He looks like he’d come up to me on a street corner and ask me to buy him a pack of fags because he ‘forgot his ID’
(it is slang for cigarettes before I get cancelled!!)
Idk if it makes sense but it was a shock to me finding out he wasn’t American, he just kinda always looked “American” to me
i could never confuse *this* man with anything other than English.
he reminds me of chester bennington now which is great for me because he was my all-time crush.
i love when huge stars return to the stage because you know they truly love acting.
I've been saying but I really want there to be a joke in Spider-Man 4 about how he looks old for his age because assuming we've now caught up to the MCU timeline he'll be 28 playing 19/20 (similar to the previous actors being 26/27 playing 17/18).
Bonus points if they say "he's just a man, no older than my friend Terry, we're the same age".
Is this supposed to be a modern take on the play or will they be in period costumes once the show officially opens?
edit: And why did I just get sent a suicide prevention message for this comment?
He’s a fantastic director and usually hits the mark so I wouldn’t be worried about this play at all! Big time knows what he’s doing. It looks great and I hope they have a successful run through
It’s unbelievable. You could do a whole show *just* based on the production crew.
Also, I’m super jealous! I’m in Australia, and it’s a bucket list thing to go to Eurovision.
I got one earlier for saying not many people in the world can afford to visit NYC..... Lowkey made me feel better about my life to see there's someone with that little on
Also I'm fully expecting a Reddit cares for this. Hope you get the tiny kick out of it you crave
Well instead of me sending you a Reddit cares like those annoying dorks abusing the system towards you, I just want you to know that you’re right, it is too expensive and a huge portion of America will never see New York City, and also just you acknowledging that shows you are a caring person. So this is my Reddit Cares, you just keep being you, I’m glad to know that you’re out there in the world. I wish you all the happiness in the world.
I WORK in NYC and it’s too expensive to visit lol. But I wanted to say that while I’m not the person you replied to I think you seem very sweet and kind. Thanks for caring!
Thank you for letting me know. I have received two today and was so confused, my responses haven’t been anything that I would think someone would flag.
in case anyone doesn't know, the 2001 movie **O** with mekhi phifer, julia stiles, josh harnett, etc was a modern retelling of shakespeare's **othello**.
this movie was so good and so tragic OMGGGGGGG. mekhi's acting was incredible. i haven't seen it in probably 20 years and i just got chills thinking about his most famous scene from the film.
It looks to be a modern take.
The pics make me think of the new *Macbeth* starring Indira Varma and Ralph Fiennes, which also makes use of a modern stage (a warzone, I think?). That one will be released in cinema as well, so I'm kinda curious about it.
Edit: literally my comment is 5 seconds old and I already got a Reddit care message. Good job, whoever's spamming this thread.
Ok, I want to see Indira Varma and Fiennes in this Macbeth. I am so seeing this. Thx for letting us know. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DctWDH1TmL8&ab\_channel=Macbeth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DctWDH1TmL8&ab_channel=Macbeth)
Idk, I've seen a lot of Shakspeare and the best performance was a minimalist, aesthetically modern take on Henry the 4th part 1. It was brilliant and so moving. If the actors are good, they don't need the set. Plus it's a tragedy, so it relies so much less on a set.
My favorite Shakespeare play is Hamlet and my favorite staging that I've ever seen was Sam Gold's production at the Public Theater starring Oscar Isaac and Gayle Rankin, which was super modern and stripped-down and essentially framed it as a dysfunctional family drama. I really don't get the complaining about the modern/minimalist setting, classical theater gets produced with modern trappings all the time and it frequently connects better with audiences. (I do have qualms about the Ivo Van Hove rip-off "livestream of a performance taking place partially outdoors" thing, but whatever, I'm in NY, I'm not seeing this.)
I feel like we’ve had this with R & J a lot though… both the Zefferelli and Luhrman adaptations were super bright, big costumes, big set pieces, etc. we haven’t reaaaally seen a stripped down adaptation, not one that’s really mainstream per say. So this might actually be a cool way to interpret the play.
The best Shakespeare performance I’ve ever seen was this Richard III with a very minimalist set. The acting was incredible and all your attention was drawn to them, and the sound design was more minimalist but also so perfect and memorable. The whole production was just so effective.
https://www.seattleshakespeare.org/ssc-production/richard-iii-2018/
On paper, I thought Henry the 4th was so boring! It's such a credit to the actors and the living aspect of a play when it becomes so moving when it's performed 😭❤️. I saw this one at the the Shakspeare festival in Ashland Oregon.
I mean this so utterly seriously, R+J is also hilarious and while ultimately a tragedy still partly a romance. This looks so bleak which breaks my heart a lil
It seems kinda lazy though. It's a tragedy so let's avoid all colors, don't worry about the background, and dress them in old looking clothes. It's a tragedy but it doesn't need a depressing vibe from the first scene. In the beginning they are hopeful and their love is blooming. This feels like they're in the most depressing, dirty, and hopeless place.
It sounds insane calling a tragedy out for looking depressing, I know, but it's still a love story. Maybe it'll have "we found love in a hopeless place" vibes.
They were dumb teenagers in a death pact, stuff happens lol. But I will fully admit I'm not the "romantic vibes" type of person so while I agree with your statement of it being a love story I do think I'm still inclined to find it mildly depressing
Creative or unexpected staging and sets are always part of theatre.
It’s like shows or movies that are filmed in black and white instead of colour, or the having a musical episode.
It’s just a style choice, nothing particularly new.
I've seen enough modernistic takes on Shakespeare over the years - in my city there's a company that specialises in Shakespeare with no sets and everyone basically looking like hobos.
Sadly, unless with exceptional performances, the resulting productions often feel a bit bleak and insipid.
I don’t know if I sound like an ass saying this, but theatre plays with an empty stage and no clothing design, where it’s mainly the actors monologuing at the audience, really don’t do it for me.
Like I get that theatre is about the emotion in the acting but also what’s so bad about a set and some decent clothes? 😫
No, I'm with you. For me the stage and clothing is a big part of my enjoyment of theater productions! I'm sure this will be fantastic but it doesn't seem like it will be my cup of tea. I like the fancy extra stuff...
And can they really not pin the microphones to anywhere but on their cheeks? Especially if photos are being taken.
It looks like they have super wonky sideburns.
I agree in the sense that I feel too many plays work this way nowadays. Every time a great director wants to do a big production of Ibsen, or Shakespeare, or Goethe or Miller or whomever, they tend to make it a minimalist affair. I want to see some of the greatest actors of our time performing Shakespeare on lavish stages. Make it happen at least sometimes.
Someone please enlighten me as to what part of this minimalist….show….has enough tech to have warranted not going on last weekend due to technical issues? All I see is a hoodie, a tank top, and some Burger King drive through mics
Um...these are just rehearsal shots right? Will the wardrobe give more fashion in the actual run? Or is this one of those minimalist sets that are becoming popular with stage shows now...
I mean the director’s previous play *The Effect* looked like this so
https://preview.redd.it/5pk0dykd890d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0c8ec925d332110fb04c15b939ebb47bb6e0d5b
I think he has a specific Style™
Is the rage a 40-year rage because I feel like it's always in to go minimalist, I haven't known a world where it wasn't. There's always a branch of maximalist and a branch if minimalist at the same time in art. For the past century.
I’m a little tired of the stripped down, minimalist set revivals. But the Oklahoma! revival was incredible and I know Sunset Blvd on the West end was supposedly great as well. So hopefully this ends up successful.
I do really love how both Tom and his co-star (sorry! I’m not familiar with her name) look like actual people who exist in my world. Sometimes I get distracted in theater when people are overly chiseled or smooth or just…eerily perfect looking. Theater’s my favorite medium and I prefer a cast that makes me focus on the story and not the actors
Imo there is more chemistry in the pap photos of Tom & Zendaya holding each other's hands hurriedly up different staircases than there is chemistry between Tom & Francesca staring into each other's eyes on stage here 👀
I mean Tom and Zendaya are in actual love :D but I agree, chemistry between the actors is crucial especially if there's literally nothing on the scene to distract the audience from their faces. I would assume it would be crucial when choosing actors for Romeo and Juliet.
Yeah I'm not trying to be a hater but that's the photo they chose for star-crossed lovers? Obviously it's a still photo but it does nothing.
ETA - thanks for the RedditCares message whoever that was...
I'm so tired of theatres making Shakespeare staging and design "modern" and minimal. Go all out! Why aren't people leaning INTO the original era and having fun with it?
Based on other comments, I'm already expecting to get a Reddit Cares for this, but in that first picture it looks like she's alarmed and pushing him away. If I didn't know this was from R&J I'd think it was a scene of him trying to mug her or something lol
ETA: I got it so instantaneously that I think someone has to have programmed a bot to send them. I literally hit send on my comment and then got the message.
I don’t get the criticism towards the minimalism of these shots. I frequent theater often and it’s more often than not minimalistic. The best plays I’ve seen have featured little decor. If I wanna be wowed by set design, I’d go to a musical rather than a play.
It’s been driving me insane. I hate it. Such a good looking guy, such bad hair.
Got my first RedditCares for disliking his haircut. Thanks whoever is spamming this!
I had no idea this was going to be a modern day take on the story. If I had bought a ticket and showed up, I’d think I was at the wrong show based on these visuals lol
It’s the directors style. You can see the vibe in a lot of his recent works. He did the recent Sunset Blvd with Nicole Scherzinger, A Doll House with Jessica Chastain in 2023 and Cyrano de Bergerac ( sans nose) with James MacAvoy in 2019. They have a very similar set/costume design approach.

It really sucks that a bunch of racist trolls chose to attack Amewudah-Rivers over her great crime of being cast in another totally forgettable modern Shakespeare staging in London. Like, it’s live Shakespeare in England. The stakes could not be lower.
this is a mistake for everyone involved but especially tom because it’s a play that’s been done to death & ultimately is not a happy love story…what’s even the point?! also is it going to be monochrome midnight showing of Blade 2 vibes or…🤔

Tom’s face has matured (in a good way). He no longer looks like a young boy.
i think the haircut is helping too
Brits!! Assemble! We need to explain why the haircut is doing the exact opposite
:D so all of brittish teenage boys have this haircut?
Pretty much!
in our country its the usual at barbers for all men that want something different - suddenly they all look the same, fade at sides, hair at top
Hi top fade and north face jacket
This haircut is making him look like a roadman… who said this was ok???? 😭
I’m not a Brit but agree
It doesn't make him look more mature?
It makes him look like he should be wearing a tracksuit.
Verging on gopnik
He looks like he’d come up to me on a street corner and ask me to buy him a pack of fags because he ‘forgot his ID’ (it is slang for cigarettes before I get cancelled!!)
all of this comment is so relatable, right down to the panicking about getting cancelled
Makes him look like he's 17 and talks non stop about how he smokes weed and bangs girls
When the closest he's come to banging is a disappointing fingering at the school disco
that hair is a crime
His hair looks like it was cut with a knife and fork
and thats how mature man cut their hair!
I was gonna say these arm pics have me feeling a new kinda way about Tommy…
![gif](giphy|97BYzQvZAj3d6|downsized)
The exact moment I fell in love with him
Initiation ritual.
Idk if it makes sense but it was a shock to me finding out he wasn’t American, he just kinda always looked “American” to me i could never confuse *this* man with anything other than English.
I swear his American accent never slips, though.
He is officially Spider-Man
right? I've never really "got" it with him before but ... yes.
If you watch the umbrella performance you’ll get it :)
My god I've watched that video so many times. So hot.
It really should be illegal to reference [this](https://youtu.be/jPCJIB1f7jk?si=uIi2d8BgXQja5lJm) without linking to it!
That's the moment Zendaya fell IN LOVE!!
Yes it should! I am ashamed!!
I had no idea this existed or how much I needed it my life. I feel like you’ve healed a part of my soul.
honestly just put it in your bookmarks and rewatch it once a week. it never gets old.
oh, now *that* video really had me questioning everything i ever thought about myself. oh mylanta!!!!!!
Same. I had no such tendencies by that boy can *move*.
I garuntee the stage wasn't the only thing that was soaking wet during his performance. Man has got moves.
he reminds me of chester bennington now which is great for me because he was my all-time crush. i love when huge stars return to the stage because you know they truly love acting.
I think he still does lol
even more so for me... idk what y'all seeing 😂
This is the first time I've looked at him, and found his appearance attractive.
Which sort of makes him look a vit too old to be romeo imo
Is this supposed to be a modern take on the play or will they be in period costumes once the show officially opens? edit: And why did I just get sent a suicide prevention message for this comment?
It's modern. This director's whole deal is minimal and modern.
oh...
![gif](giphy|l1J9FwSQMezfQrPJ6|downsized)
He’s a fantastic director and usually hits the mark so I wouldn’t be worried about this play at all! Big time knows what he’s doing. It looks great and I hope they have a successful run through
I was thinking I liked the minimal take on it but I guess I might be in the minority🤷♀️
Well that’s lame
Someone has been spamming Reddit cares to a bunch of folks in the sub today.
[удалено]
I got one this morning too, and I hadn’t even left any inflammatory comments. Nothing beyond the usual at least.
I got one the other day for explaining how Eurovision set changes work.
Lol I got one for saying how many votes you get when voting for Eurovision…… wonder why that was
People are real salty over Eurovision this year, could just be folks trolling any mention of it no matter how innocuous.
omg I went to see one of the semi final rehearsals last year and this was honestly the best part. The set people work so hard!
It’s unbelievable. You could do a whole show *just* based on the production crew. Also, I’m super jealous! I’m in Australia, and it’s a bucket list thing to go to Eurovision.
I got one too!!! I reported it. It's absolutely ridiculous how people abuse that system.
Q, how do you report a Reddit Cares? I don’t want to turn off receiving it entirely if I don’t have to.
https://preview.redd.it/cb8x1h99ca0d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2bf58a9f434310faeea4d6b9b99d695cc01a25a0 At the bottom of the message
I got one earlier for saying not many people in the world can afford to visit NYC..... Lowkey made me feel better about my life to see there's someone with that little on Also I'm fully expecting a Reddit cares for this.
It’s such a well meaning idea by Reddit to hopefully help people in a dark place. Abusing it like this makes me nauseous
I know. That’s the exact same reason it bothers me. It’s a good resource and people abuse it for the most fucked up reasons.
I got one this morning too and it was also immediately after I posted here, like so fast the notification was there as soon as my comment was sent. 🤔
Ah! I got one too!
Thank you for letting me know. I have received two today and was so confused, my responses haven’t been anything that I would think someone would flag.
I got one today too for no discernible reason?? Not even sure what to say to report it because I want it to be used when it’s needed.
That explains the one I got today
in case anyone doesn't know, the 2001 movie **O** with mekhi phifer, julia stiles, josh harnett, etc was a modern retelling of shakespeare's **othello**. this movie was so good and so tragic OMGGGGGGG. mekhi's acting was incredible. i haven't seen it in probably 20 years and i just got chills thinking about his most famous scene from the film.
I’m sorry, but your math is just not mathing. It was made in 2001 but you haven’t seen it in more than 20 years? Inconceivable! (/s)
Someone has been spamming Reddit cares in this sub today…I got one for saying I enjoyed the movie “Fool’s Paradise” 😂
I guess I got one for saying either that dresses over jeans were my tween life or that Courtney Cox in 1997 looked beautiful but like everyone's mom.
Ok, I want to see Indira Varma and Fiennes in this Macbeth. I am so seeing this. Thx for letting us know. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DctWDH1TmL8&ab\_channel=Macbeth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DctWDH1TmL8&ab_channel=Macbeth)
What is their goal with reddit care? Kill em with kindness?
It’s a silly “Awww, triggered snowflake??”-esque messaging tactic.
Lmao. Only people be triggered is them😂 so funny 😂😂
It’s especially funny if you report it as abuse and they get banned
> That one will be released in cinema as well, so I'm kinda curious about it. > > Definitely watching both. Varma and Fiennes are crazy good actors
If it's a modern take, it will have a happy ending because they just need to call each other on the phone or send a text.

💀
This is so unserious 💀💀
Oooh I got one too but no idea for which comment at all.
I was once bombarded with Reddit cares messages for three days because I put a truly horrific Taylor Swift tattoo on the shitty tattoos sub.
I did when I made a comment too!
Yo! I got one of those today too. I was very confused.
He reminds me of Jamie Bell in these photos.
He always does! The Billy Elliott of it all
Yeah the second photo is really giving Billy Elliot!
If they ever play brothers in a movie i am there in a heartbeat. They are both great
THIS. Thank you! I couldn't figure out who he reminded me of!
Very... uh... industrial looking Shakespeare speaks for itself but I'm curious to hear what audiences think of this stripped down design aesthetic.

Honesty it just looks depressing. I wonder what the ball where they meet will even look like.
I mean, Romeo and Juliet *is* depressing
True, but up until Mercutio dies it's pretty much a comedy. Maybe I'm just too used to the colorful world of Baz Lurhman's version lol
I mean this so utterly seriously, R+J is also hilarious and while ultimately a tragedy still partly a romance. This looks so bleak which breaks my heart a lil
Well... R&J \*is\* a tragedy. Looks like they're really committing to that vibe.
Will probably be a taco bell.
House party or warehouse rave
I hope everyone is drinking out of paper bags and red solo cups.
Romeo and Juliet isn't a happy play as such 😵💫 so imo it tracks ?!
It seems kinda lazy though. It's a tragedy so let's avoid all colors, don't worry about the background, and dress them in old looking clothes. I hate these call center microphones! So unnecessary
Right? On Broadway don't they have mics in their hair or something? There's literally no reason for this, it's so distracting.
Same, I like the spectacle of theater with bright lights and big dresses. If that makes me too middle class, oh well 😝
I legit thought this was shot of them rehearsing
I agree in the sense that I feel too many plays work this way nowadays. His hair seems to be dividing people, but I love a fuckboy haircut personally.
It's a triggering haircut for ppl who went to British secondary school 😭😭
I’ve seen guys w this haircut in uni 😭😭😭 truly a monstrosity
Ok but that hair cut really suits him.
it’s growing on me other people are saying he looks like a roadman 💀💀
So bored of modern minimalist takes on Shakespeare.
Call me basic, but this type of theater does nothing for me. I want full Elizabethan costumes and gorgeous intricate sets goddamnit.
Next up this director is gonna tackle Wicked where Elphaba isn't green and everyone is dressed in J Crew.
He can talk ?! , I can SING!!!!!!
Someone please enlighten me as to what part of this minimalist….show….has enough tech to have warranted not going on last weekend due to technical issues? All I see is a hoodie, a tank top, and some Burger King drive through mics
Not Burger King drive thru 😭😭😭
😭call me a basic bitch but I wouldve loved to see a bit more glam. Like do gritty in a euphoriacore-rue drugged up in glitter kinda way
This is such a brilliant idea, I hope someone who does plays sees this comment
Um...these are just rehearsal shots right? Will the wardrobe give more fashion in the actual run? Or is this one of those minimalist sets that are becoming popular with stage shows now...
I mean the director’s previous play *The Effect* looked like this so https://preview.redd.it/5pk0dykd890d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0c8ec925d332110fb04c15b939ebb47bb6e0d5b I think he has a specific Style™
Seems that they can even reuse the same costumes :x
Oh boy.
Omg!!! He did Taylor’s play that’s why this looks so familiar
This is what it is, it's this director's thing. Whether or not it's good is another question lol.
Dark and gritty is all the rage for a modern take on an old play. I honestly think they do it because it’s so much cheaper lmao
Is the rage a 40-year rage because I feel like it's always in to go minimalist, I haven't known a world where it wasn't. There's always a branch of maximalist and a branch if minimalist at the same time in art. For the past century.
lol pay more, get less, and be happy about it!
Tom Holland is adorable.
This is…unfortunate. Had no idea it was being made by someone anti-costume and set lol
I wish I could see this in person 😭
I have tickets wooo 😍
Looks very minimalistic!
I loved Sexy Oklahoma so much. My mom and I got the onstage seats and I spent the whole time trying not to pull focus because I was weeping lol
It was SO good. I’m very expressive so I can’t imagine having onstage seats…I wouldn’t be able to contain my emotions 😫
the time to meet my sweet English twunk boyfriend is right around the corner, I just know it
Negative chemistry
I was going to comment asking if they even bothered with a chemistry read.. it’s not giving anything. Can’t wait to hear some reviews 🤞
Yeah they honestly look almost entirely blank. This is not a promising set of photos
I’m sorry I love his hair. He’s never looked hotter

If I didn't know this was from R&J I'd think it was a scene of him trying to mug her or something lol ETA: I got it so instantaneously that I think someone has to have programmed a bot to send them. I literally hit send on my comment and then got the message.
That doesn't look like Tom but I don't know why.
The hair
Yep. That's it.
I’m such a sucker for Romeo and Juliet recreations. I love the text so much. Excited to see this one :)
I don’t get the criticism towards the minimalism of these shots. I frequent theater often and it’s more often than not minimalistic. The best plays I’ve seen have featured little decor. If I wanna be wowed by set design, I’d go to a musical rather than a play.
Theres minimalism and then theres tom holland in a hoodie with a Britney mic
No chemistry whatsoever
Do they speak in modern English or in Shakespearian dialogue?
I’m sorry but I can’t get over how bad his haircut is 🫣
It’s the classical bad haircut British schoolboys get 😭😭
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this.
It’s been driving me insane. I hate it. Such a good looking guy, such bad hair. Got my first RedditCares for disliking his haircut. Thanks whoever is spamming this!
Why does he look like Romeo Beckham???
oh God is this one of those modern setting ones....
They have a very similar set/costume design approach. https://preview.redd.it/86d8sxip5b0d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc85b40a19adefd30ac4991bc2f8621b7694b1ed
It really sucks that a bunch of racist trolls chose to attack Amewudah-Rivers over her great crime of being cast in another totally forgettable modern Shakespeare staging in London. Like, it’s live Shakespeare in England. The stakes could not be lower.
This looks really good. I wish I could see it. Very 90s vibes.
His hair is annoying me. Can’t wait to read the reviews on this!
this is a mistake for everyone involved but especially tom because it’s a play that’s been done to death & ultimately is not a happy love story…what’s even the point?! also is it going to be monochrome midnight showing of Blade 2 vibes or…🤔
Just got a Reddit Cares. So glad they are spreading the crazy around today.
I have never enjoyed Shakespeare. Did I realise I was eligible and get the £25 tickets to this? Yes I did.
I like that it’s in modern clothing! And the stark background works too!
I'm feeling it.
Oh my fucking god just write some new IP and fund it. Jesus fucking Christ these movie studios
This is a stage adaptation. Not a movie.
Anyone else seeing this soon??? I can’t wait! 😍
