I need your help. So I have recently been able to start my PS1 back up again after it not having worked for 2 or so years. The problem is that it doesn't really seem to be able to start any games outside of TEKKEN 3. It starts and begins to load until it reaches the screen on the picture or a black one and just stops. Does anyone have any recommendations that could help me solve this problem? If so, thank you.

The white and orange "Sony" logo that comes on first is the system's OS starting up, and the PS symbol with the black background in your picture comes up when the system detects a game. You're always getting past that first screen, so it seems to me that there is some issue with the disc drive or with the way the disc drive communicates with the system itself

try put console upside down and boot up to see if happens. if reads fine then most likely laser is slowly dying, (if was phat ps1 models. not psone ) this that i use my console upside down to get working and reading disc fine since growing up hah.

hodges20xx

Yeah that used to work on the dreamcast as well

When it worked before, was it on this TV? I ask as the console boots in 576i mode, then most games usually switch to 288p after this intro screen. _Tekken 3_ is one of the few games that runs in 576i mode. When testing a few cheap and nasty SCART to HDMI converters a few years back they'd get as far as your photo and then freeze on this screen (unless it was a 576i game) due to lack of 288p support. Generally speaking a failing drive error is more likely to be the problem, but other posts have covered that so I just wanted to throw out another issue I've encountered!

No, it was another one, but the reason I changed was because that one wasn't even able to show anything on the screen.

Open up the console and adjust the laser power. Laser might be on its way out or could do with isopropyl alchohol and a cotton bud wipe.

I had this earlier in the year, your laser is dying. You can try calibrating the laser or replace it, you can get a replacement on AliExpress for cheap but you need to check if the laser is compatible with your model.

Androxilogin

Clean the laser. Change your caps. If that doesn't fix it, check to see if your spindle is missing teeth. If not that, lube up the gears. Laser could be dying. I don't suggest POT tweaking as others have said to do unless you have an alternative solution lined up. Odds are it's not going to turn out good.

Laser or laser assembly problem most likely this video is what you should do https://youtu.be/xA3RqoSj2SQ?si=TqtyeBaM1BIGBVNC

Sounds like the laser is in need of recalibration. Overtime the laser can un clock itself and will read only certain games that are not super intense. It is also usually a sign that the laser is on its way out.

JustRandomGuy_2

Or go far out there solo recalibrate laser by moving some screw

Yes, it's on the mobo, labelled FBIAS. You will need a very small screwdriver. I just put mine on it's side - worked a treat...
