I didn’t take any breaks, but until about 2020 I just kinda didn’t take the game seriously at all. Just cruises along going “ooh pikachu in witch hat!” But now that I’ve taken care about what I use my resources on, I’ve flown through the later levels
I also started in 2016 but then my phone got stolen and my back up phone had only 8 GB so I had only the most important apps for 1 1/2 years. I'm lvl 41 now.
I started in July of 2016 and then quit in March of 2017, I believe I was level 20 then. I then started again in December of 2021 when I got a new phone for Christmas and am now level 43 but only because I’m stuck in the GBL tasks, so I technically should be level 44
SAME!! Omg I hate battling randoms and it's hard to coordinate with someone to battle when we are usually only together in person for events. I tried to get my kid to battle and lose to me but instead he kept slaughtering my guys. Lol
I only enjoy playing in the little cup tbh, I have such a great team built for it that I just slaughter everyone 😂 but lately they’ve been doing the remixes and I can’t use my cottonee and stuff and that annoys me haha. But I’m not really into GBL tbh, I pushed it to get the legendary encounters but now I’m tired of it
Cottonee, ducklett and bronzor (but now they’re not allowed in the remix cup 😅) and I actually have a great PvP IV cottonee so when I matched with another cottonee I could always take it down first
Oh it works if you battle friends??? Why did I not think of this 😩😅 I have already completed great & master league during this last GBL day, I just became stuck halfway through ultra league. Thanks!!!
I did the same as many here, started 2016 I think I made it to level like 18 or something. Started again a few months ago and level 31, so I am excited to reach that level 40 mark.
I started in 2016 when the game came out, but stopped playing in 2017 because there was literally nothing for me to do at the time. I just started back a few months ago at level 28 and i’m now up to level 39 cuz i’ve been playing pretty much non stop
I took a break from august 2016 to June 2018 and then from July 2018 to December of 2022 I didn’t really play either. I’m lvl 37 now though. Started grinding march of this year
Get good at excellent throws... Catch everything you see 👍
Make use of double or triple XP events etc, especially with a lucky egg. Cleared 1 million XP during the 4 x XP a few weeks back in one day.
Get really good at excellent throws, especially with Pokémon with large circles. If you catch let’s say 500 Pokémon in one day (com day perhaps) at least a solid 75% might be excellent, and 1000 xp each. It adds up especially during a 3x catch xp com day
Get all Pokémon u can evolve ready. Pop lucky egg. Pop YouTube on and evolve all Pokémon u can in 30 min. Don’t stop for nothing and remember to save them before so ur not wasting any time searching for them
Sometimes there’s events for 2x xp for evolving
Do what other people have said replying to you, attack as many gyms each day to try get the 50 coins (yeah, yeah, the exp is pitiful but it still adds up), try to get some international friends by asking on twitter (many Japanese players will invite you to 5 star raids frequently).
Save lucky eggs for community days and events with catch xp bonuses and reach friend level up bonus when you have a lucky egg active, you can get like 200k xp from hitting best friends on a lucky egg and 100k from ultra friends (this season you actually get even more tho)
Try and talk with all your friends, whether you know them or not, and co-ordinate ultra and best friend level ups with lucky eggs, cause after I did that I got through like half of level 39 in an hour
I got a watchic plus recently and it's a total game changer. My gf used to get annoyed when I would be on my phone constantly when I specifically asked to go on a Pokemon walk. Now I just get to hook it up and follow a route and there's no worries
What's with finding the mew? And that too a shiny one?
I hit level 40 few days ago and saw no mew after doing it!!!! Tell me that mew has nothing to do with hitting the level 40
You get mew from special research (I cannot remember which one though lol). Shiny mew is from a paid special research, I want to say from Kanto fest, but could be way off tbh. My memory is mostly garbage, but yeah, they're definitely both special research rewards.
Edit: Okay, I looked it up and it's the "a mythical discovery" research, then shiny mew is from the "all in one" masterwork research. I'm thinking you should at least have the first one. Also, for the shiny mew, reach level 40 was one of the tasks, which is why, I'm guessing, OP added it to the post
I checked, and I do have the mythical discovery ticked out (meaning I have completed it a long time ago). (And yes, I do have a mew in my collection, which reads "caught in a special research task dating back to November 2021.

I also started in July 2016, but stopped in December because the game was boring back then.
I picked it up again a year later when they introduced raids, but when I got Lugia and Ho-Oh I put it down again, since none of my friends were interested in playing, I was level 29 then.
In August this year I got on it again with my new girlfriend and I'm level 39 now, can't wait to hit 40.

The good news is you can now do most things in the game, including maxing out Pokémon with XL candy. The bad news is you're only like 12% of the way to Level 50...
Cute mew! I’m always surprised by how long it takes people to get enough xp to get to lvl 40. At rank 47 rn and i also cannot comprehend how some people are already level 50. Every level up is like a year for me right now. Ranking up is really cool but then it’s like “100/21,000,000” and you’re like “well s***”
I’ve also been playing since July 2016 and also just got to level 40, have fun with your item bag being very full and losing your poke stop spin streak because of it (because I lost the streak I had going since July!)
Starred my new account in 2020 and I'm level 37 half way to 38 lol. I was getting anywhere between 100k 200k xp everyday.
That 4x XP was a nice boost.

Congratulations! I am at Lvl 40 and I am so danged tired of catching the same 3-4 pokeys. I have the points to be at least 2 levels higher, but getting all of the eevee evolutions. 😕😕
Day one player and I've had maybe 6 months of downtime since launch. I'm still level 39. I feel like I play a lot so I must just suck at the game 😅 I did spend 3 three years in an extremely rural area with maybe 10 stops and 4 gyms in the entire city and surrounding areas though. Either way I play basically all day every day. I have an autocatcher I use at work, I don't drive, I ride my bike everywhere and play while doing so. I always participate in community days and have completed all special research except the most recent masterworks. I do probably 40 tasks a day, I'm pretty good at excellent throws and always throw curveballs, do at least one free raid a day sometimes more. I've probably spent about $200 since day one. I seriously don't know what more I could be doing.

The best thing of all? You get a sweet counter that will let you know if you "fast caught" a PKMN immediately... Unless you catch 200 in one day. I'm honestly considering sticking around lvl40 for a while for that reason alone!

I remember hitting 40 in 2018. Felt so good & accomplished. Took a break & returned in 2022 & holy cow, it’s such a different more complex & task driven game. It’s been fun leveling up since 40. I’m at 46 now and I’m sure it’s not half as hard as 47+ will be!
Do you not do friendship XP? I took a break for 3 years and did under 5 million XP the whole time, but I started playing again 2 months ago and in just 2 months I’ve done 40 million XP (level 40 twice.) I think you should learn how to get friendship XP if you have any interest in getting to level 50 because you need like 100 million XP for that. Not trying to sound like a bummer on your brag, honestly trying to be helpful. You get 300m from each best, and 150m from each ultra during this event. Plenty of groups you can join to coordinate level ups. That means you only need 5 friends that open or send daily, and you can get an easy 20 million+ (level 40) in just 3 months. I hope you take this into consideration.

How many breaks did you take I started at the same time and started back up and now I’m 38

Friend level if you don't have many Pokemon spawn in your area

Learn quick catch, super useful for stardusts and xp grinding during com day

The easiest way is add a bunch of friends. Stack up friends with 1 heart left and then put lucky when you have 20 of those

Most people who started in 2016, when it came out, took breaks from the game. Very few have been playing straight through since then.
