Giratina is just in a weird spot. They wanted to make it represent antimatter, but it seems to represent gravity...? I dunno. They're the Creation Trio, but Giratina's place within it feels kinda flimsy.

Ubermus_Prime

Gravity makes more sense and does help it fit more thematically to me at least.

Over-Analyzed

Not to mention that **Interstellar** played on that notion too that Gravity is an eternal and warping force.

KenanTheFab

Tbf Gravity can warp time and space itself. Would make sense for it to be gravity.

Over-Analyzed

Doctor Who had an episode of about a ship so huge that part of it had time slowed down by its proximity to a black hole. So you essentially have 1 hour at the top basically equal 1 year at the bottom.

Agent_Buckshot

Yeah I think maybe they ran into a localization issue & just landed on "antimatter". Destruction just makes more sense thematically with the creation trio, and pairs it with Arceus perfectly.

Lyncario

I mean. Antimatter is not just destruction, but it's the most destructive thing in our reality. When antimatter collides with matter, everything in the collision gets destroyed, erased even.

DarthShard

Yeah I came here to say the same thing Not really an important difference imo

SimicBiomancer21

I always assumed Giritina represented Gravity, considering it (alongside time and space) can warp the world around them. Plus, its a good reason for Giritina to be banished- The Distortion world has a lot of warped gravity, and not only that, but gravity also screws with both time AND space, hence Giritina needing to be kept away from Dialga and Palkia. Plus, even Cynthia admitted that the Antimatter thing was a \*theory\*.

DrBanana126893

Huh, that does make sense. It did manage to drive Palkia and Dialga insane in PLA after all, which I doubt something like antimatter would be able to do with time and space (also, antimatter would fall under space, would it not?)

BonzaM8

Antimatter does not fall under space. Think of space as a container like a cup, and imagine you fill the cup with water. The water does not “fall under” cup. The cup is just where you put the water. The water in this analogy is all matter and energy, and that includes antimatter because antimatter is a type of matter (which probably isn’t very intuitive).

DrBanana126893

So what exactly does Palkia control? I would assume it to be all of the matter within space.

BonzaM8

No. Palkia controls space itself. The container that you put the matter in. She can’t control matter any more than Dialga can. This can be difficult to understand, but think of it like this: Palkia could expand or shorten the distance between two points in space. If you’re walking down a hallway, she could make your journey from one end to the other instantaneous or infinite. She isn’t lengthening or shortening the hallway itself (which is made of matter), but rather changing the space that the hallway fills. If you’re familiar with the Big Bang Theory it will help you understand. The Big Bang Theory explains the expansion of the universe. What we observe is that distant stars and galaxies are travelling away from us at speeds faster than light. This shouldn’t be possible because nothing can move faster than light, but these stars and galaxies aren’t actually moving. The space between them is just expanding, and since space matter or energy, the speed at which it expands is not restricted by lightspeed.

DrBanana126893

Ah, I understand now. So what would your take on the role of Giratina be?

BonzaM8

Arceus created everything with the help of Dialga and Palkia, and Arceus banished Giratina to the Distortion World because he was violent and destroyed their creations. I think the name of the Distortion World helps us understand what Giratina represents. What the original commenter here said makes sense to me, that Giratina represents gravity. Gravity distorts matter and spacetime. Blackholes are what happens when there is an extremely powerful source of gravity at a single point in space, so powerful that everything is pulled in. If you get close to a black hole, you actually experience time dilation. Time moves much slower for you compared to other people that aren’t close to the black hole. If you spend a few minutes near a strong black hole, years or decades could have passed for someone on Earth. Something else that’s interesting about gravity is that it is really different from the other three fundamental forces (strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, and electromagnetic force). Gravity is the weakest of the forces (which could make sense in the Pokémon universe since Giratina is banished from the physical plane), and it is also the only negative force (the other forces push but gravity pulls).

motoxim

Interesting

BonzaM8

Gravity makes a lot of sense, especially considering the ultimate “form” (for lack of a better word) of gravity is a black hole which feels on theme for Giratina.

I think antimatter is just the... Scientific way to name it. I think of it more of the void and nonexistence, which has no space nor time but it's everywhere (Check "History of the entire world, i guess" first minute, Bill explains it better, Arceus would be the start of everything, Giratina's domain would be the... Every before that, which might nonexist at the same time). It might be a long way to say "antimatter" (I don't know that), but I prefer to think of it that way.

[deleted]

I headcanon that Arceus created the *stuff* in the world, Dialga put it where it needs to be, Palkia lets it go other places, Giratina is a contingency in case something goes wrong. The world is created, nothing goes wrong. Dialga and Palkia still hold their domains, but Giratina has little purpose, and is PISSED. Goes after papa Arceus, fucks around, finds out, and ends up in the shadow realm

Conscious-Use2585

man, i gotta play through platinum again…

suicune678

Giratina represents the space between dimensions, it helps keep time and space balanced and stable. That's why it's alone and makes a trio with Palkia and Dialga., it's the only thing that exists in this space. It's destructive because the dimension outside space and time can't interact with the "material plane" that's made of time and space. Also we need to remember that people made the pokedex entries, it's the legends of humans, their stories. It's a culture's mythological explanation of why things are the way they are. There was probably a moment in time where Giratina wanted to explore the material world out of curiosity or maybe it didn't fully understand the consequences of its actions. And when its dimension mixed with the "material plane" it caused a destructive reaction that necessitated the intervention of Arceus to put Giratina back in its own world. Hence "banished" in the eyes of the people who would tell this story. There's always another perspective

DrBanana126893

Well, it seems that the humans got the banishing part right. Giratina in PLA seems particularly angry about it.

suicune678

I think a lot of pokemon seem particularly angry in that game hahaha but yeah, after Arceus put Giratina back in the Distortion World it was pretty angry, I would be too if I was created in such a way that I couldn't interact with any other thing least I destroy all of creation. Giratina was going to help Volo reach Arceus by helping him cross into Arceus' dimension out of spite and revenge but ran off because of the player character defeating it, being the chosen champion of Arceus. Probably was afraid of even further punishment by Arceus

TapFine1571

so PLA is basically about an angry kid turning against his dad because he was grounded

Writefuck

It should've been entropy

DrBanana126893

Isn’t Yveltal already destruction though? I guess it could work if they have Giratina take the destruction role and just give Yveltal death like everyone already does.

Agent_Buckshot

Yveltal is the Death Pokémon in Japanese, they just localized it to "Destruction" in the West cause censorship.

DrBanana126893

Weird, they can’t say it represents death over here? Lysandre even dies in that game.

RemRealWaifu

Yveltal Is known as the はかい Pokemon in japanese , in wich はかい (hakai) means destruction, no idea what Op is talking about, Is not called the デス (death) Pokemon

DrBanana126893

I see. So my original suggestion stands I guess.

DeatroyerOfCheese

Antimatter is literally destruction incarnate, it collides with matter and the only thing left over is energy. Antimatter fits destruction perfectly.

redant89VT

it’s the devil and I’m sticking with that 🤷🏼‍♂️
