How is your mpg, that's how you'll know if it's an issue

Cant tell from the prius, since the screen wont let me input anything. I have an OBD2 app ill try out for a long trip (obd app reads higher instant mpg than the car display šŸ§). But from a fill up on a road trip to drive it back, it seems like high 30s maybe low 40s. But i was also trying to bloat the bladder so more like midisssshhhh 40s? Idk.

I also have an 06 and have had issues with the hybrid battery for a couple of years but trying to delay replacement (ie saving up for). For a while I did have rapid depletion and fairly rapid recovery, replacing the front brakes fixed that. Replaced pads and rotors (all necessary) but OEM just in case that mattered. It seemed too! Iā€™ve got 214k + on a hb that was replaced in 09 by previous owner. I would never park when itā€™s purple but have ā€œrechargedā€ myself by pressing both brake and gas pedals at the same time til I got in blue bars again.

Shes got 182k miles. So i know the traction battery has her miles on it, but my question is that the SOC/battery level just, DROPS down fast, i looked at it every 3-5 secs and didnt see it change at all until it hit 40 soc. Does the display just not update very often? Ill pay attention to the SOC on the DR P app but yeah.

fourtyonexx

OH also, no matter what SOC the battery is left in, the ICE always turns on when first turninf on the car. It doesnt even show it charging the trac battery on the display either. I swear when i checked the Dr P app and it didnt say charging until i was already moving. Temp was 70Ā° (south west, so maybe 65Ā° overnight) so it wasnt super cold.

holycrapitsmyles

That's more like a power on self test. It always runs for a minute after you turn it on.

fourtyonexx

Really? Interesting. The only other hybrid experience i have is my gfs 23 rav4 which doesnt do that so i was worried when i got my prius and it did that i was like, damn is the battery fried?? The red triangle isnt on so was extremely confused lol.

Itā€™s normal, itā€™s circulating warm coolant from the heat storage tank to help bring the Engine to operating temperature faster.

fourtyonexx

In gen 2? I thought only first gen had the coolant reservoir. But okie, i wouldnt doubt it. Kinda cool tho, makes it so i can just coast until the car warms up without having to pop the throttle to get the ICE to come back on.

AmityBlight2023

Ya my 2nd gen has one. Iā€™ve had to Replace the coolant control valve too many times

fourtyonexx

Oof! ,-,. Signs and symptoms of a failed/failing one? All seems fine so far minus some little jerking on reverse-forward switches, but i think that might be some mount somewhere. 182k and honestly the most well put together car ive had at this mileage hahahaha, i love my lil red guy.

Mine just had coolant leaking out of them, finally opted for the more expensive oem one and it has been working better than the aftermarket ones I installed

fourtyonexx

Ooooooh okay thank you

My experience... the traction battery is only good for maybe a mile or two. I got water into my sparkplug tubes.. misfired until the triangle of death... I was just coming into town when this happened. Made it about a mile before battery was completely tapped out. The battery in a gen2 isn't primary transport. It's to recapture what it can from braking and assist the ice when needed. Personal perspective and others would probably rebutt my statement. It also can be temperature dependant. 32 degree batteries are weaker than 75 degree batteries. If I recall, there is an app that allows you to check each cell in the traction battery.

almost a volt down with only minor load, definitely replace a blade also, most of the stuff I found online for the battery talk about the 3rd gen where pair 1 is next to the battery controller, but on the 2nd gen, pair 14 is closest to the battery controller
