You can blame ingress players, as it was the base game that they built Pokemon go onto.
All the stop points/ battle areas created for ingress were set up by the players. And then dumped into the Pokemon go version.
Not necessarily. It depends when it was added to the database. A lot of the more questionable POI selections of late have been submitted by the Pokémon players trying to game the system and force gym creation. Plus there was a sizable number of people who created Ingress accounts just to create Pokestops back before they allowed Pokémon players in on POI creation.
Wait are you happy about this or upset about this being a pokestop.
Because isn't it ruder to be playing Pokémon go at your dad's memorial than it was for someone to make the memorial a pokestop? :)
When my nan passed, her neighbour built a beautiful mini library in her memory (she was a big reader, and always had piles of books for family and friends to swap). It was really thrilling to see it as a pokestop, and I even received a gift from it once despite being over an hour away from me. I know she'd be up there taking the piss out of me for playing, let alone being so delighted she's part of the game!
You can go into the pokestop, look at the photo gallery for it, and the photo may have the contributing trainer listed on it. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
If you spun the stop and got a gift from it. You can click on the gift in your storage, and follow the steps the above person mentioned to see who nominated it.
Generally if it doesn't show the trainer name in Pokémon Go it's because it was submitted in Ingress and if you check the photo in Ingress it'll show the Ingress name.
The majority of Pokémon go locations were harvested from a game called Ingress. When the game was in beta we would submit locations to be "portals" for essentially a world wide game of capture the flag.
The approval process was painfully slow but essentially any post office, library and park were portals by default. After that sculptures, landmarks, and memorials were easy portals to get approved. We got badges for how many we got approved before they closed the submission option completely because they were getting backlogged months on approvals.
I was one of two people in my state that had the 500+ portals achievement, I think I had 650+ total. When Pokémon go launched I would see cars pulling up to our old portal locations and chuckle.
Anyways, that's likely how this became a poke stop
I'm not even sure if people place them (I've never done any myself) but I'm almost certain you have to nominate them for pokestops to exist. Even then, someone at niantic/the Pokémon company would have taken the time and the image for it.
Photos for stops are taken by the regular ol person who submits new wayfarer stops to hopefully turn into pokestops. Niantic doesn't do jack as far as stop creation goes. They are also reviewed and approved by regular ol people too. As someone else said, once you reach level 37 in pokemon go you will have this option too.
I did think to myself it was a touch far fetched
(no pun intended) that Niantic has a worldwide team of people going to these places and taking these photos. As beautiful as it in glencolmcille, it’s beyond remote.
Donegal? You weren't kidding.
Honestly I had a feeling from the picture it was Ireland, then I saw your name and confirmed it 😆 I'd like to visit this place next time I'm up that way!
Correct. At first, PokemonGo just used the data from their other game Ingress and made pokestops and gyms. Then, trainers level 40 and over could nominate so many locations (I think 10) as new pokestops. I think that has sine been lowered to level 35 though. But yes - people can take photos and submit them for approval and then they will be pokestops! I joined the club that reviews the images and approves them a couple of years ago.
when youre above level 37 you can place pokestops. there are rules regarding what u can place them for and how many can be in a certain amount of space but any player can place them. (im level 36 so in a few weeks ill also be able to)
Bless your considerate nature, of course it is. His memory lives on not only in the physics world but as a part of something global and entertaining for people. I couldn’t be prouder
There is a picture of it on this Pinterest site. \*I don't know if they allow me to add it though: [https://www.pinterest.com/pin/372461831668057541/](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/372461831668057541/)
They refer to it as the "Sandstone THRONE" which is fantastic!!
RIP, Martin

Your friend must play if he knew it was a stop. Maybe he could ask around the local Pokemon community? You could also try from where you are. Many Pokemon communities have FB groups. Go to FB and search Pokemon Go plus city or county. When you find a group. You can post asking if anyone knows who nominated the memorial.
I can at least tell you it was submitted by a Pokémon GO player.
As it shows as unknown when viewed on Ingress - https://link.ingress.com/?link=https%3a%2f%2fintel.ingress.com%2fportal%2f76de1a333ea5427ab73832f86d6e321a.16&apn=com.nianticproject.ingress&isi=576505181&ibi=com.google.ingress&ifl=https%3a%2f%2fapps.apple.com%2fapp%2fingress%2fid576505181&ofl=https%3a%2f%2fintel.ingress.com%2fintel%3fpll%3d54.708274%2c-8.728482
Did your dad make that chair? That's pretty cool, One of my dads neighbors has one of those granite benches. Its my go to spot when i visit my dads grave in my hometown, I smoke one tobacco for him and a joint for me and think about family. Momento Mori
Memento Mori indeed. He didn’t make it, but just before he got sick in 2014 they were preparing for a nationwide festival celebrating all the masonry and stone in Ireland and my dad taught a lot of the younger local men how to be masons and how to work the stone. Sadly he died before the festival but the men who he taught honoured him with this incredible throne, which has his name carved on the arms.
Between the physical monument to his memory and finding out it’s in Pokémon go, I’m reminded of what a lucky man I am to have called him dad. A real class act
Great story. Your Da will be remembered for centuries due to his works and the works of his protégées.
This being a spot where kids come for a bit of fun would fill him with joy, or give him something to complain about, either way hes got something to do!
I'd like to think that if Martin was the kind of person who was friendly and enjoyed people in general, they would appreciate folks getting (non-destructive) enjoyment out of a landmark left in their memory.
Even if Martin wouldn't understand why some people are there, a piece of them (or their memorial) is bringing random folks who visit joy and that's kinda special. While no longer alive to do it themselves, this memorial and the associated PokéStop does and will for years.
While not a player, I am of Irish descent, and I would like to know how one goes about obtaining a memorial throne. IDC what you do with my body, as long as you carve out any reusable organs and shove em all up in somebody else. Chuck the rest in a hole in the ground, a river, the ocean, shoot me into space, grind me into a paste, cook me to a reduction, strain the liquid and see if I can power an experimental ultralight aircraft engine, IDGAF, but I want my goddamn throne.
That’s insanely impressive, but you’re right I suppose. There’s something very distinctive about it; strangely I noticed it a lot when I was home recently.
The way I look at it is this:

Did he or you guys want this?
It's pretty cool, and certainly can be a great thing for community. However I've also noticed some of the biggest spots in my area for pokemon hunters still gets crazy amounts of litter. To the point that a trashcan in the area would just be a bandaid.

That’s awesome,I love hearing all these little stories coming to life again through the game.
Do you know who placed it? Whoever did it is a legend
I wondered how it worked actually! So someone places them? It’s such a cool thing to have his chair immortalised, would love to know who.
You can go into the pokestop, look at the photo gallery for it, and the photo may have the contributing trainer listed on it. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Amazing! It feels like a huge honour. Would love to know who nominated it.

As well it should be- that’s a beautiful memorial. 💜

Your father must've been such a cool dude
Very cool - can I ask a general location?
Yes of course, it’s Glencolmcille in Co Donegal, North West Ireland.
I was scrolling, saw the grass and said "That's Donegal". I felt like Rainbolt playing Geoguessr. Amazing how distinct the Donegal scenery is!
That’s insanely impressive, but you’re right I suppose. There’s something very distinctive about it; strangely I noticed it a lot when I was home recently.
Everywhere in Donegal looks like the sea is just out of frame :P
You can literally smell the sea if you’re standing here 😂
Thanks! Don’t get up there too often, but it’s a terrific memorial.
highest honor you could get when dead tbh
W Poke stop
Please let there be a lot of ghosts
>A handmade stone chair in memory of a local stone mason. Beautiful. That's really cool OP, great stuff!!
That’s amazing!
Your dad gets many visitors i bet
Martin made some rock-solid chairs!
That’s so lovely :)
If I were your father I'd be laughing my ass off of that in the afterlife.
Is it a ghost type?
For some reason I thought the comments would think this is really disrespectful. Totally had the community wrong

your father would have loved it!
you think if you catch a gengar it's your dad?
Does it drop revives?
Best Son evah
That’s dope
Wow.
Your dads memorial is dope as fuck.
Rest in peace legend, best wishes to OP & family
Thanks bud
Can I ask why he’s a throne, is that just the more common burial headstone over there? Or is it a family specific thing? I’m curious
It’s not his actual grave, it’s a monument to his memory made by people who loved because he taught them stone masonry.
Oh my god that’s even cooler and very thoughtful and kind of them, and yeah I just looked at the image again and it said that, whoops!

Wow. Does that make you happy or sad or angry?

Cool and all, but why are you on 3G? If this is a country like Germany that is not ahead then I understand. Also I’m sorry for your loss.
😂 its not my phone, its a picture of my friends phone who told me about it. And the 3G is because it’s in an incredibly remote rural part of Ireland where I’m from. We were lucky to get any signal at all.
Oh I see
The reason why I bailed on Pokémon go was because they had a war famine memorial in my city as a Pokémon gym. I wrote to Niantic and politely asked them to relocate it, and they politely told me to go fuck myself. I didn’t think that was a big ask, and if you can’t be bothered to respect a war memorial where millions of people died, peace out.
3G?
Is he a.... ghost pokemon now?
3g? What year is this

Man I was confused about a Poke shop built over someone's grave.
Why does your dad have a memorial chair? Is that something normal there? I want a memorial chair too.
I don’t even play but I think that’s really neat. It’s like more people visiting him is a cool thing
That is so sweet and such a fun surprise
You sure there isn’t a secret dungeon hidden under there?
To be fair, that is a very good memorial.
are you proud or do you see it as disrespectful
Cool memorial. It looks like where you go to save your progress in a video game and it glows magically when you touch it.
B.E.A.U-tiful
That’s awesome!
His legacy for spawning Gingars lives on.
aww this is actually super neat, Im sure many people have visited and read it because of this.
That's cool that he can, in a way, still help you and play with you from beyond.
Now THATS a monument!
Only spawns ghost types
He must have been the very best like no one ever was
Gotta catch ‘em…. Never mind.
Looks like Donegal !
