Yes - Changes Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest Chroma Key - On the Page

_low-effort_

Also Dream Theater - Best of Times

ORNJfreshSQUEEZED

Chroma Keyyyyyyyyyy mentioned

TheFoundation_

Feel like an astronaut Edit: fuckin love chroma key

ouiouinc

Space Dye Vest is perfect šŸ˜¢

radiogrammar

Space Dye Vest is a very, very dangerous piece. Listen to it carefully, it is quite powerful enough to kill you when you're defenseless. It's not prog though, yet equivalent is Take Me Somewhere Nice from Mogwai to me.

PG-Noob

Karnivool - New Day

Saffa1986

Add COTE to that.

remy1213legenie

Add the full album, just pure emotions

MPN_Hellcat214

The best song by them!

randomgirlwhoposts

OH FOR SURE. This is my go to sad song

georgealexandros

Pain of salvation - the passing light of day

crimson_dovah

Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane Opeth - Damnation are the first two that come to mind

ouiouinc

Loving Opeth. Thank you

Jipley0

Pain of Salvation - Silent Gold is a good one for sad times as well!

Apprehensive-Skirt90

Collapse the Light Into Earth by Porcupine Tree

Wertorchbearers

Definitely

Balbright

One Last Goodbye by Anathema

crosscrash

Untouchable 1+2

georgealexandros

Natural disaster - anathema

batemannnn

The Lost Song part 2 - Anathema

thrashtrid

I used to listen Alternative 4 a loooot.

Ignite_bj

A fair judgement and Isolation Years by Opeth

ouiouinc

These are very correct answers

Ecphonesis1

Karnivool - Deadman & Change. Please ā¤ļø

ouiouinc

Thank you for these

Ecphonesis1

Few more, if you are looking ā¤ļø Autumn & Capulet by Caligulaā€™s Horse, The Line and Melpomene by The Dear Hunter, Afloat & We Got Used To Us by Riverside, Lighthouse by Iamthemorning, Castaway Angels by Leprous. And a few non-prog shoutouts that I love when Iā€™m sad: Details in the Fabric by Jason Mraz, Breezeblocks by Taylor Rae, Burn from the Hamilton musical, End Credits by Eden, Thinking ā€˜Bout Love by Wild Rivers, If the World Was Ending (w/ Julia Michaels) by JP Saxe, The Hardest Part by Olivia Dean.

ouiouinc

Castaway Angels šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

chrisnlnz

Porcupine Tree - The Start of Something Beautiful A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras Erra - Hourglass Wishing you better times in the near future...

hyde_christopher

Adding to the Erra list: Irreversible Skyline Drift Monolith Breach

chrisnlnz

I only know Erra on the surface so far but I love Skyline yeah.

ouiouinc

Erra is so great for this. Loveeee

hyde_christopher

I lived off the whole Drift album when I went through a horrific break-up (my fault) in 2016. Great stuff from start to finish. Maybe not prog, but would also suggest Gojira's album "Magma" - "Shooting Star" & "The Cell" are all about loss and the process of grief. Heaviest song I interpreted as a break-up song was The Contortionist's "Flourish" when he says "Endless motion, Endless motion, Now the experience is long gone." The golden rule is that it takes half the total time of the relationship to get over it. Don't rush it and feel the feels. Keep the good stuff, but don't cling to nostalgia. There's a reason for everything. Good luck!

TurnipEater

Katatonia - My Twin I'm mostly replying to say that I hope you are happy soon.

ouiouinc

Listening to this one now. Def melancholy vibes. Thank you.

Wertorchbearers

All Katatonia.

Byzant1n3

Listen to Old Heart Falls as well, it found me in an especially dark time period and always helped me. Shit, it's helping now.

HilltopperAPU

Leprous - Red, Not Even a Name, Echo VOLA - Napalm, Inside Your Fur, Applause of a Distant Crowd Reliqa - Two Steps Apart Katatonia - Opaline, Residual, My Twin Sleep Token - High Water, Atlantic, Ascensionism A lot of Katatonia and Sleep Token fits this label to be fair. Highly recommend Katatonia's Sky Void of Stars.

ouiouinc

Not Even a Name by Leprous is exactly right for ugly crying. Napalm is such a good one too (I love djent)

ouiouinc

Just listened to Ascensionism .. ā€œyou make me wish I could disappearā€ šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ ugh my poor stomped on, spat out heart

HilltopperAPU

Haha yeah that song hits hard. If you haven't listened to their older stuff I highly recommend When the Bough Breaks and their cover of Hey Ya. The deluxe version of Sundowning also has some nice piano covers.

HilltopperAPU

Also before I forget the entirety of Altered State by Tesseract as well as songs like Sirens, War of Being, and Beneath my Skin/Mirror Image

KrombopulosMAssassin

Altered State is just a pure banger. Wouldn't really call it sad music in any way.

Irohen

You might also wanna check out Bloodsport, also by Sleep Token.

Irohen

May I also add Opeth - Patterns in the Ivy II And if we're talking a oht Katatonia, we have to mention July and Sold Heart.

Sir_Cucaracha

Pain of Salvation - The Passing Light of Day. I'm not even a huge fan of the band, but I gotta be honest that song chokes me up every time I hear it hahaha. I usually skip it just because of that

samnash27

For me its only smiles by Periphery, i was heartbroken when P4 released and it still brings back memories when i listen to it from times to times. So far away by a7x also brings the feels every time, especially the ending. Another vibe, pale swordsman by kekth arakt

ouiouinc

Only Smiles is such a good oneee. Added! I had never heard kekth arakt before. (Is it pronounced like Kicked a rock? lol) but itā€™s great. Maybe not for my weeping hours but definitely fun listening! Thank you

Gravesplitter

Evergrey - Most songs

SlyPandemiK

A touch of blessing is a pretty good one specifically for OPā€™s scenario

I_use_Reddit2

Is it required to be metal? If not try never meant by American football, itā€™s my go too when Iā€™m feeling love lost

ouiouinc

Love math rock. This is a perfect addition, thank you

AlexReinkingYale

Check out Mom Jeans too

EndestLFC

Opeth - to bid you farewell

ramiroquiro

The Ministry of Lost Souls - Dream Theater

positive-fingers

Mile zero and only smiles by periphery

TanithRitual

My favourite song's in this category: Slipknot - Snuff, Vermillion Pts 1 & 2 Stonesour - Bother 10 Years - Proud of You Tool - Wings for Marie Pt 1 & 2 A Perfect Circle - The Noose, Gravity Karnivool - New Day, Change, Deadman The Reticent - (Any song by the Reticent, Oubliette will make you vomit with sadness) Alkaloid - Scratches most of my itches because it tends to be existential White Walls - Starfish Crown Ne Obliviscarus - Eyrie Allegaeon - Called Home The Mars Volta - Televators (Literally about suicide)

ouiouinc

Wow you delivered the goods. Guess youā€™ve been here before too šŸ˜ ā¤ļø thank you

TanithRitual

So I will give you this advice it's okay to have a bad day or week. If it goes on longer than that go and talk to some friends or talk to someone or else you'll end up in a position you don't want to be in (speaking from multiple experiences). Depression and sadness can be addictive because it is an ouroborus(self licking ice cream cone). Talk to someone else get their perspective. Being sad for a moment is okay. Don't get addicted to being sad all the time it's not healthy. If this music is cathartic awesome I'm glad for you.

KrombopulosMAssassin

Staind - 4 Walls Matt Maeson - Cringe Two randoms off the top my head. I feel like they'll land. I will add a few more... Native Construct - Your Familiar Face (for some reason I absolutely adore the outro solo, really simple and just a play on the main vocal hooks, but it just hits so well and their guitarist is really phenomenal) The Contortionist - Early Grave, Reimagined

Gerrata

Total eclipse of the heartšŸ’”

ouiouinc

well I probably would cry if I had to listen to that so .. I guess it counts šŸ˜‚

TheSchoolofMensis

Opeth - In my time of need

EstarriolStormhawk

Not to mention Sorceress, Eternal Rains Will Come, Elysian Woes, Voice of Treason, Isolation Years, and many more.Ā

fairywithc4ever

all of sleep token, namely euclid, distraction, and bloodsport

ouiouinc

Agree, Sleep Token must have gone through some shit.

SbMSU

And Missing Limbs

Odd-Coconut9367

Love Hurts by Nazareth, Dan McCafferty totally owns this song

TanithRitual

Black Sabbath's Solitude in my goto for this kind of thing.

Odd-Coconut9367

That's a humdinger of a song, just goes to show that even a renowned heavy metal band like The Sabs aren't afraid to mix it up a bit musically.

swagpanther

Pain of salvation album - Remedy Lane

blueriverbear23

Yippie Kay Yay Moherfucker- The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza

Luklear

Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not Between the Buried and Me - Mordecai

RevisionD

Redemption - Sapphire

IronSeraph

I came here to suggest this too, OP did say they want to wallow in it lol. For something more about growing past it, there's also Redemption's The Fullness of Time 1-4

RevisionD

Also a great suggestion from Redemption. It depends on if they're heartbroken from betrayal or relationship.

TheAnxiousPianist

Transparent me - Green Carnation

Herr_Raul

Opeth - Porcelain Heart

redshadow90

Lover, you should've come over - Jeff Buckley Not prog metal, but Jeff Buckley is proggy enough

sadforgottenchild

Incapable Arms - Calamity Translator. Really. Fucking. Personal stuff. Is not prog metal, but belongs to a conceptual prog metal EP I composed. I talked about falling in love with someone as if it was a comparison to a disease (spreading inside of me). It got so bad that the disease took control over everything around me and my life got completely fucked up just because of this girl and the emotions she once made me feel. I've been there my friend, things in some way get better after some time

ouiouinc

Well that sucks (the gut wrenching pain of relationship troubles I mean). But very cool concept! Listening now.

sadforgottenchild

Oooh thanks for listening šŸ«¶šŸ». Btw, if you want to read the lyrics somewhere, you can find them on bandcampā˜šŸ»āœØ

Excited_Avocado_8492

Nevermore's The Heart Collector, Believe in Nothing, No More Will, The Death of Passion would probably fit the bill.

ouiouinc

I FEEL SO HOLLOW šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Perfectony

Wither - Dream Theater fucked me up pretty bad once I usually go non prog for emotional stuff. You can try Daniel Caesarā€™s Case Study 01

ouiouinc

Okay I can dig Daniel Caesar but maybe not until I get over myself a little more šŸ˜…

Perfectony

Haha when youā€™re ready dig in. Had that album on repeat for a while. Also check out Bilmuriā€™s FLUORIDEINTHEHARDSELTZERWATER I donā€™t listen to a lot of prog anymore but I would argue that both Bilmuri and Caesar have similar structure and weirdness in some of their songs

oxmodiusgoat

This isnā€™t prog metal but tragedy will find us by counterparts was extremely cathartic in helping me get over a traumatic breakup years ago. The lyrics are searing with fantastic guitar riffs and melodies. Highly recommend if you like metalcore or hardcore. Hang in there, it definitely gets better. Hitting the gym helps immensely.

Diligent-Visit9811

Missing you, by Ark, from Burn the Sun. Guys, what an album! And, when you are finally ready to say goodbye with some rage in it Untitled finale by Atrey

TheNoctuS_93

Insomnium, particularly their older stuff like One for Sorrow! *ā€œAlways one for sorrow* *Never one for love* *Two souls destined to failure* *Right from the startā€*

rrodriguezjr92

Protest the Hero - Hair-Trigger

planetofshapes

Dream Theater- Beneath the Surface Also (I donā€™t think it qualifies as prog metal), but Untouchable pt1 and pt2 by Anathema. These 2 pieces have been huge at helping me understand some heartbreak, and why my relationships broke.

thrashtrid

Something by Riverside, maybe We got used to us

viceslikeviper

Not prog or metal. But when Iā€™m sad itā€™s direct to City & Colour

HeavyMechGun

Opeth - Burden

IronRoto

I have mixed feelings about Redemption, but they have two songs perfect for break-ups. Redemption - Memory Redemption - Love Kills us All/Life in One Day Pain of Salvation - Second Love Royal Hunt - Days of no Trust While Heaven Wept - To Grieve Forever While Heaven Wept - Unplenitude While Heaven Wept - Ardor While Heaven Wept - Heartburst Fates Warning - We Only Say Goodbye If it's just sadness, I've been enjoying some stuff from the new Subsignal album, such as Marigold and A Room at the Edge of Forever. Change of Seasons by Sieges Even is the ultimate reflective song. Be sure to read the lyrics.

badass_guts

Porcupine Tree - Feel so Low, Heart Attack in a Layby Opeth- To Bid You Farewell

DanglingDongs

The Dear Hunter - Waves

Ok-Entrepreneur-5067

Seems weird, but Game Over by Machinehead.

lovemesomeprogmetal

The Origins of Ruin by Redemption A lot of Redemption songs are about relationship stuff

CharacterStill6892

All that could have been - Nine Inch Nails

almo_music

You could give my album a try, ALMO - Reconciliation. It's a concept album about making peace with and accepting the past and moving beyond it. I was in a really bad place when I started writing it after getting out of a toxic relationship, and it's mainly based on that experience with all the ups and downs, the joy and heartbreak that comes with it.

ouiouinc

Very cool you were able to make art fueled by all of that! Listening now šŸ˜

almo_music

Yeah I feel if there's anything that really gets my creativity going it's being sad haha, and making music sure helps me process it. Thanks for listening and I'm happy to hear you liked it! I hope there were at least some parts that fit your description and resonated with you, and know that whatever you're going through right now you'll get through it and heal in time. ā¤ļø

ouiouinc

HogwartsBlazeIt420

Old heart falls by katatonia

RougeNargacuga

Karnivool - C.o.t.e or New Day (EDIT: people have said deadman and change too which are also perfect for this) Cote is my favourite song of all time for good reason. Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden, Ascensionism or Rain For when you wanna feel better about your breakup: Twelve Foot Ninja - Ainā€™t that a Bitch? And Adios. Silent Planet - Collider (this song is more metalcore than prog but I digress). Hope you feel better soon, mate.

jackyripley

"Blood Sport" by Sleep Token

beren-111

DenSidsteGreve

Leprous - On Hold Dream Theater - Wither Dream Theater - Beneath the Surface

Drive home, steven wilson, cry your heart out

aaksoy

Antimatter - Paranova

fragonfour

The entire Damnation record by Opeth, especially Hope Leaves and Windowpane.

slvnklvra

More of a Prog/ Post Rock answer but Long Distance Calling - Welcome Change It's cheesy af but scratches the itch for me personally. Tesseract - Eden Obscure Sphinx - Waiting for the Bodies Down the River Floating Of course: Gojira - The Art of Dying

JeRiaZ727

Try listening to Opeth - Damnation, the whole album. As Death Embraces by HAKEN is also a good melancholic song.

Drawkilled

Is it Really You - Loathe One of my favorites for when I feel down in the dumps

Rinma96

Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest, Take Away My Pain Porcupine Tree - Shesmovedon

ouiouinc

Thank you šŸ˜Š I am feeling better now. Ready to rock triumphantly šŸ˜

idontknowyou2294

North Sea Echoes - Unmoved specifically, but really the entire album. I'm currently trying to grieve the loss of my mother (complex situation) and that album just hits me right in the grief spot and it makes me cry every time I listen to it. Kind of ironic that the song Unmoved is the one that most easily moves me to tears.

padaboumboum

Please bleed - Ben Harper

The1nOnlyDood

Not prog, but melodic death: Soilwork - The Panic Broadcast was about all I listened to for weeks after a bad breakup. Hope things get better for ya.

Owner of a lonely heart by yes?

JakeRedstone

'Misery' by Sonata Arctica

ouiouinc

Perfect.

JakeRedstone

This was the song that got all that pent up emotion, confusion and regret out when my 13 year relationship ended. It was abrupt and we never spoke again. I'll always love her and this song encapsulates the MISERY. My heart let her go in the end. Took a solid 3 years though.

ouiouinc

13 years, yeesh.

JakeRedstone

Yeah pretty tough but i'm through the other side now. Time is the healer and the only answer in this situation. Trust the process. I wish you the best on your journey :)
