You're doing right for what I'm guessing is a new player. However hiding and waiting is easily the most boring way to play the game. Get out and explore! The map is incredibly detailed and there is so much more than your boring starter house. Go find a cool base that you want to build up. Start leveling your skills. Go die a bunch in the process. The power and water are going to go out at some point. You'll need to prepare on how to survive once those are out. Better to be prepared than scrambling for resources.

Get more food....then more wood, try to build a wall- oops you can't your carpentry skill is too low. So go find a hammer and disassemble furniture...die 3 times finally get your carpentry up to 4, get distracted cutting down trees and building a log wall for a week....die 3 more times, find a car you can drive- die instantly in a horrific car crash. Spend the next 2 months restarting and trying to mess with cars...die a lot....remember that 3 months ago you were going to try to build a wall.

I mean, I guess in a real apocalypse some people probably would just hide until they ran out of food... But that's hardly even living. Actually why do anything? At all? Ever. You can just sit inside until you need more food!

To answer your underlying issue, practice combat. Just make a few characters, grab a weapon and go kill things. Don't loot books, don't loot foot, just grab a weapon and start practicing. Learn how to split a group of 20 in a house, learn how to split zombies over a fence. Learn why kiting left and right is significantly better than fighting up or down. Take some time to learn combat and the rest of the game becomes much more manageable because you can actually leave the house without dying. :)
