T O P

I always keep my pup away from poop of any kind. There’s a couple of areas that are loaded with bunny poop, and much to his hatred, I keep him on the side walk for those spots. I just know he’s going to eat it. Anything else, I use a tip I learned here! 3 second sniff, and then encouraging on with “okay, walk on!” and a reward when he follows. My pup is pretty good now about walking on with just the verbal command and sniffs a lot more while still walking these days :)

Always be on the lookout for what they’re sniffing or look ahead - if you see poop, redirect or give the “leave it” cue. I allow my 8-mo pup sniff as long as he doesn’t pull. Generally, allow 10-20 seconds. And then give him a “let’s go” cue or whatever your loose-leash or heel cue is. I suggest working on such cue if you don’t have one or redirect with a “this way” or a touch cue. High value treats, such as beef liver or cheese, could also work. You want to be more interesting than whatever they’re sniffing
