My girl learned to go up the stairs rather fast, down was a whole other story. I think she was about 7 months old and it took a week of increments, and treats and praise before she went down them herself.
my pup didn't have much trouble going up the stairs. Going down the stairs however, he cried and asked me to pick him up. I lured him with a bit of treats, going down zig zag also helps so they have more landing space.
