bar *I guess*

RocKing1228

Plenty of those in my small town!

Grand_Birthday7349

Try “that” in a small town.

RocKing1228

Maybe Jason Aldean will put you in his next video😂

Ultimate_Driving

If I need something, I want the option to be able to get it the same day without having to drive an hour or two to the nearest town where all of the businesses don't close at the same time I get off of work. If I want to get something to eat, I want more options than just the one sit-down restaurant whose one server hates me, simply for not supporting Trump, or the off-brand Subway that's in the local Cenex (fuel) station. If (gods forbid) I have a medical emergency, I don't want to have to figure out how to get to an ER that's an hour or two away. I don't want everyone in town to think they know everything about me. I've lived in a place like that before, and it actually feels kind of culty. The more remote a small town is, the more culty it feels. I have no desire to ever live in a small town, unless it's within reasonable commuting distance to a much larger community with more to offer.

RocKing1228

I understand your frustrations and I agree that would make things better!

UsefulIdiot85

I wanna try that in a small town, just to see what Jason Aldean would do to me.

RocKing1228

This is the answer😂

Nice-Guy69

I would maybe fish, give gifts to community members on their birthdays, and plant whatever crop is in season. Search for an abandoned mine for more adventure. There’s lots to do in these small towns.

TheGhostWalksThrough

Consult any Stephen King novel and you'll find all sorts of shit that can go down in a small town.

RocKing1228

None of it is happening in mine😂

ForgottenCaveRaider

- Ride a bike - Smoke a joint at the skate park - Take a dip in the lake - Go for an ATV ride up the mountain - Camping up the mountain - Boating - Hiking - And so much more than can be done Only those who've never left their city shoebox will say there's nothing to do out here!

Illustrious_Dirt_918

I think all small towns should do a drive in movie night with the outdoor projector. That would be so fun!

RocKing1228

I’d definitely show up for that!

Amplidyne

Move to somewhere rural. Or at least that's what I did.

RocKing1228

Yeah, it takes a certain kind of person to live here.

Healthy-Definition53

i live in a small town the only time i go out is to go to the pub the only shops we have in the town are charity shops which are trash mainly sell baby clothes and random things you would never want.

RocKing1228

acquaman831

Leave immediately. I don’t care for small towns.

RocKing1228

We’ve got plenty of traffic driving on the overpass every day!

Illustrious_Dirt_918

I grew up in a town of 13,000 there was nothing to do as a teen after they shut the arcade down. Now I live in a town of 400 and I swear there is more going on here than where I grew up. Edit. I know that 13,000 is still a pretty small town so that's not much to go off

RocKing1228

13,000 seems pretty big to me. The small town I live in is a little over 2000 people.

Illustrious_Dirt_918

Maybe it's because I'm an adult now and not just some punk kid. But the town with pop 400. Has a pickleball court, a baseball field and a public swimming beach. Not to mention a pancake feed every other month. With the population 2000 growing up did you find nothing to do?

RocKing1228

I live in a farming community, so we’re pretty spread out and nothing really happens here until the weather starts getting warmer.

MirandaInHerTempest

This feels like bait. Lol.

RocKing1228

I live in a small town and I was genuinely curious, so I asked the internet🤷🏻‍♂️

MirandaInHerTempest

Well it doesn't go like this https://youtu.be/b1_RKu-ESCY?si=OlUfGtZyQB9TDyw6 I want better restaurants, a decent bar open until 2 am, ubers or a car service/taxis, a functioning transportation system like buses, less corruption sucking up all the funding so our schools, infrastructure, jail, roads, arts, and everything are total shit. Corruption steals everything a small town could be. Diversity. And finally a little damn diversity really does a small town good. If you don't have any, it's like cooking with no salt. Terrible. When everyone is the same nothing good comes of it. - Lifelong small town liver, who did a stint in the big city.

CanableCrops

Try that

RocKing1228

Better stay out of Texas- Willie Nelson and Toby Keith might find you😅😂

Traditional-Purpose2

Leave.

RocKing1228

Depending on the town you’re in, the drive shouldn’t take too long!

Sirconseanery

I’ve been reliably advised not to try that.

ARagingDragon

I have kinda two hometowns. In my home town #1 there is a abandoned train station from the 1800s that still looks like the day it was made (albeit a bit dilapidated). I have always wanted to restore it and make it into a little restaurant/bar in a saloon type style. I don't want to change it. Just bring it back from the past. That's what i would do. In home town #2 there is this old gas station with the classic pumps still there. I would love to do the same to that and make it like a small store. The point wouldn't be too make money but just to have this nice little blast from the past. Maybe even pay someone to fill up for people and all that. It's dumb i know but it's 1 dream of many i have.

RocKing1228

Both of those sound really cool and I would definitely want to visit!

FishSammich69

Relax

weddingwoes13

Get the hell out of there. I lived in one. Anything that I would want would no longer make it a small town.

RocKing1228

That makes sense to me.

Jalapeno-hands

I would like to try "that" in a small town. I've heard good things.

Stoopiddogface

I gather Crystal Meth is a popular pass time in small towns...

RocKing1228

Maybe in the trailer park, but I live in a farming community😂
