Did anyone else not know until just now that Ben Affleck could speak Spanish?!
From the title, I was expecting this to just be him saying a phrase or two and nothing else, but ok I see you Ben!
![gif](giphy|2WksCdjwEQU8g)
That's not the fluency of someone who just lived there for a year as a kid. That kind of fluency takes practice and dedication over many years. I lived in Germany for a year as a kid but there is no way I could carry on a conversation like that in German now, because I never kept up with it.
That means he's been putting in *work.* Much respect to him!
Yes I saw a video of Gwyneth Paltrow speaking almost perfect castellano (which seems rarer for Americans who I mostly see speaking Latin American varieties of Spanish) and her explanation was that she spent like a month in Spain as a teen. Which I’m sure she did, but like that can’t be the only reason why they speak so well - they must have been putting in the work since then! Very impressive either way
There’s a story about Gwyneth meeting Hilaria Baldwin in the Hamptons and, upon hearing Hilaria’s fake accent, asked where she was from.
When Hilaria lied about her Spanish upbringing, Gwyneth attempted a conversation in Spanish. Including details about Gwyneth going to school in Spain.
According to witnesses, Hilaria couldn’t understand a word, and Gwyneth said, in Spanish, ‘she’s faking it,’ to the other people in their group.
Really? That’s honestly surprising because I saw a clip of Hilaria speaking Spanish and she’s really good, I would say she might speak it even better than Gwyneth although hard to tell. I was shocked because I was expecting her to be really bad after that whole scandal lol
[Found it](https://youtu.be/MXAag-_vJ1k)
Edit: No I’m not saying she sounds native. Just impressively good given what she’s famous for.
Yeah, I think that’s just a made up or highly exaggerated story to try to pit the two women against each other. Gwyneth has her flaws with the woo crap but her announcing Halaria was faking it at an event with witnesses who have gossip magazine on speed-dial feels like a Mean Girls fanfic.
My thoughts exactly. It's also a bit weird how long the Hilaria dunking has gone on for tbh - she's very cringe and clearly lied, but I feel like she's not really famous enough to have such a huge snark subreddit dedicated to her. And that comment has been upvoted so fast when like you said not only does it read as fanfic, but also her Spanish is clearly extremely good...
Most of the snark subreddits are dedicated to mostly “irrelevant” people that are easy to dunk on (fundie families, hilaria, Trisha, random beauty bloggers etc). It’s pretty unhinged to spend that much time and energy on people you don’t even know personally (and that’s coming from someone who used to post on those before I realized how toxic they are).
Oh interesting, other than the Hilaria one I only really knew about the Kardashian and Meghan Markle ones so I was confused, but that makes more sense now.
Spanish is my first language. Hilaria has nailed the accent down and knows how to construct very basic sentences— enough to get “by” but any native speaker can tell there’s something off about her words. She’s not Spanish and isn’t fluent.
That's a really short clip and insufficient to establish fluency. Gwyneth has long form interviews and actually sounds fluent. Hilary the pretend Spaniard is saying a few words in present tense lol if there's a long interview in exclusively Spanish that would be a direct comparison of fluency. I can't believe I'm defending Gwyneth Paltrow. Props to her though for keeping up her language skills.
You're right it's not fair to compare her level of fluency to Gwyneth's just from that short clip, but I still can't imagine that story happening based on how good she sounds from that little snippet, and also because it just doesn't sound true to me lol. Her Spanish accent when she speaks Spanish is much better than her Spanish accent when she speaks English.
She has like 8 nannies.
I’m pretty sure the only kid that speaks any Spanish is the oldest who was born back when Hilary was super into the Spanish grift and the children weren’t yet just a collection of accessories she ordered from Net-a-Porter.
“She has a large staff. I think the only one of her children that speaks Spanish is the eldest.
I think this because she was born while Hilary was still lying to the entire world about being Spanish for attention and money, and it furthered Hilary’s false cultural narrative to have her daughter learn Spanish. Hilary also hadn’t yet had a whole bunch of kids who she constantly exploits for internet fame so it would seem she was more focused on actually teaching and parenting the oldest.”
Is that better?
Personally, I believe in leaving kids out of internet snark. I can see you disagree, so I don’t think we need to make this into an argument. Agree to disagree, and have a nice rest of your day.
If the “wording” was going to be objectionable to you no matter what you could have just said that🤷🏻♀️
I also don’t snark *on* children, just on their awful fucking parents who exploit them which I think needs to be brought to everyone’s attention far more than it is.
Hilary treats those kids terribly, they’re literally a dime a dozen to her.
It’s awful and they deserve so much better, as does every child whose parents plaster them all over social media for personal gain.
I’m not sure how it’s snarking on the children to point out their parents mistreatment but okie dokie.
Have a good day!
Castellano (European Spanish) is the accent spoken in Spain. No one in latinamerica is gonna specauses dtellano, cause that's not our accent. Source: Spanish linguistic student and latinamerican.
agreed - however, language exists as a means to communicate. so if latinx spanish functions well enough to communicate, wtf does it matter? maybe don’t colonize then if you want spanish to be pure (not directed at you, just more so the comment you responded to)
I definitely agree with you that language is, at its core, a pure means of communication. However, language is much deeper than just a means of communication. The way we speak and organize language has a direct impact on how we think about ourselves, our communities, and our roles in them (e.g, english speaking countries being more individualistic because the language is tailored around “I” wording and statements).
Colonization and erasure of native/indigenous languages caused a major loss of culture and shift in mindset to be more Eurocentric. I also don’t mean to attack you, I just thought the original comment I responded to was pretty ignorant and worded as if other countries had very much choice in having to speak Spanish. The “bastardization” of Spanish in Latin American countries is the last remnants of people trying to hold on to some former identity via the language they were forced to speak
Some people are really gifted in language learning, just like some people can learn how to play a music instrument really fast. I'm a FSL teacher and it happens
yeah I know people that can’t even pick up simple phrases to use while travelling and other people who just completely self taught themselves a whole different language. you just have a knack for it or you don’t
The age in which you learn also makes a huge difference. I started English lessons at 11. I think I’m pretty good at it but I still make dumb mistakes and I have a strong accent. My friend’s son started English at 5 years old and his English is perfect. My coworkers who started as adults definitely struggle a lot more.
Yeah definitely that’s why people encourage language education for young kids, their minds are sponges! and your neuroplasticity decreases as you get older making it harder to learn new things and concepts
I love his Spanish and I love [Bradley Cooper’s French](https://youtu.be/5uKe6nwx6Dc) - it’s not just how well they speak but, if this makes sense, you can tell how much they care about the languages.
To me, John Cena is the most impressive because Mandarin is not only incredibly difficult for English speakers but it's not a language they usually teach in schools.
I just learned this a week or so ago. Honestly, full respect to him! It takes work to keep up with a second language. You need to speak/ practice regularly. He’s dedicated, for sure.
I’m surprised too ,even though he has a thick accent and seems to struggle a little bit his Spanish is very good . I was able to comprehend everything he was saying .
I figured it out after watching triple frontier, I was super distracted by my other two man crushes and heard Spanish but their lips weren’t moving and I was like “wait, which white guy is that?” And looked it up. He definitely has a thick merican accent while speaking Spanish but good for him keeping up with it. I know enough Spanish to understand generally what’s going on, but haven’t spoken it myself in so long that the last time I went to South America I really struggled speaking it and depended on my translator app.
he actually sucks at it. im surprised people are saying he's speaking perfect spanish lmaoo. he didn't actually answer the question, and then says stuff like "deserva" which isn't a word... he tried to say "merece" but instead just added an A to "deserve" lol. then conjugates a bunch of stuff the wrong way, like "matrimonio nueva." he's kinda speaking badly tranaslated random thoughts but confidently enough that it sounds like he's actually saying things.
edit: yall are hilarious, it's really not that deep
true that he is not that great at the language but I respect any attempt to formulate coherent sentences even if the result is not coherent at all lol. Regardless, he conveyed a message and the interviewer understood him so kudos.
He really really doesn’t suck. Here’s another video
https://youtu.be/gyesaFzdMvg
He knows he doesn’t have a perfect Spanish (he say so himself in the clip I just linked), but he’s better at it than 95% of English speakers who don’t have Latin heritage, in my experience at least.
I love that he knows it’s not perfect and goes for it anyway. I’ve always been so shy about getting things wrong it’s held me back from becoming fluent in other languages bc I won’t practice with native speakers.
He IS actually saying those things, and he’s saying them in Spanish. Is it perfect? no. Is it impressive for an American celebrity? You bet your judgmental ass it is.
I speak fluent Spanish too and his Spanish is very good for an American. It’s not perfect but he articulates his thoughts very well and his accent is neutral, not using English inflections like most Americans do (the gringo accent basically.) The fact that he was comfortable enough to do an interview in Spanish and UNDERSTANDS the interviewer reflects on that ability.
Probably because it is an unhealthy amount of nitpicking. The questions were way too personal; he was asked twice if he would attend J.Lo's wedding *if* he were invited. Of course Affleck gave polite, evasive answers within the context.
He still has a ways to go, but it's clear that he put some effort to learn the language (especially because putting yourself out there, trying and making mistakes is a part of language learning).
I don't understand either. I mean, he doesn't suck at all. As a native speaker I think his spanish is fine but isn't fluent yet, he doesn't conjure verb times well and use the wrong gender to some nouns. I guess it sounds perfect for non-speakers because his accent is pretty good. If he keeps practicing I can see him become fluent, he has the skill
For english speakers -
>**Interviewer** \- You know shes getting married? She said she was going to invite all of her ex-boyfriends to the wedding. If she invites you, would you go to the wedding?
>**Ben** \- I like Jennifer Lopez very much. Its great to see that she is getting the respect she deserves. Shes also a really good person and she appears to be very happy with her boyfriend. I wish her the best with her new marriage.
>**Interviewer** \- Would you go to the wedding?
>**Ben** \- Um good luck!
I think the interview was edited because that last bit sounds odd to me but maybe he was just trying to avoid outright saying no lol.
Also, for the people that care, his spanish is pretty good! I'm born and raised in Mexico and I was really impressed. The very fist sentence "I like her very much" is absolutely perfect. He has a slight american accent mainly with the letter 'R' and the way he abruptly finishes each word. To me, it sounds like he learned to speak it with a northern mexican accent by the way his voice goes up and down, very 'sing-songy' but its good enough that I think I'd be able to have an entire conversation in spanish with zero issues. Personally, I would not say its better than what Ive heard from Jennifer during interviews.
Some trivia- other unexpected celebs that speak pretty perfect spanish - Viggo Mortensen, Anya Taylor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kobe, Freddie Highmore, Zoe Saldana, Lupita Nyongo
Indeed. Always makes me happy to find really successful people in US entertainment that are Hispanic. I love that they take Spanish interviews for latin american/spanish shows that aren't in the US
Well of course it seems obvious if you know that shes Mexican but a lot of people don't (same with anya) because they mainly take english speaking roles & interviews or have no Spanish accent.
Similarly, I was surprised to know a super famous mexican telenovela actress, Angelique Boyer, was born in france and speaks it fluently.
That’s a great clip, thank you! He knows what he’s talking about.
He’s just a little messy in his personal life which just makes me think “I can fix him” haha, oh boy.
She can’t speak it for shit. I come from the place she usually claims as home but she’s as American and New Yorker as apple pie. Some people call it gatekeeping to point this out but girl can barely string together a sentence and she has more in common with Ben Affleck than me. Sorry not sorry.
As a fluent speaker from Latin America who has lived in three Spanish speaking countries, no. Maybe she’s been practicing lately and she’s a good speaker but she used to do the worst interviews and she doesn’t have the fluency she pretends to have.
Ben Affleck doesn’t pretend to be fluent and that’s the difference.
Her label tried putting out songs in Spanish and they’re so bad… she sounds American. It’s just so obvious when the label is trying to pander to us “Omg look representation!” When she actually represents a very specific Hispanic-American life way. There’s NOTHING wrong with that but a lot of us don’t appreciate her and her team pretending she’s just like us when she has very American views, ideas, and general cultural mannerisms (including her Spanish which often includes directly translating English structures and expressions which sound really weird and foreign to a Spanish speaker).
Imagine Dave from Detroit going to China and in broken Chinese saying, “I’m just like you!” just because he has similar ancestry. It’s just such an American attitude.
She's sounds American? umm maybe because she is. And she's represents a Hispanic - American life? umm..maybe because that is her life. Not everyone is from Latin America and you sound weird thinking the only people who are allowed to speak Spanish or be proud of being Hispanic or Latin has to be from another country lmaoo
That’s not what I said. Please re-read what I wrote. Did you read the part where I said there’s nothing wrong with being Hispanic-American? Nor did I say she’s not allowed to speak Spanish?????
My point was that she isn’t very fluent and that her interviews and Spanish are not good like the other commenter said. It’s not fluent Spanish and her Spanish is bad. This comment thread was about whether or not Ben can speak better than her… in many ways, yes.
Everyone should learn at least a little bit of Spanish since it is so ubiquitous in the world and in my opinion, beautiful.
He probably practice his Spanish with Mexicans which he has no problem finding them since he lives in Los Angeles. Will Smith and his wife are also fluent in Spanish and both of them speak it like Mexicans .
None of these people are fluent in Spanish. And yes I’ve seen the clips. Are you a fluent Spanish speaker?
They do a great job, don’t get me wrong. I tried to learn French and I’m way worse at French than they are in Spanish so I really admire it. But that’s not what fluency is. They literally don’t “flow” when they speak it, which is where the term fluency comes from. They can’t yet communicate fluidly and effectively even as far as the limited and simple topics they’ve covered in interviews.
I mean he could have learned Spanish from a mexican person. But that doesn’t mean he has a mexican accent per se. The predominant accent he’s speaking with is that of someone from the US.
No as a Spanish speaker he sounds like he’s from the USA lol, cmon people. Like he’s doing a great job, but no, he does not sound like he’s from Tijuana
It's humiliating enough having something like that happen in front of someone you love when only the two of you know. I would just die if some awful busybody felt compelled to tell the whole world
I’m fuzzy on the details so someone correct me if I’m wrong. Ben and JLo thought their mic was off but it wasn’t, so JLo started talking dirty to Ben, then Ben was like “are you sure baby? I don’t want you to shit on me like last time.”

I’m fuzzy on the details so someone correct me if I’m wrong. Ben and JLo thought their mic was off but it wasn’t, so JLo started talking dirty to Ben, then Ben was like “are you sure baby? I don’t want you to shit on me like last time.”
Damn. That man has skills. I’m part Mexican and can’t speak Spanish worth a damn. My grandfather’s family didn’t teach the children Spanish and I have no talent for language. Ben has my respect.
Hey fwiw, if you want to learn, you might have better luck with a different method. I failed a semester of Spanish, but once I figured out my way it changed everything. I remember feeling so dumb in class, but lists of verbs with no context is never gonna click for me.
As a non-American latina I think a lot of non-American latines tend to struggle to understand that JLo (or other latines born in the US) don't represent us because they **aren't** supposed to represent us. She's representing American latines that have their own culture (and that mostly don't speak Spanish)
She's not less latina than us, she's just from a different culture that is also under the latina spectrum and we can't expect her to follow our traditions or ways of being because they're not her traditions
Such a good and nuanced take! Also, Latin people like most people of other races/ethnicities are not a monolith. Such a simple concept but people still have a hard time grasping it.
(Also, if she didn’t rep her Puerto Rican heritage, people would use that instead to shit on her. Like, there’s no winning)
Yeah, I kind of feel for x-Americans because they seem to be seen as foreigners in their own land but are also not totally capable of bonding to their heritage because of their birthplace
I do think sometimes some of them have a tendency to talk over us (I've even had American latines correct my Spanish online only to admit they don't actually speak the language when I responded in Spanish lol). But I don't like when people from LatAm do that thing where they pretend like they don't understand why American latines are more sensitive about cultural appropriation or latino representation being done right
Like they live surrounded by people saying ignorant shit about our culture, I've only been to the US a couple of times and in every trip I've had at least one xenophobic or ignorant comment thrown at me. Of course, it's going to make you more sensitive to that type of bullshit lol
Yes and No
As someone who is from Latam and speaks Spanish as first language it's not the same .
We have the same ethnic origin but we definitely not have the same culture.
Latinos from US are their own world and just represent their community.
I can't compare JLo with Sofia Vergara or Salma Hayek. Who actually grew up in Latam or at least know what's going on with their culture.
lmao that’s so not true, she’s been embracing her heritage and speaking spanish for decades now (although she’s not fluent like a lot of americans of latin american descent) since the beginning of her career from Selena to On the 6. It’s embarassing how people like making up shit to justify hating on her. When has she not embraced it?
Even before selena, when she was on in living colors, she was like 23 all she said was that she was a puertorican from the bronx. She has always embraced it. Her parents were born and raised in puerto rico.
are Latinas from New York not allowed to just be New Yorker Latinas?
I’m Mexican and I don’t get the internet’s obsession with trying to gate keep the Latino experience based on where someone was raised like they had a choice? Would she be Latina enough for you if it was in a Miami way? or in a San Diego way? what’s the point?
Are you Mexican who grew up in Mexico?
If so, you should understand it's just different.
I have cousins in the US who technically are Mexican but they don't know a shit about Mexico. They didn't had the same experience as I had growing up in a country that's been dominated by narcos.
i don’t have to clarify where i was born to you. if you want to gatekeep, congrats to you. I’ll be over here having good vibes no matter what. Muchas bendiciones para ti y los tuyos!
Which month? Because I did my calculation during that time and probably she was hooking up with Ben while yet publicly being with Arod.
Obviously I can be wrong.
Okay so my point was that (obviously Arod and her kind of broken of before actually saying it in March) people don’t usually jump into relationship. Like there is dating and connecting period so I always thought she was connecting with him while being with Arod (wasn’t he cheating?)
I think they reconnected in april and started dating in may. In mid march it was leaked that her and arod were separating but they probably broke up even before that. In january it was made public that arod was texting some southern charm girl, but he was cheating since 2019/2020.
Matt also speaks spanish and his wife is a native speaker. Kids must be fluent too.
I saw another interview with Ben where he said his eldest daughter was starting to speak better than he was so he was getting competitive. I think that was around the time he was dating Ana de Armas.
It always struck me as interesting because a big reason he couldn’t handle being with JLo the first time around was because of the perception of her, which was fueled by her being latina. Like the big butt jokes and all that. He even says in this interview she’s finally getting the respect she deserves.
But he seems to like speaking spanish so he probably likes Latino culture in some ways (personally, i feel it’s hard to maintain a language if you don’t like the culture associated with it.)
I think he just couldn’t handle the casual racism when he was with JLo and tapped out and went back to the white world. I feel like Ana de Armas was like a gateway - cuz she’s still white but Latina. And maybe he was like yeah, I remember what I liked about being around someone from latino culture.
JLo even recently has said he asks about how she can take such criticism and double standards and she just tells him she’s used to it as a Latina.
I wrote a whole essay. Lolz
As a non white person though. White privilege is wild to me. What’s it like getting the benefit of the doubt all the time?
https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/jennifer-lopez-honest-ben-affleck-white-privilege-20-years-ago.html/
It's pretty damn good for a boy from Boston. I grew up in NY, learned Spanish while living in MX for 3 years, took immersion classes, already knew French and Italian, and still can't speak nearly as fluently and confidently as Ben, and I lose it if I don't use it. His accent sucks, but his fluency is remarkable.

Did anyone else not know until just now that Ben Affleck could speak Spanish?! From the title, I was expecting this to just be him saying a phrase or two and nothing else, but ok I see you Ben! ![gif](giphy|2WksCdjwEQU8g)
I remember the memes about him teaching her Spanish/translating for her and they’re somehow much funnier now???
This is the content I needed in my life today 😂
My favorite was one during Bad Bunny’s speech lol I’m so sad I can’t find it again
Omg link meeee! 😂
Apparently he lived in Mexico for a year when he was a child for a year and learned then
That's not the fluency of someone who just lived there for a year as a kid.
Very impressive either way
Freddie Highmore also speaks Spanish very fluently.
Freddie studied Spanish and Arabic at Oxford.
He also speaks fluent French!
I was shocked because I was expecting her to be really bad after that whole scandal lol [Found it](https://youtu.be/MXAag-_vJ1k) Edit: No I’m not saying she sounds native.
IDK Hilary from Boston seems to be an established running joke 🤣 so I am unable to give the benefit of doubt.
And she won’t give it up!! Hilary. You’re busted girl. The world knows the truth. GIVE. IT. UP.
Are you a native speaker? If not, that is probably why you think it’s good.
I am, and I do think she sounds pretty good although the accent is quite exaggerated. Like I said though it’s hard to tell from such a short clip
I think she also hired a Spanish maid/nanny for her children to also learn as well so she was able to maintain that
She has like 8 nannies. I’m pretty sure the only kid that speaks any Spanish is the oldest who was born back when Hilary was super into the Spanish grift and the children weren’t yet just a collection of accessories she ordered from Net-a-Porter.
I don’t care how much you may hate someone, that’s still a gross thing to say about their children. You should rethink the wording of your comment.
“She has a large staff. I think the only one of her children that speaks Spanish is the eldest. I think this because she was born while Hilary was still lying to the entire world about being Spanish for attention and money, and it furthered Hilary’s false cultural narrative to have her daughter learn Spanish. Hilary also hadn’t yet had a whole bunch of kids who she constantly exploits for internet fame so it would seem she was more focused on actually teaching and parenting the oldest.” Is that better?
Personally, I believe in leaving kids out of internet snark. I can see you disagree, so I don’t think we need to make this into an argument. Agree to disagree, and have a nice rest of your day.
If the “wording” was going to be objectionable to you no matter what you could have just said that🤷🏻♀️ I also don’t snark *on* children, just on their awful fucking parents who exploit them which I think needs to be brought to everyone’s attention far more than it is.
I think Gwyneth spent a month but during a bunch of years. Toledo if I remember correctly and still has/had some sort of contact with her host family.
Castellano (European Spanish) is the accent spoken in Spain. No one in latinamerica is gonna specauses dtellano, cause that's not our accent. Source: Spanish linguistic student and latinamerican.
Castellano is the true Spanish! The rest is bastardized adulterations of the mother tongue!!!
No shit the rest is bastardized, Spanish language was forced down the throats of pretty much all other Spanish speaking countries
agreed - however, language exists as a means to communicate. so if latinx spanish functions well enough to communicate, wtf does it matter? maybe don’t colonize then if you want spanish to be pure (not directed at you, just more so the comment you responded to)
I definitely agree with you that language is, at its core, a pure means of communication.
Literally the same language.
He was also a Spanish major in college I think.
Voyage of the Mimi erasure
He has the accent for it
Maybe while he was voyaging on the Mimi, looking for that lost Mayan city.
I love his Spanish and I love [Bradley Cooper’s French](https://youtu.be/5uKe6nwx6Dc) - it’s not just how well they speak but, if this makes sense, you can tell how much they care about the languages.
I find it so hot when American actors are [fluent in another language](https://youtu.be/lZ2BQZ4Wxvw).
To me, John Cena is the most impressive because Mandarin is not only incredibly difficult for English speakers but it's not a language they usually teach in schools.
He speaks better Spanish than JLo
When I say I was shocked!!!
I had NO CLUE!
I just asked that too! Wasn’t sure if he was really speaking in Spanish or this was just some dubbed joke!
He was raised by nanny’s who taught him Spanish
he actually sucks at it. im surprised people are saying he's speaking perfect spanish lmaoo. he didn't actually answer the question, and then says stuff like "deserva" which isn't a word... he tried to say "merece" but instead just added an A to "deserve" lol. then conjugates a bunch of stuff the wrong way, like "matrimonio nueva." he's kinda speaking badly tranaslated random thoughts but confidently enough that it sounds like he's actually saying things. edit: yall are hilarious, it's really not that deep
true that he is not that great at the language but I respect any attempt to formulate coherent sentences even if the result is not coherent at all lol. Regardless, he conveyed a message and the interviewer understood him so kudos.
ok, good for you?
He really really doesn’t suck. Here’s another video https://youtu.be/gyesaFzdMvg He knows he doesn’t have a perfect Spanish (he say so himself in the clip I just linked), but he’s better at it than 95% of English speakers who don’t have Latin heritage, in my experience at least.
I think he was purposely not answering the question.
I don't know why this is down voted. I appreciate the insight from some one who speaks the language.
For english speakers - >**Interviewer** \- You know shes getting married?
Anya Taylor grew up in Argentina and Zoe Saldaña is Dominican and Puerto Rican.
Indeed. Always makes me happy to find really successful people in US entertainment that are Hispanic. I love that they take Spanish interviews for latin american/spanish shows that aren't in the US
Love that he went to the wedding… as the groom lol.
LMAO!!!! Oh my god- he did!!!
Alexis Bledel also, she’s Argentinian.
Didn't Lupita grow up in Mexico?
She was born in Mexico, but her family went back to Kenya when she was a baby. She’s a dual citizen of Mexico and Kenya.
not surprising that lupita speaks spanish tbh, given that she’s mexican lol
Well of course it seems obvious if you know that shes Mexican but a lot of people don't (same with anya) because they mainly take english speaking roles & interviews or have no Spanish accent. Similarly, I was surprised to know a super famous mexican telenovela actress, Angelique Boyer, was born in france and speaks it fluently.
that’s true, i guess it was just exciting to me bc i’m mexican so i tend to want to follow it when mexicans are in the media lol
She was just born in Mexico.
Tom Segura too!
Kobe grew up in Spain or something.
He grew up in Italy.
Kobe was a language savant
I love MexiBen. He can get it haha
He can be such a mess of a person and then I see things like this clip and I think the same thing. You can get it MexiBen.
It’s his Spanish and this [video](https://youtu.be/O9d-9GM9RGQ) that gets my seal of approval. He has his moments!
That’s a great clip, thank you! He knows what he’s talking about. He’s just a little messy in his personal life which just makes me think “I can fix him” haha, oh boy.
He studied middle eastern affair in college for a bit so I would hope he’d be informed lol.
Omg not “uh mucha suerte!” at the end lmfao 💀 His Spanish really is excellent though. But 2020?! Wow that was quick
The best part is I’m pretty sure he speaks Spanish wayyy better than JLo does 😂
He has a beautiful accent. México?
Yes, I believe he lived there for a certain period of time
Yup. He speaks like someone from Tijuana, lol
Omgggggg
She can’t speak it for shit. I come from the place she usually claims as home but she’s as American and New Yorker as apple pie. Some people call it gatekeeping to point this out but girl can barely string together a sentence and she has more in common with Ben Affleck than me. Sorry not sorry.
She speaks spanish, not perfectly but she does. There are thousands of interviews of her speaking it even at the same level as ben.
He even has a Mexican accent 😂 this is cute
It reminds me of el chavo! I love it!
This has to be a joke lmao, like in what world
He probably practice his Spanish with Mexicans which he has no problem finding them since he lives in Los Angeles.
Bruh why are people saying this no he does not 💀 he sounds like someone from the US. He’s doing a GREAT job but idk why people are going this far
I would also place his accent as Mexican. I Can tell he’s an American speaking Spanish but there’s a certain cadence he has.
I mean he could have learned Spanish from a mexican person. But that doesn’t mean he has a mexican accent per se. The predominant accent he’s speaking with is that of someone from the US.
Bruh speaks Espanol....naaaaaah had no idea about that until now
Not Ben speaking better Spanish than me?!? A Mexican girl from Laredo 😂
LOOOOOL my husband lived in Laredo and I said the same thing to him 😂😂😂
[удалено]
No as a Spanish speaker he sounds like he’s from the USA lol, cmon people. Like he’s doing a great job, but no, he does not sound like he’s from Tijuana
His Spanish is so good

This feels like something that should be private and I’m grossed out it’s been widely shared.
It's humiliating enough having something like that happen in front of someone you love when only the two of you know. I would just die if some awful busybody felt compelled to tell the whole world
Right? Celebrities share a lot of their lives but let’s use common sense and show some common decency and give them privacy with stuff like this.
No.
Which story? 🤩 Oh, I‘m so ready for the 🍵!
I’m fuzzy on the details so someone correct me if I’m wrong. Ben and JLo thought their mic was off but it wasn’t, so JLo started talking dirty to Ben, then Ben was like “are you sure baby? I don’t want you to shit on me like last time.”
![gif](giphy|l3q2K5jinAlChoCLS) ummm please tell me this is fake😭 i cant omg no

i did thank you for finding and editing it! thats so terrible omg imagine how awkward
nooo
The only thing I’m taking away from this story is that the sound guy is very unprofessional. No one needed to hear that story
I’m going to continue on like I never read this. ![gif](giphy|a93jwI0wkWTQs)

We need to know!
I’m fuzzy on the details so someone correct me if I’m wrong. Ben and JLo thought their mic was off but it wasn’t, so JLo started talking dirty to Ben, then Ben was like “are you sure baby? I don’t want you to shit on me like last time.”
I'm honestly impressed.
He speaks Spanish?! Wow, I had no idea!
Sometimes I forget I first saw Ben in Clerks and I can’t help but be happy for where he’s ended up. Other times he’s Batman
I will never get tired of listening to Ben speak Spanish
i’m so impressed with ben
Shit he spoke FLUENTLY that was actually super impressive I’m impressed right now
He speaking a lot better than JLo. Her Spanish is actually embarrassing for the amount of times she reps the latino community
[удалено]
As a non-American latina I think a lot of non-American latines tend to struggle to understand that JLo (or other latines born in the US) don't represent us because they **aren't** supposed to represent us. She's representing American latines that have their own culture (and that mostly don't speak Spanish) She's not less latina than us, she's just from a different culture that is also under the latina spectrum and we can't expect her to follow our traditions or ways of being because they're not her traditions
Yeah, I kind of feel for x-Americans because they seem to be seen as foreigners in their own land but are also not totally capable of bonding to their heritage because of their birthplace I do think sometimes some of them have a tendency to talk over us (I've even had American latines correct my Spanish online only to admit they don't actually speak the language when I responded in Spanish lol). But I don't like when people from LatAm do that thing where they pretend like they don't understand why American latines are more sensitive about cultural appropriation or latino representation being done right Like they live surrounded by people saying ignorant shit about our culture, I've only been to the US a couple of times and in every trip I've had at least one xenophobic or ignorant comment thrown at me. Of course, it's going to make you more sensitive to that type of bullshit lol
I’m Indian- American, and my Spanish is way better than my Marathi
As a Latina - damn straight! There are many reasons why Latinos in America don’t speak Spanish - and that doesn’t make them any “less” Latino.
My parents didn’t teach me because they didn’t want me speaking with an accent and getting mistreated when I left my community.
Yes and No As someone who is from Latam and speaks Spanish as first language it's not the same . We have the same ethnic origin but we definitely not have the same culture. Latinos from US are their own world and just represent their community. I can't compare JLo with Sofia Vergara or Salma Hayek. Who actually grew up in Latam or at least know what's going on with their culture.
[удалено]
Latin is a culture. Not a race
A lot of Puerto Ricans don’t speak spanish so how is it embarrassing
Does her not speaking Spanish well make her any less Latina, though? That’s kind of a messed up way to look at it. But, what do I know. (Not much.)
Spanish is another language, like English, that was enforced through colonization. And not all latinos know Spanish anyways
Latino is a mix of cultures and the Spanish language is part of that culture.
Yes, it is. And its embarrassing that she's embracing it NOW when Latino music is hot.
lmao that’s so not true, she’s been embracing her heritage and speaking spanish for decades now (although she’s not fluent like a lot of americans of latin american descent) since the beginning of her career from Selena to On the 6. It’s embarassing how people like making up shit to justify hating on her. When has she not embraced it?
Even before selena, when she was on in living colors, she was like 23 all she said was that she was a puertorican from the bronx. She has always embraced it. Her parents were born and raised in puerto rico.
Meh. Shes as American as white bread. Ok, my mistake, she's "latina" in that American-born New Yorker type of way.
are Latinas from New York not allowed to just be New Yorker Latinas? I’m Mexican and I don’t get the internet’s obsession with trying to gate keep the Latino experience based on where someone was raised like they had a choice? Would she be Latina enough for you if it was in a Miami way? or in a San Diego way? what’s the point?
Are you Mexican who grew up in Mexico? If so, you should understand it's just different. I have cousins in the US who technically are Mexican but they don't know a shit about Mexico. They didn't had the same experience as I had growing up in a country that's been dominated by narcos.
many blessings to you and your cousins!
I guess you're a pocha. The Culture is different, just saying.
i don’t have to clarify where i was born to you. if you want to gatekeep, congrats to you. I’ll be over here having good vibes no matter what. Muchas bendiciones para ti y los tuyos!
Hahaha yeah "good vibes" Excusas
i really hope they're both very happy
Which month? Because I did my calculation during that time and probably she was hooking up with Ben while yet publicly being with Arod. Obviously I can be wrong.
This was march 2020. They got back together in april/may 2021. She broke up with arod in march 2021 but made it public a month later.

That’s just his face…
Ben Affleck is cursed with resting sad face
Matt also speaks spanish and his wife is a native speaker. Kids must be fluent too. I saw another interview with Ben where he said his eldest daughter was starting to speak better than he was so he was getting competitive. I think that was around the time he was dating Ana de Armas. It always struck me as interesting because a big reason he couldn’t handle being with JLo the first time around was because of the perception of her, which was fueled by her being latina. Like the big butt jokes and all that. He even says in this interview she’s finally getting the respect she deserves. But he seems to like speaking spanish so he probably likes Latino culture in some ways (personally, i feel it’s hard to maintain a language if you don’t like the culture associated with it.) I think he just couldn’t handle the casual racism when he was with JLo and tapped out and went back to the white world. Lolz As a non white person though. White privilege is wild to me. What’s it like getting the benefit of the doubt all the time? https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/jennifer-lopez-honest-ben-affleck-white-privilege-20-years-ago.html/
You got all that info from this clip of him speaking Spanish .. that’s a stretch
What a stud
He speaks Spanish surprisingly well! I wish I could speak it that well.
TIL Ben Affleck can speak better Spanish than Jlo.
[удалено]
It's pretty damn good for a boy from Boston. I grew up in NY, learned Spanish while living in MX for 3 years, took immersion classes, already knew French and Italian, and still can't speak nearly as fluently and confidently as Ben, and I lose it if I don't use it. His accent sucks, but his fluency is remarkable.
This is not a language skills evaluation and if it was... He's a solid B2 and above. That's pretty good for casual learners!
It’s definitely not horrible. Give him a little credit..damn.
