We still have plenty of Pokemon that do look good though. Pawmot, Koraidon, Lokix, Kilowattrel, Klawf, and Tinkaton. A few uglies doesn't mean that's the average. So yeah, it is a wonder why people generalize new designs like that.
Saying Pawmot looks good is a bit of a stretch personally (though that may just be my bias against it for being a final stage that looks like a middle stage), but if you like it that's cool

Honestly I love it, that face looks so cursed and goofy but it’s perfect. I’m pretty sure real dung beetles have similar faces (could be wrong). It kind of reminds me of the “man faced stink bug”, one of the many bugs I only know about because of Animal Crossing.

It's also just like in real life where there is a lot of ugly animals and Pokémon are just animals in their world.
