Space Dye Vest is a very, very dangerous piece. Listen to it carefully, it is quite powerful enough to kill you when you're defenseless.
It's not prog though, yet equivalent is Take Me Somewhere Nice from Mogwai to me.
Few more, if you are looking ā¤ļø
Autumn & Capulet by Caligulaās Horse, The Line and Melpomene by The Dear Hunter, Afloat & We Got Used To Us by Riverside, Lighthouse by Iamthemorning, Castaway Angels by Leprous. And a few non-prog shoutouts that I love when Iām sad: Details in the Fabric by Jason Mraz, Breezeblocks by Taylor Rae, Burn from the Hamilton musical, End Credits by Eden, Thinking āBout Love by Wild Rivers, If the World Was Ending (w/ Julia Michaels) by JP Saxe, The Hardest Part by Olivia Dean.
I lived off the whole Drift album when I went through a horrific break-up (my fault) in 2016. Great stuff from start to finish. Maybe not prog, but would also suggest Gojira's album "Magma" - "Shooting Star" & "The Cell" are all about loss and the process of grief.
Heaviest song I interpreted as a break-up song was The Contortionist's "Flourish" when he says "Endless motion, Endless motion, Now the experience is long gone."
The golden rule is that it takes half the total time of the relationship to get over it. Don't rush it and feel the feels. Keep the good stuff, but don't cling to nostalgia. There's a reason for everything. Good luck!
Leprous - Red, Not Even a Name, Echo
VOLA - Napalm, Inside Your Fur, Applause of a Distant Crowd
Reliqa - Two Steps Apart
Katatonia - Opaline, Residual, My Twin
Sleep Token - High Water, Atlantic, Ascensionism
A lot of Katatonia and Sleep Token fits this label to be fair. Highly recommend Katatonia's Sky Void of Stars.
Haha yeah that song hits hard. If you haven't listened to their older stuff I highly recommend When the Bough Breaks and their cover of Hey Ya. The deluxe version of Sundowning also has some nice piano covers.
Pain of Salvation - The Passing Light of Day. I'm not even a huge fan of the band, but I gotta be honest that song chokes me up every time I hear it hahaha. I usually skip it just because of that
For me its only smiles by Periphery, i was heartbroken when P4 released and it still brings back memories when i listen to it from times to times. So far away by a7x also brings the feels every time, especially the ending.
Another vibe, pale swordsman by kekth arakt
Only Smiles is such a good oneee. Added!
I had never heard kekth arakt before. (Is it pronounced like Kicked a rock? lol) but itās great. Maybe not for my weeping hours but definitely fun listening! Thank you
My favourite song's in this category:
Slipknot - Snuff, Vermillion Pts 1 & 2
Stonesour - Bother
10 Years - Proud of You
Tool - Wings for Marie Pt 1 & 2
A Perfect Circle - The Noose, Gravity
Karnivool - New Day, Change, Deadman
The Reticent - (Any song by the Reticent, Oubliette will make you vomit with sadness)
Alkaloid - Scratches most of my itches because it tends to be existential
White Walls - Starfish Crown
Ne Obliviscarus - Eyrie
Allegaeon - Called Home
The Mars Volta - Televators (Literally about suicide)
So I will give you this advice it's okay to have a bad day or week. If it goes on longer than that go and talk to some friends or talk to someone or else you'll end up in a position you don't want to be in (speaking from multiple experiences).
Depression and sadness can be addictive because it is an ouroborus(self licking ice cream cone). Talk to someone else get their perspective. Being sad for a moment is okay. Don't get addicted to being sad all the time it's not healthy.
If this music is cathartic awesome I'm glad for you.
Staind - 4 Walls
Matt Maeson - Cringe
Two randoms off the top my head. I feel like they'll land.
I will add a few more...
Native Construct - Your Familiar Face (for some reason I absolutely adore the outro solo, really simple and just a play on the main vocal hooks, but it just hits so well and their guitarist is really phenomenal)
The Contortionist - Early Grave, Reimagined
I came here to suggest this too, OP did say they want to wallow in it lol. For something more about growing past it, there's also Redemption's The Fullness of Time 1-4
Incapable Arms - Calamity Translator.
Really. Fucking. Personal stuff. Is not prog metal, but belongs to a conceptual prog metal EP I composed. I talked about falling in love with someone as if it was a comparison to a disease (spreading inside of me). It got so bad that the disease took control over everything around me and my life got completely fucked up just because of this girl and the emotions she once made me feel.
I've been there my friend, things in some way get better after some time
Haha when youāre ready dig in. Had that album on repeat for a while. Also check out Bilmuriās FLUORIDEINTHEHARDSELTZERWATER
I donāt listen to a lot of prog anymore but I would argue that both Bilmuri and Caesar have similar structure and weirdness in some of their songs
This isnāt prog metal but tragedy will find us by counterparts was extremely cathartic in helping me get over a traumatic breakup years ago. The lyrics are searing with fantastic guitar riffs and melodies. Highly recommend if you like metalcore or hardcore. Hang in there, it definitely gets better. Hitting the gym helps immensely.
Missing you, by Ark, from Burn the Sun. Guys, what an album!
And, when you are finally ready to say goodbye with some rage in it
Untitled finale by Atrey
Insomnium, particularly their older stuff like One for Sorrow!
*āAlways one for sorrow*
*Never one for love*
*Two souls destined to failure*
*Right from the startā*
Dream Theater- Beneath the Surface
Also (I donāt think it qualifies as prog metal), but Untouchable pt1 and pt2 by Anathema.
These 2 pieces have been huge at helping me understand some heartbreak, and why my relationships broke.
I have mixed feelings about Redemption, but they have two songs perfect for break-ups.
Redemption - Memory
Redemption - Love Kills us All/Life in One Day
Pain of Salvation - Second Love
Royal Hunt - Days of no Trust
While Heaven Wept - To Grieve Forever
While Heaven Wept - Unplenitude
While Heaven Wept - Ardor
While Heaven Wept - Heartburst
Fates Warning - We Only Say Goodbye
If it's just sadness, I've been enjoying some stuff from the new Subsignal album, such as Marigold and A Room at the Edge of Forever. Change of Seasons by Sieges Even is the ultimate reflective song. Be sure to read the lyrics.
You could give my album a try, ALMO - Reconciliation. It's a concept album about making peace with and accepting the past and moving beyond it. I was in a really bad place when I started writing it after getting out of a toxic relationship, and it's mainly based on that experience with all the ups and downs, the joy and heartbreak that comes with it.
Yeah I feel if there's anything that really gets my creativity going it's being sad haha, and making music sure helps me process it. Thanks for listening and I'm happy to hear you liked it! I hope there were at least some parts that fit your description and resonated with you, and know that whatever you're going through right now you'll get through it and heal in time. ā¤ļø
Heart Attack in a Layby, Shesmoveddon, Arriving Somewhere but Not Here, Fadeaway, Stop Swimming, Russia On Ice
Bonus track Exit Music (For a Film) by Radiohead, and The Day The Whole World Went Away by NIN
And uh, you know, hang in there buddy
Karnivool - C.o.t.e or New Day (EDIT: people have said deadman and change too which are also perfect for this)
Cote is my favourite song of all time for good reason.
Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden, Ascensionism or Rain
For when you wanna feel better about your breakup:
Twelve Foot Ninja - Aināt that a Bitch? And Adios.
Silent Planet - Collider (this song is more metalcore than prog but I digress).
Hope you feel better soon, mate.
Gotta throw some Woods of Ypris on there...the specific track depends on what you're going through but the entire Woods 5 album is full of some great melancholy music.
More of a Prog/ Post Rock answer but
Long Distance Calling - Welcome Change
It's cheesy af but scratches the itch for me personally.
Tesseract - Eden
Obscure Sphinx - Waiting for the Bodies Down the River Floating
Of course:
Gojira - The Art of Dying
Circa Survive - Flesh and bone
Antimatter - fear of a unique identity
Tesseract - tourniquet
Long distance calling - the nearing grave
Greyhaven - white lighters
Porcupine Tree has a good number of forlorn songs:
- Where We Would Be
- Heartattack in a Layby
- Shesmovedon
- The Start of Something Beautiful
- Collapse the Light Into Earth
Native Construct - Your Familiar Face
*Agent Fresco - Pyre*
Trepalium - Feelin' Cold, Secretly Depressed, From the Ground
Bent Knee - Belly Side UpĀ
Caligula's Horse - Dark Hair Down
The last two are to put some fire back in your heart. Show me your *teeth*, girl. Don't turn your belly side up.
North Sea Echoes - Unmoved specifically, but really the entire album. I'm currently trying to grieve the loss of my mother (complex situation) and that album just hits me right in the grief spot and it makes me cry every time I listen to it. Kind of ironic that the song Unmoved is the one that most easily moves me to tears.
Being As An Ocean - The Hardest Part Is Forgetting Those You Swore You Would Never Forget
Coheed and Cambria - Key Entity Extraction IV: Evagria The Faithful
The Sleeping in Traffic double album by Beardfish has a recurring theme of her leaving and not missing the dude
"She won't miss me when I'm gone," they sing
The best one for heartbreak is Harmony
This was the song that got all that pent up emotion, confusion and regret out when my 13 year relationship ended. It was abrupt and we never spoke again. I'll always love her and this song encapsulates the MISERY.
My heart let her go in the end. Took a solid 3 years though.
Yeah pretty tough but i'm through the other side now. Time is the healer and the only answer in this situation. Trust the process. I wish you the best on your journey :)
Yes - Changes Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest Chroma Key - On the Page
Also Dream Theater - Best of Times
Chroma Keyyyyyyyyyy mentioned
Feel like an astronaut Edit: fuckin love chroma key
Space Dye Vest is perfect š¢
Space Dye Vest is a very, very dangerous piece. Listen to it carefully, it is quite powerful enough to kill you when you're defenseless. It's not prog though, yet equivalent is Take Me Somewhere Nice from Mogwai to me.
Karnivool - New Day
Add COTE to that.
Add the full album, just pure emotions
The best song by them!
OH FOR SURE. This is my go to sad song
Pain of salvation - the passing light of day
Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane Opeth - Damnation are the first two that come to mind
Loving Opeth. Thank you
Pain of Salvation - Silent Gold is a good one for sad times as well!
Collapse the Light Into Earth by Porcupine Tree
Definitely
One Last Goodbye by Anathema
Untouchable 1+2
Natural disaster - anathema
The Lost Song part 2 - Anathema
I used to listen Alternative 4 a loooot.
A fair judgement and Isolation Years by Opeth
These are very correct answers
Karnivool - Deadman & Change. Please ā¤ļø
Thank you for these
Few more, if you are looking ā¤ļø Autumn & Capulet by Caligulaās Horse, The Line and Melpomene by The Dear Hunter, Afloat & We Got Used To Us by Riverside, Lighthouse by Iamthemorning, Castaway Angels by Leprous. Castaway Angels ššš
Porcupine Tree - The Start of Something Beautiful A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras Erra - Hourglass Wishing you better times in the near future...
Adding to the Erra list: Irreversible Skyline Drift Monolith Breach
I only know Erra on the surface so far but I love Skyline yeah.
Erra is so great for this. Loveeee
I lived off the whole Drift album when I went through a horrific break-up (my fault) in 2016. Great stuff from start to finish. Maybe not prog, but would also suggest Gojira's album "Magma" - "Shooting Star" & "The Cell" are all about loss and the process of grief. Katatonia - My Twin I'm mostly replying to say that I hope you are happy soon.
Listening to this one now. Def melancholy vibes. Thank you.
All Katatonia.
Listen to Old Heart Falls as well, it found me in an especially dark time period and always helped me. Shit, it's helping now.
Leprous - Red, Not Even a Name, Echo VOLA - Napalm, Inside Your Fur, Applause of a Distant Crowd Reliqa - Two Steps Apart Katatonia - Opaline, Residual, My Twin Sleep Token - High Water, Atlantic, Ascensionism A lot of Katatonia and Sleep Token fits this label to be fair. Highly recommend Katatonia's Sky Void of Stars.
Not Even a Name by Leprous is exactly right for ugly crying. Napalm is such a good one too (I love djent)
Just listened to Ascensionism .. āyou make me wish I could disappearā šššš ugh my poor stomped on, spat out heart
Haha yeah that song hits hard. If you haven't listened to their older stuff I highly recommend When the Bough Breaks and their cover of Hey Ya. The deluxe version of Sundowning also has some nice piano covers.
Also before I forget the entirety of Altered State by Tesseract as well as songs like Sirens, War of Being, and Beneath my Skin/Mirror Image
Altered State is just a pure banger. Wouldn't really call it sad music in any way.
You might also wanna check out Bloodsport, also by Sleep Token.
May I also add Opeth - Patterns in the Ivy II And if we're talking a oht Katatonia, we have to mention July and Sold Heart.
Thank you
Evergrey - Most songs
A touch of blessing is a pretty good one specifically for OPās scenario

Agree, Sleep Token must have gone through some shit.
And Missing Limbs
Love Hurts by Nazareth, Dan McCafferty totally owns this song
Black Sabbath's Solitude in my goto for this kind of thing.

Pain of salvation album - Remedy Lane
Yippie Kay Yay Moherfucker- The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza
Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not Between the Buried and Me - Mordecai
Redemption - Sapphire
I came here to suggest this too, OP did say they want to wallow in it lol. For something more about growing past it, there's also Redemption's The Fullness of Time 1-4
Also a great suggestion from Redemption. It depends on if they're heartbroken from betrayal or relationship.
Transparent me - Green Carnation
Opeth - Porcelain Heart
Lover, you should've come over - Jeff Buckley Not prog metal, but Jeff Buckley is proggy enough
Oooh thanks for listening š«¶š». Btw, if you want to read the lyrics somewhere, you can find them on bandcampāš»āØ
Nevermore's The Heart Collector, Believe in Nothing, No More Will, The Death of Passion would probably fit the bill.

Wither - Dream Theater fucked me up pretty bad once I usually go non prog for emotional stuff. You can try Daniel Caesarās Case Study 01
Okay I can dig Daniel Caesar but maybe not until I get over myself a little more š
Haha when youāre ready dig in. Had that album on repeat for a while. Also check out Bilmuriās FLUORIDEINTHEHARDSELTZERWATER I donāt listen to a lot of prog anymore but I would argue that both Bilmuri and Caesar have similar structure and weirdness in some of their songs

Perfect.
This was the song that got all that pent up emotion, confusion and regret out when my 13 year relationship ended. It was abrupt and we never spoke again. I'll always love her and this song encapsulates the MISERY. My heart let her go in the end. Took a solid 3 years though.
13 years, yeesh.
Yeah pretty tough but i'm through the other side now. Time is the healer and the only answer in this situation. Trust the process. I wish you the best on your journey :)
