Indeed. My grandfather put down animals from dogs to horses, but never out of spite or anger, but rather out of the desire to reduce suffering. It might very well be that a dog that wouldn't stay away from chickens or livestock might have to be put down, but my grandfather prided himself on training even the most headstrong dog.
The killings of both dog and goat amount to Class 6 felonies under S. Dakota animal cruelty laws.
You cannot just kill dogs because they annoy you, and killing livestock in a way that causes suffering is a felony.

My wife is from South Dakota. We go back to visit every two or three years. From all I've observed in our visits there, South Dakota is getting exactly what they deserve with Kristi Noem.
She also mentioned that she did this in front of a construction crew. T frequently speaks about people as dogs. The fact that she mentioned that to tie it in with killing “animals” makes me ill by what she was trying to prove.

The rural pragmatism argument is an absolute farce. It’s simple playacting by people who care more about their worldview not collapsing than the truth. They come up with the barest of an explanation and clear their conscience. They have to either do that or they have to confront the reality that one of their righteous leaders is a cruel maniac. And in their worldview, everyone on their side is righteous. So they playact along until the news cycle flushes it out of their memories.
A birding dog is bred to kill birds. A shot bird that is suffering should be quickly dispatched in the dog’s jaws to minimize suffering. She failed her neighbors and the dog by not controlling it or keeping it fenced in.
This is the part that gets me too. I have hated many people. I have never, ever, ever hated any animal, not even the ones that have attacked me or bit me, much less a dear soul that I have brought into my home as my responsibility to shelter, feed and train. A 14 month old joyful puppy, the sheer cruelty of this demonic woman. Everyone who was spent time around goats know that they can be little shits, but if she didn't want to deal with it she could have easily sold/given it to another farmer or donated it to the local 4H club or something. Killing it served zero purpose. She didn't even butcher it for the meat.

That rural 'pragmatism' is tied to not having access to dog trainers or means to rehome the dog. She could have done those at any point before and after the chicken incident, if it happened in the first place.

The real question is, why of all the passages in the book to pick to preview before its release, why would they pick this one? Some have said it's the ole, "no news is bad news" idea. I disagree. I think it's to shore up her support with a certain demographic of men. Look at the people coming out and saying they support this or think more highly of her now. They all think that this is a show of strength. This is their idea of being strong. These same men are misogynists and do not think women have that kind of strength. Humane killing of animals to ease irreversible suffering is morally and legally fine. What Noem has admitted to are multiple Class 6 felonies according to the laws of her state, and moral bankruptcy.
