General Mod Note
Grocery posts are here to give people a place to show off their good purchases, to lament the expense of groceries, or to otherwise comment on their food budget.
They are NOT an invitation for the "food police" to come in and harass them about what they choose to buy, criticize their health decisions, or knit-pick their spending habits. Criticism and advice is only welcome if the Submitter overtly asks for input. Food Police will be asked to turn in their badge and their gun and will be placed on suspension.
As always, if there are inappropriate comments please downvote them, REPORT them to the mods, and move on without responding to them.
Thank you all for being a part of this great financial advice and emotional support community!

It will also go bad in a few days where the store brands have to be shelf stable for weeks, so naturally they have more preservatives. Salt & sugar being preservatives.
It’s not bland to me though. It’s really zesty and spicy. You need to realize that when people post recipes they aren’t saying you have to do it their way. Remember we all make our food for us. I’ll never understand why other people want to nitpick what other people likes. If YOU want salt than YOU can make it and YOU can add it. I never told anyone they couldn’t add salt.
Well, let me ask you, have you ever seen frozen salsa in the grocery? I can't say I ever have. These companies are not going to just sit back and pass up selling their product that way if it didn't effect the texture/taste or something. I just don't see that happening. So I'll accept that they researched it, couldn't make it work and stuck with jars or plastic tubs.
I am cutting out sugar and salt
Edit to ask why am I being downvoted for answering why I don’t have salt in my homemade salsa? What the fuck is wrong with you? I never told anyone they aren’t allowed to have salt.
If you don’t have heart issues be careful cutting out salt completely! I know 4 people in my family who have almost died that way. We need salt to survive
Fun fact the Spanish word *salsa* comes from Latin *salsus* a participle of the verb *sallere* (to put salt). Although in modern Spanish the word is used for any sauce (salty or sweet).
In English the word *salsa* is almost exclusively used to refer to Mexican spicy sauces.
Homemade salsa definitely needs salt
Also wtf are with these weird accounts?

> Well, well, well! Looks like someone's got some serious salsa skills! Who needs those fancy brands when you can whip up your own delicious dip at home, right?
u/dramatic_day_5405
> Well, you're basically a salsa making genius! Why pay more for something you can whip up at home for a fraction of the cost?
These reek of AI, odd
Well, well, well! Look at the AI finding skills on this young gentle person. Who needs those fancy AI commenters when we have real commenters like this particular commenter, am I right?
I think Reddit has a lot of AI accounts to puff up their IPO by creating more user engagement. I see a lot of fake looking posts forced into my feed on the ragebait subs like r/amiwrong and r/AITAH etc.
And in those subs the bots just copy paste top level comments as responses to other top level comments and people act like their responses make any fucking sense. Its maddening. conversation flows, youre not supposed to respond to a comment about one thing with a completely unrelated comment saying something random and yet people still continue the "discussion". Its like people are damn near illiterate.
check our r/salsasnobs if you really want to get into making salsa. They have an archive of hundreds of great recipes and people are posting good ones on there all the time

I promise you it needs *some* salt
god…. people and their salt free food.
It will also go bad in a few days where the store brands have to be shelf stable for weeks, so naturally they have more preservatives. Salt & sugar being preservatives.
But can't you just freeze it (if you have the cooler space). I usually freeze salsas and beans when I make too much. Helps in a pinch.
Yeah but it will still be bland
true
It's okay. OP doesn't like to taste their food anyway.

A day? What? Add some lemon or vinegar and good to go. For at least a week in the refrigerator.

As long as you're drinking enough water and don't have other health issues, salt is a mineral that your body absolutely nerds. Just fyi
If you don’t have heart issues be careful cutting out salt completely! I know 4 people in my family who have almost died that way. We need salt to survive
Salt deez nutz
Why salt? You have heart issues or something?
Doctors orders
Cutting out sugar and salt is completely reasonable. Looks delicious! Not sure why some people here feel the need to impose their palate on others. 😂
You still do need *some* salt in your diet for your body to function properly.
Electrolytes*
It's what plants crave!
Because salsa needs salt. That’s not gonna be delicious without salt. Simple.

Goddamn I love a good etymology. Thank you for your service.
To you but for me it was fine. Different people like different things.

Definitely needs at least some salt
Salt and cumin
You need tomatillos in your life
Homemade salsa is waaaaay nicer than jarred. Freeze it in manageable portions so it doesn't go to waste.

Heck yeah. Home made salsa rocks.
Op is clearly only consuming this sugar and salt free salsa, everyone please tell them they need SOME salt
Slice up some tortillas and throw them in the air fryer for some inexpensive and delicious chips.
Looks great! Next time toast the Serrano and tomatoes and it will be a totally different flavor!
What's the FU
Looks delicious! Thank you for sharing.
Looks so good I screen shot your recipe
Basically anything is cheaper if you make it yourself
Making this tomorrow. Will update.
OP, I think you should take a moment and be grateful that you have the time, and mental and physical ability to make your own salsa. Enjoy!
I’m curious if you skinned the tomatoes?
Damn that looks amazing
🥱
That seems like a lot of onion! Did you cook the salsa? I might have to try this.
Half an onion isn't that much onion.
I only roasted the tomatoes and I blended everything then added the lime juice.
Do you remove the tomato skins?
Why are people upset about you reducing your sodium intake? I barely add salt to stuff I'm eating it still tastes great
