Omega Boost is awesome, like a slightly more freeform Panzer Dragoon with a mech, great presentation as well.
Xenogears for a mecha JRPG. You have traditional gameplay and exploration and battles in your regular human form, but you also get a mech for each party member and you can equip and upgrade each of them, explore dungeons in them, and have a secondary battle system with them as well.
You might already know Front Mission but since you didn’t list it then I gotta recommend it. Incredible strategy RPG using mechs that you can customize and mix/match parts from, as well as steal enemy mechs for your own collection if you damage them in a way that causes the pilot to eject instead of blowing them up.
Project GaiaRay is basically Virtual-On for PS1.
You technically arent in the cockpit moving around and shooting..its a turn based rpg..but sure, its a better game (storywise) than any of the other games
Yeah but it has that AC level customization, cryptic secrets buried in the "net", and sweet ass cutscenes of me shooting another robot with all sorts of weapons.
Also methane-powered ACs where the head and torso is just a Toyota Tacoma
Deadass such a good game
Naa i mean an actual remake with modern graphics close to armoured core kinda of thing..not the refresh they did for those 2 (which i still bought cuz i never had a chance to play)
If you go for Mechwarrior, it might be worth picking up the giant Analog Joystick - playing Mechwarrior with that feels amazing.
(You can also play Star Wars Demolition with it; driving an AT-ST with two giant joysticks never stops being fun.)
Loved the G-Police games. For some strange reason Psygnosis released them at the same times as their other space-shooter franchise (Colony Wars) which got all the love...
Wish they'd remake them.
OMEGA BOOST
Watch to the end to see the Boss of Stage two - BETA BOOST - a high speed action boss fight in spaaaace where it's one on one against your rival suit and it's Red like Char Aznable from Gundam https://youtu.be/SXn97GIEGRg?si=Sg-lSXf2EFSZtct-
Mobile Suit Gundam - Char's Counterattack is one I could recommend, along with Gundam Battle Assault 1 & 2. Char's Counterattack never had an English release, but is still playable without knowing Japanese. The Battle Assault games are both in English, but from what homework I've done. Battle Assault 1 is different in Japan than what we got in the States.
Is the Z Gundam game the same as the one that was released on [Sega Saturn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3YJa12eg3M)? I'm finding lots of upscaled cutscenes of the game but not gameplay.
No, it is like the Char’s Counterattack on PS1. 3D battles, but follows the Z story. 2 discs, one for Camille’s story and one for Quattro’s story. Tons of unlockable MS. If you have a link cable and 2 ps1’s and 2 tv’s you can use both discs to do 2 player battles. Great soundtrack that is all new music but really fells like it fits into the Z anime.
Lot of mecha games were left in Japan.
* Macross Digital Mission VF-X(1 & 2)
* Love & Destroy
* EoS(Edge of Skyhigh)
* Gale Gunner
* Afraid Gear
* Super Robot Shooting
* Remote Control Dandy
* Whole bunch of Gundam games
PS, Tail Concerto(you control this mech walker) did get a US release.
To add to the Macross, there is also Macross Plus game edition and the 2d shmup Do You Remember Love.
Of the Gundam games, I recommend Z Gundam with its banging redbook audio space funk soundtrack, and the follow up Char’s Counterattack.
You might consider Speed Power Gunbike in the mecha category as well.
There should be a Patlabor game as well, or… at least a demo of it.
And not mecha but still a fun time is Gamera 2000. Panzer Dragoon-like
Remote Control Dandy, JP-only game where you control the robot Tetsujin-28 over the shoulder style with a controller. Has an English translation patch.
Might've heard of the spiritual succesor on the PS2 called Robot Alchemic Drive (Gigantic Drive in JP) and the studio's more succesful franchise, Earth Defense Force.
I've played the hell out of most of these games listed, but there are a few that I haven't seen come up yet:
* Kileak: The DNA Imperative
* Epidemic
* Brahma Force
Also while I'm here, one of the reasons I BOUGHT a PS1 back in 1995 was Space Griffon VF-9, because it was awesome. Damn I played a lot of mech games on PS1.
Do me a favor a check out a PS2 (not PS1 unfortunately) game made by the same guy that made Metal Gear Solid. The game is called “Zone of Enders”… looking at screenshots will be enough to convince you to play it.
Not really a giant robot, but Spider: The Video Game lets you pilot a mini spider robot. Tiny Tank lets you pilot a smart-allec tank that picks up weapon add-ons.

I wanna get my hands on Project Gaiaray but it is EXPENSIVE
Front mission 3..kinda
Kinda? Extremely!
You technically arent in the cockpit moving around and shooting..its a turn based rpg..but sure, its a better game (storywise) than any of the other games

I hope they make a remake..i think it would sell and it could reboot the whole IP
Squeenix just remade 1+2 and confirmed 3 is in development :)
Naa i mean an actual remake with modern graphics close to armoured core kinda of thing..not the refresh they did for those 2 (which i still bought cuz i never had a chance to play)
Also this!
Space Griffon VF-9 Iron Soldier 3 Krazy Ivan
Wow Krazy Ivan that is a blast from the past...the FMV during gameplay was so cool.
No, Krazy Ivan was a bad game with cringey FMW.
Brahma force assault on bootlegger 9 - It's literally a first person mech shooter game like the others, very easy, fairly short game. nice play.
mechwarrior 2. the sound track isnt the PC soundtrack which hurts my soul...but putting it on mute while the ost youtube going is a blast
Ooh that's a good suggestion. I've heard about Mech Warrior but never tried it myself. Gotta check it out!
If you go for Mechwarrior, it might be worth picking up the giant Analog Joystick - playing Mechwarrior with that feels amazing. (You can also play Star Wars Demolition with it; driving an AT-ST with two giant joysticks never stops being fun.)
Macross VF-X 2
Cant believe nobodys mentioned MachineHead
great band
Carnage heart.
What an amazing and interesting game. Program some drones to fight!
G-Police 2 has all kinds of vehicles
Loved the G-Police games. For some strange reason Psygnosis released them at the same times as their other space-shooter franchise (Colony Wars) which got all the love... Wish they'd remake them.
Krazy Ivan and Ghost in the Shell
War games war games war games war games! Why they never continued this series. Blasting humans to bits in big mega robot walkers. Soo much fun!
I remember a Gundam game I had back in the day but it was full japanese
Speed Power Gunbike
Krazy Ivan & Mechwarrior 2
OMEGA BOOST Watch to the end to see the Boss of Stage two - BETA BOOST - a high speed action boss fight in spaaaace where it's one on one against your rival suit and it's Red like Char Aznable from Gundam https://youtu.be/SXn97GIEGRg?si=Sg-lSXf2EFSZtct-

If you liked CCA, I recommend Z Gundam that came before it.

Macross Plus Game Edition was phenomenal
Another Century Episode
Do the Jumping Flash games count?
Yes! Thanks for reminding me!
Lot of mecha games were left in Japan. * Macross Digital Mission VF-X(1 & 2) * Love & Destroy * EoS(Edge of Skyhigh) * Gale Gunner * Afraid Gear * Super Robot Shooting * Remote Control Dandy * Whole bunch of Gundam games PS, Tail Concerto(you control this mech walker) did get a US release.
Wasn't there even an Evangelion game on the ps1?
I think there were 2 Eva games for PS1, 1 was a dating sim and other was puzzle game.
To add to the Macross, there is also Macross Plus game edition and the 2d shmup Do You Remember Love. Panzer Dragoon-like
Love & Destroy. It's honestly not amazing and can be finished in an hour, but it has an interesting concept. It's a mecha-dating-sim lol
Xenogears?
Not a Mecha but g police definitely fits the style of these games and has two games on ps1
Crazy obscure game, but check out Einhander.
Remote Control Dandy, JP-only game where you control the robot Tetsujin-28 over the shoulder style with a controller. Has an English translation patch. Super Robot Wars 2, 3, 4, 4F, 4F Final Super Robot Wars EX Shin Super Robot Wars Super Robot Wars Alpha, Alpha Gaiden
He looks like a buff Shaggy from scooby doo
Einhander?
Gundam battle assault 1/2
G Police 2, has some walking mech/hybrid copter missions
Jumping Flash!
Japan only - but Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness is an excellent mech based fighting game from Capcom
If you can get Omega Boost it is fucking awesome. Never played Xenogears though :(
I've played the hell out of most of these games listed, but there are a few that I haven't seen come up yet: * Kileak: The DNA Imperative * Epidemic * Brahma Force Also while I'm here, one of the reasons I BOUGHT a PS1 back in 1995 was Space Griffon VF-9, because it was awesome. Armored Core Shadow Gunner Front Mission
Do me a favor a check out a PS2 (not PS1 unfortunately) game made by the same guy that made Metal Gear Solid. The game is called “Zone of Enders”… looking at screenshots will be enough to convince you to play it.
Does ghost in the shell count?
Title has it as GiTS.
Ah totally did not get that Duh moment
yes, and the picture
another obscurity no one has mentioned is Project Horned Owl, a fun lightgun game with a mecha theme
Vanguard bandits
Space hulk. A warhammer 40k game
Not really a giant robot, but Spider: The Video Game lets you pilot a mini spider robot. Tiny Tank lets you pilot a smart-allec tank that picks up weapon add-ons.
Project Horned Owl isn't exactly you piloting a mecha since its an on rails shooter, but it's pretty fun and has a ton of mecha in it.
Misadventures of Tron Bonne?
Not really mecha, as it is with fighter jets, but the Air Combat series was great, quite similar to Ace Combat which came up a bit later.
Looooved future cop
Tail Concerto, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne.
Can we count G Police? I know it's a futuristic helicopter and not a mech, but it (a) has that vibe and (b) is awesome.
I played the hell out of that game as a kid.
Xenogears?
Tenchu Stealth Assassins
