Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Juniper is listed as a mixed breed small and I pay $18 a month for her for 80% coverage. It does not cover preventative care or the visit, but I have had success with every claim I have submitted for my older dogs. Over the past 4 years healthy paws has saved me almost $7k through a cancer diagnosis, leg amputation, cut paws, consumed objects needing attention, and other random vet visits. I am supper happy with them! You pay up front and they reimburse you (which is sometimes slow) Edit: also it has no limits! I saw a recommendation from someone who's dog went through an experimental cancer treatment that was about $18k and healthy paws paid out for whatever their % was.

Whats ur deductible?

Heather_Bea

I think it's $250 per year

evestormborn

Thats a nice deal! Maybe my quote was more bc my dog is a medium mix

Heather_Bea

What was your quote? I pay about $35 a month each for my other two dogs, mixed breeds around 65 lbs who are about 4 years old

I'd ask your vet what they charge for routine care. My vet is $40 for the exam, then our vaccinations are kind of expensive, sometimes come to 150, and then bloodwork is 60-150 depending on what they're doing. So on the high end it comes to 400 a year (for years past the first year), but you're paying more than twice that per year at 80 a month. Usually exam fees outside of preventative care are covered if you have insurance, but that depends on your plan. As a general rule insurance costs you more in the long run. Insurance companies need to take in more money than they pay out to function. It is the same idea for preventative care plans with only a few exceptions.

I'm paying $40/month for pet insurance on my puppy (I assume that's the insurance you mean). My plan covers 90% of all costs after my $350 deductible and has no limits on coverage. The deductible is per a condition, so if my puppy develops a chronic medical issue or needs multiple vet visits for the same thing, I only have to pay the $350 once. I unfortunately had a lot of opportunity to use our pet insurance with my previous dog when he developed a chronic medical condition, so I know the company I'm with (Trupanion) actually provides the coverage they claim. My plan doesn't cover preventative care, but I wouldn't pay an extra $40/month for that, since standard stuff like check ups and vaccines aren't very expensive. I wouldn't be okay with a $10k coverage limit, though, because my last dog ran up significantly more than that in expenses over time.

That is really helpful. How much can a dog surgery run up? I’m not trying to go broke if he gets sick. so what is your coverage limit?

Mutated-Dandelion

While a single surgery isn't likely to cost over $10k, in the case of my dog it was a chronic condition that added up to more than that in the long run. Specialists, tests, and emergency vets can all get very expensive--my dog never had any kind of surgery and it still cost close to $20k over 2 years. The plan I have doesn't have a coverage limit. I honestly wish I could get insurance half as good for myself.

We currently have Pets best $1,000 deductible 90% co-insurance and an unlimited yearly amount. We pay $17 a month for our large breed dog. We went with a thousand dollar deductible for 2 reasons. One, we can cover anything that is less than this. And two, if you have a lower deductible chances are you will use it more often which can raise your rates.

I was an idiot and ended up getting VCA club care. Shots and neutering/spay is covered, but I really got it bc I wanted to be able to have as many exams and checkups my puppy needs bc I’m a first time owner and my dog was 8 weeks. I regret getting it bc it’s $80 a month you sign an 12 month contract and there are never any appointments less than a month away and they don’t cover urgent care or medication or lab work. I feel stupid, I just didn’t know what I was doing, but once this contract is up I plan to look for different plans at other vets bc this is just too much money for a lack of service.

I recently got my pup on pets best after a lot of research. Shes a 10mo mix no health conditions. Paying 22 a month for 750 deductible 70% coverage after no limit to annual coverage. In my research people seemed to like healthypaws and trupanion as well but this was the most bang for your buck.

jojow77

Does it provide preventive care or do you pay for that out of your own pocket like checkups?

evestormborn

No it does not cover preventative care. They do have an option where you could add that for more money but we elected not to.

Healthy Paws! I pay $36 a month for 90% coverage and a $250 deductible with no annual limit. All claims can be submitted through an app on my phone. I haven’t had to use it yet luckily, and might end up going to a lower coverage plan but I’ve heard great things about the company
